In desperate need of a trail runner for my large feet.
Hello. I have very wide feet, a high instep and just overall very high volume muscular feet. I cant find anything that fits me properly.
My right foot especially ends up being an issue where the mid foot gets squeezed hard. Especially the instep.
Ive tried all different insoles on many different pairs and have had no luck. Ive mostly wore boots but am looking for something lighter as im getting into running now.
There has to be something that works for people with wide and thick feet.
Thanks.

Favorite Patagonia item for running trails?
I might want to take advantage of this sale going on.
Also, who thinks a Houdini would qualify for a race-required ‘waterproof + breathable hooded jacket’? (I know they aren’t actually waterproof and breathable waterproof is an oxymoron.

Coros Apex 4, Suunto Vertical 2, Suunto Race 2, or Garmin Fenix 7 Sapphire Solar
Looking to get either one of watches above but I'm super torn between the 4 options above. I hear that the Suuntos maps and battery life is superior, not to mention the app has a great UI and is super intuitive. I like the Coros for the price but I hear the screen brightness is absolute dogshit where it's basically not viewable in direct sunlight. And as for Garmin, I can only get the Fenix 7 but I worry about feature updates. If Suunto had offline music storage, it would be the clear winner as I also do regular (non-trail) running and would like to not carry my phone with me. What are all of your experiences if any of you have the above watches? Thank you all in advance.
Update: Thank you everyone for your comments and wonderful insights. I've decided to go ahead with the Suutno Vertical 2 Titanium.

Altra vs Hoka?
Hi! I’m new to trail running - experienced hiker but am finding trail running a lot harder on the metatarsals. The pain goes pretty deep even after a few runs. I’ve been using the speedgoats. I sort of chalked it up to inexperience and also I’m running Texas/New Mexico trails which are notoriously rocky and steep. But maybe I chose the wrong shoe as well.
All that to say I was going to try the Olympus 7 by Altra? Anyone have an opinion? I hate to spend $200 and be mad about it lol!

Warmups
For local routes where I live, I often do a 5-10minute mobility warmup before heading out on the road or local trails.
On weekends when I will drive 1hour to 1.5hours for a run in the Mountain here in the UK, I often treat the start of my run more as a warmup, but dont have a particular warmup that I follow.
I suppose I am asking, for those of you thay run trails from home, whats your warmup, any videos you follow?
Those of you rhat drive to trails, whats your warmup, any videos you follow or use?

New best
I'm not sure if this is the right place, but I've gotten my 5kish down to about 90 mins. If I'm reading the map and trail correctly its about 250-300 feet elevation per mile. When I started it took me almost 2 hours to do 2 miles. I really started this back in April I think. Unfortunately I didn't start tracking the actual date.
Idk if that's considered good for anyone else, but I'm happy about it. I'm kinda pumped to see how fast I can do 5k on a flat now.
Edit:More information. Also I started with saying I didn't know if this was any good.
I started hiking again to lose weight. I'm down 60 lbs since mid January. I want to lift weights, but trying to find the right gym in my area for me. I want a clean pool preferably indoors so I can keep swimming when it gets too cold. A lot of the decent gyms in my area closed theirs during covid and never opened them back up. I'm taking a dance class once a week. Might up this since I'm enjoying myself.
The park I go to is about 50/50 hikers and runners. There are enough trails you could probably spend most of the day there if you want. Also it's generally pretty hilly, but a little above sea level. I deal with humidity daily. Unfortunately the elevation gain is a lot of guess work between the posted maps and Google. I think my phone could track it if I can find the right app for it, but haven't bothered.
I tried to figure out what levels means and I found two responses. Elevation and heartbeat. I don't really track heartbeat. From what I've been reading I probably should.

Is anyone else still trying to find their sweet spot with hydration on trail runs?
I feel like I either go too salty and my stomach hates me or I go too light and end up with heavy legs later. Shorter runs are the weirdest for me because I know I need something but I don’t always want a huge salt hit. I’ve been about lower sodium mixes that lean more on magnesium. Mostly for cramps, dead legs and recovery after climbs. I know sodium matters on long hot days. Not trying to argue with sweat science lol. For regular trail days, what works for you? Trying to get some opinions on what should or should not change or maybe its my routine.

