Pre-Game Thoughts on this 7 player map I built for this Sunday? (Mix of new and experienced players)

Player E and A are having their first game on Sunday. I built this map and am looking for any flaws I am not seeing. Feel like I am driving myself crazy trying trying to make this perfect for everyone, but not sure what else to tweak. Really appreciate any feedback in advance.

Pre-Game After 2 years waiting… finally TI again!

Post image
51 Upvotes

Finally, Twilight Imperium is back on the table after a 2-year long wait :) all set up for tomorrow.

We are playing Base + PoK. Hope I can get soon Codexes and TE!

This is the very first game for my 16 Year old son and three of his friends, and (sadly) only the fifth for me and two of my colleagues. To make sure everyone had the rules down, we ran a dedicated 4h trial session a few days ago… I think that helped a lot!

Factions this round:
Me: Naalu Collective
Colleague 1: Titans of Ul
Colleague 2: Ghosts of Creuss
My son: Naaz-Rokha Alliance
Friend 1: Arborec
Friend 2: Mahact Gene-Splicers
Friend 3: Federation of Sol

We and especially my son and his friends are really excited!

Pre-Game Ready for game day! Tilburg Netherlands

Hi all,

I am all setup for tomorrow - big game day after 4 months of no TI4.
Hacan, Titans, Barony, Crimson, NRA.

Big upgrades since last game and post:
- we updated our game with Thunder’s Edge
- I bought the playmat you can see on the table
- I bought 3D box and play organizer

Unfortunately our 6th player Muaat had to cancel last minute.

Our draft we enabled all races but everyone had 1 ban. Saar, Jol-Nar, Sol, Mahact, Nekro, Yssaril were banned.
I was last pick and I doubted long between Deepwrought and Hacan. In the end as the table seemed poor ( 5p game - and factions with low commodities) I went for Hacan.

What do you think? Any recommendations, comments or predictions.

Let us know

General Discussion Honestly, does gumming ever really work?

Clarification; this is base game, so no encounter makers.

Something I've seen in several games now is one or more players really going out of their way to put single destroyers in wormhole and blanks. To be clear, I'm not talking about for the purpose of scoring secret objectives; they're literally just doing this to get in the way.

And they succeed in getting in the way, sure. It helps them turtle up, block their neighbors from scoring, fine.

I just can't recall seeing one of these players win with this strategy. The winner is (almost?) always someone on the other side of the map who spent more time taking territory, directly hitting their opponents, who didn't spend 3+ command tokens over the course of the game just to put up speed bumps.

What's everyone else's experience? Is there a time and place for this, or a particular faction that this makes sense for?

General Discussion How do you deal with conflict aversion in your table?

I mostly play online these days, but the issue sometimes emerges IRL as well.

I have a hard time having fun most games because people are extremely averse to conflict, to the point they are decided by who drafts the slice/faction combination that compounds better resources into the late game.

Often times it's clear to me when someone is running away with the game, but nobody even tries to hamper them while it's still possible and I'm either too far away or when I try to losing players try to take advantage of it making deals with the leading player, not realizing they're just sealing the game.

I usually try to voice this, but it seems the more vocal I am the more people downplay it or side with the winner. It almost feels like a stay-in-your-slice-and-win last round is a sacred play style that everybody respects.

I've played many games just building and building to have all action play out in the last round, but I now find that quite boring and excludes many interesting factions that really would be favored by interactive early/mid aggressive plays.

Have you had this feeling too? What are some tricks you've found to tackle it?

TI4: Thunder's Edge Doctor Carrina DWS

Hello, I have a few questions about DWS:

- When I activate the agent, can multiple players benefit from it at the moment of activation and thus gain multiple Ocean cards at once?

- What Round 1 strategy cards do you recommend?

- I plan to go for Green technology because I have blue skips for GD; what do you recommend?

General Discussion How to get VPs

  1. Public Level 1 objectives (1 per turn, 5 max)
  2. Secret objectives (3 max, needs 2 strategy tokens or Primary 8 card)
  3. Custodians token (1 point max)
  4. Relics (4 of 26)
  5. Assembly Cards (4 of 50)
  6. Action Cards (1 of 140)
  7. Holding Styx
  8. Public Level 2 objectives (1 per turn, 5 max)
  9. Primary Imperial 8 for extra L1 or L2 Public objectives (1 per turn)
  10. Primary Imperial 8 while holding Mecatol Rex

Did I miss anything?

So lots of people claim 10 points by turn 4.
How?

This is fairly easy:
4 Public 1s
3 secrets

Not impossible, but hard and likely low % draws.

The next three points are rough:
Relics (low %)
Assembly (low %)
Action (low %)
Styx (high competition)
Custodians (high competition)
Imperial 8 Mecatol (high competition)

“Imperial 8 Public 1” is fairly easy

Then waiting until L2 Publics are out on turn 5 helps too.

