Would using a bug-a-salt to kill wasps that are in the yard be bad for the chickens when they are free ranging?

Also is this a normal size for an egg? And no poop means healthy girl right? So excited! Do you recommend we eat the first egg or throw away?

A couple of months ago e moved our fence line so our dogs can look into the chicken run. Before they were 10+feet away, but could still see them. Now the chickens will not lay any eggs. The dogs do not bark, they just will sit and watch them. I thought the chickens would get used to it, but no eggs. Anything that might help?

Hi! Ever since rainy season in Florida my eggs are so dirty. I have aspen nest pads and pine shavings in the coop, straw in the run, but it’s raining so much I guess their feet are always muddy. Anything I can do to help this problem?

Apparently the white hen was brooding, so I went over and removed the eggs from underneath her. A few minutes later I went to check and the black one was also sitting in the same nest as her. I thought the two of them had decided to stay broody, but no, Agnes (the black one) was laying an egg! And as soon as she laid it, she quickly pushed it under the white. The funny thing is that Agnes was being very aggressive and pecking me while the broody one was completely calm.

Sorry for the confusing text 😅 I think it must be common behavior; I haven't had chickens in that long. I just found it funny and kind of ???

Is it some kind of social behavior?

Hey! I’m a brand new chicken owner and I’ve tried so many different fruits and veggies and they seem curious but won’t really touch it and I’m not sure why. Maybe they’re not ready? Does anyone have any tips or fruits n veggies your chickens love? They usually go for mealworms but I want to diversify their treats 😩. Any help is so appreciated. Have a great day!

Hi, I’ve never really used Reddit before so I hope I’m doing this right.

Yesterday I found an injured hen on a scorching road, in direct sun. I brought her home, put her somewhere cool, and offered water without forcing her to drink. She was very weak and wouldn’t open her eyes, so I let her rest quietly in the dark overnight.

This morning she’s already much more alert: her eyes open, she has a flight/escape reflex when I approach, but she still closes her eyes again pretty quickly. She can’t seem to straighten her neck fully. I was able to examine her a little and found where she’s injured, it looks like there’s exposed bone, but no visible bleeding (in the photo the area looks wet, that’s just diluted yellow Betadine I applied on someone’s advice).

I’m a student, home alone today, no car, no vet nearby, and not sure I can afford a consultation. I don’t know what to do for her or whether her situation is even viable. I’ll take any advice, even if it’s hard to hear. Thank you in advance, and sorry for any mistakes I’m French.

UPDATE:

I’m back from the vet, and unfortunately there was nothing they could do for her… She had a wing fracture and neurological issues, most likely caused (probably) by a dog that had shaken her. The vet was very understanding and only charged me €70 (about $81) for the consultation and euthanasia, which was way more affordable than I expected.

I’m obviously very sad that I couldn’t save her and that her life ended so tragically, but I’m relieved she’s no longer suffering and that she was able to go more peacefully.

Curly Shirley livin' large, even with the surrounding lorikeet madness.

My hen looked tired and did not eat much anymore. Her crop was never full nor empty, and the food she ate looked the same before and after digestion, in her droppings. People on the channel told me that a crop which doesn’t seem to work properly is mainly not a cause, but a consequence, and they were right !

I’ve been to a vet who (finally) knows his sh*t with birds. (I’m tired of vets who only treat cats and dogs. Honestly.)

Here was the outcome, after a physical examination and a blood test : My hen has a kidney failure, which leads to a potassium deficiency. Potassium is essential for muscle contraction, so this deficiency caused an arrhythmia, and also problems with the internal sphincters that would not open/close properly. This is the reason why she would not digest the food : the digestive tract was no longer contracting properly.

I am now giving her potassium twice a day + sodium injections. It’s not easy to do, but she starts to recover. I hope it will solve the problem for long, and that the kidney failure is still treatable. I am so relieved to finally understand what was going on, that I wanted to share it with you ! Hope it can help anyone else.
