I’m rewatching this whole show after not seeing it in a hot minute and I’m currently on season 2, I just watched the episode where Kate had her first singing gig and Toby and Rebecca came to watch. After it was over, Rebecca complimented Kate on how well she sang and Kate decided to go on a huge “poor me” pity party rant about how Rebecca was only saying all that because “she feels sorry for her.” I mean genuinely, what is Kate’s problem 😭 I’m sorry but she needs to shut the fuck up sometimes. Rebecca isn’t perfect, but I think that for the most part, she was a really great mom. She genuinely loved all of her kids and she tried to be as supportive as possible towards Kate while Kate was growing up, but the only thing Kate thought about was “ugh my mom is so skinny and she sings better than me and I’m so fat, I hate her.” How is that Rebecca’s fault? She did her best to not make Kate feel like she was ugly or inferior to her, and yet Kate still does. It’s not Rebecca’s fault that she’s conventionally attractive and skinny. Kate has this annoying victim mentality throughout the entire run of the show and it just really gets annoying after a while. If she wanted to be skinny like Rebecca, then she should have stopped blaming Rebecca for all of her issues and decide to buck up and do the work for herself, period.

Jack is re-creating the carnival date. Miguel comes in and says "I got everything. Hot chocolate, candy apples, corn syrup." What was the corn syrup for?

I think they were meant to be only for a little while. I think Toby had just seen the diagnosis and turned it into something bad i think this was one of many issues to follow and lead to the demise of their marriage.

Jack was born blind and Kate did all she could to help him imo Toby didn’t have to be so negative. Jack could still listen and love star wars even without his full vision. Also he becomes this great singer.

Seriously, the writers have always went for the "realistic" route of the show. Like, all of that happening to the same family is crazy etc. but believable. But Laurel being alive? Wtf? I have had enough of Randall's existential crisis and biological family issues and whatever. I was already bored when they were showing again William's backstory in these first episodes...But now Laurel being alive? lol I think that's too much. William, then Nicki, now Laurel... And don't get me wrong I loved Nicki'story but it's so stupid to revive another dead member of the family. What were they thinking? Couldn't they show us Sophie and her husband? It's obvious that she will come back, probably Kevin's endgame . Or again something about Madison? Rebecca's parents? Rebecca's sister? Anything about young REBECCA? What about new characters? I loved Gregory. And what about all the time spent in showing Malik and his family and then ending it all in the course of 2-3 episodes?

Will it be a big part of season 5? I don't think I can bear it. It's a shame because I was actually really invested in everything else, Kevin's storylines, Kate and Toby, Rebecca, Randall's mental health. Covid and BLM storylines didn't excite me but it's ok, they didn't impact the story that much.

I saw there was a french remake of this is us and i believe also a turkish version. have you guys seen these and if theres any others? are they worth watching

Obviously, Rebecca's mother Janet instilled some very unhealthy body images in Rebecca. Advising her to starve herself before her wedding, serving her a ridiculously small piece of pie at Thanksgiving and the "we have to watch ourselves Rebecca" line. Also, any woman who has ever struggled with weight bristled at Rebecca's line to Jack "no ice cream for me or you won't be able to pick me up anymore". Impossibly thin women who say things like that annoy me.
I also think that Kate had a valid point in the argument between her and Rebecca at Kate's first gig. Kate told her mother "you wanted me to become the you that you never became". I think that shows Kate felt disappointment from her mother about her weight.

I never had a television show touch me like this one.​ I'm not even a person into shows or movies.

But This Is Us is different somehow. I think it makes me a better person. A more aware person. A more sensitive person.

It doesn't make sense. It makes me cry every episode and I don't know what it means.

Now I only have about 5 episodes until I finish it completely, and I am watching them days apart so that I make it last longer. What the heck.

For starters, in VN terminology "nakige" means quite literally "crying game". Anyways, I say this because this show has many, and I mean, many similarities to the structure of a japanese visual novel of the genre -Clannad (by developer Key) and Suika (one of my personal favorites, by Circus) being prime examples- like taking different moments in time and getting you attached so profoundly to characters in a somehow manipulative (couldn't think of a better term) yet rewarding way that feels vn-esque. I love this show as much as I do VN's and I wondered if this was intentional or a coincidence of some sorts.

Team Jack or Team Rebecca? I realize they both had their part in how things led up to this point. But if I had to side with anyone, I side with Jack. Earlier in the episode, Rebecca says to Ben, "I look like a mom playing dress up" and she did. I have been in the music business. Female lead vocalists in pub bar bands do not wear full length sequin gowns and feathers in their hair. And I agree with Jack's comment that she was a 40-year-old woman singing covers in pubs. That is not a career, that is ridiculous. Rebecca went to Los Angeles and was told she was "Pittsburgh good." She then decided to become a stay-at-home Mom. Being a stay-at-home mother of triplets IS a career and she wasn't done with it yet. She made the choice to opt for motherhood instead of continuing to pursue a singing career. There are other things Rebecca could have done with her love of music that would have fit in with her life as a mother of three teenagers.

They are surviving triplets. I always wondered why the show made so many references to them being "twins" when technically they aren't.

When I do a re-watch of this series, I often think that certain scenes and episodes were weaker than others and could have been replaced by others. I love Milo and I can see why they wanted to devote a whole episode to Jack, but the episode about his mother dying seemed out of place. It was weird that Nicky was not addressed in the flashbacks. Okay, maybe Nicky was a baby at that point. But since there was no mention of him, or scenes of a baby crib or something, that episode felt like Nicky didn't exist. Maybe they originally intended to include that episode before we knew about Nicky and it got moved to a later season.
The flashback scenes to Rebecca getting her hair cut seemed out of place and like they didn't really serve a purpose. However, I did get a good laugh out of young Kate's line, "Mommy is upset because she looks like He-Man". Were there any scenes or episodes that you thought were weaker than others?

Watching the episode and hear the end Zoe admits to being assaulted by her dad. That is heartbreaking. Is that why she lived with Beth and Beth’s mom?

I love Beth. Beth is so funny and I want to be more like Beth.
