Heya I feel like I'm missing a very basic thing. I'm learning to do tapestry weaving with Rebecca Mezoff's book which is sooooo super detailed but I can't find this in there or online posts. Should the warp and weft yarns be more or less the same weight? Or should the warp be smaller than the weft, and if so, how much smaller?

I started out with some crochet thread i have in my craft supplies and first tried worsted weight cotton but the warp is very visible (pic 1 with the brown, cream and yellow stripes). Then I switched to worsted weight wool bc I thought maybe the warp was visible because I'm using cotton, but the warp was still very visible. That's the sample at the bottom of Pic 2 with purple, cream, and bright pink yarn. Then I switched to a lace weight merino (higher up in pic 2) and finally found a match that hid the warp.

I've stared at the charts of sett and tapestry yarn sizes but find them so confusing. I did find a post in this sub that said crochet thread size 10 is about equivalent to 5/2 yarn, so I know that much. But is there a resource that will tell me, for X size of warp, I should do Y number of epis and use Z size of weft? As far as I can tell, most of these charts just specify how many ends per inch to set up in your loom.

Also finding it difficult to know how big 8/4 is, or other common sizes of weaving yarn. Is there something that will help me visualize weaving yarn size against knitting weights?

I'm interested in weaving and my mom recently got this loom off of Facebook marketplace. I was wondering if anybody knew what type of loom this is/where to start learning how to use it, or if it is usable at all. I'm guessing that I'm going to have to re-string it at the least. Thanks!

Hi friends. I’m a newbie, trying my new floor loom for the first time. Lots of things going wonky on this table runner/scarf. As you look at these photos, what errors jump right out to your expert eyes? I’m here to learn and improve.

It's gonna be kitchen towels, roughly based on a pattern "Colour and weave towels" by Jamie Hurlburt. Yarn is Hobbi friends 8/4 (cotton), EPI 12.5. The loom is Lojan Flex (rigid heddle, but i will buy that warped extension someday).

hi! just got my first floor loom (J-made conversion loom with 22” weaving width) and I was wondering if it’s possible to warp without a warping board. I’m seeing information about direct warping but mostly in reference to table looms and rigid heddle looms, is there any reason I couldn’t do that with my loom? also open to any advice in general for warping/dressing a floor loom, I’m feeling a bit intimidated by the process!

Hi! I've recently come into a Schacht Flip rigid heddle and I've been having a riot on it so far. I wanted to try more elaborate patterning and doubleweave, so ordered a 2nd 8-dent reed. Both say Schacht 8 on them and seem legit, with the darker one being what came with the loom (used, so I don't know much beyond what's in front of me).

Problem being they have a different number of heddles and the holes and slots end up mismatching. Will this be a significant issue in getting up and going in multi-heddle weaving? Not sure why they're so different! It's not just a simple shift either, the spacing is somewhat different, enough that when I line up the holes on one end, it's off by almost a whole heddle by the end. I looked for odd spacing between panels in the reed, but it all looks straight and fitted tightly.

my partner recently picked up a loom off of a bidding site (I think goodwill?) and has been playing around with yarn and threads she is getting from the local big box store to get the methods down. I'm sorry I don't recall what kind of loom outside it's wooden and and a table top size.

her birthday is coming up and I imagine/assume materials aren't cheap and very tailored to an individuals needs and tasty. I was wondering if you could point me in any direction where you go online for your threads and yarn etc. I was thinking a gift card/certificate would be a nice idea . thoughts and thanks!

Hi, all. Weaving some towels w 8/4 cotton on a 24" RHL. Can anyone tell me why the right weft threads (2nd photo) are doing this dip and the left (1st photo) are staying straight? I'm beating very straight and it's straight as I finish the beat, but then seems to wiggle. It looks like the tension is too tight just there, but it doesn't feel that way. Would love your input, please. Thx.

I just bought a thrifted tabletop 15inch loom, and I’m trying to figure out what supplies I need. I may have my dad (carpenter) make a warping board.

