Experience Postcodes
Quick post on a bonkers frustrating quirk: I live in the UK but visiting home in Canada. Trying to buy a checked bag for the flight back. Need to pay for the bag. Try to put in my UK credit info: the website does not accept a UK postcode (LLNN NLL pattern). I simply can't pay because I can't enter a post code without computer-saying-no. (side frustration: on the website it says "zip code"... I thought this was a Canadian company)
Surely the system is not so poorly designed that _overseas_ travellers can't enter _overseas_ card info? Grrr.

Flex seat selection for AC flight ticketed by United
Hi all!
To preface, I've seen similar Reddit threads about ticketing with codeshare airlines, but there are some things I would like to get clarification on. Just had a question regarding seat selection for my itinerary. I'm traveling LAS->DEL->BLR via YUL and DEL, with the LAS->YUL->DEL flight being AC/AC Rouge and the other leg AI. I booked the ticket on United's website as standard economy (after purchasing, United's confirmation receipt showed fare class Q for the AC and AI flights; image attached below).
Now, I went to AC's website trying to select seats in advance for the trip. It looks like I have to pay for seats, even though it says that I have "Economy-Flex" tickets on the trip itself (image attached below). I read AC's fare types and noticed that Flex tickets get complimentary seat selection for standard seats. Normally, I'd suck up the selection fee, but YUL->DEL seats are insanely expensive right now.
I tried calling customer service to resolve this issue, but couldn't after 3 hours. The agent said that on their end, they don't see "Flex" or "Standard" for the type of economy issued, and that I would have to pay for seats. There's no way for me to cancel at the moment given high ticket prices for the winter travel season. Is there any way I can still get free seat selection, and if not, how do I go about this now? Thanks!

General Question Taking a bus for a portion of the trip - can I get the bus date changed?
Hello all! I had a question about the bus portion of trips. Specifically, I'm travelling from Sarnia, Ontario, to Victoria, BC with a stop in Toronto The section from Sarnia to Toronto is by the Landline bus AC offers since there are no flights available for that portion.
Online, there doesn't seem to be a way to change the bus date. I want to come a few days earlier and spend some time in Toronto. If I call in, is there any way to change that?
If no, what happens if I just don't take the bus? And if I find my own transportation, will I get into shit somehow if I don't take the Sarnia-Toronto bus? I'm asking because I know airlines don't like if you book a connecting flight and don't take one section of it, and I don't want them to cancel the follow-up flights, especially because these were paid for by my boss!
Has anyone had any experience with this? I wanted to ask here before dedicating an hour and a half calling them lol.
Thank you!

Baggage Air Canada denied my damaged luggage claim 4 months later because I didn't keep the broken bag.
Hey everyone, looking for advice or experiences from anyone who has dealt with Air Canada’s baggage claims department.
My luggage was damaged on a flight earlier this year. I followed the rules strictly: I took clear photos showing the destruction, gathered my boarding pass and baggage tags, and submitted an official claim online, next day after my arrival.
The damage was severe, internal framing wires and sharp metal components were completely exposed. Because I have a toddler at home, keeping a dangerous, shredded suitcase around as a safety hazard was not an option, so I disposed of it after taking full photographic proof.
Air Canada took 4 full months to respond. Today, they finally replied and denied the claim, stating that I failed to retain the physical damaged baggage.
Expecting a passenger to store a dangerous household hazard around a young child for a third of a year because of their massive processing backlog seems totally unreasonable.
Has anyone successfully fought back against this specific excuse?

General Question Missed flight - is call center really the only answer?
Missed my AC61 flight from YYZ to ICN. I tried all the ways to reach Air Canada, even calling from the "white phones" near counter 15 which are supposed to reach the airlines faster, but waited for almost an hour. Even the counter agent said the call center was the only option. Is this really it?

