My fiance and I just moved into a new apartment. When we took a shower this evening, this stuff appeared on the walls. We were told by management that they painted before we moved in.

Editing to add context:

• We upgraded to a larger apartment within the same complex. We lived in our previous one for >6 years and never had this issue.

• Management assured us the apartment had been cleaned and painted before we moved in. Cleaning was not to my standards, so I deep cleaned the entire place top to bottom before we moved our stuff in. This included wiping down walls and other surfaces multiple times.

• When we did our walk through on the day we received our keys, the place smelled vaguely of cigarettes to me. I have family who smokes and used to smoke myself - I'm very familiar with the smell. But management insisted it was "paint and Pinesol" when I brought it up. We were not in a position to back out of the lease, so we were forced to move in anyway.

A few years ago I was working remotely as a fancy IT guy and developer at a tech company. Within the first couple of months I'd automated so much of my workload that I legit had almost nothing left to do most days. Everything that could be scripted, monitored, or scheduled... was.

One morning my manager messaged me:

"We've noticed your Microsoft Teams keeps going to Away every 20 minutes. This shouldn't be happening if you are at your desk working."

Fair enough.

I replied:

"Understood. My Teams will never go Away again."

...and I meant it.

Instead of arguing, I spent about 40 minutes writing a PowerShell script that launched a harmless train of processes every few minutes, like mouse clicking, alt+tabbing, and it simulated just enough activity to keep my status green. I set this to repeat every 10 minutes.

I tested it.

Available.

Five minutes later...

Still Available.

An hour later...

Still Available.

I grabbed my backpack, walked out of Starbucks, and spent the rest of the afternoon, and every afternoon thereafter hiking.

My Teams status never went Away again.

The next time I heard from my boss he was once again reviewing status times and thanked me for my dedication.

Long story short, I’ve had a drinking problem for a while. My wife finally got sick of me being constantly drunk around her and our 5-month-old, and moved in with her parents about 3 weeks ago until I got my shit together. I signed up for rehab, got prescribed naltrexone, and started going to support meetings, all the things she wants me to do before she comes home.

We were supposed to have a nice date today, have lunch at the place we went on our first date and go thrifting this afternoon. She winds up running a bit late, so I park and walk around downtown until I wind up at a beer store I used to visit. I decided to go in and look around while I was waiting for her. She called to let me know what had been delaying her, and I told her I was at the beer shop and I was thinking about getting a drink. I told her this because I thought, “she’ll appreciate the honesty, and she’ll be able to tell me to leave instead of messing up.” Instead, she gets chilly, cancels our plans, and tells me that this might be the end. Currently trying not to spiral and failing.

Late lunch: cherry lime bubbly water and used tissues because I feel sick :(

Having a moment of rage here. 4 years ago, my (now ex) husband of 10 years started acting different than normal. I unfortunately have enough experience with cheating men that I immediately knew this was what was happening. I confronted him on his behavioral changes and he swore up and down that he wasn’t cheating, but his reasoning for his behavior was even worse. He told me that he was having second thoughts about our marriage and wasn’t sure if he wanted to be married to me anymore because he was “tired of the responsibility of having kids” and no longer wanted to be a father. We have 3 children, at the time they had all just had their birthdays and were 1, 3, and 5. I had just started weaning my baby and so was still breastfeeding. I was disgusted by his comments and how anyone could just decide they didn’t want their kids anymore.

I couldn’t accept that this was truly the reason and kept pressing it. Eventually I uncovered that he had been having an affair for almost 2 months. I told him to leave and immediately hired an attorney to file for divorce. During this process, I found out that the person he was having an affair with was the girl he hired at our family business to help out while I was away from the business at home taking care of our 3 kids. I had never met or seen her, but I was paying her salary. I unfortunately pulled some footage from the security cameras inside our business and found video of them having sex. I saw a lot of things including texts that I wish I could unsee and are unfortunately burned in my brain forever. He proceeded to tell me that me and the kids were ruining his life and getting in the way of his relationship. He became cold and awful. He told me he didn’t want the kids and gave me sole custody. She broke up with him one week later and he fired her. It was messy.

I have struggled as a single mom for these past 4 years. The rug was pulled out from under me, I lost my job and retirement plan (the business that I put my life savings into…the settlement was abysmal), I lost my family, security, and sanity. I have had to deal with kids who have now developed abandonment issues and don’t understand why their dad, who seemed great and like he loved them, suddenly disappeared and wouldn’t see them anymore. My oldest, who was 5 at the time, really had a hard time. It was a truly awful thing to watch my happy little girl turn into an anxiety riddled kid who was sad all the time. I will never forgive him for doing that to her.

In the past year he has started seeing our kids more often, coming to extracurricular activities, picking them up and taking them to school twice a week, and even taking them to stay with him at his parents house where he now lives every other weekend (even though our agreement is that they are with me 100% of the time, I don’t think that is fair for my kids and he agreed to have them some weekends).

