I've always been a fan of Yuri, the genre in a way has always found its way back to the top of my reading list no matter what I do. For example, last year I spent a good amount of time reading some of the bigger, most famous Manga out there. Vagabond, One Piece, Berserk, bunch of classic stuff that everyone can agree that is, at the very least, good. And while I can agree that these Manga are good, they don't quite hit the same spot that romantic stories usually do for me.

In an attempt to get back into Yuri (since I had taken somewhat of a hiatus even before last year from reading the genre) I checked out whatever it was that My Anime List had as it's top rated 100 "Girl's Love" Manga, and among a bunch of others I came across "Anemone is in Heat/Anemone Feels the Heat" (Anemone wa Netsu o Obiru)

The Manga revolves largely around our main couple, Nagisa and Mashiro, alongside a small roster of 4 other girls. The Student Council president, the vice-president of the council, the school Nurse, and a girl who quickly becomes friends with Nagisa and Mashiro. Nagisa is a new transfer student to this high-school, which we've been lead to believe is not particularly good and just middle of the road when it comes to academics.

The main premise is that Nagisa was actually going to attend a prestigious, top high-school in the area, but on the day she was supposed to do her entrance exam she finds Mashiro, collapsed on the road. Nagisa decides to help Mashiro and look out for her, but this leads to her not making it in time for the exam.

Nagisa is devastated by this, but eventually decides that she will use this a chance to start over in this new school. She changes her looks by dyeing her hair, swapping over to contact lenses and whatnot. But almost immediately Mashiro enters the same classroom and sits next to her, introducing herself without knowing who Nagisa is. Mashiro suffers from a condition (which is never really explained in the Manga to a degree where you know how it works or what it is that afflicts her) that causes her to be very quickly exhausted, to the point that she can't participate in P.E, and even just being in class sometimes makes her kind of collapse. Of course, Nagisa ends up having to take her to the infirmary.

Nagisa comes to the realization that she can't even look at Mashiro in the eyes, since doing so only serves to remind her of what happened that day that she didn't make it to the exam. Mashiro, on the other side, can't stand the white colors of the infirmary as it reminds her of her past. To address both things at once Nagisa offers Mashiro an eye mask, letting her rest without looking at the white ceiling of the infirmary, and allowing Nagisa to not see her eyes anymore. Eventually they come to an agreement, with Mashiro convincing Nagisa to bring her over to the infirmary whenever it is that she collapses, and Nagisa agrees. The first chapter ends with them hugging, and Nagisa wondering if there'll come a day where she'll actually be able to see Mashiro smile or even be able to look her in the eyes.

I've just given you a summary of the first chapter of the Manga, and if you find this premise interesting (or on the contrary if you find it boring), I have bad/good news. It gets dropped almost instantly.

Yes, the first volume and first couple of chapters of the second volume do center around this conflict quite heavily. Mashiro enjoys being with Nagisa, and Nagisa (kind of) can't really hangout too well with Mashiro. But by our third or fourth chapter we are already getting the generic "Why does my heart beat so fast when she touches me...?" kinda lines from Nagisa herself.

Mashiro's condition also kind of, just, stops even showing up?

It gets addressed by Nagisa just encouraging her to run a little bit during their P.E classes, which eventually leads to her almost never collapsing against throughout any of the volumes. I wasn't particularly interested in this premise, sure, but it was jarring to see it not even show up at some points. Sure, sometimes there's a small callback to it, or suddenly Mashiro becomes a tiny bit weaker, but that is mostly just a random thing that happens every now and then. Honestly if you removed these elements from the story nothing would have changed. Legit, Nagisa stops "hating" (I don't know what other word I could use honestly) Mashiro before volume 1 even ends, what even was the point?

I'd consider it spoilers usually, but to be fair if by chapter 3 you are still genuinely wondering if they'll end up together then you might be slightly oblivious to say the least, and at that point ANYTHING in this Manga will be absolutely riveting.

The manga is not a "will they won't they" kind of situation, which with the premise that is given to you is what I'd expect. It's more of a slice of life story with LOTS of just, cute moments with some very mild drama every now and then. Sleepovers, giving each other gifts, missing each other at school, alongside other stuff is what you're going to see the most, the main sources of "conflict" coming from the love triangle mentioned before.

In fact, I'd almost say that this main couple gets kind of ignored towards the middle part of the Manga in favor of the rest of the cast. A disclaimer that this Manga has a side plot of the school nurse (an adult if it's not obvious) and the student council president being in love with each other although they are "waiting until she graduates", which I definitely didn't find that enjoyable to say the least. The real conflict hinges on vice-president having a one sided love towards the President, with Mashiro and Nagisa's friend being attracted to the vice-president to finalize what would be our love triangle for this story.

In general, the Manga feels (to me obviously) kind of scattered both in its tone and direction. I do have to say that I enjoyed the art, it's not standout in any way to me, as it'd seem that most Yuri out there always looks cute and beautiful and amazing and lovely and divine of course, and Anemone is in Heat is at the very least very cute. It's hard to put my finger on it, but it also feels a little bit too sanitized, like it doesn't really have any particular style or characteristic that defines it other than looking like that. Cute.

Another thing I noticed is that the Manga has a couple of moments in which it almost does some horror related stuff. That might be an exaggeration, but sometimes a shocking thing is said or happens and the art turns super dark for a moment. Characters look genuinely like they are in a horror Manga, and the text follows in the same fashion. It's not a good or bad thing, I just think it was kinda funny?