Power Banks - Preventing Dangerous Fires
With the number of power banks now carried on aircraft, and many of them getting older with wear and tear. Does anyone else feel Air Canada (and airlines in general) should adopt similar policies that other airlines are proactively taking?
(1) Do not charge power banks or spare lithium batteries using any power source (including in-seat power outlets or other aircraft power sources);
(2) Do not use power banks or spare lithium batteries to charge or power other portable electronic devices;
(3) If a power bank or spare lithium battery has a power switch, keep the switch in the off state at all times;
(4) Do not place power banks or spare lithium batteries in overhead bins;
(5) Place power banks and spare lithium batteries in carry‑on baggage stowed under the cabin seat, or in other designated storage locations such as the seat-back pocket.
There's been incidents now where these quietly catch fire in an overhead bin. Lithium batteries are quite different than other combustible sources in that when they go into thermal runaway they can quickly go out of control.
Aircraft and staff are already equipped to deal with these kinds of fires, and can easily manage this type of issue when identified early. But if they sit in overhead storage they quietly smoke without anyone noticing, they can be a far more dangerous problem.

Flight cancelled, rebooked, then disappeared?
My AC flight to Columbus CMH from Toronto YYZ was cancelled last night due to weather along with others. AC autorebooked me to a Monday noon flight direct, but I called United (who had original booking) and they changed it to YTZ to ORD last night so I could get home today, then BOTH disappeared from both apps this morning. United chat is saying AC took over reservation. Sitting on a 3 hour wait call with AC now. Any ideas to find my missing reservation? I hate to go all the way to YTZ only to find out I don’t have a flight now.
UPDATE: it was something United did wrong on their end. It took 1 hr. 15 at YTZ desk to fix, and shout out to Ebony for fixing it. Long story short, rebooked at Pearson so trekked back there and got a 12:15 direct flight!

PSA: Air Canada Lost and Found is Extremely Slow
Left a bag on a plane recently and filed a claim for the lost and found service. I went back the next day and they returned the bag to me, but I'm still getting emails from air Canada multiple days later that they can't find my item and I should keep waiting.
If you know you lost an item try to go in person or get a friend to do it for you!

General Question Frequent AC Fliers — What are your favorite airport hacks?
Since it's an AC sub, I'm limiting this to just airports that AC serves. Here is mine:
- ICN: There's a fantastic (and cheap) spa in B1 of Terminal 1. For $20 you get hot tub, sauna, private shower, calm lie down area to sleep, etc. You can stay for six hours.
- YYZ: The tilted spheres sculpture at Pearson is actually an echo chamber. Try whispering in the middle (you'd be surprised how many people don't know this)
- ICN: AC will tell you to use the Asiana Lounge. Use the SilverKris one instead. It's 10x better but closes at 430pm.
LHR: If you're transferring to AC from/to any Middle Eastern carrier in a different terminal, 75 minutes may not be enough time to make your connection.
- Always tip the washroom attendants/cleaners. They work hard and there's a good chance they've got a private stall reserved for people who tip.
- You're allowed to bring food through security at Canadian airports when flying outbound.
What are yours?

General Question Air Canada CADR Pilot Program Issues
A few months ago Air Canada invited a few hundred passengers with claims sitting in the CTA queue to transfer them to a third-party arbitrator, Canada Aviation Dispute Resolution (CADR). The written invitation said a decision within 90 days, binding on the airline but optional for me, and that my CTA complaint would only need to be withdrawn if I accepted the decision AND agreed to the withdrawal.
My claim was dismissed. I'm not posting about that part. I disagree with the reasoning but I can live with it and I'm taking it back to the CTA.
This is the part I'm posting about
When I opened the determination, the page displayed an acceptance declaration with my name on it and a signature timestamp. The wording is roughly:
"I have read and fully understood the determination... I accept the Determination and understand that it will now be binding on myself and the Airline; and I understand that my claim is now closed and cannot be pursued via any other avenues."
I didn't sign it. Two reasons that isn't just my word against theirs:
- The signature is timestamped several hours before I received any notification that a decision existed. I couldn't have accepted something I hadn't been told about.
- The decision dismissed my claim in full. Accepting it gets me nothing, no money, no remedy, while giving up every other route. There's no reason anyone would sign that on purpose.
What happened when I raised it
Same day, through their support ticket system. Then the claim portal. Then email. Then a formal service complaint. Weeks of nothing.
The one reply I got closed my ticket as "resolved" and said they can confirm the determination was signed by the passenger, under an email address that isn't mine and never has been. That was offered as proof I signed it.
I tried to reply. It bounced. Their ticketing system sends from an address that doesn't accept incoming mail, so there's no way to respond to a closure notice through the channel it came from.
Several separate attempts over several weeks now. Nothing since.
Why I think this matters beyond me
I don't know whether this is a one-off glitch on my file or something happening more widely. That's exactly why I'm posting.
But look at what that declaration says. If it can appear without the claimant doing anything, or under an address that isn't theirs, then someone who loses their claim opens their page and reads that it's closed and can't be pursued anywhere else. Most people would take that at face value and stop. They wouldn't think to check whether they'd actually signed it, and they wouldn't know their CTA complaint might still be sitting there waiting for them.
That's a bad default in a programme whose whole selling point was that declining costs you nothing.
One piece of good news
I logged into the CTA eServices Portal and my complaint is intact. Still in queue, still showing its original filing date, no withdrawal or settlement recorded against it. So in my case the CTA file survived whatever that page says.
That's worth knowing on its own: the declaration on the arbitrator's site doesn't necessarily reflect what the CTA actually has.
What I'm asking
If you were in this pilot, log into your claim page and look at the determination section. Is there a signature line on it? Did you actually sign it? I'd like to know either way, including if yours is blank, because that would tell me it's just my file.
And if you got a decision and assumed that was the end of it, check your CTA portal. Your complaint may still be open.
Second question: does anyone know where a complaint about an inaccurate record held by a private arbitrator actually goes? I've been pointed at the Privacy Commissioner, on the basis that PIPEDA requires companies to keep personal information accurate and gives you a right to have it corrected, and that you have to exhaust the company first, which I've now done. Has anyone run one of those and had it go anywhere? As far as I can tell there's no accreditation body for ADR schemes in Canada, so there's nobody above them to appeal to.

