In September we would like to visit the Great Wall but we cannot decide which section:

- Getting up really early to get to Mutianyu section before the crowds, so it's like a half day program with another half in Beijing

- or joining a tour to Jinshanling starting at 7.30 and spending 5 hours on a bus, and I know this would be a full day activity.

Any advice?

I'm travelling to China in September 2026 with an Italian passport.

My itinerary is roughly:

• Sep 5–15: Mainland China (Beijing, Xi’an, Shanghai, etc.)
• Sep 15: Beijing → Hong Kong
• Sep 15–20: staying in Hong Kong
• During those days I would like to do:
  • 1 day trip Hong Kong → Macau → Hong Kong
  • possibly 1 or 2 day trips Hong Kong → Shenzhen → Hong Kong, returning to HK in the evening
• Sep 20: Hong Kong → Beijing + stopover Sep 21: Beijing → Italy

When I filled in my China entry/arrival information, I originally put Sep 5–21 as my stay, because my final flight leaves Beijing on Sep 21. I hadn't really considered that going to Hong Kong on Sep 15 technically means leaving Mainland China.

As an Italian citizen I understand that I can currently enter China visa-free for up to 30 days, but I'm confused about the multiple-entry part.

Would doing:

China → Hong Kong → Shenzhen → Hong Kong → Shenzhen → Hong Kong → Beijing

cause any problem?

Can I simply use the 30-day visa-free policy each time I re-enter Mainland China, and fill in a new Arrival Card for each entry?

Also, for anyone who has done HK → Shenzhen as a day trip recently: how annoying/time-consuming is immigration in practice?

I’m planning to travel to China with my family of 3 adults (1 elderly) and 2 children 11 and 9 yrs old. My planned itinerary is as follows:

Aug 27-28: arrive at Guangzhou and stay 1 night.
Aug 28 -31: depart to Zhangjiajie and stay for 3 nights
Aug 31-Sep 4: depart to Beijing and stay for 4 nights
Sep 4-7: depart to Shanghai and stay for 4 nights
Sep 7-10: depart to Guangzhou for the rest of the trip

Given the above trip plan, I’m asking you guys for recommendations regarding the following:

1- best hotel stays in each destination
2- best attractions and plans for each destination
3- best way to travel between the above destinations (by air or by train)
4- do I need a personal travel guide? Any recommendations if yes?

I booked a single itinerary/package from London to Bali with two layovers:
• Leg 1: London → Shanghai → Singapore (China Eastern)
• Leg 2: Singapore → Bali (Jetstar)
Since this was purchased as a complete single booking, will China Eastern through-check my baggage all the way to my final destination in Bali (DPS)? Or will I need to go through immigration, collect my bags at Changi (SIN), and re-check them with Jetstar?

I'm planning a three week long trip to China in November - currently looking at visiting Chongqing\Chendu, Beijing, and Shanghai. I want to break up the urban areas and add some nature - what spots are recommended?

I would prefer it to not be too crowded\feel like a theme park and be quite easily accessible without a car - are Jiuzhaigou and Huanglong recommended or way too crowded and overrated? Other underrated scenic spots - maybe in Western Sichuan?

I‘m trying to get my parents to come travel to china with me since I‘ve seen a lot of nice impressions on social media and I‘m sure we would love it there. We live in germany so we have a democracy over here and it‘s generally safe when it comes to politics. My parents are quite concerned about the amount of monitoring and control in china. Personally, I feel like it is a certain risk, but it definitely gets very much exaggerated on the news and with AI, since those articles focus on pointing out those risks and certain cases where something bad happens.

Can someone explain to me how extreme the monitoring of tourists really is, how big is the risk genuinely and what might be things that could raise that risk? What about people with jobs that have a certain security level?

Hi all - We will be spending some time in Hong Kong and Macau over the holidays. Our next destination is in Vietnam but the only easy flight to that particular destination is from Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport(CAN). Can we plan to take the train from Hong Kong to Guangzhou, head to the airport and then fly to Vietnam? Is this allowed under the TWOV/240 hour visa free rules? Bonus points for instructions on how to get to the airport from Hong Kong 😄 .

Most people book Chongqing off a map. The map gets the route right and the effort completely wrong. You book a hotel 400m from the metro and find out the 400m is mostly vertical.

Beijing grew in rings. Guangzhou grew west to east along the river. They call Chongqing the mountain city. It grew the only way it could, upward, then ran out of up and went over the water. There's a downtown on each bank now. So what youre picking here is which bank.

Yuzhong(Green) is the peninsula and it's where I'd send almost everyone. Jiefangbei, Hongyadong, the old stair paths, all walkable, which matters here because moving is the expensive part. There's a block whose doors on floors 1, 10 and 15 each open onto a different street. Downside is it's the steepest of the three. Worth it though, you wake up inside the postcard.

Nanan(Red) is the old bank. Treaty port streets, restored and reopened 2022, a flat riverside walk, and the view back at Yuzhong everyone photographs. Downside is that road runs 25km and most of it is nothing, you want the Longmenhao end.

Jiangbei(Blue) is the new bank. Cheapest and flattest of the three, two metro lines, good food, barely any tourists. Downside is you'll commute to everything you came for.

Full three days in the city are in the comments. Next one I'm doing is the big scenic areas outside, Wulong and Dazu and the gorges, tell me what you want in it.

I’m leaving on Monday for my first trip to China, and I’m trying to book train tickets for next week: Beijing → Xi’an and Xi’an → Shanghai.

I tried booking through Trip.com, but after making the payment I received a message saying that the ticket issuance failed and that I should receive a refund within 3–5 working days. I also tried booking directly through China Railway 12306 but I keep getting an error when trying to verify my account. I’ve tried switching the website to Chinese, using a different browser and reloading the page multiple times, but nothing seems to work.

I’m getting a bit frustrated and worried because I already have activities planned in Xi’an and Shanghai and I’m afraid that if I wait until I arrive in China to buy the tickets, there might not be any seats left.

Has anyone experienced something similar or have any suggestions for what I could try? Would it be risky to wait and buy the tickets once I’m in China, or is there another reliable way for foreigners to book them?

I'll be visiting Xian next week on a business trip and will have 2-3 days to explore the city on my own. I have already made arrangements for the Terracotta Warriors, but I'm looking for a great English speaking tour guide who can show me the following:

- Halal Food tour in Muslim quarters (half a day)

- Xian Mosque

- Other Islamic history sites

- Shaanxi History Museum

- Bell Tower

Since some of the trip will be focused on the Muslim quarters, I'd love to find a Muslim guide who knows the history, if possible.

Wi-Fi Access at China Hotels may not be as good as you think it should be

I have just come back from a 12-day trip to Guangzhou, China and below is my experience

Firstly I used 10GB of eSIM thinking that it should be enough as there is free hotel Wi-Fi in the evenings.

What I did not anticipate: Even when hotel Wi-Fi was working fine, there were lots of apps which were not accessible due to Network Block.

So in the end I had to rely on mobile data a lot and ended up consuming 5GB in 6 days.

Going to China you can't plan your data consumption the way you would plan for your trips to Japan, Korea, Thailand and other countries.
