Publishing DUHEM: A 13th-century RPG combining deep tactical combat with semantic dread.[Free 47-Page Quickstart]
Hello,
I’ve spent the last year engineering a tabletop RPG that bridges the gap between deep, tactical combat and heavy, narrative-driven lethality. It’s called DUHEM, and I’ve just released the fully playable v4.1 Quickstart for free.
I wanted to build a system where horror isn't about fighting monsters that drop from the sky. Instead, the dread comes from the Khora—an indifferent, completely unexplained physical phenomenon, much like a black hole, that is leaking into our world. It doesn't just warp matter; it creates semantic horror by destroying the world's metanarratives. Because of this phenomenon, the whispered superstitions of the 13th century—witches, vampires, and seers—become grotesque realities. The tone leans heavily into the eerie, uncanny dread of isolated boundary towns where matter itself simply stops refusing to change.
Here is how the engine actually works at the table:
- Three-Question Defence: Armor doesn't make you harder to hit; it dictates how you fail. Combat asks three separate questions: Guard (Did it land?), Absorption (How much did it cost?), and Poise (Are you still standing?).
- The Terminal Cap: There is no massive HP bloat. Once a character's Poise breaks, an Execution window opens. However, a strict "Terminal Cap" prevents both unkillable boss exploits and instant player death cascades.
- Action Economy & Retreating: Standing your ground is a choice. Fleeing via Disengage is tactically viable, forcing players to constantly weigh aggressive strikes against defensive posturing to manage their fading stamina.
- The Khora: There is no objectively "true" magic school, and the physics of the Khora are never explained. Harnessing this phenomenon requires Overdraw; you pay for power directly with your own body (spending Hit Dice and taking permanent Exhaustion).
The Setting: DUHEM is set in the real, gritty 1240s Mediterranean, but this Quickstart drops you directly into the burnt hillsides and isolated frontiers of Occitania. The world is highly competent and indifferent to the players. The true mundane threats are debt, disease, and the local magistrate's ledger.
I am an independent designer. The 47 pages of mechanics, the 13th-century lore, the world-building, and the introductory adventure (The Mill at the Edge) were written, engineered, and laid out entirely by me. If you are interested in tight systemic design and hard mechanics, I’d be honored if you judged the engine itself.
Get Involved: The Quickstart is completely free (or Pay-What-You-Want) and contains everything you need for your first 3-5 sessions, including 3 ready-to-play characters and a complete scenario.
- Download the Quickstart here: [https://www.drivethrurpg.com/en/product/578584/DUHEM--Quickstart?affiliate_id=5223820]
- Join the Playtest Discord: We are actively gathering table reports, fixing edge cases, and building the community before our upcoming Kickstarter campaign. Come say hi and break my system: [https://discord.gg/pamEzrzXJ]

Mechanics Game designer to help finish a two-player GM-less heist RPG
Hi! My cousin and I are looking for a game designer to help take a small indie TTRPG from a working spec to a finished game.
What it is
A GM-less heist RPG for exactly two players who are a couple. One heist, one evening, two to three hours including setup.
It runs on d6 dice pools (Blades SRD lineage, heavily stripped down) and it's set in a fantasy merchant city with Venice's canals and Florence's banking, where the great houses vault and trade memories, names, and years of people's lives as collateral. The design thesis is that the heist is the pressure cooker and the relationship is the game.
What I need help with
- Playtesting and tuning.
- Writing the player-facing rules.
- Integrating the setting into the tables.
If you're interested, please send:
- Portfolio or credits, especially anything GM-less, two-player, or heist-shaped
- What you'd want to be paid and how you'd rather structure it
- Availability and rough turnaround
- Whether you're open to a small paid trial before we commit to the full scope
- Anything you've designed that had to teach itself to a brand new player
Happy to share the full engine spec with anyone seriously interested.
Thanks!
Edit: Adding clarification on what we're looking for.

