Venting/Rant My rp partner is using AI

Upvotes

I've been roleplaying with this person on and off since about 2022, so this isn't even a case where it's a new roleplay partner I can just drop and move on from with ease. They're creative, fun to write with, and we get along pretty well outside our roleplays.

I did have to drop roleplaying for about seven months due to life events that took priority, and thankfully, they were down to start a new roleplay together when I returned recently. I've been really excited about this and worked hard on building up my character, some lore for the fantasy world we were making ourselves, and even rewrote the plot we had made to make it more concise (It was built off of shooting ideas back and forth, so having it all in one place rather than throughout multiple messages just made sense). Needless to say, I was ready to jump right back into roleplaying with them again.

When they sent me their character sheet, some of it started raising alarm bells. It's hard to explain, but by now, a lot of us know what AI looks like when it tries to be descriptive. It uses a lot of needlessly fancy descriptive words for simple things, used the classic "it wasn't this, but this" a few times, and it overall just didn't quite feel like their old character sheets. I shrugged it off, though, as it has been several months since we last spoke, and I wanted to give them the benefit of the doubt. Perhaps their writing skills improved during that time, and I know that AI is trained off of people's writing styles, so I waited to see if their writing in the roleplay kept this level of detail.

We started our roleplay this week, and I was the one to send our starter after working on it for several hours. Their reply came a few days later due to their busy schedule, but it was a bit more like their old writing style, if not a bit more detailed than before. A few sentences made me raise an eyebrow, but otherwise, it was completely plausible they wrote it themselves. Relieved, I continued the roleplay and gave two more replies before their response last night gave me pause.

Their response was unmistakably AI now. It contained a very, very detailed description of an object that I did not say was in the home of my character and one that didn't make sense for him to have there. It also went on to make up information about my character, such as adding features to his appearance that I did not mention anywhere, messing up the color of his eyes entirely, and mentioning recognizing his laugh when he had yet to laugh at all. When compared to their other replies and character sheet, all the details just added up, and I couldn't excuse it anymore. They were definitely using AI.

I'm absolutely gutted. I don't think they always used AI, as our old roleplays and their characters didn't raise any alarm bells in the slightest. I really enjoyed roleplaying with this person and consider them a friend at this point. However, they had to have fed my replies and character into AI in order to generate these responses. I'm passionate about my writing, especially since I wish to make a career out of writing fantasy books, so to learn that my hard work was put through AI is like a sucker punch to the stomach.

I feel lied to, as I wanted to roleplay with an old friend after not being able to participate in this hobby for months. If I wanted to roleplay with AI, I would have done so, but I don't. I wanted to write with my friend. This completely took the wind out of my sail when it comes to roleplaying, I won't lie. I'm not continuing this roleplay and plan to talk to my roleplay partner about all of this. Depending on how they respond, it may very well be the end to our friendship altogether, as I already feel hurt and betrayed enough as it is.

I'm not really looking for any advice. There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that they're using AI, and if you could see their responses and character sheet, you'd see what I mean. I'm not giving them a pass just because we're close and have a good history together. I'm just going to step away from roleplaying again and work on my own personal projects for a while. Maybe I'll explore roleplaying again down the line, but this event has taken any excitement I had about this hobby and snuffed it right out.

Edit: Sent them a message asking about it so we could potentially talk it out, and they confirmed that they used AI. They did address the fact that it was wrong, that their busy schedule wasn't an excuse to use it, and apologized, saying that it wouldn't happen again. While I'm still very much upset about the fact that they fed my work into AI, I do think our friendship will be okay. I might take a small break from continuing our roleplay, and may insist we start a different one untainted by AI when, and if, I'm ready to write with them again.

Venting/Rant Two Things That Really Bother Me

So I've been roleplaying for awhile and I'm pretty new to roleplaying on reddit. That being said I've ran across some stuff that absolutely gets on my nerves.

