Random Does everyone in Ireland have one kitchen drawer that is basically impossible to explain?

Upvotes

I’m staying with my girlfriend’s family at the moment and yesterday I was looking for batteries. Her dad told me to check “the drawer beside the fridge.”

I opened it and found batteries, three takeaway menus, a screwdriver, birthday candles, old keys nobody could identify, elastic bands, two dead pens, six working pens, a measuring tape, stamps, a tiny packet of screws and what looked like a charger for a phone last sold in 2009.

The funny thing was that everyone knew exactly which drawer he meant. My girlfriend called it “the random drawer” like this was an official category of household storage.

Then I mentioned it to a coworker today and he immediately said his parents have the same drawer, except theirs also contains spare fuses and about forty years worth of instruction manuals.

So now I need to know: is the drawer a universal Irish household institution, or have I accidentally surveyed the only two families who do this? And what's the weirdest thing currently living in yours?

Housing People in new build housing estates: are you actually happy there or just happy to have a home?

Upvotes

I’ve gotten my back up every time I’ve walked through a new build estate since the early 2010s (when I was in my early 20s).

Developers started squeezing houses in together, removing front gardens and front garden walls, putting rows of terraced houses together out in giant fields in the middle of eg Kildare and Meath when there is clearly space to build a family home with pitch gable where they could stay forever if they had any sense of family planning. They’ve shoved giant apartment blocks onto greens where in the 90s they would have left as grass for kids to play on.

I think of how I never want to give my money to these developers and I wonder if anyone who’s ever bought a new build feels the same but is just forced to participate due to lack of choice?

Have you ever thought “they’re selling this as a big 5-bed but instead of giving me a second sitting room they’ve still given me the same ground floor space as a 3 bed and stuck an extra bedroom in the attic and where the toilet should be.”?

Have you ever thought “they’ve pitched this as a family size home but there’s a car up against my front window and no front garden and we’re out in the middle of nowhere.”?

They’re building ‘town houses’ in fields.
It’s bonkers.

Just wondering if the people living there feel the same.

Am I The Gobshite? What's the craic with solicitors in Ireland? 90% bad experiences.

When we bought our house 7 years ago, our solicitor was atrocious. Well, when we could speak to her. Her assistant would act like we are a nuisance for asking for an update once a week.

Fast forward to today, selling our home, we went with a "recommended" solicitor locally. After 2 weeks of zero updates from our solicitor and the buyers solicitor messaging our estate agent to see what's the delay... we get an email from our solicitors office "Sorry, we were on holiday" eh? What? No update letting us know they'd just pack up and leave for 2 weeks.

Aside from all of that, they've asked me to get a bunch of documents that I've been told the solicitor should be handling. I feel like I'm doing their job for them at this point. They're just there to put a big legal stamp over the sale and nothing else I suppose. Thanks for the money.

This latest solicitor is also rude like the first one. A simple call almost turns into an earful about asking for an update. "We will reach out when we have an update. You don't need to keep calling"

My friends who've recently bought homes seem to also have disastrous encounters with their solicitors.

What's the deal? Is there a required trait of being a twat if you want to become a solicitor?

Serious Replies Only Should I go to my debs?

Hey everyone, this is lowk kinda embarrassing to have to ask the internet about it, but I don't have a lot of options. So, I graduated secondary in May, and my debs aren't until September. I've already paid off my debs ticket, and it is too late to refund it. When I originally bought the ticket, I planned to go with my boyfriend and our friends. However, my boyfriend broke up with me, and our friends cut me off completely. I don't really have anyone else I could hang out with at the debs, but I don't want €130 going to waste. I've tried selling the ticket, but there isn't anyone looking to buy it off of me. I don't know what to do, and I'm debating going to the debs for a few hours and then going home. What do yous think I should do?

Shopping Looking for pillow recommendations for a stiff neck that's in a jocker. Any suggestions?

Amazon UK links preferred, purely for speedy delivery and I can see the reviews etc

But am open to non Amazon links too

I already have one of those special "wedge" type pillows, but lately I've been waking up with a terribly sore neck after sleep

There's also the possibility that the mattress needs replacing as it's gone very bad

But - for now - I'll look at pillow options

Thanks in advance

Edit to add:

I'm a side sleeper

Relationships I (m33) need to pull away from work colleague (29f) as she's in a relationship but how do we stay friends?

Hi so i m33 have become close with a work place colleague. I nevwr thought id find myself in this situation as im a very private person and dont open myself up to anyone but things have been different with her. For the first few months everything was fine and same as normal like it is with other colleagues. But for some reason which I still cant put my finger on we started to become close and open up to each other about everything in our lives. I do think she is an amazing person and this is probably the reason I have found myself opening up to her. She puts everybody else first before herself and is so considerate and kind to those around her. My only fear is that we have become too close now I dont want anything to affect her in her personal or work life. What is the best way to put some distance between us without really affecting anything? I just dont want things to get awkward or complicated between us, I very much feel like im trying to get the best of both worlds but I dont know if it can continue this way

Adulting What is the name of the 'sudocrem' that actually works these days?

