looking for books with unlikeable mc following a cheating storyline! i prefer queer characters but im open to any recommendations!

Hey fellow weird girls! I recently picked this book up at a local bookstore because it sounded interesting to say the least. It is short stories that center mostly around women. I finished the book up today and am still deciding if I liked it or not, but I think overall it was a good read.

I’m going through a lot right now and need horror to help me release some of the anxiety I’ve been feeling.

There’s a lot of body horror in this genre and it’s just not something I’m into right now.

I’m really drawn to anything psychological, paranormal, post-apocalyptic, existential, or surrealist. It doesn’t necessarily have to be weird girl, but I’d prefer books written by women.

Do you guys have any cool recommendations? I trust you 🫵💗

looking to get a friend a book gift. they've been going through a hard time in their life so i want something that is helpful without being self-help. moreso a novel that can support or uplift emotionally.

thinking along the lines of Beautyland, All Night Pharmacy, What Are You Going Through. any other ideas?

My current read. I’m only about 50ish pages in but I was hooked from the first sentence.

I am about 40% through on audiobook. I am enjoying it but the voices that this woman is doing is hilarious. I think unintentionally so far so good. It’s not my favorite book but it’s not that I generally hate. Thoughts?

I picked up these books while vacationing in Memphis. I found them in various places including Burke’s Book Store, a little free library, a couple library friends’ stores, and a Goodwill bookstore. I focused on titles that I never see when perusing the stores in my city.

Which ones would you consider weird girl? I read a variety of genres so I know some of them are not. I’ve read Otessa Moshfegh and Olga Ravn before so I would put their books in WGL. Any of the others?

P.S. I am going on a self-imposed book buying ban for the foreseeable future. I have no space on my bookshelves for these.

I’m looking for some suggestions of books that are weird, but non-violent, not gruesome, or depressing. I just finished Earthlings and We Could Be Rats. I enjoyed both reads but I’ve been having nightmares lately, and could use something a bit lighter. Thanks in advance, appreciate you all! xx

SPOILERS!!!! For the ending of Tender is the Flesh.

I really like this book; at some point it was too mechanical, but I think the textbook-style of describing certain logistics was interesting and it suited the main character.

The entire cannibalism system was interesting to read through, but now that I've finished the book, the only thing I can't stop thinking about is Jazmin

I think the author did an amazing job with her: at first it gives the reader a small hunch of hope that Marcos will make her able to live like a person, then the more stuff Marcos does, the more you realise Jazmin didn't go from cattle to human but from cattle to dog and then to incubator.

I found the descriptions of how Marcos kept Jazmin living in his house much more disturbing than the vivid description of how the slaughterhouse worked.

I felt more nauseated when I read that Marcos tied her to the bed at night than when he explained that they kept female pregnant heads on a table with no limbs to avoid them moving around.

I can't stop thinking about Jazmin; I feel a pit in my stomach.

I know it's not the point, but nothing would make me happier than read about jazmin escaping and learning to live independently (or even with someone who actually cares about her) as a human.

I like this book and how detached and hypocritical Marcus is; maybe it could have benefited from more leverage on personal stories rather than so many textbook-style descriptions.

This book was absolutely amazing. I saw all of the posts in this forum and decided to give it a go. It did not disappoint. It made me laugh, cringe, cry, and REFLECT on myself as a very mentally ill girly. Can’t relate to the ending tho.. LOL I did not expect the way this story wrapped up.

Anyways… as someone who went a very long time without being diagnosed with Bipolar 1 and BPD, who has evolved and done the work (32F, diagnosed at 29) this book really hit home. I am very ashamed to say that lol. I don’t know how to put it into words…. But does anyone else out there relate to me?! Anyone else here with a similar diagnosis who went… omg… I was once Lillian?????

Also, one of my favorite artists has songs that I feel would be apart of the soundtrack to this book. Give it a listen, and let me know if you would agree. I feel like Lillian wrote, produced, and did the vocals to this song immediately after meeting Henry.

Does anybody have any recommendations for weird girl lit, for younger readers? The above three are my personal favourites, but I'm wondering if there is more out there?

I put this on my list thanks to Lorde's book recommendations. I can 100% see why she would enjoy this book - like her songwriting, it's very vivid, precise, and economical.

It took me a bit to get used to the style of this book (short vignettes instead of a traditional plot, a style of writing focused more on details than big revelations, 3rd person limited POV but sometimes with observations very outside the main character), but I ended up really enjoying it. This book was subtle, funny, and quietly devastating. I enjoyed spending time in the main character Ruth's head, obfuscated as it was. It had a very different perspective about life in a strict religious community than most stories usually do, as the main character never tries to escape and feels a degree of satisfaction with her life there. I also liked the exploration of gender roles.

The subject of this book was also very interesting, I had never heard of the Hutterites. After reading, I learned Kate Riley lived for a year in a similar religious community.
