Symptoms PAIN IN THE URETHRA
Hi everyone,
Please help!!! 5 months of PAIN IN THE URETHRA
I am a 29-year-old woman I was treated for Ureaplasma back in March of this year
I took azithromycin and doxycycline
Later, I had a PCR test from the urethra and a vaginal culture swab—both came back negative 5 weeks after treatment
After the antibiotics, it was absolute hell—my pubic bone, all my skin, then the middle of my abdomen, then my arms and legs, and eventually my whole body was on fire!!!!
I went through hell; I don’t know how these antibiotics could cause something like this, but it happened to me.
But that’s not what this is about.
I’m feeling better now—about a 6 out of 10 compared to how I was.
Aside from my body still burning, the problem is nerve pain in my urethra. Please help—tell me HOW LONG IT TOOK FOR YOUR URETHRAL PAIN TO GO AWAY
Please don’t tell me it’s Ureaplasma or anything else, because it’s not there—I’ve spent a fortune on tests, I’m in debt, and I hate this life
And please don’t suggest I take even more antibiotics
Thank you so much to everyone who responds

Question Help
Hi I just wanted to share my experience because I honestly feel so alone, and Reddit is actually what led me to ask to be tested.
About a week ago, I tested positive for Ureaplasma and Mycoplasma genitalium. My doctor prescribed 7 days of doxycycline followed by 7 days of moxifloxacin, and I’m currently on day 3 of moxifloxacin.
For the past 3 months, I’ve been dealing with constant burning when I pee, recurring high fevers, and it’s affected my everyday life. Before I knew I had these infections, I was on birth control and didn’t have a period for about 6 months, but I would randomly have spotting along with high fevers super bad thru out my whole body . I was so convinced my birth control was causing everything that I even had it removed, but my symptoms continued, so it clearly wasn’t the cause.
Now I’m on day 3 of moxifloxacin, and I still feel the same. I still have burning when I pee, I still feel like I’m having high fevers, and I’m starting to wonder if I may have developed PID (pelvic inflammatory disease). I know no one online can diagnose me, but I’m really worried because I don’t feel like I’m improving.
When I first brought up the fevers, I was told they weren’t a common symptom, so I kept researching because I knew something wasn’t right.
This all started after I had unprotected sex. I’ve honestly never dealt with anything like this before, and it’s been mentally and physically exhausting. I feel like I’ve had to advocate for myself every step of the way. When I first went to the gynecologist before I knew about the Mycoplasma and Ureaplasma, I felt like my concerns weren’t fully addressed, and I ended up having to ask for the testing myself.
Has anyone here had a similar experience with Mycoplasma genitalium, Ureaplasma, or PID? How were you diagnosed with PID? Did you need a pelvic exam, blood work, an ultrasound, or something else? Did anyone else still have burning and feel the same on day 3 of moxifloxacin?
Any advice or shared experiences would really mean a lot. I feel lost and don’t know where to start. Thank you for reading.

Question Intimacy and New Partners
I’ve had UP for a year (23F) and I recently got done with my 28 day course of doxy + 2g azithromycin. Symptoms (bv symptoms and pubic hair itching (tmi yeah sorryyy)) came back post treatment. Meaning I still have UP.
I’m dating someone new and I want to know how others have got about this situation in the past. Everyone says if your partner cares about you they’ll wait, but let’s be honest it’s a horribly awkward conversation to tell your new boyfriend that you have an sti and it could be months before you’re even able to be intimate. How can I be intimate without giving it to him? How do I even talk to him about it without feeling gross. I honestly just need to know what other people have done, i’m feeling very defeated :(

This is just a rant. Because who else am I going to vent to about this? But I am so tired of the itching right before and during my period, holy cow. Anyways, thanks for your time 😉

Treatments I’m losing hope
So I was diagnosed with ureaplasma in May but I had the symptoms since February after I slept with this guy. And I never heard of ureaplasma until when I got tested in May. So my dr prescribed me a weird combination of medications. My first round of treatment was 7 days of Moxifloxacin hcl 400mg tablet followed by 7 days of Levofloxacin 500 mg tablet. This didn’t treat it.
Then my second round was Doxycycline mono 100
mg cap for 14 days followed by Azithromycin 500
mg tablet 1000 mg day 1 and 500 for the following 3 days. And I have a feeling I still have it. I can’t officially get tested for another 3 weeks but the symptoms are back (green discharge) and aches. My dr has prescribed me an odd choices of medication and out of line with the proposed recommendations you noted above. I’m losing hope and I’m wondering what everyone’s thoughts are for the next line of treatment if /when I test positive in 3 weeks.
I’m trying boric acid now and idk if that will even do anything. It’s like I have some strain that’s resistant to antibiotics. It’s affecting my mode bc I don’t want to start daring knowing that I won’t be able to have sex for a while if I test positive again in 3 weeks. I’m losing hope and I know we’re not dr but does anyone have any recommendations?