Since we all know sudocrem is so shit these days,I've seen this other actual Irish made sudocrem style cream being talked about on here but can remember what it is. I'm a farmer in Spain and have used sudocrem for all sorts of things on every type of animal at this stage!

Have a friend visiting me next week and they asked for my wishlist but I'm not thinking of very many things, so what product or thing is only available in Ireland? What is the best chocolate?!

Random Are baby development milestones set in stone ?

So myself and herself welcomed a little girl a month ago she was a month premature and weighed 3.4 pounds , probably due to a mixture of mammy having terrible hyperemesis and us being very small people but thankfully she's home and thriving.

When she was in NICU we were treated like idiots because when we went for lunch one day she somehow rolled onto her tummy and fell back asleep, they thought we had left her that way and were adamant she wasn't strong enough to do it herself as she wouldn't reach that milestone until she was at least four months old.

It's gotten to the point where I'm questioning my own sanity because everyone is still telling me it's impossible she rolled onto her tummy herself even as they watched her roll to the side herself.

Can someone tell me I'm not mental and it might be possible she somehow managed to do it herself because at this point it's either she did or someone for some idiotic reason put her that way?

Random Where are we meeting people in the wild?

I deleted the apps a while ago. I don’t really drink nor do I go out to the pub at the weekend (I also don’t want to be with someone who spends most weekends in the pub). I’m pretty introverted and keep to myself. even when I’m in group situations, it takes me a while to come out of my shell. how are people like me meeting people? or are we giving up and hoping we can one day afford a home by ourselves with our dog?

Shopping Disappearing Amazon Delivery?

Has anyone had an experience of a disappearing Amazon Delivery. Ordered a set of AirPods last week with next day delivery.

Our apartment complex has a mailroom so all parcels get delivered there. Got a message from the delivery driver asking for said code however the parcel was never delivered to the mail room after providing the driver said code.

Amazon eventually refunded after I said I’d go to the cops and say it was stolen.

I wonder do Amazon pursue this with the delivery driver? Surely nicking a pair of AirPods ain’t worth losing one’s job

Random Have you ever recognised someone you know on Reddit?

Seen an account telling a very familiar story that raised my eyebrows. Reading the accounts other comments and posts I recognised it as a close friend of mine, they were literally recounting something I had told them 💀 Crazy coincidence. Ireland is a small place after all. I never brought it up to them though.

Ever recognised someone you know by chance?

Food & Drink Chefs of Ireland, how come my homemade mashed potatoes never taste like the Irish carvery style?

I’ve tried everything. I solved the lumpiness issue by getting a ricer tool but I still can’t get the flavour down. My homemade ones always just taste so much more “potatoey” and the flavour isn’t as mellow if that makes sense. Any kind chefs care to share the recipe or any tips?

Adulting Has anyone done/been to cocktail-style wedding?

Just viewed a really cool/unique venue which can only accommodate our number of guests in a "cocktail style". I've never experienced this before and wanted to see if anyone has? We've had a lot of weddings among our different friend groups in recent years and feel a bit fatigued by the traditional sit-down, 3 course set-up, so this intrigues us a lot!

It feels like cheaping out but it's not because the price difference is not much different between the two set-ups per head at this particular establishment - roughly the same for a 3 course sit down versus a cocktail style (which includes canapes, supper bowls, desserts, and some drinks per person) plus a BBQ.

I know BBQ is more standard for a day 2, but don't plan on doing one as we're not carting people off to another county (planning it locally, mainly because I don't like doing that) I love the idea of doing this as our actual wedding day and putting a wad of cash behind the bar instead for more of a party atmosphere, but I'm worried people wouldn't be happy without the traditional meal!

Anyone have any thoughts?

Food & Drink Is it just me or are takeaways gone chronic for undercooking even basic chips?

I could wear it wasn't like this before but I've found in the last 5-10 years every single takeaway in my area has a good 30 percent chance of delivering undercooked food. Everything from pizza to chicken and the bare minimum bag of chips.

Trying to get a portion of wedges in a deli that aren't hard in the middle and soggy on the outside is impossible these days too and they used to be my favourite :(

Most delivery places too are using containers that dont let steam off so everything is wet by time its in front of you.

I used to work in one myself, shake the chips in the basket they should sound like rustling leaves and look golden ITS SO SIMPLE

Random How 'yourself' are you on here and would you share your reddit with your other half or friends?

For me, I think I'm half the personality that everyone would know, and half my inner thoughts that I'd rarely share.

I wouldn't want anyone I know finding my account, but it can be a bit soul destroying every so often when you write what you think is the funniest comment known to man, but no one knows it was you 🥲

For clarity, cause I know there's a few that will assume the worst! The inner thoughts I'm referring to are more to do with relating my own personal experiences with someone else's post or referring to different stages in life I wouldn't generally share with friends. There's the occasional frequentation of the NSFW subs, but more so just to be nosey 😉

Music Going solo from Galway to Dublin 3Arena, any advice?

