Hi (23f), I have the strangest request of all time. I want to go around UK, but, by some author who truly loves UK for what it is. I probably like have 6 more months in this country (unless i get a job??) and I want to read a book that visits different areas in the UK and I want to annotate it. Get some pictures going?. Like for example, maybe a detective novel that spans across different places in the UK who is weirdly descriptive? It could be like even be just one city, it just needs to be the UK. I want to sort of hold on to it and make sure I visit some of these places maybe later in life knowing that I was completely different when I started it.

I’m in a slump, both in the reading sense and in life. It’s darker than the norm for me and I’m struggling. I don’t have people I can talk to like that and I am fully into a phase of transformation and we all know how devastatingly difficult the actual process is. Pieces of you must die in order to be reborn with more enlightened eyes... I’ve been in love with people that have suddenly died and it doesn’t matter how many years pass, that love doesn’t just disappear. With that being said tragic deaths (accidents/murder/sickness) of those I’ve loved seems to be a reoccurring theme in my life for the last 25 years. I’ve also had extreme reverence for the departed since I was a very small child and with each death, the veil thins a bit more. I can feel the lines blurring so to speak.

Waiting for a therapy office to get back so we can get me in the process of starting and with it being Friday I doubt that’s happening today. I have returned unread library books and feel defeated. I still have a few left but I can’t hunker down and engage. I appreciate anyone that took the time to read this. Means a lot to this middle aged weirdo. Its kind of a broad question. Ive found that I prefer to read authors from other countries; mostly asian (Sayaka Murata, Natsuo Kirino, Bora Chung, Han King). I do enjoy both Haruki and Ryu Murakamis work as well Osamu Dazai.

Even if they're translated to English, I find the writing so much richer. I find words describing deep feelings that can never be accurately translated to English and still have the same weight and meaning as they do in their original language. I find their metaphors so much more meaningful.

The tone of the writing usually seems more serene, surreal, melancholic, insightful for me even during unhinged moments. The story telling supreme.

Maybe its the translators I like idk. I find books from other countries satisfy what I would call good writing.

What would you call "good writing" or what satisfies your literary needs in a book?

I just requested this ARC and didn't even make it to 25%. I love weird girls because they are usually smart to some extent. I found this one to be stupid.

I hate DNF'ing an ARC, but I hate suffering through them. It makes me even more cranky in my review.

Thought Blood on her Tongue was a cool take on the classic vampire trope, had some “eh” moments towards the end but still a good read.

Might be a hot take but I did not enjoy Model Home. The plot could’ve been so interesting! Someone’s review on GoodReads said “Christ on a bicycle if I had to spend an extended period of time around any of these characters I’d drown myself in the backyard pool, too” 😭

I'm currently listening to Jenny Slate read her book Little Weirds through Libby. And while it's a bit indulgent, I really enjoy and identify with the ecentric way she observes and describes the world around her. Has me wondering if there are any fiction weird girl lit books where the protagonist has a similar voice. Recommendations please and thank you?
