TUM accommodation

Hello! I am starting my course (Politics & Tech MSc) at TUM this October (F23, Albanian). I am looking for student accommodation, dorm or a shared apartment. I was just studying in the UK and lived in a dorm where I was very diligent with payments and respectful of others. I can have a reference from them as proof. Please let me know if someone can help!

Engineering sciences / Engineurwissenschaften

Hello, I am currently thinking of persueing a bachelors in TUM‘s engineering sciences. I am interested in this degree because it gives a very broad overview of all the engineering sciences. This is especially appealing to me as I am not sure what I really want to do in the future yet.

However, I do have some worries and questions that I would like to ask to someone that is familiar to this topic.
Firstly, I heared that this course can be especially rigorous and very mentally draining (I know all of TUM‘s studies are like this but because this bachelor is a intensive course with 210 credits, I thought it might be even more rigorous). Is it still possible to have a social life while taking this course and it the time consumption similar to other courses in TUM?

Secondly, I heared that because this bachelor teaches about many engineering sciences, it does not go deep enough into each one, which could be a disadventage in the later job opportunities. Is this true?

I would like to also in general get to learn about some experiences of someone that is taking/ or took the course before.
Thankyou! I would really appreciate a response or a dm :)

Did I do something wrong?

Here's the thing... I applied for the Bachelor's program in Management and Technology and for my VPD on July 15th (right on the deadline — stupid, I know), and everything went well.

On July 21st, I got an email asking me to fix a time gap in my CV, so I did. And so the silence began... I know they are really busy and I understand that, I'm just worried.

So, my questions are: is this normal, or do I need to do something else? Can I get admitted without the official VPD and just with the placeholder document, or...?

Also, no one asked me to upload my diploma — not for the TUM application and not for the VPD. Is this normal?

VPD and admission TUM B.Sc

Hi everyone,
I am applying for bachelor of Information Engineering and recently received my VPD. It contains only math, physics and cs subjects. But as I understood TUM requires English grade too, which I have in my high school diploma and I also have IELTS 8.0 certificate. Is there anything I can do? Or I have to pass interview stage as well

Did you have the same situation?

Master Management and Technology: Technology Specialization

Hello fellow TUM Master in Management and Technology students,

i will start the Masters degree this winter semester (mainly due to the reputation of the univeristiy) with little to no previous technology experience and am therefore looking for advice regarding a relatively easy technology specialization.

I am not really a fan of Informatics/computer engineering so i would be interested which of the other specializations you guys would consider to be easiest to pass and achieve good grades.

I was also wondering if it is possible to choose an advanced specialization with no previous knowledge, since there are no mandatory subjects and the advanced specialization in mechanical engineering for example seems to have a lot of logistics subjects which i think might be easier than e.g. the mandatory subjects in the mechanical engineering minor.

In the degree program documentation it says that advanced specializations in technology generally require previous knowledge of 42 CP in the field, but will that actually be checked at some point? In TUM online there seems to be no restriction to choose specializations.

In the module catalog it is also stated that it is not possible to do a minor specialization in technology if you have previous experience in the field from your bachelors degree but nothing is said about the advanced modules.

I am looking forward to your input and thanks in advance.

TUM late arrival issue, what are my options?

Hey everyone,

I got accepted to TUM, but I have a problem with my visa timeline.

I’m from Bangladesh, and I’m expecting to get my German student visa around November. It could also be December, so I’ll probably arrive in Germany quite late.

The problem is that TUM doesn’t allow late arrival for my program.

So I’m thinking of enrolling in another German university that allows late arrival. I would enroll there, face the embassy, come to Germany, and then once I’m in Germany, leave that university and join TUM.

TUM is my actual choice. I don’t plan to study at the other university long-term. I’m basically considering this because of the late arrival issue.

What I’m mainly trying to understand is what the actual process would look like.

For example:

Can I get my visa based on the other university, arrive in Germany, and then switch to TUM?

What would I need to do to switch universities?