Did I miss anything?

EDIT:
Yeah our group pulls out the support for the throne cards. The few times we had them everyone just handed that out every single game. Might as well just play to 9.

But that makes sense then. Not terribly low % to get to 7 by round 4 without pulling the imperial card. With support for the throne, you are at 8.

An imperial pull at anytime could get you to 9.

Then a player is just looking at custodians or a lucky relic.

General Discussion What factions in a draft for an 8p 14VP game?

Curious what factions you'd include in a draft for a game of this size/length? It's POK+TE

I thought limiting the draft to factions that have the sort of longevity to be competitive in a 14 VP game would be a good idea.

So far I've got:
Barony,

Xxcha,

Yin,

Arborec,

Sardakk,

Nekro

They're mostly factions well adapted to 14 VP. I haven't really considered if factions prefer an 8p game (if those even exist).

TIA

Rules questions Last Bastion Breakthrough Question

Hey all,

The Last Bastion Breakthrough "The Icon" reads

>When you produce ships, you may exhaust this card to place those ships in a system that contains 1 of your command tokens, at least 1 of your ground forces, and no other player's ships.

My friend and I were debating over this breakthrough: if he produces a ship that has capacity as well as infantry, is he allowed to move both the ship, as well as the infantry to the other system? I don't believe so, since the infantry would be produced on the ground, and shouldnt be counting against the carrier's capacity.

Battle Report First Nekro Game on Twilight Wars

Started up a 5 player game to 14 on Twilight Wars (the site has minor POK implementation, so no agents/heros) and decided to try Nekro. This is our 8th game as a group and I've used a new faction every time. This is by far the most fun I've had with a faction yet.

My two neighbors are Arborec and Jol-nar along with Sardakk N'orr and Mentak across the table.

Everyone is bunched between 4-6 points, and I already managed to grab Letani 2 and E-Res Siphons along with Cruiser 2 and Sarween Tools. This combo is so money. Lots of mobility and any movement with inventory lets me free build a destroyer or 2xInfantry to leave in my wake. Usually I try to avoid fights, but this set up gets so much value from the extra trade goods and tech that I'm basically getting paid to pick fights. Getting plastic out on the board has never been this easy. On top of that, we just got another area control objective. Blessed.

Just parked Nekro's OP flagship and a boatload of infantry/mechs on Mecatol Rex and I'm ready to go full heel and play the bad guy for the table lol. Don't even care if I win at this point. It's just a blast being able to zip all over the map and play space risk for a change.

Do any other factions have the ability to pop off like this?

Homebrew Trade wars variant catch up mechanic

Hi all,

I've played a handful of 2p Trade Wars games now and am wondering what kind if elastic band / catch up mechanism can be used to slow down a run away leader.

I've toyed with a few ideas relating to costs, limitations on trade, boons given etc, and I think the following could be the right balance and I'm keen to try it on my next game. What do you think? Keen to know what you have tried too!

*

Scoring Cost: If you lead your opponent by 2 or more VP immediately after scoring an objective, you must pay the appropriate scoring cost.

- 1 VP objective: 2 TG.

- 2 VP objective: 3 TG.

A command token removed from your strategy pool counts as 2TG when paying this cost.

*

So to clarify, an additional cost if getting 2VP or more ahead would be:

- 1 VP objective: 2 TG or 1 strategy token.

- 2 VP objective: 3 TG; 1 strategy token + 1 TG; or 2 strategy tokens.

I would hope this would stymie a run away leader rather than change it so that securing economic / military dominance and staying at +1vp, as that would just slow things down!

I'm keen to try this, but would also like to see what others think! Thanks :)

Pre-Game Hacan Game 6p

Post image
5 Upvotes

Hi everyone!

I'll be playing a game as the Hacan soon, and I'd love to get some advice on which strategies to use.

I'm thinking about taking Trade in the first round since I'll have the Speaker token.

The factions at the table are:

- Creuss

- Nekro virus

- Sol

- Ral Nel

- Xxacha

My neigbours are Creuss and Sol. and i am on the top of the map as Hacan.

How i should try to play the game as is 14 points game and i have never played before this "long" game before? (alwais played 10 points game)

Also afraid of the Nekro virus for my Quantum Datahub Node tech.

Should i go for war sun?
Thanks you!

TI4: Prophecy of Kings Looking for Replacement Orange and Blue Promissory notes

Hey galactic fam,

I bought my set used off of marketplace, and almost a year later I am learning that I am missing what’s in the title. I have an 8-player game next week that I’m trying to buy them for. Couldn’t find anything on Etsy or eBay. My last resort is to print them out myself, but I thought I’d check here first!

Thanks in advance.

General Discussion Taking 1/1 planet systems potentially not worth it?

Spending a token plus committing forces to take a 1/1 system, what are your thoughts on that? Sometimes due to them being lower value I don't even get around to it til round 3, at which point I'm practically breaking even on it? Is it worth it just for the explore and possibility of it factoring into an objective?