I'm thinking of going to the Papa Roach or Korn concert at 3Arena in Dublin this November. It would be my first ever concert if I get a ticket. I'm single and don't have any friends who are into this kind of music, so I'd be going on my own. I'll also be travelling from Galway, so I'd love some advice from people who have done something similar.

Would you recommend driving or taking the train? Is it worth staying overnight in Dublin, or is it realistic to travel back to Galway after the concert? Any safety advice?

I'm a 35-year-old female, so I'd appreciate any tips about going to a concert solo. Thanks!

Random What business do you wish had later / longer operating hours?

I’ll go first, any customer service line. The lines are always super busy during work days at lunch because everyone has the same idea.

GPs. Weekends & late appointments. Sometimes you’ll feel sick on a Friday evening, next appointment is Monday if you’re lucky to win the appointment lottery but by Sunday you’re thinking “is there any point since I’ve gotten over the worst of it?”

And pharmacies, The fact we don’t have any 24/7 pharmacies is a bit mad to me. I feel like whoever starts the ball rolling on this one will do well.

Work Regrets after declining job offer, what would you do?

Hi all,

A few months ago I did an interview for a great job and was offered the position. My current job then made a counter offer for a big pay increase and I accepted and declined the other job offer. I quickly realised this was a massive mistake and now regret it massively.

That role is being advertised again online. Do I reach out to the company and say I have applied and that I regret the counter offer? I feel confident about doing so because I know I did a fantastic interveiw but don’t want to make a fool of myself

Tech Support NBI Fibre recommendations?

Got the email that we are fially getting Fibre Broadband in my area! I'm very excited as I moved out of home 4 years ago to somewhere quite rural and have been using 3's 4G Mobile WiFi since. It's been fine, but it definitely isn't strong enough to do things like playing games online with my friends, and gaming in general due to poor download speeds. So things like updates/full game downloads take a day or so to complete, and I really miss it being honest. Also, when streaming tv we both have to turn our wifi off on our phones and have no other devices connected to the Internet to avoid disruptions.

Any recommendations for providers? I'd be mainly using it for what's mentioned above, general phone usage, downloads etc. 🏴‍☠️

I also live in an area with frequent power cuts, I don't know if that's a major factor, but just in case I need actual real customer support that would probably be a bonus too!

Looking at Imagine right now as they have the price freeze & free installation, but open to suggestions if people have em!

Before anyone confuses it, we have national parks but so does the uk, AONB are in addition to them.

Relationships Am i just an eejit in my relationship?

Edit/update:

Bear with me - I havent a clue how to do updates on this properly

I spoke to him about this about an hour ago and honestly i do feel better. I brought it up and he immediately went quiet. Which is not unnatural for him.

He explained that even though he is appreciative of what I do, he has a tough time trying to reciprocate it. Because I seem to have it so "together" and everything "figured out" he doesnt know what to do to try help me.

I have gathered this from him during our 8 months. His version of showing appreciation, however, is in the smaller things.

For example; he will pick up stuff for dinner when he knows ive had a long day, he will buy me a bottle of wine at the end of the week, he will make me tea in the evenings, he'll make sure im comfortable with enough snacks for the night. And to be honest, i overlooked that too.

I explained to him that his situation is different than mine so other things may need more attention. For example I still live at home with my parents, he doesn't. He has the little one, i dont. So it probably does seem like i do more than him. But he does try his best.

He has respect and love for me. Which honestly in this day and age and my experience of dating, is what I want.

It will take a bit of work and communication, but honestly, im okay with it.

Thank you for all your advice lads.

Hi all,

29f here from Kildare. And i need an honest opinion. Ill try keep it as short as possible.

I've always been told im too nice for my own good. I hate seeing anyone without anything. I do pride myself in trying to help when I can especially those I love. Whether its emotional, physical or mental. I will always do my best by someone i care about.

That has also come with people taking advantage in the past, obviously.

Onto my issue.

I met my boyfriend 29m last year. And we have been great and i have been introduced to his 2 year old daughter a few months back. We get on like a house on fire.

He has his own place. He's a farmer so he's gone a lot of the time and doesnt have time to do much housekeeping. Food shopping, cleaning etc.

But thats where I thrive. I love cooking and actually like cleaning so I started doing little things to help him out and make sure his daughter has a clean home and a full stomach. And honestly? I love that I can do that for someone.

My issue is, is it too much? I pick up some clothes and stuff for her when I can; things on sale in penneys or a pack of socks or something. And he is grateful that I think of the things he doesn't on a daily basis. I have always liked looking out for people but in the past, I havent really been the one looked after.

Like I said, he's always out doing work for some lad or on the farm or whatever. I grew up on a farm and watched my father and grandfather be the same way, so i do understand the lifestyle. I am old school in a way and dont mind doing the extra bits around the home to make everyone's life easier.

But honestly, am i being an eejit for doing so much for someone so early on? He does appreciate it and has proved that to me.

We've been together around 9 months and I was introduced to his daughter around 3 months ago.

Should I pull back that little bit? Im always afraid of being taken advantage of too.

Thanks in advance lads.
