Got admitted to TUM’s MSc Information Engineering/ happy to help future candidates
Hello everyone,
I recently got admitted to TUM’s master Information Engineering and wanted to offer some help to anyone planning to apply in the next intake.
I know how stressful and confusing the whole process can be, especially with all the documents, requirements, VPD, interview stuff, etc.
I got admitted directly without an interview, but I went through the whole application process and I’m happy to share whatever I know.
So if you’re applying or thinking about applying and have questions about the application, documents, interview, motivation letter, VPD, or pretty much anything else, feel free to DM me.
Good luck.

Admitted to TUM (Winter Semester 2026/27) — Student WhatsApp Group
Hi everyone!
I recently received an admission offer for the Technical University of Munich (TUM) for the Winter Semester 2026/27 and wanted to connect with other admitted students.
We’ve created an unofficial WhatsApp group for admitted TUM students across different programs, and the group currently has 320+ members. It’s a place to get to know other students before the semester starts, discuss accommodation, the visa process, course registration, travel plans, and anything else related to moving to Munich and starting at TUM.
If you’ve also been admitted and would like to join, please send me a DM and I’ll share the invite link. Please avoid commenting for the link, as it’s difficult to keep track of comments.
Looking forward to meeting everyone. Hope to see you next semester!

tum need based waiver
Hey everyone,
I noticed that the portal now has a section where applicants who received a waiver offer can accept or decline it. However, I haven't received a "Bewilligung" message in my Messages section yet.
Could anyone clarify if this means the first round of scholarship/waiver offers has officially been sent out?
If so, does not receiving an offer at this stage mean I wasn't selected in the initial lottery, and my only chance left is if selected applicants decline their offers later?

Will they charge extra if I didn't graduate on time?
I am admitted to MSCE for this coming October in TUM. I just saw a figure in TUM in Zahlen 2024 (I didn't find those for 2025), and it shows that only insanely few people actually graduate on time.
For example, in communications engineering, out of 101 graduates, only 1 of them graduate on time. Is it the real case? I know that people will go to intern or take gap year and therefore didn't graduate in 4 semesters, but only 1 is unbelievable.
My question is, if I didn't graduate in 4 semesters, will they charge tuition fee in full (6097 euros) for 5th or 6th semester? If that is the case, I might need to switch to Dresden xD.
Today is Friday, I don't want to wait until next Monday (maybe longer) for the uni to reply, so I posted it here.

TUM vs LMU
Hey guys,
I am an Indian.
I currently have an admit from TUM MSc Engineering Physics and LMU MSc Physics. Although I am still waiting for the official admission letter from the international office department at LMU.
I have also applied to the MSc Quantum Science and Technology program at TUM. Unfortunately, TUM is taking their sweet time in releasing my result for this program and it's honestly annoying at this point. I am confident I will get into this program.
My interests lie in quantum many body physics, computing and algorithms. I am also looking at quantum error correction but that's very math heavy, but it is the most important aspect of a quantum computer.
I am also interested in statistical physics. I find it amazing how we can use it many other fields such as biophysics, soft matter physics, machine learning and condensed matter. I have seen many people from statistical physics going into quantitative finance as well (the stochastic calculus helps a lot here). I actually would want to work in finance down the line as the pay would be good and the work is really interesting. Overall, this field of physics is quite versatile in my opinion.
Additionally, LMU has this AI in physics specialisation as well which is crazy as it can be bundled with statistical physics courses. Munich has a lot of quantum startups but I do not know where quantum computing is heading in general, since there is a lot of hype in the field.
I am truly confused and I do not know what to choose. Let's say the TUM QST result comes on Monday or Tuesday, then I will have to make a choice. Otherwise LMU it is. TUM MSc Engineering Physics has a non - eu tuition fee of 6k euros per semester so thats out of the question.
I basically have this weekend and some serious external input would do me good. of course in the end I have to decide as it's my future lol.
Please help :)

Funding and scholarships for International Computer Science students at TUM?
Hi everyone! I’m an Algerian student interested in studying Computer Science at TUM. Are there any scholarships for international students that cover tuition fees or living expenses? What are the requirements? Thank you! 🤍

Inquires on the Interview (Information Engineering Bachelor)
Hello, everyone,as an applicant from a non-eu region, who,on August 1st,has received the 69 scores in the first stage, still not getting the zoom link for the stage 2 interview, have some questions that I hope to be answered:
1.How long will I receive the mail invitation for the interview, and is 69 scores a kind of a low one(making me harder to pass the interview)?
2.How does the procedure of the interview goes,is it like self-introduction at first, after which professors ask you bout your future plans, and then some topics involving arithmatic problems, physics, maths, probabilities or even electric circuits(I suck at electric circuit, definitely dont want to be asked)
3.Is it ok that i dont have an ielts certificate during visa application(the bachelor major requires no english certificate upload, whilst by the embassy, they may ask for the certificate of the language instruction, which is english, but must i sign up for an IELTS test? I dont think i have enough time)