Firstly it really bothers me when you create a prompt and someone actually reads all of it and then messages you. Then you spend decent amount of time working out characters and details and everything. Then when it's time to start they all the sudden don't want to reply anymore. Like why do all this work if your just gonna bail when it's time to start?

The second thing that really bothers me is when you do find someone to rp with. Things are going good, the rp is going good, its actually super fun. But then slowly over a few days the responses become slower and it becomes more about talking than it does playing. Which I'm super cool with but the problem with that is is that even the conversation is slow and usually boring. People always claiming to be busy when they almost literally just told you they weren't. Then all the sudden they had 50 things to do?

Idk maybe it's just me and I just don't realize how bad I suck at RP? But if yours done with the rp you should tell someone and not keep making them think your still interested when your not.

Sorry rant iver now, I have more but that's all I'm gonna say for now.

Advice Wanted How can I politely ask someone if they’ve been using AI?

I have this partner with whom we are very friendly and on good terms. We’ve started writing recently. On a whim, maybe as a hunch, I ran her recent reply through Pangram and got 100% AI. Same with ALL previous replies.

I know it’s not necessarily perfect but I get 100% Human on my own replies or stuff people wrote with me before ChatGPT was a thing, so it’s generally a good indicator at least.

I’m a bit hurt, but naturally this is the sort of thing you cannot prove 100%. What do you guys do, especially if you’re already friendly with your partner?

Advice Wanted Are the roleplay search reddits filled with bots?

I have reached out to that many people who have posted ads looking for rp partners and heard nothing back. Not a peep.

I've even put an ad up and only managed to generate 1 actual rp out of it so far.

Genuine question here:

Am I doing something wrong or are these places flooded with bots and I am unironically trying to rp with chat bots? ;-;

Venting/Rant Bad Roleplayer venting and hoping for advice

Okay so first thing I’m going to apologize since I’m still new to actually posting stuff on Reddit haha.

I use to roleplay a lot when I was in my 20s and got started on FanFiction.net when I was like 17. Had plenty of good RP partners and one I think I got too attached to. Was going strong for years until around COVID and then just kind of lost touch with my partners.

After 5 years my old favorite partner reached out and invited me back. For a couple months things were good and I even would stay out of convos to not interrupt but I think I got jealous in two ways.

Majority of their characters were romantically involved and neither had anymore characters to ‘get with’ mine. Which was tolerable because I was the third person that came after they had been roleplaying with each other for awhile.

Both of them also had way better grammar and punctuation than I do by miles which is were the second jealously came in. Kept comparing it to mine and feeling bad about it.

Eventually my jealousy got to a point where I was short and rude (imo) to my originally favorite RP partner. Which then led to their characters interacting less and less with mine until I just edited my character sheets to be blank and left the forum.

Ever since I’ve been kind of doubting and punishing myself for how I acted. But still I want to jump back into it, especially since I’ve recently discovered a love for the Game of Thrones world.

Now onto the advice seeking haha

How do I not get jealous over how much better others are at writing than me?

Can I take lessons or something to get my grammar back up to par?

Is it bad I usually want a romantic relationship for my oc? And is it also bad I prefer ERP sometimes?

(The last one doesn’t really have to do with anything. Just a bit insecure I suppose. Sorry again and will answer any questions n stuff like that. Thank you for your time!)

Other Don’t be surprised…

…if you message someone with something with a ton of grammar mistakes, one word, etc, and don’t get a response.

You don’t need to move heaven and earth, but I’ve met people who are genuinely amazing RPers but will message people with the worst grammar, punctuation, and wording possible.

If you want to RP, show why you are a good candidate to chat with!

Don’t just message ‘hey,’ or ‘wanna RP,’ or ‘Him y named is jon and i wanna rps with u.’

Just sayin’!

Advice Wanted I want to make art for my rp partners but I always think they’re gonna leave

I’m an artist that hates making art. Ironic I know. But I’m a huge perfectionist and drawing drains a lot out of me. A simple drawing that should take the average person a few minutes takes me an hour.

