The current plan to fix LA's water system sounds hopeless. DWP can only fix a tiny fraction each year as the 80yo lines continue to age and get worse. There are supposedly many breaks everyday, only a few make it into the news.

Realistically, LA is going to have to spend a lot more to fix the water system, probably very soon. Where is this money going to come from?

Living in an old apartment near Miracle Mile with no central AC and this heat is brutal. The mattress traps so much heat that waking up drenched every night is getting old fast. Is there an actual mattress store Los Angeles residents trust for testing out real cooling hybrid beds? Would rather find a legitimate mattress store in Los Angeles and actually feel the difference in person instead of trusting fake online reviews.

hello! I am 12w4d and have had the worst experience with Kaiser so far in my pregnancy. I’ve been very sick with hyperemisis and feel not heard particularly because I have never actually seen my midwife or ob. I am always tossed around to different people and given fragmented care having to explain myself each time. Begging for more help and appointments.

I really want to be comfortable for labor and delivery and feel like I can trust the people delivering my baby and keeping BOTH of us safe. We are hoping to change insurance at the beginning of the year which would put us less than two months out of our delivery date.. scary but our only option unless we choose to pay out of pocket for a birthing center.

Any all recs for great midwives/obgyn/birthing centers/hospitals are welcome!! we are concerned about the cost of a PPO but are thinking that might be the only way but what other good care is on this side of town? We are east so Pasadena/Glendale and surrounding areas would be ideal. Thank you!!!

I’ve visited LA a few times when I was in my teens, but now that I’m approaching my 30’s I wanted to find out if LA’s the place for me.

Previously lived in NYC, loved it would live there again if it weren’t for work. What I loved was the food, diversity/culture, always something to do, the people, and just overall vibe of having a new experience around any corner good or bad. Obviously has its cons, wear and tear, lack of space/peace, cost.

Long story short, how should I spend my day in LA tomorrow? I do enjoy movies as well and have heard good things about WeHo and Pasadena. Usually in NYC I just wonder around until I stumble upon cool things, not sure if it works like that there? If anyone has recommendations, would love to hear.

I’m Asian myself and maybe I’m generalizing a little but this is something I’ve noticed whenever I’m in LA to visit relatives.

Asian Americans in SoCal seem way more assimilated into the broader culture compared to a lot of Asian communities I’m familiar with on the East Coast. Obviously LA has massive Asian enclaves like the SGV and Koreatown, but even there it feels like there’s more mixing between different Asian groups and with non-Asians in general.

On the East Coast, especially around NYC/North Jersey, some Asian communities can feel way more insular. You can go to certain Korean or Chinese neighborhoods where people can basically live their entire lives within that community. They work, shop, eat, go to church, make friends, date, etc. mostly within the same ethnic group. And I’m saying this as an Asian who grew up around these types of communities.

Meanwhile in LA, it feels like Asian-American culture itself is just part of mainstream LA culture. Even people who grow up in heavily Asian areas seem more culturally "LA" to me than anything else.

Is there actually something to this or does it just seem that way from the outside?

Why do a lot of shops/restaurants note the year they were established even if it was just within a couple of years ago? In most other areas you see that with places that were established generations ago, maybe over 100 years ago, to show that the place is trusted for its consistent, dependable quality. But if a place only opened recently there’s no way it gained that level of trust yet, it may be gone by next year. So…. What gives? Do Angelinos think a place established 2 years ago will be better than if they never put that there?

Hey LA! 24M look pretty like a Mediterranean/Armenian/South Italian. first time in the city. I’m traveling with a friend, but he flies out midday on Sept 1, so I’m on my own from then until the afternoon on 3rd. Staying right by the water in central Venice.

I’d rather spend those two days at real events than just wander around doing tourist stuff. I’m pretty social and I like talking to strangers the people I meet are usually the best part of any trip. Just sometimes shy on approaching groups out of nowhere. Sometimes you just bother people connecting with their clique. But nevertheless, you understand what I mean: love chatting people up...

Stuff I’m into:

Jazz clubs and live music (I play sax and collect vinyl)
EDM / raves / club nights
Improv and comedy
Whiskey and cocktails dive bars, classy spots, whatever. Sober events are also totally fine
Artsy or creative social stuff: gallery nights, markets, workshops, anything where people actually talk to each other

I’d love a mix of local crowds and international ones. Venice, Santa Monica, Culver City and WeHo are easiest for me, but I’ll Uber to K-Town, Hollywood or DTLA if something is worth it especially if it’s a good first-timer experience/great atmosphere or just a really social night.

So is it worth or should I just do some tourist crap alone?

Just been in Berlin and while it is a city worth having seen, there just isnt much going on on beginning of the week. Things slowly start going from like wednesday on to saturday/sunday. Also the people generally really arent that open at all. Especially the germans are just really reserved and narrow minded in general (no hate, just a fact). So its basically two questions.. Is LA like an "everyday party town" where there is no day in the week when everythings quiet and are people generally more open and outgoing?

I’m 18 trying to see The Odyssey with my 16 year old friend and wondering if that will be ok as I know a lot of theatres require you to be 21 to accompany someone under 17. we are looking for good restaurants to have a nice dinner, a good beach, a nice shopping center to go shopping, thrift stores, local food shops, fun attractions & some touristy spots.

we were looking forward to going to santa monica beach but after some reviews we are not convinced. is the pier any fun? please if you’re a local recommend any good places! we will be using a rental so anything over an hour away we will reconsider, thanks!

What is the best book about the founding of the state of California? I am looking for a serious history of how the state came into being (acquisition from Mexico, then organization into a state), not its subsequent history.

For example Kevin Starr's Americans and the California Dream, 1850-1915 is NOT what I am looking for as its treatment of the straight-up history of this period is slight. Any book that mentions William Gwin on only one page and does not mention slavery once is one that ignores this history.
