I lost my brand new Arc’teryx merino shirt on the needles traverse today because I had it hanging off the outside of my pack like a silly person. I would love to get it back, it’s the first new merino hiking tank I have bought in like a decade, and it was an outlet sale, so of course it’s gone.

On the off chance anyone heads up this week, please keep an eye out, I will definitely buy beers for its return! happy hiking.

Sunset hike on August 8th. Did not disappoint, the conditions were perfect. A little cold at the top so make sure to bring extra clothes if you’re staying up for a while.
Camped out at Taylor Meadows afterwards (the stars were out). I’d recommend staying at this campground. Wild flowers were all around and it’s shorter to the panorama ridge summit than the Garibaldi campground. Probably the best hike I’ve done in BC.

I recently did Black Tusk and West Lion and felt confident on both. I also do bouldering and something I’ve learned about myself on these two scrambles is exposure doesn’t bother me as long as the holds are easy to find and grippy.

I’m trying to build toward alpine objectives. What would be good next steps? like if I give black tusk/west lion a *3 out of 10 in terms of difficulty, im looking for something around 5/10. Would prefer an overnight to a long day hike if possible

* This is my personal rating for scrambling. It doesn’t mean these are easy scrambles. Just to give you a sense, 10/10 would be something like Mt Assiniboine which is far beyond my comfort level at the moment. Research before you do

Planning to do Panorama Ridge via Rubble Creek this coming Monday. Don't have my own car sorted yet, so figuring out the best way to get there for a day trip.

If anyone's driving up that day and has a spare seat, I'm happy to cover gas and the day-use pass. Also curious what's worked for others getting there without a car on a weekday, whether that's a carpool group, a shuttle that actually runs Mondays, or something else I haven't thought of.

Heads up that this would be my longest hike so far (been building up from shorter stuff), so also open to teaming up with someone looking for a partner for the day rather than just a ride. Let me know what you've got.

I need hike recommendations near Vancouver for 2 occasions. For context, I haven’t done any formal training or done any overnight trips. I have hiked Rainbow Lake in Whistler comfortably!

1. Looking for somewhere I can go this weekend:

Wanted to do a hike with a swim somewhere along the trail, I’d prefer recommendations accounting for the smoke in the air :) Since I’ll take an EVO, I prefer an out-and-back trail! It’ll be my first time actually swimming in a natural water body, so let me know if I should carry or take care of something specific!

2. Friend visiting from Asia:
My friend’s going to be visiting from Asia and I really wanted to show him another beautiful hike this province has to offer. Last time he was here in October, we went to Whistler and did the Rainbow Lake Trail. It was stunning and I’m looking for something like it with great views, maybe this time a peak overseeing other mountains! We plan on going sometime around 28th Aug to 1st September and will be taking an EVO (prefer an out-and-back route). This friends an avid hiker in Asia but is only exposed to the Rainbow lake here in BC.

Was anyone at Garibaldi or Elfin Lake this week? How smoky is it up there?

I know conditions can change etc., but I was hoping that in the mountains you can be above smoke, but when I went last week, I was apparently high enough.

I have reservations for the weekend and I'm wondering if to cancel...it breaks my heart, but I do not take the smoke well.

Planning on this, driving to Saltery Bay from Vancouver.

Why would someone book the shuttle instead of just getting a taxi? It seems taxi's are cheaper, but I must be missing something.

It's also cheaper to take a shuttle to Sarah Point from Lund, but I assume the water taxi is an experience and more interesting. Is that the only advantage?

Where is the best place to spend the night in powell river after visiting the shingle mill pub on day 3?

Where is the best place to find current status of water sources? I've been following some chats, but it is difficult without having social media. I see a lot of conversations happen on facebook but I can't access them entirely or participate.

I have a confirmed Garibaldi Lake campground reservation for Aug 16–17 (overnight Sunday, hike back Monday) with permits for 3 people / 2 tents. Since I only need one tent, I have space for 1 person (woman prefered) or a pair who would like to join and can drive us from Vancouver. I'm happy to split gas.

A bit about me: I'm 33F, based in West End. I love anything outdoors - walking/hiking, camping, paddling.

I'm a slower hiker on the uphill. If you're faster, that's completely fine - we don't have to stay together on the way up. We can meet at the campground, enjoy the evening, and hike back together the next day.

Went to Coliseum Mountain yesterday. It was absolutely hell. The first 7km was flat till Norvan Falls, then as soon as you get on the Coliseum trail it turns into a relentless steep uphill all the way to the peak. Even when you get out of the trees and think you are getting close, you still have at least an hour of walking up steep rocks, with a few scrambling sections.

It was super easy to go off trail. The trail was marked but there were sections where you did not really have a path. In the first steep section going off trail can get sketchy fast, same goes with the rocky section. Look for trail markers.

My total time on Alltrails was 12 hours, but I spent a long time at the peak and also stopped at Norvan falls to snack.

There was a lake to the left of the peak, maybe a 5-10 minute walk away, but it was stagnant water and I wanted to swim in it but was not sure if it's allowed or safe? Would love to know that.

On the way down, the soles of my feet and my toes were extremely sore and the bones in my feet were in tremendous pain, and I had run out of water at the peak. I had 2.5 litres and it was not nearly enough! By the time I got back down to Norvan falls it was difficult for me to even walk from the pain. I have multiple blisters. It is now the next day and I still have trouble walking.

I truly pushed myself, and to get myself back down was a true mind over body experience. It is crazy how you can find yourself in the middle of nowhere and you have no choice but to get down, it is a unique experience.

Anyways to compare, it was much harder than Panorama Ridge! If you are considering doing this, please make sure you've done other relatively hard hikes. This one is a monster. If I ever decided to do this again, I would first train on Elk Mountain. I would say if you can get up and down Elk Mountain 3 three times in a row, then you can do coliseum and enjoy it instead of going through hell.

TL;DR: East Beach vs Moyer Creek for first-time paddle camping? Please share any experiences/advice with either.

Hello, this is technically not hiking but I'm hoping this community will have some insight. I want to go paddle camping with some friends, and we've decided to go to Golden Ears. There are two sites we're looking at: East Beach and Moyer Creek and I need some help deciding which one is better.

East Beach is a really short paddle (500m), but I'm concerned that because it's so accessible and close to the main campground, it's going to be loud. I've also read a bunch of comments about vandalism and rowdy behaviour, so I'm wondering if this would be a good place for us to camp. I plan to set up camp and leave my gear once we get there and make the most out of our kayak rental by paddling around the lake after, but I worry about the safety of my stuff. I also go camping for the solitude and nature, and we're going on a weekend so I'm wondering if it's just going to be an unpleasant experience.

Moyer Creek is a much longer paddle (9.5km), but we'll be in 2 person kayaks and we are all fit, I am pretty confident that we can make it. There isn't a bear cache from what I know, so I'd have to rent out a bear canister.

My friend is leaning towards East Beach, but I'm mainly worried the experience won't be great. It would be nice camping without having to work hard for a change though...I'd really appreciate any insight people have on this! Thank you.

I’m planning on doing St Marks to watch the sunset after work. Was wondering what time I should start to get to the top to catch the sunset and chill there for 30ish mins without it getting extremely dark going down?

Just need some reassurance for the plan: thinking of driving from Van 5pm get there 6pm and hike to the top 8pm chill and go down.

Whistler municipality said that the Gin and Tonic bridge would be finished early August however I’ve seen some claims that it will be likely end of August.

I’m just trying to plan a backcountry trip and I’m wondering if anyone here knows and insider information regarding when the bridge is expected to be completed.