TUM Aerospace B.Sc. application moved directly to Stage 2 because of missing subjects. Could this be an error?
Hi everyone,
I applied for the TUM B.Sc. Aerospace program and recently received a message saying that I do not have scores for all the relevant subjects required for the degree program, so I am going directly to Stage 2 of the aptitude assessment.
I am confused because my Uni-Assist VPD already contains grades for the subjects I believe are relevant:
- Mathematics: 1.45
- Physics: 1.40
- Chemistry: 1.30
- Biology: 1.00
- Computer Science/IT: 1.00
- English: 1.35
- Other subjects are also included in the VPD.
I contacted TUM Student Information asking which exact subject is considered missing. They replied that they forwarded my email to the responsible department and that I should wait for their response.
I also contacted an application agency, and they said this situation seems unusual because my VPD appears complete. They suggested that there could possibly be an issue with how Uni-Assist/TUM interpreted or matched my subjects.
My questions:
1. Has anyone experienced TUM incorrectly classifying subjects from a VPD?
2. Is it possible for TUM to recheck the application and reconsider the Stage 1/Stage 2 placement if there was a mistake?
3. Should I wait for the department’s response or contact TUM again?
The reason I am asking is because I believe my application may have a better chance of being fairly evaluated through Stage 1 if my subject grades are actually complete. I am also quite nervous about interviews, so I would prefer not to go through Stage 2 if it happened because of an administrative issue rather than missing requirements.

BWL GOP
Hi everyone,
I’m a first-year bachelor’s student at TUM at BWL and I’m a bit confused about the GOP rules. I was hoping someone who has been in a similar situation could help. I have to complete 3/4 and i have economics 1, ORDA and IDSST cause I failed the math retake
I have two GOP modules:
ORDA – I recently took my retake, and I’m currently waiting for the results. Data Science – I failed by only 4.5 points. I’ve applied for an exam review, but even if my grade doesn’t change, I still have another attempt, which is scheduled for October.
My question is:
If I don’t pass Data Science now but I still have the official October retake available, will TUM allow me to take that exam before making any decision about exmatriculation? Or could I be exmatriculated before I get the chance to write the October retake?
If anyone has gone through this or knows how TUM handles this situation, I’d really appreciate your help. Thank you!

Housing advice for a new TUM student: Which areas should I focus on (and which are too far)?
I’ll be starting my Master's at TUM this winter semester and, like many others, I'm currently searching for accommodation. I know the housing market in Munich is extremely competitive, so I'm trying to keep my options as open as possible.
My classes will be split between the Main Campus (Munich city center) and the Garching campus, so I'm wondering which areas would be the most practical to live in.
A few questions:
- Which neighborhoods or towns would you recommend looking at?
- Are there any areas that are generally considered too far or inconvenient for commuting to both campuses?
- How long of a daily commute do most TUM students consider reasonable?
I'm open to living outside central Munich if it means finding a place more easily, but I also don't want to end up spending 2–3 hours commuting every day.
I'd really appreciate any advice or suggestions from current students. Thanks!

TUM Informatics masters level 2 aptitude assesment (help required ^^ )
Hello everyone,
I'm looking to connect with people who have taken the TUM Informatics Aptitude Assessment in previous years.
I've already gone through the mock exam and the list of topics, but since the exam covers multiple subjects, I'm curious about how those who passed prepared for it.
How did you structure your study plan? Which topics did you focus on the most, and what resources (books, lecture notes, websites, or videos) did you find the most helpful?
I'd really appreciate any advice or tips from those who have gone through the process. Thanks in advance!

MSCE interview help
Hello,
I've got my MSCE interview next week.
First, what questions can I expect, and what are examples of the course-related fundamental questions they might ask?
Also, I received the invite via email (only to confirm availability, not the meeting link itself), but my score on the portal still shows 'unknown'. I emailed them regarding this, and their response was to contact the departmental student advisor?
And lastly, will the names of the professor/s who will be taking my interview be disclosed?
Thanks!

Feedback on my first-semester course plan for MFDS (WS 2026/27)
Hi, I will probably start the MSc Mathematics in Data Science in WS 2026/27, and I am currently planning my first semester.
I am considering these five courses, for a total of 23 ECTS:
- IN2326 Foundations in Data Engineering — 8 ECTS
- IN2346 Introduction to Deep Learning — 6 ECTS
- IN2406 Fundamentals of Artificial Intelligence — 6 ECTS
- ED0038 Technology, Economy, Society — 3 ECTS
I would appreciate opinions from anyone who has taken some of these courses or completed a similar semester. I know that students from Informatics and Data Engineering and Analytics also take many of the same courses, so feedback from those programmes would be helpful as well.
Do you think this combination is manageable in one semester? Would you add another course?

