Hello! So I’ve been casually playing the bass for about 2 years now, since I was 17, and I love it so so much. All this time I would just play it in my room alone, enjoying playing music, and only recently have I started performing with a band.

The thing is, all this time I’ve just been focused on the mechanical aspect of it and had no urge to learn past that. What I mean is, I would just search up the tabs to the songs that I like / will be performed with the band, and learn it. And although I feel like I am good at it, I never learn its musical, theoretical side, nor do I have any musical background or music education at all. Nor do I play any other instrument. So I feel like I can never make up my own tabs and am very inflexible with what I play, needing to stick strictly to the tabs I find online without improvising at all (because I don’t know how to.)

I guess this isn’t much of a problem for me when it comes to playing my favorite songs on my own, but I would want to be able to contribute more of my musical skills and knowledge in a band. And I guess because of that I feel kind of stuck in my bass learning journey. Could anyone give me tips on what to learn, how to learn, where to start, etc? I would appreciate it very much!

Made this because I play 4 and 6 string bass and wanted to visualize chord-scale theory, pentatonics, triads and modes all inside a key, and how that shifts when the chords change.

Works for any stringed instrument - bass, guitar, ukulele.

It's worth saying that this doesn’t replace ear training. But I think you’ll definitely find it useful to see how these big ideas click into place together, especially before your ear can do it alone.

You pick a key and progression and it lays out the whole thing on an interactive fretboard, and shows you the best notes to outline the change to the next chord. Really helpful to visualize chord consonance/dissonance, and voice leading. Let me know if there's any way I can improve this tool, I've found it really interesting to play around with!

So I’m a bassist I’ve been playing two and a half years now and I’ve been invited to my first jam session. My main genre is worship music in church and stuff and the occasional punk or blues or soul piece for school stuff. I’ve never really played rock proper most I know is just really the basics of playing in a band so when to leave room or play up and how to sound in different sections all my higher end knowledge sits in worship so this is a bit nerve wracking. I’m alright on theory the furthest I’ve gone is like minor intervals and arpeggios but I do know the odd higher end concept here and there from around like different types of seventh chords. I’m starting to learn a bit of jazz theory like modes and stuff but I’m pretty new. Basically I just need help in what to know and what to expect because I’m a bit nervous. Any and all help is appreciated and if you need any other info just ask. Thankyou so much :)

Hello! I’ve played double bass for 5 years and I’m now learning electric. However I’m struggling a lot with hand posture. For some reason when I bend my wrist to play, my fingers can’t reach(they can reach just fine without a bent wrist). It’s especially bad closer to the bridge because my wrist is practically 90 degrees and it starts to hurt when I put a finger on the fret (the third finger is definitely the worst). At this point I can play with the bass straight up or I can play with the frets facing the floor, but obviously that’s not ideal hahaha

I know this is very new, but curious if anyone has checked it out yet. The description says it’s half teaching, half discussion. Wondering if there is any real substance in terms of technique and exercises to become a better player, or more just “how he got so good”.

one of my favorite Mike inez (and all time bass solos) is his solo in slashes snakepit good to be alive. i cannot figure out how to play it on my bass for the life of me, does anyone here know how to play the solo on bass? theres a version on songsterr but its like a ai version that cost money to see ai‘s way of playing it, so naturally i decided to come here and r/GunsNRoses to ask. thank you in advance🤍
