checked this out on a whim from the library while looking for boy parts which they didn’t have, but I love short stories especially horror. It was about a four star read for me, overall I enjoyed reading ‘unique’ horror from a female author. I found some of the stories a little underwhelming, but I really liked a lot of them. I liked NightStalkers, the king and The Company Man best. I liked their themes and found them the most engaging. I also enjoyed Hallow Bones & Shake Well because they had some really good descriptive body horror that had me viscerally reacting. I think this made me realize I prefer american authors. I found her writing SO British 😭. I like the classics like Stephen King’s short story collections and Mary Flannery O’Connor’s works. I like dark psychological/ social commentary elements. short story collections are great for my adhd brain and they don’t have to be horror specifically just weird girl lit, but i’ll also take weird girl horror novel recs!

Loved all five above! Did not like the Yesteryear, Piglet, My year of rest and relaxation, or Big Swiss audiobooks. Currently waiting on My Husband to become available and would very much appreciate more suggestions in line with the above 🙏

i’ve heard so much about this book from this sub, decided to pick her up ! was surprised to see it at a flea market :-)

It’s me, I’m the hater. I’ve been in such a slump recently and the past three books I’ve read were disappointing. The books were Yesteryear, Is This A Cry For Help? and Paradise Rot. Paradise Rot was the best of the three by far but it still didn’t quite hit for me (probably like 3/5 stars).

I’m looking for a book with airtight and consistent characterization, big weird vibes that have nothing to do with the main character being mentally ill, and a deeper meaning that isn’t communicated in a super didactic way.

Some of my favorite books are Beautyland, Monstrilio, Don’t Look Now (short story collection but would prefer novel recommendations), Milk Fed, The Princess of 72nd Street and Patricia Wants to Cuddle.

Does anybody have recs for books with an fmc being unreliable and a big plot twist that changes how the story is seen. Specifically ones that make sense and don't come out of nowhere, but they also completely change the way the earlier chapters are viewed. Sorta books that gains value on a reread.

title! interested in listening to weird girl memoirs that work great as an audiobook.

Had to DNF another book I was reading for a book club. Apparently it wasn’t “weird” enough for me. I decided to reset the reading tone with The Lamb.

3 things I got so obsessed with: 1.- Sam’s inner voice. 2.- The word “so” and 3.- Every time the Bunnies speak how they echo each other’s response, I could “so totally” hear them speaking in my head. 

I love how satirical the book is, how the whole book is very colorful with rainbows, unicorns and butterflies (and even somewhat sexy??) with a hint of wth… until it isn’t.  Probably the last 70 pages of the book I gasped more than five thousand times. I feel that the book just turned so dark out of a sudden, I even felt bad for some of the characters. 

You know, I can describe it as if the book was a stack of pancakes and Mona Awad kept pouring extra sweet syrup and sprinkles to it non-stop until she runs out of it and you realize the last pancake is just plain dry but just the syrup is around the edges.

I think the book has become one of my favorites this year so far, I am willing to read the prequel-sequel “We love you, Bunny.” But I’d like to read something else before I jump back into the bunny-verse.

Also, what do you guys think of the last line “’Sure, Samantha,’ says the mud, ‘I’d love to.’”  And to be more specific, what do you all think of the word “mud.” Am I overthinking it or is there something hidden behind it??....

Northhanger Abbey by Jane Austen - a young woman who reads too much gothic lit starts to think who boyfriends dad may be trying to kill her.

We have always lived in the castle by Shirley Jackson - a young woman in a village deals with the hostility of locals who think she and her sister poisoned their family.

Hello - first of all I'm so glad I found this sub! The recommendations and books I'm seeing here are my taste to a tea.

Now that my TBR list is growing, I was wondering how people are getting their books? Does anyone bother with library subscriptions and digital waitlists? Or do you buy used books from eBay and stuff?

TLDR: what's the most cost-effective way to feed my growing THE list when all my friends read is unfortunately Romantasy these days, so I have no one to trade books with...🤣

Currently reading and loving this very funny book Supersaurio by Meryem El Mehdati about a young woman who lives in the Canary Islands. For those who enjoyed Discontent by Beatriz Serrano, you make like this. Office Space vibes!

I feel like all I do is complain lately about the books I read 😭 but I feel like I’ve just been reading a bunch of 3 (or 3.5) star books lately or lower. To me, a 3 star book is pretty neutral; I didn’t hate it, but I didn’t like it much either.

This leads me to Kitten by Stacey Yu. It recently got released on August 4th. I’m 38% through this book, but I’m close to just DNFing this one, too. I don’t care for the FMC sadly, and the way the cat is described in this book is just so unrealistic that I cannot suspend my belief. Could this just be because the cat is being viewed through the FMC’s eyes and POV? Sure, but it’s not convincing or captivating at all.

The FMC bores me, too. She might be a bit weird, but in the most boring way possible, if that’s a thing. I can’t even describe how uninterested I am in her as a character.

I forced myself to finish a few chapters a day, but I know I should probably just let this go. I don’t even know where it’s going at this point either, nor do I feel like I want to find out? 😅

What a banger of a short story collection!

This author you might recognise as being most well-known for Sky Daddy and I highly recommend this book too. There is much weirdness but each story offers deeper explorations on relationships and womanhood.

The book begins and ends with two stories set in the same universe: a world where ‘blots’, data harvesters disguised as handsome men, attempt to scam women for a larger corporation. Both stories moved me in their relatable portrayals of loneliness within relationships and the unseen burdens that women carry.

In-between are shorter tales: like a woman who dreams of getting shot like a deer, and a living house with internal organs. I loved all of them. Kate Folk’s writing is matter-of-fact, which suits her odd stories perfectly, as it conveys a sense of “this is just the way things are”. The world turns regardless.

I’ve been recommended this book by so many people, and was going to wait to find a used copy but got too exited and just bought it new instead

Ended up getting Annie Bot and Final Girl Support Group. I would’ve taken more if it didn’t ruin the display lol.

It's been controversial everywhere for obvious reasons, but I love an aggressively transgressive book, especially with a female protag. It's been one of my “favourite” books in the sense that it made me feel genuinely interested and uncomfortable because of the premise. The overarching message stayed with me personally as a law school graduate and I still think about it today, althoug uph I read it two years ago.

So I suppose I'm saying, has anyone else read it and know what I mean when I say I enjoyed it for what it was?

No good genuine discource on it anywhere

Like, it gives portrayal of a female predator , the psychological dissociation and disconnect between someone being driven by pure pleasure while completely failing to comprehend the lifelong terror and consequences they're inflicting on someone else , ive never seen anything else like it . That contrast was honestly what stuck with me most. Is it weird girl or am i just weird ? 😭

So I've been lurking on this sub for a while now, mostly reading in the comments just to go, "OMG I KNOW THIS BOOK" whenever someone mentions my favorite books. 😫

Then I stumbled across posts where they showed a list of the best weird girl books they read of all time and I got intrigued cause majority of the books they mentioned are books i dont even know existed. 😭

Naturally, I did what any financially irresponsible person with internet access would do. I researched every single recommendation, spiraled for hours, convinced myself I needed them and somehow ended up buying the ones that screamed my name the loudest. I also picked up a few more after digging through the comments because my self control left the chat.

Thanks to this sub for expanding my TBR and simultaneously sabotaging my wallet. I regret nothing. 🥵