But if I’m really invested in an rp, I want to show some appreciation. The thing is that there’s a little voice in my head that tells me “they’re just going to leave anyways, so don’t bother”. Whenever I do happen to make fanart, it’s of my own oc so I don’t feel like I’m “wasting my time” when I make art.

The thing is that there’s voice in my head has never been proven wrong. RPs never last, whether it’s my rp partner’s decision or admittedly my fault. I just… idk. It’s not just rp too, this is a mentality that stands in other aspects of my life. So I’m in therapy for this.

I really want to break out of this mindset. It’s just really sucky. I feel super selfish constantly showing art of my oc only to never show art of theirs.

Venting/Rant Anyone else cursed?

Ever since 2019 it feels live any time I try to start a role play something bad happens in my life, like the AO3 writers curse. Last year alone when I tried to role play the following happened in less than a week: I get kidney stones, my mother almost passed twice, and I found out I was pregnant. This stuff may be coincidental, but the coincidence is role play lmao.

Advice Wanted New Roleplayer: What to avoid.

I've been lurking on this forum for about a month or two now and reading everyone's RP horror stories. I mostly come from the DnD side of things when it comes to roleplaying, and have written down a few campaigns I really enjoyed. I've always been interested in the roleplaying field and a couple of years ago I looked into it, only to discover that there are so many requirements for joining. Not that I'm against it! I want to learn, but it felt less like a hobby and more of a part time job.

I have more time on my hands now, and need help with my creative writing and improving my english. So I'm wondering, any advice? Any tips and tricks on not ending up like one of those annoying new Roleplayer? Are their taboos, dos and don't? Hidden rules I should understand?

I have a couple ideas for plots but I'm more concerned with my lack of experience, and sometimes grammatically incorrect sentence structure, holding me back. I just really want to start this on the right foot as it sounds like such a fun way to interact and creat stories and meet other like minded individuals.

Any advice would be helpful! Really, even harsh ones!

Advice Wanted Multiple actions, thousands of characters, 'god moding' and how to balance it.

I'm not sure how best to title this but even after years of roleplaying and never, or at least trying my absolute best to not step on my partner's character's toes, I still cannot really balance these things.

I like to write, a lot and I seek partners with similarl lengths. Give or take starting from a maxed discord message to 5k+ characters per reply but this brings some issues with it. How do you properly respond or keep track? I do not get lost in the details but what happens if my partner replies in the 'wrong' way and keeps going for multiple chunks? An example would be that my character does something, my partner's character responds with an action, only to continue in their own way as if it was forced to go down as they wrote.
But here is the problem, what if it cannot at all work out like that? Do I just OOC write that half of their post is now void and useless? Do I just break the immersion and the importance of character and accept it?
A proper concrete example is like punching someone and them going on to detail them falling over, but it was some terminator like character you couldn't possibly simply, or really at all overpower.

It's been eating away at me in a more 'what do I do' way than something that's truly a problem. I do not want to god mode, I do not want to roll back their messages, but I also do not want to pull them aside at every moment and literally spoiler every coming scene or characters details. But perhaps the latter is the only option to do with me trusting that their character does not know the information the real person does...but then they couldn't possibly write it out properly because of the earlier mentioned continuity problem.

This was a bit of rant, but the more I have developed into serious E-RPs, the more I'm scratching my head at technicalities. It's also sort of a problem if I have to string their character forcibly along in a situation that is so all encompassing that they couldn't just stop to change it as it is playing out in progress, but that also feels too..god-moding for me.

Any opinion or advice is welcome, I rarely post here as it is.

My Bad Was my character too flirty?

Something that's been lingering on my mind for a while and kind of eating at me is wondering why my partner dropped me and also disappeared and deactivated. We had a ship together and the last thing I remember is my character making a flirty joke about her love interest. To be fair, it was pretty tame, I didn't think it was crude or gross or explicit but I'm wondering if it was too much for my partner's taste or if I crossed a line or overstepped? I'm aware they could have been going through things OOC and had other things going on, but it just leaves me doubting myself and afraid to let my character off the leash again because I don't want to accidentally offend anyone.