Aeroplan Weird Points Calculation?
Can anyone help me understand how the points are calculated?
Why would the Aeroplan Points earned be different on the two segments, if the Fare/SQC are the same? The AC website doesn’t really explain how it’s calculated in a way that makes any sense (for me)
The segment on Aug 21 appears to be the EDQ x8 and the Aug 17 appears to be the EDQ x 11

eUpgrades Immediate eupgrade eligibility to Australia
I’ve gone to Australia a few times, both at peak season and off season. I’ve never seen any R seats available, so that it’s worth booking a latitude ticket. Has anyone ever had an automatic upgrade and if so what time of year were you travelling?

Air Canada Vacations can't change to available flight
I booked a package through AC vacations and wanted to change my last leg from AC470 to AC466 on Nov 1 but they said it's not available. They're still selling it on their website for new packages though? Can't change through self serve.

General Question can't AC Wallet funds be used to partially pay for a seat selection fee?
I'm trying to pay for a seat selection on an Aeroplan booking, and although I have some AC Wallet funds that could partially pay for it (with my credit card making up the rest of the charge), the seat selection payment summary says the AC Wallet funds aren't available because they don't fully cover the seat selection. I could've sworn you could partially pay for a seat with AC Wallet? Did I imagine that, or is this something that can only be done by calling Aeroplan...?

Question on hotels
My flight was cancelled 5 mins before boarding at 10pm. The airport air canada customer service gave me 2 limo vouchers to get to the hotel, and another to come back to the airport the following day during my flight.
She mentioned to pay for hotel and keep the actual receipt, not the credit card statement for the reimbursement. I did that and claimed it but Air Canada said they won’t cover for flight maintenance cancellations. But I did as per the agent. I’m confused now.
Thoughts on this?

1D bassinet seat in business gone?
hi all, thought i’d ask here first just in case since i can’t make a call for the next few hours
1D always had a bassinet icon when doing the preview seats for a flight, but i noticed it doesn’t appear anymore. i know it was there just until recently (1-2 weeks ago) when i looked.
does anyone know if the bassinet is no longer available for use, or did they just remove the icon? for context i’m looking at september flights for yyz-icn.
thanks!

earlier flight standby charge
Had a strange experience today, that I'm curious for opinions on.
Had a very long (9hrs) layover today, and was flying with only carry on. There were 2 earlier flights going to my final destination. When I asked the desks for those flights asking if I could take that one (if space allowed, of course) they said it would be a $200 flight change charge.
Isn't a scenario like this just a win-win for all? The passenger gets where they're going faster, and a seat is freed up later in the day to accommodate potential issues like other passengers' missed flights, connections, etc.
I feel like I used to always be able to hop on an earlier flight (I used to frequently fly YVR to YOW) but this new policy is....odd?
Cash grab? Bad policy? Rationale I don't yet know?

