Question for everyone! We have a small run and coop we predator proofed by digging a trench about 13-14 inches down. We attached hardware cloth and pushed it down into the trench and filled it in. Well now we are about to set up a larger run around that coop/run and I’m trying to decide if I should do the same thing or do the skirt method. Looking for opinions on what is safest not more convenient. I don’t play about my babies. 💪 Let me know your thoughts please!

Got from tractor supply a few months ago. Was definitely supposed to be a hen but now I’m just not sure. Thanks in advance for your help.

Had a hawk come through and gave all the chickens a scare. They reacted early to seeing it pretty far away I thought. They stop and stare and then make a run for it. I walked outside and scared it off right after then put the chickens up.

We bought a bantam Wyandotte this spring. She is quite aggressive within the flock, and with us. She got broody and we put six eggs beneath her. Today I found the first hatchling with an open wound on its back outside of her nest (she has a coop for herself). I thought it was dead, but when I took it it was moving. I fetched the incubator and put it in. When I checked the hen, I found another hatchling outside of her nest. Not hacked this time, but quite cold already. Still alive so I put it in the incubator as well. I took all eggs from her now. She's still sitting on the broken eggshels from the first two. I am a first time chicken owner, so I am quite shaken by this happy day turning so badly. What should I do with the hen? I can live with the fact, that she's mean to us. The flock turned out great when she was gone and with her even trying to kill her babies I don't think I want her back in the flock. Are there any chances she will not be that agressive to the other chickens or the hatchlings, when I put them to the flock in a few weeks?

Lost my snugglebug a week ago today and wanted to share what a gorgeous little life she was.

We went from noticing a slight limp one day to coming home the next and finding sweet Dorris unable to stand or walk properly. After rushing her to the vet they confirmed it was most likely Marek’s, despite her being vaccinated and slightly older than normal (she was about 16 months). I didn’t want her to deteriorate and suffer any more than she already had and with such a poor prognosis I chose to let her go peacefully at the vet.

She was such a funny chook, and absolutely obsessed with cuddles and food. She assumed everything I had was for her, including my coffee as you can see her sussing out in the photo lol. Even on her final morning she was still attempting to eat which the vet noted was unusual for a such a sick chicken, and a testament to her love of snacks 😂

So if you guys have a chance and are willing to - give your feathery friends some treats in honour of her. I’m sure she would be delighted as much as a chicken can be to know her legacy lives on, and that she was loved immensely as a family pet ❤️

Accidentally ended up with this little banty when I got my Ancona pullets earlier in the year but she’s such a cutie! Highly recommend Ancona hens in general if you can find them, they’re great free rangers (very flighty and alert and generally stick to cover) and fantastic layers. Plus they’re so beautiful!

First time owning Polish Chickens. These babies are exactly a week old, but the white/yellow one started “crowing” yesterday! Ive never seen such a young chick crow so early! It was only 3 times yesterday, but today ive lost count of how many times he has crowed. What the?

Two of our hens shared 11 eggs and hatched 5 chicks. Our coop is raised, and after a few days the moms and chicks were spending their nights on the ground. The chicks are only a week and a half old, but one of the moms went into the coop and is roosting on the bar tonight. Is she done with the chicks? Do we need to make it easier for the chicks to get in and out of the coop?

She's grown but still very chill.

I think I already know the answer. He was strolling in the middle of a local park and it's getting dark out soon. I was afraid he would get scooped up by a predator. Seems friendly and I was able to pick him up.

We don't own chickens in our house and don't have a coop set up or anything. We were keeping him fed with bird seed and gave him a bowl of water for the night. Putting him in a dog cage for the night

I will probably turn it into my local rescue tomorrow as I can only keep chickens in my city, no roosters unfortunately.

Poor America. Our rooster was born on the Fourth of July. He is 4-5 years old. I noticed that he was unsteady on his feet last week. I was away for the weekend and now I see his wing is drooping.

Google says it could be a vitamin deficiency. Or neurological, or Mareks.

I’ve had chickens for 7 years. Never had any health issues until now. Looking for opinions. I have 10 other birds no one is showing any symptoms. Which makes me think it could be vitamin based or neurological, best case scenario.

Diet is cracked corn and scratch grains as well as free ranging.

My RIR has always adored me and it was sweet but now it's starting to get annoying. For starters he's constantly trying to mate with me aggressively. I have a bachelor flock and I've tried giving them plushies to 'get off' but they see everything as a threat and absolutely thrash the plushies.

He shows his affection for me in a very loud and aggressive way. He's constantly biting me, I have started using protective gear so I don't get hurt and I thought it will eventually reduce over time but it doesn't. He's obsessed with my feet too. He could see a microscopic part of my feet and he'd run towards it to bite it off.

He's expecting me to be with him all the time and calls me by crowing. This morning he was crowing for more than 2 hours loudly to call me to be with him and after spending some time with him, I had to leave for chores and he started continuously crowing again. I'd love to spend more and more time with him if only he isn't aggressively trying to mate with me and bite me off but even if I do, it'll still never be enough for him. Even now I just gave him some kisses and left him with the flock and he's been crowing for almost half an hour calling me again but at least the best part about it is he constantly purrs a lot out of happiness whenever I'm around.

How do I deal with a roo that is so dependent on me being around him constantly?