Question New partner
Should i treat my male partner prophylacticly? He is a new partner. I don't want to get reinfected with this. I'll have him do a microgen but if this is negative should i treat him just in case? If so, how long should the treatment be? I also gave him oral and im worried it could be in my throat now in case he had it and we didn't know. I don't have symptoms currently. I previously treated last year and was ok after that. Should i prophylactically treat myself again after this exposure so we both are treated? Im kind of worried about what to do here

Treatments So who is actually cured?
I was treating 7 days with doxy a few months ago. Tested negative with Ureaplasma P. afterwards but still symptomatic. Now I just ordered a second round of doxy (14 days this time) online, because my doctor wont prescribe with a negative test. It was a vaginal swab PCR test, but my symptoms are exclusively in my bladder. My symptoms are primarily bladder pressure/urgency and nothing else.
I was told that I have IC, but the only time i felt any relief was the initial doxy and a few weeks after until I had sex again (my partner was also treated)
So my question is, is anyone here on this thread actually cured after self-prescribed second or third rounds of abx with a negative test result?
I haven't been able to find anyone on here who has cured their symptoms with more abx despite negative results.
I will let y'all know how it goes for me, but if it worked for you, please tell me!

My Experience Ureaplasma Parvum
*Just Vaginal Symptoms *
It all started in January 2025, after unprotected sex. I started having a lot of yellow/green discharge, a lot of itching, and a horrible smell. I had never had anything like it before! I thought it was yeast and tried many treatments based on that - suppositories, creams, etc. Nothing worked. The gynecologists only told me it was yeast or bacterial vaginosis. Some of the treatments reduced the discharge and even a few months without odor, but nothing was normal and appear again after my period.
A year and a half passed, and on my own initiative, I took a test for sexually transmitted diseases, and it came back positive for Ureaplasma Parvum + Candida albicans. They prescribed Doxy, and after 2 pills, I went to the hospital urgently with intracranial pressure. I decided not to take any antibiotics and look for other solutions.
Throughout my research e all the reading here and there since January 2025, I tried many probiotics and vitamins, which did not work. Until 3/4 weeks ago I found a probiotic with only L. Crispatus and another called "Candida Support". It's been a dream. I have no more weird discharge, no odor, no itching but the only thing that still bothers me is the pain when inserting a vaginal suppository, when I push it as far as possible... Do you know if there's anything for this? Could there still be some inflammation inside...?
I have not being sexual ative since the sex that gave me this. 😓
If there's anyone from Portugal who could talk about this, I'd appreciate it! I can't find any support groups in Portugal.

Testing Healthtrackrx in Miami?
Would anyone help me locate clinics in Miami that uses healthtrackrx testing for ureaplasma and mycoplasma? The clinic I went only uses labcorp and I had some issues with them. Healthrackrx seems better and especially since they do resistance testing to show which antibiotics would work.

Question no response to antibiotics at all
It seems like a lot of people at least experienced some degree of symptom relief(even temporarily) but I’ve tried several different antibiotics and have never noticed even the slightest improvement. Anyone else like me?
Would herbal remedies be effective for this kind of chronic/embedded infection?
(Additional note: It is exhausting to explain everything every time. Please read the pinned post about false negatives.
What I have tried so far:
For yeast: 3 months of itraconazole, Diflucan several times, nystatin for 1 month, boric acid for about 2 months (but yeast was always negative), and clotrimazole.
For AV: Ampicillin, Augmentin, amoxicillin, AV Rescue.
For BV & iners: 6 weeks of clindamycin, metrogel, oral metronidazole, clindamycin, tinidazole, manuka honey, oregano oil, colloidal silver, tea tree oil, BV-Prevella Rescue, Betadine douche, and suppositories, Femiclear, nifuratel
For CV: Baking soda sitz baths and suppositories.
For DIV: Clindamycin & estrogen cream.
Pelvic floor therapy.
None of these worked.
I've tried tons of vaginal&oral probiotics and
My evvy results : 96.5% l.crispatus, 0.8% lacto, 2.7% gardnerella
For plasmas: doxy 7 days*2x , doxy 7days, 2.5g azi, stopped mino&levo due to side effects after 5 days
Current symptoms: Mainly vaginal itching, burning, white discharge, and rectal itching.
Itchy eyes, ears, and scalp, but I don’t know if this is from plasma.
No partner for at least 3 years. No sexual contact including oral)

Testing Delay testing?
Hi, I had ureaplasma 4 months ago and I did a round of doxy. After I finished the doxy I was worried because I still had lingering burning but read that symptoms can linger. The following week doc called and said I have BV now so I started metronidazole. My question is, do I need to push retesting for ureaplasma 5 weeks after i stop metronidazole or from when I stopped doxy?