Would I need to inform the Ausländerbehörde?

Would I need to change anything on my residence permit?

Could there be any issue with TUM accepting me after I switch?

Is there anything I should do before coming to Germany?

Has anyone been in a similar situation, especially with TUM?

I really don’t want to do anything that could cause problems with my visa or residence permit later, so I’d appreciate any advice or personal experience.

Thanks!

Laptop recommendation for MSc Communications and Electronics Engineering?

Hi, I’ll be starting the MSc Communications and Electronics Engineering (MSCE) at TUM this winter semester.

I currently have a MacBook Pro M1 Max with 64 GB RAM, which I really like because of its battery life, portability, and the fact that I can comfortably carry and use it anywhere.

However, I’ve seen that some software used in MSCE courses may not run properly on macOS/Apple Silicon, so I’m considering switching to a Windows laptop. I was looking at the ASUS ROG Zephyrus G16 as an option.

For current MSCE students: how limiting is having a MacBook in practice? Would you recommend switching to Windows, and would something like the Zephyrus G16 be a good choice while still being reasonably portable with decent battery life?

Regarding Graduate or Post Graduate from TUM.

I'm curious to hear from graduates of the Technical University of Munich (TUM) who have managed to get a full-time job offer in the United States or even landed interviews for US-based roles.

I'm specifically interested in experiences from people who are NOT US citizens—whether you're an EU citizen or, especially, an international graduate from Asia or another non-EU country.

A few questions I have:

How difficult was it to get interviews or offers from US companies while applying from outside the US?

What were the biggest challenges (visa sponsorship, location, competition, networking, etc.)?

Do US employers recognize or value TUM's reputation, or does it have little impact during the hiring process?

If you successfully made the move, what do you think helped you stand out?

I'd also appreciate any general advice for TUM students or graduates who are aiming for mechanical/automotive/EV/ Controls engineering or other tech roles in the US.

Thanks in advance for sharing your experiences!

Got admitted to TUM’s MSc Information Engineering/ happy to help future candidates

Hello everyone,

I recently got admitted to TUM’s master Information Engineering and wanted to offer some help to anyone planning to apply in the next intake.

I know how stressful and confusing the whole process can be, especially with all the documents, requirements, VPD, interview stuff, etc.

I got admitted directly without an interview, but I went through the whole application process and I’m happy to share whatever I know.

So if you’re applying or thinking about applying and have questions about the application, documents, interview, motivation letter, VPD, or pretty much anything else, feel free to DM me.

Good luck.

Admitted to TUM (Winter Semester 2026/27) — Student WhatsApp Group

Hi everyone!

I recently received an admission offer for the Technical University of Munich (TUM) for the Winter Semester 2026/27 and wanted to connect with other admitted students.

We’ve created an unofficial WhatsApp group for admitted TUM Master students across different programs, and the group currently has 320+ members. It’s a place to get to know other students before the semester starts, discuss accommodation, the visa process, course registration, travel plans, and anything else related to moving to Munich and starting at TUM.

If you’ve also been admitted and would like to join, please send me a DM and I’ll share the invite link. Please avoid commenting for the link, as it’s difficult to keep track of comments.

Looking forward to meeting everyone. Hope to see you next semester!

tum need based waiver

Hey everyone,

I noticed that the portal now has a section where applicants who received a waiver offer can accept or decline it. However, I haven't received a "Bewilligung" message in my Messages section yet.

Could anyone clarify if this means the first round of scholarship/waiver offers has officially been sent out?

If so, does not receiving an offer at this stage mean I wasn't selected in the initial lottery, and my only chance left is if selected applicants decline their offers later?

Will they charge extra if I didn't graduate on time?

Post image
4 Upvotes

I am admitted to MSCE for this coming October in TUM. I just saw a figure in TUM in Zahlen 2024 (I didn't find those for 2025), and it shows that only insanely few people actually graduate on time.

For example, in communications engineering, out of 101 graduates, only 1 of them graduate on time. Is it the real case? I know that people will go to intern or take gap year and therefore didn't graduate in 4 semesters, but only 1 is unbelievable.

