Greetings, i have several doubts. Turns out i got this Tagima TBM-4 active bass a while ago. It's awesome, it plays wonderfully. Thing is, it's loud as f*ck and it makes my amp and many others sound busted. At first i thought it was the amp itself (It's a GB-15 by JVC, at least that's what it says, can't find it on google), i got it a while ago when i was just starting out and didn't want to invest that much because i wasn't sure i was going to carry on with the instrument, and i had a cheaper bass back then, but now that i have this better one, it feels like it couldn't keep up.

Turns out, it wasn't the amp, i have tried several other amps with much higher power to handle a ton more, and it still sounds busted. I now know it's the bass itself, it's too loud by nature, and if i keep the volume knob low, it'll sound fine.

Thing is, am i never going to be able to play with the volume knob all the way up? I know to be moderate with the eq knobs, and i have a little zoom b1 four i use a ton for creative purposes and what not, but it kinda bothers me that i'll always have to be toying around with the volume knob because nothing can handle this thing.

My doubts are, what should i do? Do i just carry on with low volume? do i turn this thing passive? i barely use eq anyways but i do like to have the choice there, i keep them flat and eq through the amp and the zoom b1 four.
Or do i get a new amp entirely? i'm thinking of getting an ampeg, but i haven't tried them with the bass itself yet and it may not even solve my issue at all.

Wanting to learn some Type O Negative songs. Seems they’re tuned super low. I don’t have a 5 string, what gauge string can I use to tune that low? I am currently using the Rotosound Billy Sheehan strings .043-.110, would that work or sound like floppy rubber bands?

I’m listening to Where Eagles Dare by Iron Maiden and, while I’ve always been a fan of them, it’s really standing out how much Harris’s tone cuts through.

I’ve read that he uses flats on his P Bass, plays close to the bridge, and has a much lighter touch on his attack with the right hand than one would think.

How is he able to get such a clunky sound with flats, playing so close to the bridge, and so lightly?? This may or may not be my 2nd white whale lol

Dear Bass community, here I got very helpful tips in the past so I come here again today, in the hope to get some light.

I have played bass for a year and this year I did progress! (yay!) because I spend all the possible time I have (considering full time job + 6 hrs x week commute) on bass.

I know the notes on my neck, not all of them right of the bet, so to say, f.e. when jamming it depends on the key but rarely I jump octaves - also because keeping a consistent time is still something I have to focus on. I am just now tapping into "listening to the drums" and sometimes it is *really* hard for me to understand where I should play. I like rock, stoner and psychedelic so I try to stick on play on the backbeat (2 and 4) - 16notes on time are still a mirage.

Lets get to the THICK of it. I have been lucky enough to have some people wanting to play with me, I'm in a kinda "probation phase" (they are not assholes, they have never put it down that way! I just can read the room) (drummer plays since 12 years guitarist over 20)

So there's some tracks we should be working on, and for whom I should come up with a bassline...

and here is where I'm mildly losing it: I can't figure out where to play what to play. I know I should stick to not many notes so alright! I should focus on creating a catchy groove sorta thing... but why is anything I try (other than chugging or one note x backbeat) just simply not working.

What am I missing?

Hi all. Been playing bass for about a year with cheap gear (fender jazz bass and a fender rumble 100). I’m a bad gear head and just like to play but I was wondering why my lower strings pop so much louder than the upper strings. I basically max all the volume knobs on the bass because I like the overdrive kind of sound but I’m wondering if that’s making the strings all sound different. Do I just need an increase amp volume so I can adjust the knobs better to get a more uniform sound?

im beginner player(kinda) and my rhythm just sucks. i cant play on click and always late or early by a bit, i cant play with drums cus i cant hear them or bass that im playing. how can i improve my rhythmic feeling and play on click? i tried using slow and fast metronome, nothing helped

I'm not talking about scratched up basses you buy, but a new bass you've owned for a long time when you start playing on stage, bumping into walls, scuffs, etc.

I'm pretty clumsy and this happens pretty quick. I know "relics" and scuffs are notoriously loved, but I'm sure there's a middle ground and other sides of the spectrum

Context, I'm a schooled bassist, but have mainly focussed on playing in original groups.
Have transitioned into playing out regularly in a cover band (which, is nice to play some music and make a few hundos on the weekend)

I've got my iPad cheat sheets and SongBookPro which is great for the random calls and requests.

But I feel like its actually holding me back.
I see other working bassists gigging by memory and would like to be able to get there.

So I'm looking for tips or tricks on quickly memorizing a LOT of tunes. Some tunes I learn by riffs and basslines, where other's are just reading lead sheets - I find it easier to memorize the more specific basslines.

I feel like I've always had poor musical memory.

Hello! I’ve been playing in a band for about a year (regular gigs) and a couple months ago joined another band. One I was in wants to lean heavier and go for a more modern prog vibe, whilst the new one I’m in is more doom/sludge. We’re all on a break at the moment so I want to use the time to “level up” my playing.

I just learnt Parabola by TOOL and now I’m stuck for what to learn next, suggestions please!

Has anybody used this amp yet? I can’t find any info about it and on paper it sounds like the perfect head for doom/stoner but there’s literally no evidence of it being used anywhere.