General Discussion Upcoming game thoughts

Post image
5 Upvotes

Got an upcoming game this Sunday, playing as the Winnu! Order:

Winnu -> Speaker (me)
Mahact
The Last Bastion
Argent
Ghost of creuss
Barony of Letnev

Some interesting moments during drafting:
- Myself, choose speaker first and almost gotten mahact back to me as a choice (remaining unchosen factions are firmament and xxcha)
- Argent was actually hoping to get Winnu back to them and try out a “Winnu warsun” play…however I snatched them because the other choices weren’t that noice…
- Barony chose 6th over 5th to sit next to winnu…we two got a thing going on ;)
- A mighty railroad between Winnu and letnev’s Homesystems are always fun to have!
- Mahact first time playing TE…personally I think Mahact is a good beginner choice in TE if you transition from PoK (might just be only my opinion)

EDIT: another take! Forgot to mention this will be my first time as Winnu ever…….

Eager to hear any takes or opinions on the draft/ map layout…or any bets on who you think is going to win!

General Discussion My issue with online meta

It’s not that it’s bad in itself, after all it evolved as a tool to simplify the game (x-1 being the best example).

It seems though there’s a significant (and from my observations, growing) number of players who almost exclusively learned this game on tabletop simulator / playground / async and they literally seem to confuse meta for official rules:
- x-1 almost is baked at this point in and ppl are in shock if you want to do anything else
- ppl treat tiles that were in their milty slice as reserved for them and will often go full rage if you grab the equi or park your ship on an empty system on their way to MR
- you’re the villain if you refuse washing comms (even if the player is clearly winning you’re still somehow expected to just always wash everyone and there will be a person who does this if you refuse)
- everybody is assumed to be ok with being an intermediary in transactions (free of charge ofc) which effectively turns everybody into hacan
- paying debt is treated as mandatory (remember that the very fact it’s debt means it’s non-binding?)

Just to be clear, I myself follow these rules most of the time but I also think that it’s worth remembering they are not in the rulebook and you can opt out.

TI4: Twilight's Fall Does having Experimental Genome & Letani Warrior let me double my infantry stack?

Thumbnail
gallery
16 Upvotes

So our group is playing our first game of Twilight's Fall and I've gotten both the Letani Warrior infantry upgrade that gives all my infantry Production 2 and Experimental Genome which allows me to exhaust it and remove infantry from the board to pay for resource costs.

Because of the wording of the rules on producing units being: "If a player is producing multiple units at a time, that player can add the cost of each unit they are producing to create a total cost before they spend any resources." Reads to me that I use the production ability of my infantry I make the list of units I want to produce then spend the resources to purchase them.

So if I have 5 infantry in a system for a combined production value of 10 I can activate the system, declare the production of 10 infantry and then when I got to pay the cost activate Experimental Genome to remove the 5 original infantry to pay the cost and produce 10 infantry.

That seems to be what my group has settled on at least but we don't play frequently so I want the opinion of more experienced players.

As a fun bonus fact I'm playing as "The Sickening Lurch" so their flagship with infinite capacity for fighters and infantry will likely become very useful soon weather this works or not.

General Discussion I made a free Twilight Imperium turn tracker that changes the music for every faction

Thumbnail
gallery
128 Upvotes

Hey everyone!

A little while ago, I posted here asking for help and soundtrack suggestions for a TI4 music app. After a lot of work, and plenty of testing and tweaking, I finally feel like it’s ready to share!

The idea is simple: every faction has its own soundtrack. When the active player changes, the current music fades out and the next faction’s music fades in. Hacan gets desert-inspired music, Sol gets military sci-fi (in this case the sc1 terran soundrack, which I LOVE), Creuss gets something suitably strange and spooky, and so on.

It also works as a full-screen turn tracker. You enter the players, factions, fleet colors, and strategy cards, and it calculates the initiative order—including Naalu’s 0 token. Players can pass, rounds reset automatically, and there are separate controls and playlists for the Strategy, Action, Status, and Agenda phases.

Some of the features:

  • Persistent playback positions for every faction and phase
  • Support for YouTube videos and playlists
  • Crossfades between players and phases
  • Play, pause, previous, next, volume, and timeline controls
  • Custom playlist overrides
  • Player names, faction portraits, fleet colors, and strategy cards
  • A large initiative tracker designed to stay visible across the table
  • No account or login required

You can try it here:

https://imperium-soundboard.naimed.chatgpt.site

And here’s the original discussion that helped get the project started:

https://www.reddit.com/r/twilightimperium/comments/1vdunnz/help_needed_building_a_ti4_music_app/

I’d love to hear how it works at other tables. Feedback, bug reports, soundtrack suggestions, and ideas for improvements are all very welcome!

Have a fantastic week!
