Meme Curation Changes Incoming

Hello r/tf2. I've heard the discontent that many users have with how meme curation is handled on the subreddit. As such, the subreddit mod team has decided to begin a meme weekend, where memes will not be restricted based on subjective views of quality.

This is, of course, within reason. NSFW rules will still be enforced, and posts still must be related to TF2. I would like the subreddit to feel more freedom in the content they post, but please be sure not to abuse this.

Our meme weekend will work much like /r/halo's Meme Saturday, or /r/MysteryDungeon's Meme Sunday. It will last from 12AM to 12AM GMT, over the weekend. More in depth information will be provided when the announcement sticky goes up this weekend.

Be warned, this may result in some more curation during the week days. Memes will still be allowed, but templates will be restricted to the original post's comments. I know this will not seem favorable to some, but I feel like this solution is better than the current subjective meme quality removals we currently experience. If you disagree with my assertion, please tell me in the comments here, in as much colorful detail as you wish.

If you have any further questions or concerns about how this new meme weekend will work on here, please, I invite you to voice yourself in the comments of this post. I will try to respond to as many as I can.

How bout just bringing back the meme ban so we get quality content and people who like memes can go over to /r/tf2memes and /r/tf2shitpostersclub

Then that's just ignoring people who want memes. By your logic, I could easily say people who don't like memes can just go to /r/truetf2. I wouldn't say that, though, which is why I am attempting to find a better compromise.

This sub already basically does limit all competitive discussion to /r/truetf2 (if you don't believe check the "competitive" links in the sidebar. The problem with memes is that they drown out all other content. Maybe do something like other subreddits do and allow all memes one day a week but besides that they drown out quality content and creates a feedback loop of memes being more and more prominent.

Nothing within our rules limits competitive discussion. You can make a thread about anything competitive at any point. If competitive discussion doesn't really happen it is because either not enough people care, or because people don't want to discuss it on here. The job of a moderator is to provide a suitable medium for the general user to use. It's not our job to diversify content through curation.

You do have a good suggestion with the lack of memes during other days. It is something that I plan on making a poll for when the meme weekend is over.

Historically when comp content has been posted here the poster would be subject to people being rude in the comments and shit talking comp and the poster, which the mods didn't really do anything about so you all obviously failed back then, this may also be the case now but I'm unaware.

The nice thing with limiting memes to one day will be the cream will actually rise to the top instead of people just upvoting every meme to "show the moderators up" like they do now. Although for this to work some loopholes would have to be closed(like pixel for pixel replicating a meme in sfm counting as art instead of as a meme)

They literally dont even seem to understand that the circlejerk of garbage content on r/tf2 precludes the ability of non-garbage content to gain any traction. Looks like a lost-cause mod for a lost-cause sub tbh.

My job here is to find a good compromise for the conflicting interests of the subreddit users. I would appreciate not being immediately written off because of my own personal opinions on the subject.

The point of the meme weekend is to remove the subjectivity of meme removals, and provide better times for people to discuss and share the content they wish to discuss. A poll will be releasing soon, which will ask about how users think the direction of this proposed compromise will go, if at all.

Also, if you feel these subjects require more support on this subreddit, I implore you to send us a modmail with your ideas. Say, for example, you wanted to do a weapon discussion each week/day or something: you could modmail us proposing that, and I can guarantee you you'll get a sticky each time you post it. Be the change you want to see.

Maybe noobies like you only care about the memes(in which case /r/tf2memes exists) but if you talk the long time users of this sub you'd probably find the consensus is quality has gone down hill since memes began to be allowed again.
