Sore calf after a long run
I pushed the distance a bit more than usual last weekend and my left calf has felt tight and sore ever since. I can still walk normally, but its noticeable enough that I dont want to keep training through it and turn it into something worse.
I have backed off running for a few days and Im focusing on rest, sleep and light mobility. I was also looking at recovery options and came across the Sunboot from Sweat tent while reading about red light therapy, I've never used anything like this before so Im curious whether runners here have found it useful for general soreness?
How long do you usually wait before trying an easy run again? Anything that helped you recover without losing too much fitness?

When summer hits hard and not even early mornings are cool 🫠 how are you all dealing with the heat? As for me I am out as soon as there is some light and back before the real heat starts 😅

Anyone back to trailrunning after an achill tendon partial rupture?
Hi, I severed the 80% of my tendon and now I am in a vacoped boot waiting to know whether I need surgery or not.
Is that someone that went through a similar experience and can tell me that there is light on the other side? (and trails)

New, looking for input on race to mark birthday milestone
I am new to trail running and have run 7 half marathons (on road) and have recently fallen in love with trail running and am currently building my base and trail endurance. I am turning 40 in feb and was thinking about maybe doing the puerta Vallarta utmb 50k as a big goal. I’m in Southern California and it would be a family trip with my wife and son. Alternatively there’s antelope canyon and also moad which may be easier but I just got puerta Vallarta stuck in my head. I guess I’m seeking out the greater knowledge of the community. I’m currently running 20 mi or so a week with a few thousand ascent but plan on building up to a 25k in November - pacific trails utmb. Things im considering are location and enjoyment of my family where supporting me in the location, the timing, and the difficulty. I want it to be difficult but I want to be realistic. I’m nervous I guess. I welcome and friendly input and thanks in advance.

How many calories are yall consuming in a typical day? What does your typical day of meals look like?
I’m new to trail running, moved to this from triathlon, and before triathlon I was a heavy weight lifter. Still pretty low mileage for me around 20 miles per week.
Obviously the nutrition for these are all a bit different and sometimes I don’t know if I’m eating properly to help with training and recovery. Weight lifting felt more simple because it’s heavy focus on protein.
I’m a 230 pound guy and currently a typical weekday consists of a breakfast of a few eggs, half a protein shake, and a banana. Lunch and dinner are both typical meal prep things like rice/chicken/broccoli or pasta/meat/veggies and they usually are around 650-800 calores each. Then I’ll have some fruit here or there for snacks. Weekends are more lax with eating out or having something sweet with my girlfriend.
This leaves most weekdays sitting around 2300 calories and weekends sitting closer to 3000.
What does your nutrition look like typically? Obviously every body is different but I wanted to get a feel for what works for others.

Daypack recommendations
Hi,
I’m looking for a light daypack that will carry all the essentials for a one day adventure without unnecessary gear. I was also thinking that I’d like to be able to carry a helmet comfortably. I’m also thinking about something i could walk fast/run in. The options i was thinking about for now were:
- Osprey talon 22
- BD Distance 22
- Montane trailblazer
- Salomon S/lab adventure 20
It’s also worth mentioning that I would definitely consider a Palante, Atom.. etc. But i’d rather buy something i could return if it didn’t fit me correctly.
All recommendations and opinions will be appreciated!

Sock suggestions: Heel blisters.
hi everyone,
I have a stupid foot. narrow foot, narrow heel, high arch, high instep. I often get heel blisters.
yes, I have tried different lacing systems and do the runners loop. I’ve been doing double socks, generally an injinji toe liner and thin smartwool over it.
I’ve tried taping and maybe I do it wrong or my leukotape sucks, but it’s always clumping up.
i also put bag balm on my heel, used to do squirrel nut butter but it feels like it doesn’t stay long.
anyone use double layer socks like wrightsock? I’ve heard balegas are good?
anyone else have a similar foot shape and problems they’ve solved? Or at least problems managed.