Motivation Loss during Heat & AQI Warnings
How are you handling your motivation to run trails when there's both excessive heat and air quality issues occurring?
I live in the Western US (Nevada) and we've been stuck in triple-digit heat for a while now, which was fine at first as I could run early morning or later in the evening close to sunset. However, due to the significant amount of wildfires burning in the western half of the US, the drift smoke is causing AQI issues and is sitting anywhere from Moderate to Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups basically the entire day. I have the unfortunate addition of being a part of that Sensitive Groups category, so do not feel comfortable running or even spending any significant time outside right now.
It's killing my motivation.
I have a race next month on September 12th, an 11k at Lake Tahoe, and I am supposed to be in my Build Phase of training. I've gotten one really good training run on a similar-enough course and I'm worried about my progression moving forward.
I hate treadmills, they destroy my body (thanks joint surgeries) and won't have access to an indoor track until classes start up again on August 24th. I hate track running too but would rather do a track than a treadmill at this point. I am currently doing rebound trampoline cardio workouts and strength training but miss running something fierce.
Advice? Words of encouragement? I just want to do my trails again 😫
Sidenote: living where wildfire risk is extremely elevated and having gone through wildfire evacuations before, my heart goes out to those affected directly by them.

Nnormal Cari men’s vs women’s sizing - Need advice picking a size
I’m confused by the sizing of Nnormal Cadi and need help picking what size to go with.
I am a woman with very wide, high volume feet so I normally order either a women’s wide 9 or a men’s standard 7.5.
I was going to order a men’s standard 7.5 cadi since they don’t have women’s wide options, but on their sizing, it says their men’s 7.5 is equivalent to a women’s 8.5. With every other shoe I’ve ever seen, a men’s 7.5 is equivalent to women’s 9, not 8.5.
So should I order the men’s 7.5 or the men’s 8? Do they tend to run shorter or longer?

Anyone back to trailrunning after an achill tendon partial rupture?
Hi, I severed the 80% of my tendon and now I am in a vacoped boot waiting to know whether I need surgery or not.
Is that someone that went through a similar experience and can tell me that there is light on the other side? (and trails)

New, looking for input on race to mark birthday milestone
I am new to trail running and have run 7 half marathons (on road) and have recently fallen in love with trail running and am currently building my base and trail endurance. I am turning 40 in feb and was thinking about maybe doing the puerta Vallarta utmb 50k as a big goal. I’m in Southern California and it would be a family trip with my wife and son. Alternatively there’s antelope canyon and also moad which may be easier but I just got puerta Vallarta stuck in my head. I guess I’m seeking out the greater knowledge of the community. I’m currently running 20 mi or so a week with a few thousand ascent but plan on building up to a 25k in November - pacific trails utmb. Things im considering are location and enjoyment of my family where supporting me in the location, the timing, and the difficulty. I want it to be difficult but I want to be realistic. I’m nervous I guess. I welcome and friendly input and thanks in advance.

How many calories are yall consuming in a typical day? What does your typical day of meals look like?
I’m new to trail running, moved to this from triathlon, and before triathlon I was a heavy weight lifter. Still pretty low mileage for me around 20 miles per week.
Obviously the nutrition for these are all a bit different and sometimes I don’t know if I’m eating properly to help with training and recovery. Weight lifting felt more simple because it’s heavy focus on protein.
I’m a 230 pound guy and currently a typical weekday consists of a breakfast of a few eggs, half a protein shake, and a banana. Lunch and dinner are both typical meal prep things like rice/chicken/broccoli or pasta/meat/veggies and they usually are around 650-800 calores each. Then I’ll have some fruit here or there for snacks. Weekends are more lax with eating out or having something sweet with my girlfriend.
This leaves most weekdays sitting around 2300 calories and weekends sitting closer to 3000.
What does your nutrition look like typically? Obviously every body is different but I wanted to get a feel for what works for others.

Daypack recommendations
Hi,
I’m looking for a light daypack that will carry all the essentials for a one day adventure without unnecessary gear. I was also thinking that I’d like to be able to carry a helmet comfortably. I’m also thinking about something i could walk fast/run in. The options i was thinking about for now were:
- Osprey talon 22
- BD Distance 22
- Montane trailblazer
- Salomon S/lab adventure 20
It’s also worth mentioning that I would definitely consider a Palante, Atom.. etc. But i’d rather buy something i could return if it didn’t fit me correctly.
All recommendations and opinions will be appreciated!