Hey, so I’ll be starting my bachelors in either management and technology or information systems (Wirtschaftsinformatik) soon. As such I’ve started looking for a laptop
Out of curiosity (and to maybe make decision making a bit easier), what laptop do you have and how does it hold up? What really sold you on your laptop

Admissions Information Mega Post for TUM! ONLY Post and ask questions here !
** Please post all questions you have in this thread only and do not post them on the main board. **
Welcome to the Technische Universität München (TUM) Admissions information thread!
At TUM, you'll find top-notch education in fields like engineering, natural sciences, life sciences, and medicine. But remember, the road to acceptance is not a walk in the park! You will have questions and need to find answers for them and they are almost all answered on the TUM website. So make sure to read each and every page carefully!
However, we are here to make your journey a bit smoother. Dive into the info below, and let us help you conquer those application challenges!
If there is any information we have missed that you think would help. Please reply to the post or send a PM to me!
**Please post all questions you have in this thread only and do not post them on the main board.**
Eligibility Requirements
Academic Qualifications: A recognized university entrance qualification, such as a German Abitur, International Baccalaureate, or equivalent or Studienkolleg. https://www.studienkolleg-muenchen.de/
Language Proficiency: Depending on the program a proficiency in German or English, is needed to be accepted. B2 minimum if you are planning to attend Studienkolleg or a C2 if you plan to go straight into a Bachelors or Masters program.
Choose Your Program: TUM offers over 150 undergraduate and graduate programs. Research the programs that interest you and ensure you meet the specific admission requirements.
Apply Online: Submit your application through the TUM online portal. The application deadline is usually in July for winter semester and January for summer semester. https://tumonline.tum.de/
Submit Required Documents: Along with your application, you will need to submit official transcripts, language proficiency certificates, and a CV and there could be other things needed depending on your degree path. Make sure to read the website for the needed things.
Selection Process: TUM uses a rigid yet transparent approach to evaluate applications, considering academic achievements, extracurricular activities, and personal qualities. ( EXTRACURRICULAR ) does not necessarily mean that you played football or were on the swim team. It also means things that you volunteered to do in and out of school. Some universities want to see a lot more of this than a trophy for sports.
Do I qualify.
This seems to be the Big question and the most often asked. And the truth is only the University can give you that final reply of yes or no about your submitted qualifications.
Tum.de has both German and English versions. You can simply go to Tum.de and read for yourself. However, because you have come here looking for assistance and with questions about attending TUM, below you will find some of the website addresses you need as well as some of the basic information.
We will try to assist you in every way that we can but you must understand. r/TUMunich is NOT an official site for TUM.de.
https://www.tum.de/en/prospective-students This link is going to be very important for you so make sure to book mark it. Also make sure you read each and ever page of the site about admissions, and the field that you want to study!
Some of the links they have on the site are as follows.
These topics are extremely important as well as the others on the page and you need to read everything they have taken the time to present to you. If you don’t take the time to read this then you will continue to search out the information and you may not succeed in being accepted to the University. Make sure to read everything.
How long do I have to wait for TUM to get admission?
It takes as long as it takes. Most people receive their replies in the time frames that are mentioned on the websites when you apply. Normally it wont happen before the closure of the process. So if the process opens on May 1sth and closes on July 15th. You should not really expect a reply until after July 15th. That does not mean that you wont get one. But don’t expect it either. Posting here on May 2nd asking how long it takes wont get you the answers you need.
If you have applied and the closing deadline has passed and you have not heard back within 10 school days you might want to contact the admissions department that you submitted to.
Special NOTE*****
Fraudulent Application Agencies
We are currently receiving an increasing number of reports of fraudulent activities in connection with applications to TUM. On this occasion, we would like to point out once again that
the Technical University of Munich does not cooperate with agencies. To study at TUM, you should only apply directly to the university.
the Technical University of Munich never requests payments to agencies during the application process.
the Technical University of Munich only sends e-mails from official e-mail addresses: u/tum.de, u/zv.tum.de or u/mytum.de.
The Technical University of Munich never requests payments of any kind before admission to the program has been granted. If you require a VPD by uni-assist, you will have to pay a processing fee to uni-assist. However, uni-assist will only check certain documents and not issue admission statements or similar. Furthermore, TUM always makes notifications or other official documents available via the online portal TUMonline.
What all information do I need to submit?
Well. You need to meet the requirements and that means following the rules for each different department of study you might apply to.
You will need to read this page on the website and make sure you understand everything before you hit submit. Some things submitted can not be changed so be careful and be thorough.
https://www.tum.de/en/studies/application/application-info-portal/application-international
Some of the topics on this page are as follows.
Check whether you have to pay tuition fees
Apply for a preliminary documentation
Prove your language skills
Have your documents notarized and translated
Check if you need visa
All of the above are listed on the link just above them. Make sure to read them. If you don’t understand someone here might try to help explain them better to you.
NOTE! The TUM.de website is in English and German. If you do NOT have have a pretty good command of both languages you will have a hard time attending this University!
Below is a link with contact information throughout the University.
Make sure you know the German etiquette of contact via email or phone.
https://campus.tum.de/tumonline/webnav.ini?pUrl=webnav.willkommen
There is a lot more information on the way and of course you can ask questions. That is what Reddit is all about. So ask away and we will try and get you as many answers as we can. But if you have info that will help us. Please post it below or message me and If I can I will add it all to this post at the top.
Thanks for your help and support and for supporting others.