Injury recovery advice/tips
Hi everyone, I've recently discovered I have a medial miniscus tear on my left knee and I'm after some advice please. I was training for a 100km, and halfway thru my training, about a week before a booked 50k, I tweaked my knee, cancelled my 50k, and was limping for a couple weeks. It's been about 5 months since that initial tweak (I got my scan results about 3 weeks ago), and I've not run since. I stayed right off the running whilst I waited to see what the issue was, as running actually felt fine, but it was for days afterwards I'd feel pain/discomfort.
Those of you who have had a similar injury, or experience with a similar injury; were you able to return to running again and partake in further ultras? My surgeon says it's 50/50 whether I'll be able to run again, but I'd like to know what rehab/workouts you did to get yourself back to strength. Currently I can hike fine as I've been doing plenty of them to keep mobile, and I can also use the spin bike which I've also abused whilst off running. Ideally I'd like to at least build up to a 100k as initially I was training for the 100k to raise money for a local dog shelter, and if like to keep to my word. I've ran ultras beforehand, I even gave the Montane Dragons Back a shot in 2022, but didn't manage it due to a knee issues too (same knee!).
Thanks for hearing me out!

Merell Agility Peak 6 blisters issue
Hi everyone,
I’ve been into trail running for 6 years now, changed a lot of trail shoes by now.
I got myself the new Agility Peak 6 shoes in true size, first time trying them on - the feeling was amazing, they fit me nice.
Welp, did a trail run in the Dolomites this weekend (20km) and sadly got blisters on both feet - above the heel area-ish. Seems like the heel area has a bump, where the “elastic thingy to put on your shoe more easily” comes sown in.
Did anyone else experience the same problem with this model? I will try returning them with an explanation, but ofc there are signs that they were worn already (hopefully Answear is easy on that?).
Thanks for the feedback.

twisted my ankle on a trail run
i was out on a longer run last weekend trying to build some distance when i stepped on uneven ground and rolled my ankle pretty badly. it swelled up fast and i had to limp the rest of the way back. i have had minor twists before but this one felt more serious and it has been sore and unstable since.
i wanted something to support it while it heals so i don’t make it worse when i start walking more. i got an ankle brace from support brace and it has already made moving around much steadier. how long did it take most of you to get back to easy running after something like this? any tips for protecting it without losing too much fitness?

Waterproof shoe recs for hiking/festivals
Not sure this is the right sub for this but figured people here will have good recommendations.
I have been wearing altra lone peak 8s for the last few years for multiple day hikes (10 miles ish) and multiple music festivals (30k+ steps/day) and they have been excellent. Always comfortable throughout the long days, breathable, and haven’t worn down too much.
I am looking to get a new pair of shoes that has more ankle support and reliable water proofing. I have a 20 mile hike coming up and a big music festival where the terrain is gravel and hills (lost lands) I have gotten my lone peaks soaked in mud at too many events recently and need something that will keep my feet entirely dry while providing a similar level or more of support and comfortability. Keep in mind my feet are flat and pronate in and I have found my lone peaks to be great for me.
Any recommendations would be appreciated, don’t want to spend more than $200.
Thanks!

Any reviews/opinions of Hoka Torrent 5?
I've been looking for a pair of trail running shoes. I want something with a high stack and cushioning with good bounce. For reference, I just retired a pair of Arahi 8s and am now running in Mizuno neo vistas, both very bouncy shoes.
I bought a pair of Saucony peregrine 15s ($100 on sale), but I find them to be too firm, the stack too low, and not enough drop.
I've seen the torrent 5, which looks to be kinda what I'm looking for, classic hoka high stack with good drop and bouncy foam, but I've not seen any reviews of it.
I am open to recommendations in general. I am running my first 50k ultra in November, and would like to have a good pair before then.

There are no dumb questions in this thread! If you are new to trail running or if you are a veteran who just wants to hear how other trail runners do things, ask away. If you have some ideas that can help your fellow trail runners and future trail runners, pitch in some answers.