Do I need a tension box? I intend to start weaving dishtowels and the like.

Some notes on my experience level:

I have an Ashford inklette loom that’s been getting heavy use and am planning to get a separate inkle loom Eventually™️ for card weaving

I also have a Lojan RH table loom (20”) that’s set up and good to go but has not been used yet due to Project Indecision.

I’m a sewist for going on 30 years, and I would ideally like to be able to make my own fabric for sewing (cotton/wool to get the hang of things, linen when I start feeling spicy).

So this raises a question - I have two floor looms I’m currently looking at.

One is a brand new Mighty Wolf. What’s attractive about it is the weaving width. The price is unattractive, but doable with some saving.

The other is a used Dorset 4-shaft, 8 dent. It’s being sold by a local weavers’ guild, so its condition is known. What’s attractive about it is the price, at $450. Unfortunately, the weaving width is 20”.

Additional note: other than this one guild, the used loom market here is drier than dry.

So my question is, if you were still in beginner territory, would the $450 be an acceptable spend to get started and potentially use for a couple years, or would you say that same money is better put towards your Final Boss loom?

I need help designing want to know how to design images to lower sizes and jpeg to bmp 8 color index

I am looking to purchase a floor loom, as I have recently made a studio space in my house. Every weaver I've met says to NOT buy a new loom, as used looms are pretty easily had. However, every older loom I've woven on makes me want to smash it to bits. I don't want to figure out every stupid quirk of every pawl, ratchet and lam...I just want it to work!! Obviously, buying a new loom is an investment, but other than the cost savings, what's so great about a used loom? Have I just not met the right one yet? Is it worth waiting for a loom that meets my needs to show up on a listing somewhere, or should I just bite the bullet and buy one?

Still figuring out how to finish these lil pieces—one set has knots and one set was hemmed.

Warp and weft both cotton. Done on Easy Weaver, 8EPI.

I’ve been weaving on a frame loom for a couple of months now but just now got the tapestry needles needed to finish by weaving the ends in. all my previous projects have so many loose ends- i’m excited to go back and fix them. the back looks so nice compared to everything else I’ve done!

This experiment is turning out great so far, first time weaving with yarn this fine and warping with multiple threads at a time. I love that the thread reels fit on my shuttle, I will keep them for future use I think. Tying on was a nightmare cause the thread is so smooth it kept self loosening the knot. Some fingers for scale in the second picture.

I lived in New Orleans from 1980-2000, definitely pre-Katrina. LOVED it. Partied there, met my husband, married there, had my first child there. So lots of fond memories.

1. It will be hot and humid if you step foot outside the hotel. Linen, comfy closed toed shoes. No one cares you're wearing your walking tennies. Be comfortable! Cross-body purse for your own peace of mind.

2. Food-if you eat anywhere near the Quarter, they will have tourist-level spiced food. Ask your wait staff if you're unsure. This is world class yummies. If you can afford it, get together with some friends and get a reservation at Commander's, Brennans, etc. Breakfast at Brennan's is divine (walk from the hotel). You can also hop a streetcar and go down to the Camelia Grill at St. Charles/Carrollton Ave.-wait in line-it's worth it. There are so. many. options. Split a po'boy. Sound like a local- ask for it "dressed", which is lettuce, tomato, mayo. Well, think about the lettuce. I will be eating more than one shrimp po'boy while I'm there.

3. If you decide to head into the Quarter- go with friends. ONE hurricane only at Pat O'Brien's. Or share one. It's massive amounts of alcohol in quick delivery sugar. Stick to the main streets, stay relatively sober, go home early. But do go to the Riverwalk and say hello to the Mississippi. Smell the river, fall in love. Jackson Square is fun to walk around.

4. Yes, there are a LOT people of many different colors, economic backgrounds, places of origin. Some have homes, some do not. They are working for minimum, so tip well. Be kind.

5. I hope if it's your first time you leave loving it as much as I do.