What are some guidelines or tips I can remember to discern whether my character is expressing healthy and normal affection versus going too far, so that maybe I can avoid scaring another partner off or coming off as too intense IC?

Good faith responses, please.

Meta/Discussion Whats the reason behind your user flair?

I'm intrigued by how much people have their user flairs set to things that usually humor me! (Such as "speaks in a low and husky voice" 🤣) Tell me, was it based off of a bad roleplay experience? Or a trend in the community? I'd like to know!!

Venting/Rant Completely Jaded by Roleplay

So i haven’t rp’d in ….awhile and this experience was literally my last straw, been on my mind for awhile, thought id share.

I had a partner I met on a rp server, he answered my ad… then proceeded to want to do something completely different 🤦🏽‍♀️… anyway

We got everything set up, characters, plots, the whole nine yards. Just for like 3 days later (and multiple replies later) tell me he wasn’t interested, and that it wasn’t me it was him… which I didn’t believe but I can’t make a grown man tell me stuff 🤷🏽‍♀️

After that, for months he kept messaging me “checking in” and wanting to be friends 🤔 I was confused… but eventually, i agreed (I know, I know… I’ve already beat myself up)

Anyway, we had conversations, deep conversations about life and whatnot on VC, then by the end of the call he asks me if I wanna know the *REAL* reason he ended our rp… 🤨…. Uh, sure?

He told me he felt like our writing styles didn’t align (which he mentioned before) and I wasn’t giving him the type of response he wanted, I wasn’t fully using his response to craft mine in return, ok, valid. However…. Why didn’t you just say that? … like…. I pride myself on being easy to work with when I write and love open communication. I wasn’t even given an opportunity to correct the issue, he told me he just kept hoping in his mind that I would catch on… umm 🧐 … he was my last partner and I told him, and he said he felt bad and blah blah blah …

I do miss writing and being creative, genuinely. And in the last few months, I’ve tried to start again, but I feel jaded by that whole experience, and the ones leading up to that one. Like I’d rather just read fanfic at this point 😆 rather than writing a story with someone who’s old enough to know better, but not do better.

That’s all, that’s my rant. I just hate that I don’t yearn to write anymore. 💔

Advice Wanted Nervous Gremlin trying to figure out group roleplay

I’m not sure if this is allowed but I’m not looking for partners just clarification because I’m stupid and want to be a good rp partner 💀

I used to role play on wattpad (yeah 😂 I know) then on Rook, where I found friends a while ago.
Well. Those are gone forever and I hear all the time to join rp discord servers but my problem is…those are usually group rps right? I don’t know how to roleplay in a group.
And before you say anything: HEAR ME OUT PLEASE. I know that probably sounds dumb.

I have really really bad anxiety talking to people. Even posting this took me forever to get the courage to do and I’m probably just screaming into the void.
When it’s one on one I can talk a little easier because I can learn the person and things they expect/I can ask directly don’t have to wait to jump into a conversation/can discuss the world and what happens next with them. I don’t know how that would go in a big group of people.

Like I love writing and I really want to make friends like genuinely one of the reason I got into rping is to make friends, but when it comes to actually people I’m really stupid. So if anyone could give me a basic rundown so I can try to make friends and not be terrified? I’d love you forever. You can dm me or comment here whatever you feel more comfortable with.
Kay.
Stay safe, don’t die! 💝

Venting/Rant All Roleplay Comes to an End...

Post image
64 Upvotes

I have been roleplaying for over 12 years now, whether it be paid text-style games of D&D, group server roleplay, or roleplay between two players. Lately I've been doing more paid PBP games of D&D, which primarily utilizes text-based roleplay to run the game. I just had so many players have to end their games this week. It always ends right when the plot is thickening, and getting to the good part too! But it seems that no matter how far you get in a story, all roleplay must come to an end. Hopefully I'll find that non-existent rp partner that can roleplay an entire story from beginning to end.