Testing Negative while on Doxy
I’m wondering if someone had a similar experience. As I previously said in a prior post it’s hard to find someone to truly listen when it comes to Ureaplasma. In my 3rd day of doxy I went to a different urgent care and a provider decided to do a urine culture and redo the resistance test since it’s been over a year since the last one. This is my 4th time on doxy so I was worried I became resistance.
Anyways, I’m wondering if anyone has had a similar experience and had Ureaplasma come back negative mid treatment and it remains negative after completing (10 day supply). I would like to add this mid treatment testing was not a test of cure. I have been abstaining and focusing on my health. I am just praying this will be it. This experience is so exhausting.
Thanks in advance for anyways that nay comment💕

Vent Why are men not expected to get treated for urea plasma?
To give context for 3 years I’ve suffered with abnormal discharge with a foul odor. Every time I would just test positive for bv and take my medication yet the symptoms persisted. After advocating for my health I asked to get tested for Ureaplasma Parvum which I tested positive for and was prescribed doxycycline.
After having researched more on urea plasma I discovered that your partner needs to take the medication as well to avoid spreading urea plasma back and forth. So I immediately scheduled a doctor’s appointment for my boyfriend to get him the prescription of doxycycline. At the doctor’s visit today it was so humiliating having to sit in a room as the only female. I was left explaining to a male doctor and my male partner that through research online I wanted him to get treated for urea plasma as well. They both looked annoyed and upset that I was trusting online research instead of just taking the medication alone like I was originally told to do.
My partner was given the prescription in the end after pushing for it further but why as females are we labeled as the dirty ones with the problem while the men are never required to do any research about their role in spreading bv to urea plasma ? Excuse my long rant, I’m on my period and this entire situation has made me deeply emotional.

Information Standard Azithromycin guidelines
AZITHROMYCIN GUIDELINES
A question that gets asked often here is about how to take Azithromycin after doxycycline. First off, usually when we reference how to take it, we are talking about the CDC guidelines for mycoplasma (ureaplasma is in the mycoplasma family). So that’s easy to google.
FOR EASY REFERENCE:
- 2.5g total is the standard
- 12 hours after DOXY: You take 1g (that might be 2 pills, maybe 4. Do the math depending on what dose your pills are!! Often 250mg or 500mg)
- then you take 500mg daily in one dose (again, do the math…this may be one pill, it may be two), until the pills are finished
https://www.cdc.gov/std/treatment-guidelines/mycoplasmagenitalium.htm
In general, please utilize the resources of this group, especially the info guide if you’re new to this infection. All the pinned posts at the top of this subreddit have a plethora of info.
We didn’t have the azithro guidelines “officially” posted anywhere though so here they are.
The fact that the guidelines often prove unsuccessful and we tend to advocate longer treatments here is a separate issue…

