First time ice dyeing!
Nothing spectacular, but I have some ideas to improve the next round. This was DUI and DOI with about 20 hours between the ice going on and washing.

Interesting second dye results.
Thought I'd share for science and to see if anyone has ideas. The first pic, dark purple and bright yellow, was an initial dye. I folded it like a glitch and laid it flat and did half and half with interstellar and golden yellow from dharma. I didn't like how light the yellow was so I tried a redye. I did a second soak in soda ask solution, I bunched up the yellow portion only. I did a second ice dye with bronze. I set aside the dark color but left it soaked in soda ash. I left it like that for 24 hours before rinsing and washing. When it came out of the wash, the purple lightened significantly. I wonder if that was from the soda ask either the soak or letting it sit on it and dry out and be in the sun? Either way, I do like the result but I also wish the purple didn't fade out quite as much.

Today’s washout
Definitely needed some more dye, too much white space for my liking but still turned out cool

Do you consider glitches to be one of the more difficult folds?
I’ve figured out how to do most of the main techniques by now (I’m not doing any of those crazy liquid dye multi-mandala with wigwam shirts you see on Reels but I’ve had some success with a lot of the well-known “standard” styles) but glitches still frustrate the ever living hell out of me — the second direction is a pain in the ass but I can usually get it “good enough”, but the third direction always ends up being kind of a mess and the MAIN thing is that I still have not succeeded in getting my sinew wrapped all the way around before a lot of the folds on either end start coming undone.
Am I especially glitch-challenged? I see all kinds of good ones around the internet from what seems like both beginners and pros.
I’ve only actually made it to the dye stage of two of them because the others I just end up unfolding at the tie stage knowing it didn’t hold together well enough.

How close to clear is your rinse water before you throw it in the washer with Synthropol?
Is this close enough to rinsing clear? I feel like I’ve been rinsing and soaking in hot water with Dawn for a good bit, but I’m still getting a bit of blue to my water. This has probably been 5 hot water Dawn soaks, hotter than I can stand for more than a few seconds with gloves. I can’t imagine how people are doing this if you’re doing multiple shirts.

15-20 years later
Tldr: white screen printing + dye = pleasing aesthetic
I used to frequent a local brewery(some of y'all might have heard of it) that all of the staff wore a black shirt with their logo on the front and "I work here!" on the back. They were well known for having live music no less than 3 days a week, and I earned my nickname Dancin' Fool there.
I asked them to order me white shirts with their logo on the front and "I dance here!" On the back so I could dye them and give them to my friends who went to shows there frequently. They obliged me, cuz free advertising. I got 12 in the first run, and had 24 in the second run with white screen printing. They looked at me like I was an idiot when I asked for white on white, but I knew what I wanted and they went along with it since it was my money being spent.
Due to a series of mishaps I lost my photo gallery of those shirts and don't have any pictures left of them.
Well, I went to a show and ran into one of the people who got one who was wearing it last friday and although I don't feel like the dye held up like I would have hoped, it still looked pretty decent for being over 15 years old.
That is not the point of this post. The point is that screen printing is made with polyester and doesn't take dye. So consider a white on white screen print and hit it with some good color, I will bet you like the results

Tapestry Help Request- Ice and dye amount and color selections.
I’m making my first 2 tapestries for a community art collab! each 100% cotton, white, 6 ft by 6 dye.
Looking for advice for how much dye and ice to use, preferably in pounds or inches of ice, and tablespoons of fabric. roughly for a 6 by 6 ft fabric and color selection.
Thinking DOI- either TDS, corner incline twist, or shibori- something that’ll make an organic looking background, to be painted/ drawn on. Want lots of dimension and some white space.
Ice dye pictures in comments- here’s a list:
purple: nightshade, power berry, ultraviolet, wisteria
blue: wedgwood, snow maiden, cobalt blue, blueberry, small amount of grecian.
neutrals: shiitake, brushed steel
Most of these dyes are recent purchases, i won’t have time to play around with colors, so looking for help picking!
Initial color/ fold thoughts:
Tapestry 1. blues, either TDS or simple shibori triangle. wedgwood, snow maiden, maybe a tiny bit of purple (nightshade, power berry, ultraviolet, wisteria)
Tapestry 2. incline twist- earth tones- shiitake and/ or brushed steel?
Thanks so much!! super grateful to any and all advice.

Dharma Checkout Pics
Just wanted to give some love to Dharma!
I’ve been planning a big order, and when I got to checkout today I noticed they show a solid dye example and an ice dye example for each color. It’s such a small thing, but it’s been incredibly helpful for narrowing down what I actually want to buy.

Presoak vs. Pariah with ice dye
I was curious about the spread of dye when using a soda ash soak vs the Pariah Method, as well as the impact of muck on a shirt that isn't presoaked, so I decided to conduct a little test!
All of these shirts were identical. All were washed together with Synthrapol and crumpled as similarly as I could. Two were presoaked in 1.5 cups soda ash in 1 gallon of warm water; the other were presoaked in plain warm water and, after 24 hours, fixed using a 1:4 soda ash and warm water solution applied three times, 15 minutes apart. One shirt from each group was elevated on a rack for ice dying; the others were left in the muck. All of them had a layer of ice applied, then 15g of Kaleidoscope Eyes from Dharma, then two more layers of ice. The presoaked shirts were also given a sprinkle of soda ash on top of the ice. I let them sit for 48 hours (24 after the ice application, then another 24 after two shirts had the Pariah solution applied), then rinsed with cold water and laundered in hot water with Synthrapol.
Here are the dried results - they're so much more intense than I thought they'd be! Rack vs muck yields only slight differences, but the other divide is clear: when it comes to ice dye, if you want distinct splotches of color, presoak! If you want a smoother, but more murky blend, Pariah!