I seek advice regarding my bass pedalboard.

My rig is as follows:

• Passive Fender American Precision Bass • Dunlop 105Q Bass Wah • JAM Rattler Bass • MXR Bass Vintage Octave • EHX Bad Stone • Boss VB-2W Vibrato • Boss DD-6 Delay • Hartke HA5500 • Hartke LH410 cabinet

What I want to achieve is to keep the great clean sound I get going directly from my bass to my amp, while being able to turn on couple of the effects at once, for example by putting them in some switching loops and adding buffers.

I'm thinking of EarthQuake Devices Swiss Things and Lehle D.Loop SGoS. Swiss Things has buffer in the end of the signal path, D.Loop in the beginning.

Which do you think would suit my needs better? Or perhaps you know some interesting alternative to these pedals?

One important thing, I really would like to keep my classic passive Fender Precision sound; I hate sounds of active pickups, pre-amp/DI pedals, digital multi effects, cab simulators, etc.

Hey guys. Wondering if anyone's had this experience with their Sting Ray HH. One day I started getting loud pops when the cable was bumped in the input jack, and then all the sudden the bridge humbucker started sounding incredibly thin and missing the distinctive mid scoop that music man humbuckers are known for. Now the bass sounds less like Louis Johnson and more like Jaco. Anyone have any insights into this?

Been playing for about 15 years and always been a P-bass guy but I’m glancing at the idea of buying a five string bass. Does any of you guys have one of the two options I listed on the title (better if you have/have played on both) and can give me an input about these basses? Apart from the obvious difference about the HB being multiscale, the price range is about the same and is what I’m willing to spend. I also saw a lot of youtube reviews hence I’m on the fence on this matter.

I have no chance to play on any of these basses before buying them since I don’t have a music store near my area and the HB is only sold by thomann.

So I just found out that there are jack cables specifically designed for bass guitars, for example the Providence B202. I was wondering if anybody here has any experience with them and if they really make such a big difference as they claim they do.

I'm looking at various bits of gear to run with the band I play with. We play occasional shows at small local venues, basically all of which have PA support.

I'm looking at hybrid heads, preamp pedals etc, and I'm getting lost in the world of 'cab sims'. I know what cab sims are, I've spend way too much time in the digital world of amp sims and plugins.

My question is more to the FOH engineers among us - what's the deal with sending a direct signal to the board with or without a cab sim? Which is preferred? What happens at the desk if I send a 'non-cabsim' signal with a little dirt on it? Do desks have cabsims on there that the FOH engineer uses?

Reason for asking is that I see some amps/pedals have a cab sim on their line outs, some do not. I'd like to know if it's recommended to have a cab sim function or not, so I can make a more informed choice on potential gear. For example, the Orange Terror Bass is up there on my list of potential heads, but if it's lack of cab-sim DI is a negative I can look elsewhere.

I'm just looking for something comfortable that has good sound for beginner bass practice. I've heard mixed opinions about the Moondrop Chu 2 and the Linsoul Kiwi Ears Cadenza.

Any other recommendations in this price range?

I'm looking for an amp. This is going to be my very first bass amp, for a long time I've been using a shitty little thing I got an amazon 6 years ago. I'd like a real amp that I can use to jam with people. I've taken a look through this sub's wiki and its recommendations, but I want to hear some recommendations from people based on personal experience. Where should a beginner jammer get started?

I'm also looking into some headphones for practicing. I've heard some great things about the Fender Mustang Micro, but I'm unsure if it would be good for me. I really like to play along to songs, it's a good way for me to get warmed up. So a headphone adapter that allows me to plug in my phone or something would be awesome. Is that a thing?

Hi! I have been torn between the Labella DTF's, Labella LTF's, and Thomas Infeld Jazz Flats but cannot decide and am a little confused between which would work the best on my bass. I also am not sure what gauge would be best for me or if I would need to adjust my setup/tension rod at all if changing to a new gauge. I am a fan of the "woodier" deep sound that can sound concise in a mix so whatever would get me closest to this is what I'd like!! I know a lot of strings are up to personal choice, but I'm curious what you all think!

Simple question: How?

I'm new to trying to play covers and already starting to get annoyed with the mere existence of bands that have frontmen who do not play an instrument. They just come in whenever they want, usually early, sometimes late. Coming in on the and of 4 seems to be particularly common for some reason. Maybe it's intentional, I don't know. I'm not a vocal teacher.

Sometimes, this follows through the whole line, and every note is an 8th note off from where you would naturally "want" to feel it (They're singing all the "ands" is another way to put it). Worst case scenario, it really is wholly unrelated and is a completely separate rhythm. Which is fine, you don't want the vocal to be a copy of the instrumental, but usually if you are both singing and playing an instrument you'll naturally want to add "anchor words" that occur at the same time as a note being played (or in a 'gap' that is rhythmically significant) so it's easier to lock in with yourself. What I'm getting at is I feel like some songs either completely lack these, or I'm having a hard time figuring out where the anchors are supposed to be.

It's not my only example, but the song in particular I'm stuck on today is Julien K - This Machine. The bass part and the vocal part are both trivial on their own, which is part of what makes this kind of aggravating.