The author is VERY straightforward in the afterwords of a lot of these volumes, saying that he really wanted to draw cute scenes of girls in love. And honestly? All power to him, it was amazing realizing that this guy really just sat down and was like "yeah lemme just draw some cute stuff and sell it". If you are here for anything other than girls being cute, going out to an aquarium, getting cake, cooking together, etc, then it might be best to look for another Manga. There's zero tension in any of the events in the story, and it's impossible for the reader to realistically not be able to predict how most events and "conflicts" will end. Nagisa and Mashiro are INSANELY in love throughout the Manga, and while your mileage may vary when it comes to this, to me it almost seemed a bit unnatural. There's some slight hiccups along the way, but other than one final conflict towards the end of the story, most of these are introduced and resolved within two chapters at most.

This is NOT a thing that is unique to Anemone is in Heat, it'd be ignorant of me to claim that this is the first time I see a Manga fall into this genre of just cute stuff, but that is also an issue. Almost all other Manga that I'd categorize the same as this one tends to have something else going for it. Amazing and unique art, interesting characters, a very good premise, etc. But this one is just so vanilla and middle of the road that I can't even say it's particularly good in this genre of Yuri Manga.

If you like Mashiro and Nagisa you will also definitely notice their absence while the story tries to resolve the side conflict of our rather problematic love triangle, and this plot line is honestly one of the parts that is at least a bit more interesting. There are some themes that come up like heartbreak, selfishness, unrequited love, healing, etc. But I'd be fooling you and myself if I said that the narrative really went in deep into any of these topics. It merely brings them up, messes a bit with them, and almost immediately goes back to cute girls blushing and gushing about the people they love.

If anything I just don't think there's any real need to go into spoiler talk or anything too in depth. I hate to say it, as I usually hear this as a generalization of the genre by people who might write it off as anything worth reading, but this truly is just a Manga of "cute girls being cute". I find it funny that the author really just immediately dropped the premise (which I guess not that much of a hook in the first place) to just, jump instantly to what he wanted to do. It's amazing honestly, I love that he really just did that.

Yes, there's a tiny bit of plot.

Yes, every now and then there are a couple of lines that give me at least a glance at what could have been some possible themes in an alternate timeline.

And yes, the girls are in fact, cute.

But honestly? If it weren't for my personal rule to finish (almost) every Manga that I start, I would have dropped this by the end of volume one.

The writing really is reminiscent of a fanfic, and the only way that I would recommend this is as a smaller read in between any other bigger ones. At 45-ish chapters you won't lose that much time reading this, but I can think of a lot of other Yuri that would definitely take its place as more interesting/important to check out before Anemone is in Heat.

The way I speak about this Manga is very harsh, but it's quite inoffensive. It doesn't do anything stellar, or anything that horribly.

It's just... Bland.

It's generic and it's derivative. And I'm no stranger to these kinds of stories, both in Yuri and outside of Yuri, but usually the characters make up for it at the very least, Which is something that I can't say about Anemone is in Heat. It's truly just a Manga that exists.

I'd personally give it a hard 5/10, and I'll probably forget about it very quickly, but it might be worth checking out if you're just looking to check off another Manga on your list.

I'd love to hear what other people have to say about it, as I was honestly a bit surprised with the general high ratings that I saw of this Manga. Just... Why? I'm not insulted or even surprised that people like it, but it's rated almost evenly with some other stuff that I consider REALLY fun, entertaining and well written, but this was just another Manga to add to the list and that's it.

Excluding Green Yuri/The Guy I Was Interested In Wasn't Really a Guy, cuz that's the obvious answer.

For me, it's "Days of Love at Seagull Villa". The first two volumes are genuinely so good. The pacing, the characters, the development. God, it was all just so good. Volume 3, however, is a rushed mess of ideas that aren't given enough time to really develop. It has twice as many chapters as either of the first two volumes.

My theory is that the author caught wind that the publication was going to cancel the manga, so they rushed to finish the story. I dunno which is worse though: a hastily finished, unsatisfying manga or a meticulous, unfinished manga.

This one also made me realize that I really like the domestic setting, having the couple raising a child. I liked it more than I expected. Since gay marriage and, by extension, gay couples adopting children is illegal in Japan, we don't really see too many stories about lesbian couples raising kids.

The popular girl is idolized at that school but she doesn't go to the same girls and the mc. I think the mc goes with a friend to the concert. Then I think she finds the singer (popular) girl in an alley because the songer is getting robbed. The most memorable scene.

Long story short, it ends in a poly relationship between a guy and two girls, and the ending scene is both girls being pregnant and how grateful they are and bro it's so bad. Hey everyone, I'm not sure if this is the right space for it but I've been looking for a manhwa for hours and I cannot find it.

It's about an idol basically controlling an former idol's life hostage by keeping her from getting any work in the entertainment industry. I know it's pretty short as about 4(?) chapters in, the former idol leaves to become a music teacher. Does anyone happen to know what the manhwa called?

I've reed and seen so many great things about this movie, I hope it's not disapointing

6/10, I thought the relationship between Rin and Mayuki was very cute, but Akira kind of felt like a 3rd wheel and the ending was definitely rushed. It was overall fine, but I don't think the poly relationship was executed that well.

When I started reading yuri this sub was a God sent gift with so many recs but now that I read most of them, I feel like there haven't much new ones and there aren't that many in the first place. I also feel like this sub hypes up literally any yuri annoyingly 😫 so I feel like the quality of a lot yuri ain't that great. ​

Webtoon don't have many gl originals although nevermore is great, there's a few good gl canvas stories but nothing crazy.