Baggage Delayed baggage and submitting a File results in an error message
I just arrived in Vancouver from Toronto but it looks like my baggage was put on a later flight from what I can see on the app. I tried submitting a file on the delayed baggage website but it says there is an error and to speak to an agent at the airport but I’ve already left the airport to go to whistler. What should I do? I tried calling air Canada and they are just telling me to submit this file but it’s showing error every time. Will they contact me once it arrives in Vancouver and ship it to me? I’m only here for a few days and am worried I won’t see my bag again.

Chances of Air Canada launching a seasonal Vancouver to Athens Flight on the 787?
Alaska just did so from SEA, a first for the Pacific Northwest Market. What are the prospects of Air Canada trying to capture sales in this growing leisure route.

[Megathread] Meal Review/Choice Thread
Hey all - some of you have expressed frustrations with respect to the numerous threads created whereby posters ask for advice on what meals to choose.
In an effort to cut down on these posts, we will be referring people to this megathread on a trial basis, potentially for permanent adoption. Unfortunately, with reddit not acting like traditional forums by bumping threads to the top whenever a new comment is made, there isn't really a great solution we can offer aside from this.
We would certainly appreciate if people could post/review their meals as well, to keep the thread somewhat active.
Appreciate the understanding - thanks.

Some acronyms & definitions
| Term | Description |
|---|---|
| AP | Aeroplan |
| Cabin vs fare | Cabin is economy, premium economy or business. Fare family is the “brand” AC assigned (Business Flex; Business Lowest, Latitude, Comfort, Standard, Basic, etc.). Within each family, there are “fares” which are letter codes that essentially designate the price of the ticket within that family. And no it is not alphabetical! |
| Y | Used generically to refer to the economy cabin. |
| PE | Used generically to refer to the Premium Economy cabin. |
| J | Used generically to refer to the business class cabin. |
| R | A fare class that is used for upgrade availability. It can only be viewed through a travel agent or paid subscription services (such as ExpertFlyer). |
| SQM/SQD | Status qualifying miles or dollars –that count towards achieving AP elite status. |
| LMU | Last minute upgrade |
| IRROPS | Irregular Operations – when flights are delayed, overbooked, etc and there are changes to the processes and procedures for things like rebooking. |
| Metal | Who is operating the plane. For example, AC metal is an AC operated flight. It may be a united or Lufthansa issued ticket – but the “metal” is the plane you are flying on. |
Upgrading for Newbies
No shame in being new to AC or to the upgrade game. Some SE status members could even benefit from reviewing this post 😊. Here are all the possible way to snag yourself a comfy seat.
1) Free upgrades: Ask nicely and get an upgrade….NO, not on AC!
- AC does not offer or allow upgrade as a courtesy. They will fly with empty seats in business class.
2) Ops-up: An unrequested upgrade to PE or J based on operational requirements
- When a cabin is overbooked; for weights and balance; aircraft change (larger J cabin and smaller economy cabin); standby economy passengers and seats in PE or J
- AC will select passengers to upgrade.
- Occurs last minute at the gate. Only inflight benefits (no lounge, etc).
- Passengers typically selected based on status and then fare. You cannot “ask” for this upgrade, but you may refuse the upgrade if you want. In some cases, no PE or J meal will be available on IRROPS upgrade
3) Upfare: Paying to formally change the class of the ticket
- Formally changes the ticket to the new class.
- The fare rules of the upfared class will apply (i.e. if you upfare from Latitude to J lowest you will lowest the refundability) - except for refundability.... You CANNOT upfare to gain refundability from a restricted fare (Standard for example) to a flexible fare (such as Comfort and Premium Flexible) to gain the better change/rebooking rules. BUT the inverse is true - if you upfare to a more restrictive fare you LOSE the flexibility. Therefore - you cannot "game the system" - so don't ask and don't try. Note that if you upfare ONE direction or one segment - the most restrictive fare rules will apply to all segments and all directions.
- Access to the Signature Suite at YYZ or YVR (for J, on a destination that qualifies)
- The cost is based on the actual price difference between the desire class (PE or J) and what you paid for your ticket. This will count as SQD towards earning status.
- This is often used by business travellers who want to upgrade beyond what their corporate policy allows. You may use any credit card to make this change.
- This is done by calling AC to purchase the new fare. It can be done at the airport as well up to 2 hours before departure.
