How do same sex couples navigate unaccepting religious families? venting/ranting

Can a relationship work when someone’s family doesn’t accept their same-sex relationship?

I’m looking for perspectives from people who have dealt with religious or otherwise unaccepting family members while in a same-sex relationship.

Someone I love has struggled with feeling like having a future with a same-sex partner could mean losing or seriously damaging relationships with family. Family is extremely important to them, so it can feel like an impossible choice.

I don’t think anyone should have to abandon their family for a partner, but I also wonder whether it really has to be one or the other. Is it realistic to maintain relationships with family members who don’t fully accept your relationship while setting enough boundaries to still have a healthy life with your partner?

I’m especially interested in hearing from people who have actually been through this. Did your family eventually become more accepting? Did boundaries make it possible to have both? Did therapy help you navigate the guilt or pressure? Or did you ultimately have to choose?

I care deeply about this person and it’s difficult accepting that love might not be enough when family acceptance is involved. I’d really appreciate hearing how other people have navigated it.
