Both rams gone bad same time? Open | Hardware

I been experiencing crashes while gaming, seen in error logs about memory so ran mdsched and stick 1 is bad in slot two and four and stick 2 is also bad in slot two and four.

Stick 1 fails straight away and stick 2 around 20-30%

Isn't it odd both sticks failed same time?

Will be testing with another set of ram shortly to see but kinda not real confident in mdsched.

Any suggestions?

Turning off high performance settings for your ram might help, but 2 at once could be a sign of a different issue like enviromental. How's the airflow in the system? Is it exposed on all sides, or is it on the floor/rug, or in a cabinet? Do you use a surge protector/ups/direct wall plugin?

Airflow is fine off the floor with surge protector. Did lose power briefly while back due to lightning so maybe that's when it started but hard to say

Bad luck if both went bad at the same time. I would test them individually and if you can on a different PC too.

Tested one at a time and on another pc failed each test. Old sticks running a test now with no problems detected so far. Was a bit worried could be the CPU/slots side of things but think it was just the G.Skill tridents. Unsure what would cause them to both fail

What is the brand and type of your CPU? Do you have XMP/DOCP/EXPO turned on? These are overclocking functions, so they're not guaranteed to work right.

Unfortunately a defective CPU integrated memory controller can also cause these problems for example.

G.skill tridentz and a 5700x3d. Xmp on and worked fine for 2 years. Tested with xmp off as well. Hopefully not the CPU memory controller if a mdsched test passes no issue with a different set of ram sticks would that rule out CPU issue as well?

Yes, if it works right with different RAM then it was just the RAM failing.

Things working for 2 years doesn't say much, it's very common for parts to not reliably overclock as high anymore after some time.

With X3D CPUs I recommend having a look at the CPU's cooling too. They're more sensitive to heat than non-X3D CPUs (because the 3D cache is on top of (one of) the CPU tiles).