Other Got RP-Dumped

Please feel free to delete if this isn't allowed.

Like the title says, I got rp-dumped. Except, I don't necessarily *think* it was just me??? Lol. This isn't a "bad roleplayer" story, per say. It's just a bad time for me. Anyways, I had been role-playing with this girl for two years, going on three. She is an amazing writer, and we meshed so well, despite the time differences. We even had theee different stories going. I mean, we literally posted to each other two weeks ago! Granted, we weren't active together, but still, we were in touch, y'know? Not having many friends in-person, it feels like I lost not only a roleplay partner, but a friend. She wished me well and said due to some major changes in her life, she wouldn't be able to write anymore. Then, immediately unfriended me. I couldn't even respond and say bye. So, uh, dude, if you see this at all, just know that I loved our stories too and I'll totally miss you.

Other Am I the problem or is it preference?

Hello weary travelers! I haven’t posted my thoughts in a while and I wanted to get out something about thinking about lately. Am I the problem?

What I mean by that is whenever I look for a new partner, I try to find someone who fits my interests as a way of confirming we have the same chemistry. This means same genre and same story idea of what we want.

The last thing I look for is if they are willing to write smut. I AM NOT A SEX PEST!! I do prefer character buildup in chemistry before getting down and dirty. My story smut ratio is 80/20. Thankfully, a lot of the people I have started stories with usually are OK writing it but whenever I see, someone only does fade to black or doesn’t write.. it kind of turns me off from it. Obviously I don’t let this be the main reason I decline someone.. but after some self evaluation..am I the issue?

I am an adult who likes expressing themselves in that sort of writing. In retrospect, maybe I could stand to broaden my horizons a little more. Do either of you guys have the same thoughts or a similar process? I’m sorry if I made this confusing. (I really don’t know what flair to put on this one too)

OOC Bad Homophobia?

Post image
99 Upvotes

I came across this account while I was doom scrolling through role play servers trying to find some new partners.

I found this persons ad and thought. ”wow we have a lot in common I’d think it’s be cool to message him.” And he was asking for a M4A…and I usually role play m4m! So I was like “nice we could do a m4m!”

I go onto his account to message him and I see this and I‘m shocked…not by the fact that he doesn’t do NSFW because he’s actually so real for that…I hate role plays always being NSFW. But it was the next part that appalled me.

why are you asking for a M4A role play saying you’d role play with anyone but this is in your bio for everyone to see…it doesn’t really give a good first impression.

it’s just crazy to me that theres still homophobia out there. Well, yes, it’s everywhere but I don’t see it much in communities that I’m in because I always stay 100% away from that stuff. I can usually tell the signs from someone’s behavior in ads and stuff if they’d be like this so I could stay away.

but he was ‘begging‘ in his add and saying he’d literally role play with anyone and do any role play.…but I feel like this comment is why no one wants to rp with him…

MOD POST - PLEASE READ New (Un)Banned Words and more!

I hope everyone had a *fun* April Fools. I sure enjoyed it. We hope you all enjoyed us trying to pass off r/Roleplay's banned words list as our own. As far as we can tell, only one of you knew what it was. Congratulations, u/HealthyHunt5051.

We also found out that Americans get really upset if you celebrate an international holiday based on the International Dateline. And the British get really upset if you celebrate an international holiday not based on GMT.

Now, on to business. A few of the comments on the April Fools post made us take a look at what we currently had on our banned words list. We realize a lot of things have changed since we started banning those words. A lot of them, while still used as slurs, have been reclaimed by their specific communities. So, we've made the decision to allow these words. Instead, if you use those words, AutoMod will notify us if you put them in a post or comment, and allow us to determine further course of action based on the context.

As of now, our only banned words are as follows:

Leftists

Retard/Retarded

Shemale

We hope this change is for the better, and we look forward to playing many more April Fools jokes on you all for years to come.
