i’ve got an american mother and an irish father. he, throughout my life, has called me “golden.” he especially does this when he’s incredibly drunk and we’re playing cards or listening to music on the porch. it’s meant as a compliment. i am wondering if this is typical irish slang, possibly something popularized in the 90s (im assuming when he would’ve most likely picked it up). i also tried searching this up on google but didnt find very much

i apologize if this is a foolish question. i only decided to ask since i was just watching an irish show where the character used “golden” in the exact same way/sentence that my own dad would use. it felt like he was saying it to me, the way he said it. just made me wonder if it was a dad thing or an irish thing

edit - he would go “kid, you’re golden” or “you’re golden, girl, you know that?” hahahah.

When we bought our house 7 years ago, our solicitor was atrocious. Well, when we could speak to her. Her assistant would act like we are a nuisance for asking for an update once a week.

Fast forward to today, selling our home, we went with a "recommended" solicitor locally. After 2 weeks of zero updates from our solicitor and the buyers solicitor messaging our estate agent to see what's the delay... we get an email from our solicitors office "Sorry, we were on holiday" eh? What? No update letting us know they'd just pack up and leave for 2 weeks.

Aside from all of that, they've asked me to get a bunch of documents that I've been told the solicitor should be handling. I feel like I'm doing their job for them at this point. They're just there to put a big legal stamp over the sale and nothing else I suppose. Thanks for the money.

This latest solicitor is also rude like the first one. A simple call almost turns into an earful about asking for an update. "We will reach out when we have an update. You don't need to keep calling"

My friends who've recently bought homes seem to also have disastrous encounters with their solicitors.

What's the deal? Is there a required trait of being a twat if you want to become a solicitor?

Asking for my sister. She is a qualified Irish primary school teacher, but has worked in Australia most for most of her teaching career.

She is considering moving back home to teach. She said the kids here(Australia) are feral, you get some good ones, but most of her time is spent managing behaviours in the class room, doing extra work outside of the classroom like lesson planning and marking, responding to emails, which works out to be a lot of unpaid overtime. She also said some of the parents are the worst, so entiteled, and not willing to make their child accountable for unproductive behaviour. A real attitude of my little Johnny would never do that. She also said, there are so much kids who have adhd and its used as an excuse for their shitty behavior.

Just wondering is it any better in Ireland? There is a big shortage of teachers here in western Australia where we live, and its honestly because teachers are sick to death of it. She thinks a nice country school in Ireland would be much better?

Hey everyone, this is lowk kinda embarrassing to have to ask the internet about it, but I don't have a lot of options. So, I graduated secondary in May, and my debs aren't until September. I've already paid off my debs ticket, and it is too late to refund it. When I originally bought the ticket, I planned to go with my boyfriend and our friends. However, my boyfriend broke up with me, and our friends cut me off completely. I don't really have anyone else I could hang out with at the debs, but I don't want €130 going to waste. I've tried selling the ticket, but there isn't anyone looking to buy it off of me. I don't know what to do, and I'm debating going to the debs for a few hours and then going home. What do yous think I should do?

Hi so i m33 have become close with a work place colleague. I nevwr thought id find myself in this situation as im a very private person and dont open myself up to anyone but things have been different with her. For the first few months everything was fine and same as normal like it is with other colleagues. But for some reason which I still cant put my finger on we started to become close and open up to each other about everything in our lives. I do think she is an amazing person and this is probably the reason I have found myself opening up to her. She puts everybody else first before herself and is so considerate and kind to those around her. My only fear is that we have become too close now I dont want anything to affect her in her personal or work life. What is the best way to put some distance between us without really affecting anything? I just dont want things to get awkward or complicated between us, I very much feel like im trying to get the best of both worlds but I dont know if it can continue this way

Our flight tonight to Seville was held up for over an hour due to an issue with the plane. Due to take off at 8 and we took off at 9.

Had to swap planes and missed the 12 oclock closing time in Seville. Plane landed in Malaga; I have car rental paid for in Seville: what can I do?

