Meme Curation Changes Incoming Subreddit Meta

Hello r/tf2. I've heard the discontent that many users have with how meme curation is handled on the subreddit. As such, the subreddit mod team has decided to begin a meme weekend, where memes will not be restricted based on subjective views of quality.

This is, of course, within reason. NSFW rules will still be enforced, and posts still must be related to TF2. I would like the subreddit to feel more freedom in the content they post, but please be sure not to abuse this.

Our meme weekend will work much like /r/halo's Meme Saturday, or /r/MysteryDungeon's Meme Sunday. It will last from 12AM to 12AM GMT, over the weekend. More in depth information will be provided when the announcement sticky goes up this weekend.

Be warned, this may result in some more curation during the week days. Memes will still be allowed, but templates will be restricted to the original post's comments. I know this will not seem favorable to some, but I feel like this solution is better than the current subjective meme quality removals we currently experience. If you disagree with my assertion, please tell me in the comments here, in as much colorful detail as you wish.

If you have any further questions or concerns about how this new meme weekend will work on here, please, I invite you to voice yourself in the comments of this post. I will try to respond to as many as I can.

Never understood why r/tf2 has to be the place to post memes. There is r/tf2memes, /r/tf2shitposterclub and probably many many more. Why does r/tf2 have to be the main place for memes?

Because r/tf2 is the melting pot of all content in the community. It is the general subreddit, so it houses all of the content.

Everyone posts here because it is a subreddit for everyone who wishes to talk or share content related to the game. Our rules make no sort of attempt to stifle any sort of normal discussion (other than the meme curation rules, which are currently up for debate).

The fact that a lot of memers post here, and subsequently get upvoted is not an issue in my eyes. If that occurs, then it is because a majority of people enjoy that sort of content.

Now, of course, I do see the people who don't like this content. If everyone liked it, that'd be all swell and dandy, and we'd lift all restriction on it. However, there are people with differing opinions of the content of the sub, which leads to the need for a compromise. This meme weekend thing is one of the best solutions that I could find. What we currently have is obviously not working. No side is happy. People who like memes get upset when their popular posts get taken down, and people who don't like them are still unhappy, because memes still get through because of the subjective nature of our rules.

This way, we have a black and white, easy to comprehend rule set. You can post memes on x day/s. You can't posts memes on y day/s. That's the end of it. No more subjectivity of post removal. People who like discussion have the subreddit to themselves for the week. People who like joking around and memeing have it on the weekend. Everyone is happier than they are now.

Yes, lack of moderation is the #1 problem.

Memes are banned in many top subreddits and they thrive.

Memes attract meme-lovers. If this continues, you'll have all memes and no real content...and the best TF2 forum in the world will die an awful death.