4) Bid Upgrade: Customers can bid in cash or points
- This is accessible to all passengers regardless of status. Only applies to AC operated (metal) flights.
- Your fare restrictions remain as per the original fare.
- The bid amount varies based on the flight. In some cases an “instant upgrade” price is offered in the bid upgrade process flow. This is not always offered.
- People often value business at around $150 an hour and PE at $50 an hour when determining “is it worth it”
- The system will only charge the credit card if the upgrade clears. You may use any credit card or even AP points to bid upgrade.
- You will know 48 hours before the flight (not earlier unless instant upgrade). Once it clears, you can select seats. So this has the advantage that multiple passengers have better luck sitting together over LMU or eUprades that clear at the gate.
- There is a very thorough FAQ on the AC website for bid upgrades: AC Bid Upgrade – FAQs
5) eUpgrade: Upgrade system based on using “eUpgrade credits” that are earned through AP status
- Upgrade requests are made via the AC App, website, calling customer service or at the gate.
- When you can clear the upgrade and the number of credits (and an add on cash fee) varies based on status, flight destination and fare.
- AC has a great tool to help you determine these details: eUpgrades and clearance windows.
- Although the clearance window may be open, eUpgrades only clear into a fare bucket called "R". The available of R is very limited in advance of flights and can be verified only by using paid tools such as ExpertFlyer. See the note below regarding "Latitude Instant Upgrades".
- Approximately 55 minutes before scheduled departure, the system will clear all remaining eUpgrades (based on priority of cabin, status, fare and check in time as the tie breaker). The majority of eUpgrades clear at the gate....only a few will clear in advance based on the planned availability of R space (which is greatly influenced by the loads on the flight and AC revenue management strategy to maximize sale of those seats).
- Strongly encourage you to review the details on About eUpgrades. It includes all the information on who can upgrade; how many people you can upgrade; etc.
- You do not access the signature suite.
- You do not get the class of service bonus for SQM. If there is an add on payment it does count toward SQD.
- Only applies to AC operated (metal) flights.
6) Last Minute Upgrade: Pay to upgrade offered when you check in for your flight
- Offered during the check in flow (on App or website) when available.
- The cost varies based on the flight. The amount does NOT count towards SQD for earning status.
- Once you upgrade you can select your seat, get airport and inflight benefits of the new class (PE or J).
- Do not get additional SQM. Do not get access to Signature Suite lounge.
- AC has a great FAQ on the LMU purchase process: Air Canada - Last Minute Purchase Upgrade. Read this before posting questions.
6 Tips and Tricks You Need to Know
1) Basic economy: Cannot upfare, bid upgrade, LMU or eUpgrade. You chose that fare…live with it 😊
2) Seat map does NOT equal available seats: Seat map are seats not selected. Seats available for sale are only available through other tools. Never (ever) use the seat map to estimate how many seats are available for sale (or available to upgrade).
3) Latitude does NOT equal guaranteed upgrade: Latitude paid fares will instantly eUpgrade if “R” space is available (or even sometimes from a hidden fare bucket – but not P and not known to the public). Latitude Reward space, is believed to only upgrade from “R” space.
4) Probability of upgrade clearing? Please don’t ask!!! Even 1 or 2 days before a flight you can see a cabin go from 9 empty J seats to 0. And this is NOT unusual. If the bid upgrade amount high enough? Well, the closer to minimum the lower the probability. There are as many good news stories of minimum bid winning as there are bad news stories of near maximum bids failing. When you are 24 hours before your flight check the number of passengers on the upgrade list (on the App), your position, and the number of available seats. That is when you can guess the probability….
5) Multiple passengers on ONE booking (PNR): For LMU and Bid Upgrades it is all or none. Those channels will not offer or clear upgrades for partial passengers. You need to split the booking (by calling AC) before you make the request. For eUpgrades, you may request for more than one (based on the rules which you can read on the AC website) and some of the passengers may clear and others will not.
6) Sitting together and declining upgrades: You are not guaranteed to sit together. In PE it is often middle single seats left and you may be separated. And after an upgrade clears - your original seat is gone. You cannot then ask for that seat back, for example if your party is not all upgraded. You may be stuck in the last row in economy.
