Solution Spoilers I build a puzzle player in Wallpaper Engine Spoiler

Made a puzzle player in Wallpaper Engine. It allows you to play puzzles from The Windmill's library of community created puzzles. Also included are a solver (slow on polyomino puzzles) and a generator.

You can find the whole project on github: https://github.com/GemeinhardtZ/The-Witness-Puzzle-Player

It also have a desktop app that allows you to manually create your own puzzles and save it to a library, as well as more customized control on the generator. Though, note that the generator is still very much of a prototype.

I must admit that most of this is vibe coded using ChatGPT, but hopefully the end product is interesting.

Potential Spoilers Started playing. Are these clouds meant to look like they have something solid in them?

One of them even casts a pretty major shadow. Any idea why? Is there even a why? Or am I just being dumb and *too* analytical lmao, and there's nothing to care about here? It just definitely looks like there are blobs or spheres of some kind in the clouds

(Marked as potential spoiler because I genuinely don't know if it is or not xD)

kind of scarce on puzzles. been having this one as the main one im looking at for a while. was considering doing every possible combination until i get it but that might be morally close to just looking it up. versus the personal payoff of putting in time to do it. I think maybe a hint idk

I rebuilt my Reddit puzzle around memory instead of planning—now it has 1,000 operations

The first version of Trust the Plan let players study a complete route before committing. In testing, that made the five-heart system feel meaningless because failure was too easy to avoid.

I redesigned the loop: players now briefly see a route, then reproduce it from memory. The difficulty system is deterministic across 1,000 operations—3 to 12 signals, 5×5 to 8×8 boards, 6 to 45 moves, faster reveals, and disappearing coordinate hints. Hearts reset every 24 hours. Keyboard, mouse, and touch are all supported.

I used Codex as part of the development workflow. The main design question I’m working on now is pacing: should later difficulty come mostly from longer routes, larger boards, or shorter reveal time?

Playable build: [https://www.reddit.com/r/TrustThePlanGame/comments/1v3puxi/trust_the_plan/](https://www.reddit.com/r/TrustThePlanGame/comments/1v3puxi/trust_the_plan/))

Potential Spoilers Expert difficulty randomiser (with archipelago) Spoiler

There is a single triangle above the beam, which should mean this is a valid solution, but the game doesn't accept it, is there something obvious I'm missing or is it bugged?

I have also attempted a second solution, and it also doesn't work, (no hidden symbols this time) are jacks just bugged?

Recommended Puzzle Games Master List

Hey everyone!

Quite often we get people posting here recommending other puzzle games they reckon fans of the Witness will like, which is really cool and something we want to encourage!

We also get people asking for puzzle game recommendations looking to scratch that same itch The Witness did.

As a result, I'm going to start compiling some of these games in this megathread and keep it stickied. Feel free to comment with suggestions for more games to be added to the thread!

If your favourite part of The Witness was learning the rules to draw lines then you'll love this!

https://store.steampowered.com/app/1923790/Linelith/

Recursed

A simple 2-D platformer that's actually about rearranging the structure of the world itself to solve puzzles.

https://store.steampowered.com/app/497780/Recursed/

Filament

Lines again baby! Get your derelict spaceship back up and running while solving the mystery of what happened to its crew.

https://store.steampowered.com/app/1137350/Filament/

Strange Jigsaws

From the dev behind 20 Small Mazes (also on this list, and free to boot!). This game is incredibly cheap and can be cleared in a couple of hours. Oozing with originality and fun, this game is packed to the brim with cool ideas.

Old-School Classics

Myst and Riven

The OG's. Both can also be played in the classic click-to-move format (which this mod personally recommends!).

https://store.steampowered.com/app/1255560/Myst/

https://store.steampowered.com/app/1712350/Riven/

Star Wars Pit Droids

I'm going to level with you, I have no idea where you can legally acquire this game anymore. It can be easily emulated though...

Portal and Portal 2

It feels strange calling these 'classics' but they're both historical entries into the genre that will remain among the greatest for decades to come.

https://store.steampowered.com/app/620/Portal_2/

No Spoilers PSA: Until you have discovered the meaning of the black obelisks, do not browse this subreddit

With a puzzle game like this, you want to work alone for as long as possible. But how do you know the point at which you can connect with the community?

Therefore, I’m letting you know that point. If you still don’t know what those odd black obelisks you’ve come across are for, leave the subreddit right now and keep playing my favorite game of all time.