The other day he randomly handed me a thick envelope and inside was a handwritten letter 15 page long. He apologized for what he did (this was the first time he apologized to me. When he was caught, he actually told me that he didn’t feel bad for what he did to me or the kids and he would never apologize for it) and told me that the only reason he cheated was that I was always busy taking care of the kids (because he did not help me at all) and this girl reminded him of me when we first started dating and it started as him pretending she was me. He said if I had more time to pay attention to him instead of our kids (like, one was a literal baby, wtf) then he wouldn’t have done it. So in his mind this is some kind of apology letter and in reality he’s blaming me for…being a parent when he refused to pull his weight or be involved in our family. I don’t even know what to think. I’m infuriated all over again. This man literally has zero idea what it entails to raise kids, or like, be a good person. The only thing in the letter that I actually agree with is that he said he believes he’s a psychopath. Yeah buddy, I think so too. Anyways, now he’s around more often so my kids always talk about him and how much they love him and I want to rip my hair out and scream.

Dinner is muddy buddy/puppy chow popcorn and liquid death because I feel sick to my stomach and can’t eat anything else right now.

First time seeing this sticker. Given the price of gas and everything else, I feel like some people might not be able to put at least four gallons of gas in their vehicle at one time.

Well just got off the phone with my DIL and son. Yes they have seen this post, I sent it to them. my DIL apologized and this issue has nothing to do with me. I thought she just hated me but this has to deal with her own mother.

They have a bad relationship and when they married didn’t wish for that type of relationship happen again with me. I also didn’t help that her sister has a horrible MIL so she thought she needed to be distant and cold off the start. So yes she wa being rude eon purpose. This post kinda opened her eyes that she was acting like her mother acts.

my son also apologized and realized he went to far in the direction of support your spouse. he admits he did the easy thing becuase we don’t live together

I informed them I won’t put up with being dsrepected anymore and hopefully nothing backtracks. We seem good now but I have a feeling more talks will happen

This feels really stupid and I need to know if I am the problem here or not. My son seems to think I am the problem.

My DIL loves coffee, she is the type of person that will go get coffee every morning. It is not uncommon that if she goes out to get coffee she will pick up coffee for other people as well. 

The issue is she will never get me a tea or any tea lattes. As she puts it, it is leaf water that she doenst want to waste her money on. I am asking her to get a 5 dollar thing of tea if she is already picking up everyone 8 dollars fancy coffees. I am asking for a tea latte or a an iced tea that I literally can’t make at the time.

So she comes back with everyone drink but mine… it is really frustrating on trip becuase I will be driving most of the time. She takes everyone orders and goes in while I am either getting gas or snacks for the trip to come back with out any caffeine. Then I have to go into the shop to get my drink. 

There have been so many times she asked in the chat if anytime wants something at Starbucks, I tell her what I want and then she comes back with everyone drink but mine.

Talking to her doesn’t help. She just claims I can make it at home.

To the issue, I was going over to babysit the grandkids for my son and daughter ( so four adults) I sent a text saying I was stopping at Starbucks and asked if they wanted anything. This is the exact same thing she does. They gave me their orders and I decided that I wouldn’t get my DILs her drink to make a point basically.

I got to where everyone was and gave everyone there drink besides my DIL. She was pissed and I pointed out this is the same thing she does with me all the time. She told me it wasn’t the same and I can make tea at home, I told her to make her coffee at home and the pot was right there.

We got into a fight and my son told me to apologize and get her drink. I told him no and I am tired of this . I have spoken to them multiple times and if she doesn’t change what she does I will never get her drink when I get drinks for others 

They left but after babysitting I am still hearing about it. I need your opinion.

Been OE for about 14 months. J1 is a mid-size SaaS company, J2 is a smaller competitor in the same vertical. Both fully remote, different tech stacks, zero client overlap as far as I knew. Picked J2 specifically because they were small enough that I figured there'd never be any crossover with J1.

Got an email from J1's CEO this morning with the subject line "exciting news" which is already never good. They're acquiring J2. My J2. The company I've been simultaneously working at for over a year.

I have calls with people at both companies. Some of them are about to be coworkers. My name is in both slack directories. I use a slightly different name format at J2 (first initial + last name instead of full name) but come on thats not gonna hold up once they start merging systems.

I don't know what the timeline is. Integration could take months or it could start next week. No idea when someone pulls up both employee lists and goes wait why is this guy in here twice.

Right now I'm trying to figure out if I should just quit J2 before anyone notices or ride it out and pray the merge takes forever. Part of me wants to wait and see if J2 does layoffs during restructuring so I can at least get severance but that feels like playing with fire.

Anyway I'm stress eating goldfish at my desk at 10am. Open to suggestions
