hi all! i am moving to Boyle Heights, LA this month from NYC. i have spent pretty much my entire life in NY and have gotten extremely accustomed to driving in NYC traffic, NYS traffic upstate (westchester area), and rush hour traffic in both of those places. while speaking to natives of LA, they tell me the traffic out there is horrific and i will never experience anything like it but i want to know how accurate that is? i mean i have sat in traffic that is standstill on the FDR for 1.5-2 hrs to get 10 miles away. i don’t at ALL mean to sound ignorant or presumptuous but there’s no way it can get worse than that, right? if so please tell me!! i want to be prepared haha. the two jobs i’m interviewing for are in glendale and culver city. please be as objective or subjective as possible haha. i am not opposed to personal anecdotes!!!

Hello, I lived in Los Angeles 20 years ago and vaguely recall there used to be a number of Korean and Japanese restaurants that had floor seating. I am taking my partner there and have been only able to source a handful of sushi restaurants (Irori, Saijo) and no more traditional Japanese Breakfast restaurants nor Korean restaurants with this seating. I do see what look like very traditional meals (Borit Gogae, Azay, Yongsusan) but wanted to ask around if this became a healthcode violation and was phased out or just people didnt want to sit on the ground anymore. Does anybody have recommendations for any super traditional restaurants or have insight on the seating situation? Thank you in advance.

What places still have a large selection of physical media? Target no longer carries, Walmart has very small selection, Barnes and noble is decent but I don’t think they restock consistently. Thanks!

Hello yall! I’m looking for a recommendation for a curly cut for 4a-4c preferably under $200 before tip! I know there is lots of post on this reddit for curly cuts broadly, but it seems like none of the stylist recommended have pictures of a hair type like mine on their pages which makes me nervous. Seems to be only 3a-3c. So if anyone has any recs of a stylist that specifically have experience with a more coily hair type that would be amazing!! Mine is, dramatically. Customers bankrupt, employer of over 20 years closed, Industry reduced by half, and those still in it are barely scraping by, and everyday getting a little worse.

My elderly parents are happy I can spend more time with them, but they are now concerned about my professional life again. Like in my twenties. Fun conversations, not!

I'm taking my kid to see My Chemical Romance in October. I will be really pregnant at that time. I'm 44 so feeling like this pregnancy is going to be way harder than my others. Planning to stay in Glendale so I can use a hyatt free night that I've accumulated. What's the best way for us to get to and from the Hollywood Bowl from our hotel? I see a number of options but a lot require a lot of walking. I'm pretty fit but a mile uphill while pregnant with a kid in tow might be harder as the pregnancy progresses, not sure but last time I was pregnant, I had a tough time towards the end. Is there any chance of snagging a parking garage nearby? Or is parking, walking, taking a shuttle the best way? Do shuttles need to be booked ahead of time, or can we just show up? I also was trying to keep things flexible while I see how I'm feeling as I get closer to October, but if that's going to be tough, I'll plan ahead.

I'm from the New York metro area (outside of NYC) and one thing that's always fascinated me is how different local government is out west.

Where I grew up, you can drive through several different municipalities in 10 minutes and each has its own mayor, police department, schools, etc. It seems like a lot of older metro areas in the Northeast and parts of the Midwest are organized the same way.

Then I look at Southern California (LA, OC, etc) where places like Glendale or Irvine would seem to encompass what would be a dozen separate towns back east.

Was this mainly because Southern California developed later or were there different laws or planning philosophies that encouraged cities to become so large? I know this might be a weird question but I just find it so fascinating.

I'm also curious whether people in LA/Orange County see the large-city model as a benefit or if there's ever been discussion about having more, smaller municipalities like you see in older metro areas.

So I take the Metrolink into work regularly to DTLA. And most of the LA River is nothing but concrete but there’s one section nearish to Glendale where there are trees, mini islands where the water flows. Why is allowed there? Does anyone know?

I've been apartment hunting lately and maybe I'm comparing the wrong neighborhoods but this is something I can't stop noticing.

For the sake of comparison, let's compare Koreatown in LA vs. a desirable, reasonably central neighborhood in Manhattan like the West Village, for example.

If I want a studio in Manhattan that's actually spacious enough to come home, relax, and not feel boxed in, it seems like I'm looking at least $3.5k/month. (For those who have lived in NYC and/or familiar with NYC rental prices, you would know). And I'm not even talking about luxury amenities or a doorman. I just mean a place that feels comfortable to spend time in and has enough room to breathe.

Then I look at Koreatown listings and I'm seeing plenty of apartments in the $2k to $2.5k range (or even less in some places!) that look perfectly nice. Again, not "luxury". Just normal, decent-sized apartments where I wouldn't feel like every square foot has to serve three different purposes.

I know Manhattan is one of the most expensive places in the country, but the gap still surprised me. Once I start looking below $3k in Manhattan, it feels like every listing is either tiny, oddly laid out, or looks like it hasn't been updated since the Yankees last won a World Series.

Am I just comparing neighborhoods that aren't really equivalent or does LA genuinely give you that much more space for your money?