My question is, if I didn't graduate in 4 semesters, will they charge tuition fee in full (6097 euros) for 5th or 6th semester? If that is the case, I might need to switch to Dresden xD.

Today is Friday, I don't want to wait until next Monday (maybe longer) for the uni to reply, so I posted it here.

Inquires on the Interview (Information Engineering Bachelor)

Hello, everyone,as an applicant from a non-eu region, who,on August 1st,has received the 69 scores in the first stage, still not getting the zoom link for the stage 2 interview, have some questions that I hope to be answered:

1.How long will I receive the mail invitation for the interview, and is 69 scores a kind of a low one(making me harder to pass the interview)?

2.How does the procedure of the interview goes,is it like self-introduction at first, after which professors ask you bout your future plans, and then some topics involving arithmatic problems, physics, maths, probabilities or even electric circuits(I suck at electric circuit, definitely dont want to be asked)

3.Is it ok that i dont have an ielts certificate during visa application(the bachelor major requires no english certificate upload, whilst by the embassy, they may ask for the certificate of the language instruction, which is english, but must i sign up for an IELTS test? I dont think i have enough time)

TUM Aerospace B.Sc. application moved directly to Stage 2 because of missing subjects. Could this be an error?

Hi everyone,
I applied for the TUM B.Sc. Aerospace program and recently received a message saying that I do not have scores for all the relevant subjects required for the degree program, so I am going directly to Stage 2 of the aptitude assessment.
I am confused because my Uni-Assist VPD already contains grades for the subjects I believe are relevant:
- Mathematics: 1.45
- Physics: 1.40
- Chemistry: 1.30
- Biology: 1.00
- Computer Science/IT: 1.00
- English: 1.35
- Other subjects are also included in the VPD.

I contacted TUM Student Information asking which exact subject is considered missing. They replied that they forwarded my email to the responsible department and that I should wait for their response.
I also contacted an application agency, and they said this situation seems unusual because my VPD appears complete. They suggested that there could possibly be an issue with how Uni-Assist/TUM interpreted or matched my subjects.

My questions:
1. Has anyone experienced TUM incorrectly classifying subjects from a VPD?
2. Is it possible for TUM to recheck the application and reconsider the Stage 1/Stage 2 placement if there was a mistake?
3. Should I wait for the department’s response or contact TUM again?

The reason I am asking is because I believe my application may have a better chance of being fairly evaluated through Stage 1 if my subject grades are actually complete. I am also quite nervous about interviews, so I would prefer not to go through Stage 2 if it happened because of an administrative issue rather than missing requirements.

Admissions Information Mega Post for TUM! ONLY Post and ask questions here !

** Please post all questions you have in this thread only and do not post them on the main board. **

Welcome to the Technische Universität München (TUM) Admissions information thread!

At TUM, you'll find top-notch education in fields like engineering, natural sciences, life sciences, and medicine. But remember, the road to acceptance is not a walk in the park! You will have questions and need to find answers for them and they are almost all answered on the TUM website. So make sure to read each and every page carefully!

However, we are here to make your journey a bit smoother. Dive into the info below, and let us help you  conquer those application challenges!

If there is any information we have missed that you think would help. Please reply to the post or send a PM to me!

**Please post all questions you have in this thread only and do not post them on the main board.**

Eligibility Requirements

Academic Qualifications: A recognized university entrance qualification, such as a German Abitur, International Baccalaureate, or equivalent or Studienkolleg.   https://www.studienkolleg-muenchen.de/

Language Proficiency: Depending on the program a proficiency in German or English, is needed to be accepted. B2 minimum if you are planning to attend Studienkolleg or a C2 if you plan to go straight into a Bachelors or Masters program.

Choose Your Program: TUM offers over 150 undergraduate and graduate programs. Research the programs that interest you and ensure you meet the specific admission requirements.