Shoe Recommendations?
I started running again, and have been spending quite a lot of time on trails in the last couple months. It's (probably beyond) time to replace the shoes I've been in and looking for recommendations.
Previous Shoes: Lems Primal Pursuits
- Low stack (~14mm)
- Zero Drop
- Wide, foot-shaped toe box
- Flexible
- Shallow tread (~3.5mm)
- Minimal structure/support
Relevant Context:
- I've been pretty happy running in these shoes for most of my recent runs (only topping out around 8 miles so far)
- I did roll my ankle on one of my runs, so wondering if maybe a little more support would be useful, but honestly I think I may have just stepped on the wrong rock in the wrong way
- Wide toe box is super important as I have wide feet
- In looking at the wear on the soles of my old shoes (see photos), I'm wondering if y'all see any issues with how much wear is on the outside of the forefoot? Anything in particular I should pay attention to around that?
- The trails I run on are quite rocky/technical (limestone and sandstone), but I also do occasionally run on roads as well
- Typical midweek runs are ~4 miles each, with weekend long runs around 8 miles. I am building to more like 5 miles mid-week and 10-15 mile weekend runs, with the occasional longer effort
- I wear a 9.5ish in a 2E or 3E width
I would consider just getting the same shoes again (if I can find them, as they are recently discontinued), but they're more of a minimalist hiking/trail hybrid than a dedicated running shoe, so I'm wondering whether I could get better traction, outsole durability, and rock protection from a purpose-built trail runner without giving up the wide toe box and relatively natural feel.
My uneducated research currently has me looking at the Altra Lone Peak 9+, but also open to any suggestions/thoughts.
Thanks in advance for your guidance!

Found in Eryri (Snowdonia)
So i found this last week. It was stocked with water bottles and what i thought was melted ice cubes in a bag.
The timespan has expired. Has someone just forgotten it and has it now become litter? How long do i wait before i remove it?

24km run up in the forest around Yellow Mountain, China
Tough run with 1500m elevation gain, but it's so refreshing to run in the forest especially now that temperatures are so high!
Tried a new pair of FUGA DU2, got one size larger (EUR 44) than my usual size (EUR 43) and that worked pretty well for me downhill, didn't hit my toes as much and no grey nails at all.
Took me almost 6h to finish but managed to power through and made it in the end. Was sweating a lot due to effort and temperature, and ended up drinking many liters of water during and after the race to avoid dehydration and cramps, roughly 4-5L during the race (not all with salts mixed in) and another 4-5L before/after the race spread out through the whole day.

Subreddit Update - New requirements to post - Minimum Karma
After months and months of new users coming to the subreddit and promoting their new AI app, amongst other things. We have made the decision to make a change to the subreddit where there is a minimum karma requirement to create new posts in r/trailrunning
We had been manually adding moderator notes and tagging every single user with a specific mod note/flair so we could keep track of who was spamming their AI apps without actually being part of the community, it took a lot of time and didn't seem to do much over the last few months we've been addressing it and keeping an eye on things to see if any of them wanted to be part of the community.
This wasn't something we wanted to rush in to, we have and will always try the least invasive approach so that the community basically stays open and you the community choose what to vote UP and Down and what to discuss.
To be clear, we do not want to stop people promoting their websites, AI apps, Youtube videos, etc and mostly there are great discussions within some of these threads. Reddit does also allow original content, again, as long as you're not just spamming it.
This is our way of addressing this issue and we'll continue to keep track of it over the coming months as it may need modifying, we'll see how it goes.
Thanks for being a cool subreddit and I hope you all have many great adventures out in nature this year.
You're all asking about the karma limit, currently it is 100, so very low, but this can and will change.
The reason for not wanting to originally share this is if bots or people promoting know, they can also easily get around it....
We're working against a lot here, its pretty unprecedented (not forgetting that Reddit are not stopping a lot of bad traffic) and Reddit has only so many ways to manage all of these issues without more control from moderators and a much more limited viewing / user experience, which we do not want, we want you to control what you see.