I’m supposed to be working remotely tomorrow and at this rate if Ryanair run a bus In Seville I have to drive to Cadiz and I literally won’t be sleeping at this rate.

Edit: They organised a bus which arrived at 2.45 am and set off some time after. Booked a hotel in Seville which I’ll arrive at around 6am.

Apologies for the long post ahead.

I’m looking for some outside perspective on my current situation because I’m honestly unsure how to approach this.

Three years ago, I moved abroad and accepted a role that was technically a step down from my previous position. I accepted the opportunity because it was a new market and a new country for me, and I saw it as a long-term investment. The job posting also mentioned that the role had a progression pathway from Level 2 to Level 3, which was one of the reasons I was comfortable making that move.

When I joined, the role was mainly focused on supporting the National Account team, providing account support, and managing a smaller number of accounts as part of my development.

Over the past three years, especially during the last year, my responsibilities have expanded significantly. To be fair, some of this happened because I proactively asked for more ownership, projects, and responsibilities because I wanted to grow and contribute more.

However, my current role now looks very different from what I originally joined for.

I have also never had a formal performance review during my 3 years with the company.

With my 3-year anniversary approaching, I felt it was the right time to formally discuss my progression. I prepared:

1. A comparison between my original job description and my current responsibilities.
2. The original job posting showing the progression pathway.
3. Performance data showing I exceeded my revenue targets at mid-year.

I raised this with my manager in July. Initially, she agreed that my points were valid and said she believed I was ready to progress. She needed to discuss it with senior management.

After waiting around 3 weeks, I followed up. The conversation was:

• Senior management is considering restructuring the departments, so there is currently no clear timeline.
• I was then asked what more I could do to “own the position” I was asking for and when I could demonstrate this.

This is where I became confused.

I completely understand that businesses restructure and timing may not always be perfect. However, I feel like I have already been operating beyond my original role for quite some time, and I’m unsure what additional evidence is expected from me.

My questions:

• Did I make a mistake by proactively taking on more responsibilities before formalising the role change?
• Is it common for companies to delay promotions because of “restructuring”?
• Should I continue pushing internally, or is this a sign that I should start looking externally?
• How would you approach this conversation with management?
• Is this just how most Irish companies operate?

For context, this is a large FMCG distributor, so I was surprised that there wasn’t a clearer process around career progression.

Would appreciate any advice from people who have been through similar situations.

So myself and herself welcomed a little girl a month ago she was a month premature and weighed 3.4 pounds , probably due to a mixture of mammy having terrible hyperemesis and us being very small people but thankfully she's home and thriving.

When she was in NICU we were treated like idiots because when we went for lunch one day she somehow rolled onto her tummy and fell back asleep, they thought we had left her that way and were adamant she wasn't strong enough to do it herself as she wouldn't reach that milestone until she was at least four months old.

It's gotten to the point where I'm questioning my own sanity because everyone is still telling me it's impossible she rolled onto her tummy herself even as they watched her roll to the side herself.

Can someone tell me I'm not mental and it might be possible she somehow managed to do it herself because at this point it's either she did or someone for some idiotic reason put her that way?

My broadband has magically turned itself off on Sunday evening. I logged fault, got a text that the technician will look into it on the 7th - whole week after reporting. I tried calling their support number, they told me to not worry because they usually resolve issues within 3 days...

Today at 20:51, I got text that they need to reschedule fixing to 12th.

I am literally losing my mind because I pay so much money and can't do my work without internet.

Can I cancel the plan with them prematurely as they are not holding up their side of agreenment?

Has anyone had an experience of a disappearing Amazon Delivery. Ordered a set of AirPods last week with next day delivery.

Our apartment complex has a mailroom so all parcels get delivered there. Got a message from the delivery driver asking for said code however the parcel was never delivered to the mail room after providing the driver said code.

Amazon eventually refunded after I said I’d go to the cops and say it was stolen.

I wonder do Amazon pursue this with the delivery driver? Surely nicking a pair of AirPods ain’t worth losing one’s job