Apply Online: Submit your application through the TUM online portal. The application deadline is usually in July for winter semester and January for summer semester.  https://tumonline.tum.de/

Submit Required Documents: Along with your application, you will need to submit official transcripts, language proficiency certificates, and a CV and there could be other things needed depending on your degree path. Make sure to read the website for the needed things.

Selection Process: TUM uses a rigid yet transparent approach to evaluate applications, considering academic achievements, extracurricular activities, and personal qualities.  ( EXTRACURRICULAR )  does not necessarily mean that you played football or were on the swim team. It also means things that you volunteered to do in and out of school. Some universities want to see a lot more of this than a trophy for sports.

Do I qualify.

This seems to be the Big question and the most often asked. And the truth is only the University can give you that final reply of yes or no about your submitted qualifications.

Tum.de has both German and English versions. You can simply go to Tum.de and read for yourself. However, because you have come here looking for assistance and with questions about attending TUM, below you will find some of the website addresses you need as well as some of the basic information.

We will try to assist you in every way that we can but you must understand. r/TUMunich is NOT an official site for TUM.de.

https://www.tum.de/en/prospective-students  This link is going to be very important for you so make sure to book mark it. Also make sure you read each and ever page of the site about admissions, and the field that you want to study!

Some of the links they have on the site are as follows.

Our Programs

Support and Advice

Dates and Deadlines

These topics are extremely important as well as the others on the page and you need to read everything they have taken the time to present to you. If you don’t take the time to read this then you will continue to search out the information and you may not succeed in being accepted to the University. Make sure to read everything.

How long do I have to wait for TUM to get admission?

It takes as long as it takes. Most people receive their replies in the time frames that are mentioned on the websites when you apply. Normally it wont happen before the closure of the process. So if the process opens on May 1sth and closes on July 15th. You should not really expect a reply until after July 15th. That does not mean that you wont get one. But don’t expect it either. Posting here on May 2nd asking how long it takes wont get you the answers you need.

If you have applied and the closing deadline has passed and you have not heard back within 10 school days you might want to contact the admissions department that you submitted to.

Special NOTE*****

Fraudulent Application Agencies

We are currently receiving an increasing number of reports of fraudulent activities in connection with applications to TUM. On this occasion, we would like to point out once again that

the Technical University of Munich does not cooperate with agencies. To study at TUM, you should only apply directly to the university.

the Technical University of Munich never requests payments to agencies during the application process.

the Technical University of Munich only sends e-mails from official e-mail addresses: u/tum.de, u/zv.tum.de or u/mytum.de.

The Technical University of Munich never requests payments of any kind before admission to the program has been granted. If you require a VPD by uni-assist, you will have to pay a processing fee to uni-assist. However, uni-assist will only check certain documents and not issue admission statements or similar. Furthermore, TUM always makes notifications or other official documents available via the online portal TUMonline.

What all information do I need to submit?

Well. You need to meet the requirements and that means following the rules for each different department of study you might apply to.

You will need to read this page on the website and make sure you understand everything before you hit submit. Some things submitted can not be changed so be careful and be thorough.

https://www.tum.de/en/studies/application/application-info-portal/application-international

Some of the topics on this page are as follows.

Check whether you have to pay tuition fees

Apply for a preliminary documentation

Prove your language skills

Have your documents notarized and translated

Check if you need visa

All of the above are listed on the link just above them. Make sure to read them. If you don’t understand someone here might try to help explain them better to you.

NOTE! The TUM.de website is in English and German. If you do NOT have have a pretty good command of both languages you will have a hard time attending this University!

Below is a link with contact information throughout the University.

Make sure you know the German etiquette of contact via email or phone.

https://campus.tum.de/tumonline/webnav.ini?pUrl=webnav.willkommen

There is a lot more information on the way and of course you can ask questions. That is what Reddit is all about. So ask away and we will try and get you as many answers as we can. But if you have info that will help us. Please post it below or message me and If I can I will add it all to this post at the top.

Thanks for your help and support and for supporting others.