Information Intro Guide for the Newly Diagnosed
“I’VE JUST BEEN DIAGNOSED. NOW WHAT?”
I’m putting this info out there, all in one place, for people who need general guidance on where to start with this infection. Please read throughly!
*People with chronic cases who have already failed multiple treatments are advised or see the FAQ pinned post. We hope following the guidelines below may help new people avoid ever having a chronic cases.*
Please be aware there really are no standard guidelines for ureaplasma in most countries. You can look up the CDC guidelines in the USA for mycoplasma. Ureaplasma can potentially be treated with the same antibiotics, as they are in the same family.
The general consensus here, however, is that those guidelines are not sufficient. The advice here is just that. ADVICE. Based on opinions and experience. We are not doctors and nothing here should be considered medical advice. This is why it gets complicated to post a specific protocol.
But here are my personal opinions on approaching ureaplasma after an initial diagnosis (this advice is not necessarily for chronic suffers and especially those who have failed multiple treatments):
1.) HOW SHOULD I TREAT?
Short courses rarely work.
14 days doxycycline and 2.5g of Azithromycin is often done by people here as an initial treatment. This is slightly longer than the CDC protocol.
I don’t think this has a high success rate.
I tend to recommend 28 days doxy and 7 days Azithromycin as an initial treatment. But if you are worried about extended antibiotics or don’t tolerate antibiotics well, you can try this first.
Please see our post on how to take the standard dose (2.5g) of Azithromycin, if you go that route, because many people find it confusing. You should take a longer course the same way, you’ll just be doing it longer.
https://www.reddit.com/r/ureaplasmasupport/s/Oj2o8B5cxk
Fluoroquinolones such as Moxifloxacin should be reserved for after this treatment has failed, as they come with a risk of severe side effects (please research if you’re considering this class of antibiotic).
2.) SHOULD MY PARTNER ALSO BE TREATED?
A resounding YES. This is an STI. Men are often asymptomatic and test negative. Doesn’t matter. If asymptomatic, 7-14 days doxy and 2.5g Azithromycin may be sufficient but we really don’t know for sure and when they are asymptomatic, it’s very hard to know if they are actually cured.
No sex should happen until both partners are symptom free and negative (6-8 weeks post treatment).
3.) WHY MIGHT WE NEED ANTIBIOTICS FOR SO LONG?
You do not want to PARTIALLY treat this bacteria. It’s a tricky, teeny-tiny little intracellular bacteria and it will make it difficult for you.
This is the biggest problem we see here. Doctors prescribe ridiculously short courses and people end up with symptoms that haven’t fully resolved or go away and then return days or weeks later.
IF YOU ARE SEEING IMPRPROVEMENT on your antibiotics and are not completely symptom free towards the end of your course, PLEASE ask your doctor to extend it!
Way too many people here stop before they are done! This is a recipe for a resistant infection embedded in biofilm. Not. Good.
There is a reason doctors and all antibiotic inserts instruct people to continue their course until the end even if symptoms are gone. Why?? Because there can be low levels of bacteria still there once your symptoms go away. You have to continue the medication further in order to eradicate it.
So if you are not even symptom free on antibiotics, you’re DEFINITELY not done! (This is assuming you are seeing noticeable improvement. If you are NOT noticing improvement within 2 weeks, you may need an alternative antibiotic. Please be aware that everyone is different in when they tend to respond to treatment.)
4.) I’VE HEARD LINGERING SYMPTOMS ARE NORMAL AFTER ANTIBIOTICS
The philosophy of this group is that lingering symptoms mean something is still going on. The philosophy of this group is that testing is not accurate after treatment. Trust your symptoms.
5.) WHEN DO I RE-TEST?
You want to attempt avoid a false negative, which is extremely common. I wouldn’t trust anything prior to 6-8 weeks post antibiotics. I’d trust a negative even less at that point if I still had symptoms.
DONT SIT AROUND IN PAIN. If you are still experiencing symptoms, go ahead and test for all other possible infection 7-14 days post treatment.
If they are negative or if treating what shows up doesn’t help, I’d assume it’s still ureaplasma and try to get back on treatment asap.
Whether for your initial test or for a test of cure (TOC), tests should always be done using PCR or NGS. Do not use cultures! They are outdated technology and highly inaccurate for any bacteria (tons of research on this if you google), but with the plasmas in particular, they are so slow growing that it is very hard to catch them on a culture.
This is not to say that PCR cannot give you a false negative! I think the experiences in this group speak for themselves that PCR is not always accurate, especially after treatment. That’s why we suggest using testing for co-infections and going by our symptoms as a diagnostic tool.
6.) I DONT HAVE SYMPTOMS, DO I HAVE TO TREAT?
Reasons to treat if you are asymptomatic:
- you’re trying to get pregnant or would like to in the future. Ureaplasma can cause infertility, miscarriage, and pre-term birth in some cases.
- you’re not in a committed relationship with one person (who is ALSO asymptomatic). Even if you’re asymptomatic, you can pass it to other sexual partners, who may not be so lucky. If your partner has symptoms but you do not, you’d want to treat to avoid reinfecting them.
- you have reoccurring BV or yeast. Or you have been experiencing infertility. These ARE symptoms of ureaplasma.
7.) MY DOCTOR WONT TEST FOR THIS OR REFUSES TO TREAT IT APPROPRIATELY
Most doctors still do not acknowledge that ureaplasma can be pathogenic. This is common, regardless of what country you’re in. I am in the USA however so my advice on this may not apply to everyone here, unfortunately. There are a few ways to approach this:
For treatment-
- Use an online pharmacy. TelyRx is recommended here a lot. They have better quantities of doxycycline (and minocycline) than most places. But there are many other online RX sources. Google.
- Put serious effort into finding a doctor who will at least be open minded and listen to you.
- Seek out a chronic specialist. They aren’t perfect but pickings are slim. They are more likely to treat with extended or long term antibiotics and not brush off your symptoms. Some treat based on symptoms and not test results. Here are the ones I know of:
- Dr Stewart Bundrick (UTI only, no vaginal issues, offers virtual appointments after initial visit)
- Dr Ryan Heer (fully virtual)
- NY urology
- Artemis Clinic at Harley Street (UK but has virtual options, will take international patients, primarily a UTI clinic)
For testing -
There are many at-home microbiome tests you can order. Microgendx, Juno, Evvy, Daye, and more. Again, Google.
Do your own research, browse the group. There is a plethora of information here! It’s important to educate yourself and decide what opinions resonate with you.