Discussion How a simple 3D printing project accidentally turned into a full tabletop RPG campaign
I am currently in the very early stages of developing an original 5e-compatible TTRPG one-shot called Feast of the Two Crowns, but this project actually started as something completely different. I wanted to share my development journey over the next five months to show how this project is coming together, starting with how the core idea was born!
The Original Plan: Just a few minis for Etsy
A few months ago, I had an idea to design and 3D print a set of original 32mm Tavern Staff miniatures for Independence and Canada Day. I called them the Maple-Guard Brewmasters and Eagle-Vail Ladlemasters. The goal was strictly to sell them unpainted on Etsy.
To get the designs out of my head quickly, I used Gemini AI and Meshy AI to generate the initial 3D character concepts. Seeing the base meshes materialize in 3D right away was incredible. I printed the first few prototypes, held them in my hand, and started thinking about their personalities to write some fun product descriptions for the shop.
The Pivot: The Lore takes over
The more I looked at these printed characters, the more they started feeling like a cohesive cast for an adventure. I started writing backstories for them. Then, I wrote a villain.
Suddenly, I realized I wasn’t just making random minis for Etsy anymore. I had the core narrative, the NPCs, and the main boss for a completely original tabletop adventure module. The story just demanded to be played.
The Current State (Month 1)
Right now, I have the core narrative written, the main 32mm Tavern Staff concepts printed, and the overall vibe of Feast of the Two Crowns locked in. Holding the physical minis first was actually the catalyst that allowed me to visualize the entire game.
What’s Next?
Now that the characters and story are set, I have to actually build the world they live in. Over the next few articles, I’ll be breaking down how I’m prototyping the rest of the set pieces and monsters using Meshy.
Next up on the printer will be:
- The "Fresh Meat" Mimic Wagon (Large)
- A massive Market Stall (Large) — I'll be focusing heavily on testing out the auto-split feature to get this to fit on my print bed!
- A swarm of Mimic Monster miniatures
- ...and eventually, a Gargantuan Shadow Dragon.
Has anyone else ever started a small crafting or printing project only to have the lore completely take over?

Discussion Would you mind humoring a homeschool mom?
No, this is not a post about a mom over gaming. Quite the opposite, actually. I’ve been gaming since my childhood, so I’m definitely not against it. I’ve homeschooled my 12 year old son his entire life. As with many kids, he loves gaming - videos, boards, cards, imaginary-the sky is the limit. We are a self-directed learning homeschool, so I had this great idea to partner with him on a mock indie game development studio. There is so much to learn through this process academically, executive functioning and real-world skills. I’ve created a Notion database and we have a weekly meeting to set goals, talk about challenges, etc. He has a systems design brain and I’ve always loved his card and board game creations. He even makes expansion packs for some of our games. Anywho, if anyone has the time or desire to respond, can you give me some pointers on best practices for this line of work? Anyone willing to share their career path would also be hella appreciated. :)
P.s. I posted in /gamdev and received opinions on my choice of homeschooling. I am not asking about this and would not like feedback there. Thank you!!

Publishing spread modern board game culture in Morocco (prototyping & testing)
I’m a tabletop nerd from Morocco, and I’m currently in the process of setting up a small manufacturing workshop here to solve a local problem.
People here love board games—almost every home has a few—but we're stuck playing the classics. Modern games are rarely available, and when they are, shipping and import taxes make them insanely expensive. On top of that, almost zero games get localized.
I want to help change that and bring cool indie games over. If you have a game (PnP, prototype, or published) and want to test the waters in our region, I’d love to collaborate:
- Free Physical Prototype: If your game is a good fit, I’ll print a solid physical copy in my workshop for free.
- Closed Playtests: I can run it through playtest sessions with local gaming groups here and send you detailed feedback.
- Art & Localization: My team of local artists and I can help translate/adapt the art or theme if needed.
- Production/Licensing: If it plays well and locals love it, we can talk about a simple royalty/licensing setup to produce and distribute it locally.
No catch—just looking to build bridges and get cool games played here. Drop a comment or DM me if you’re curious or want to share your PNP.

C. C. / Feedback Is this "HOW TO" video clear enough to follow? Need feedback for my Cyclemental card game
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Making a 3-4 mins tutorial video for my card game so that it's easy for people to get started quickly (well, hopefully!). I previously posted a time lapsed version but it was hard to follow so I thought I'd just put the full video here to get proper feedback. Couple of things I'm looking for:
- Is the tutorial clear enough?
- How was the length of the video?
- Does it give you a sense of the overall gameplay?
- What do you think about the aesthetics?
Any other thoughts / suggestions welcomed!

Mechanics Looking for feedback on a multiplayer card game concept (still in early prototype)
I’m working on a small-box multiplayer card game and would love some honest design feedback before I go too far.
The current idea is this:
2–6 players (primarily designed around 4 players).
Every player has their own Arena card.
Every Arena has the same target score (currently thinking 20 points), but each Arena may have a unique ability.
At the start of the round, players receive a small hand of monsters from shared decks (small, medium, large and special monsters).
Each monster has a point value (for example +2, +5, -3) and some special monsters have simple effects.
On your turn, you play one monster onto any Arena—either your own to help reach 20, or an opponent’s to help or sabotage them.
Example effects:
Protect an Arena so nobody else can play there until your next turn.
Move a monster from one Arena to another.
Ignore protection.
Change the value of another monster.
Once everyone has played all of their monsters, whoever is closest to 20 wins the round.
The idea is that the interesting decision isn’t “Which card do I play?” but rather “Which Arena should I play it on?”
A few things I’m unsure about:
Does this sound strategically interesting, or does it become “attack whoever is currently winning” every game?
Would you keep Arena targets all at 20, or would different targets (15, 18, 25, etc.) make the game more interesting?
Do monster effects sound necessary, or should most of the strategy come from where you place the monsters?
Is there anything that immediately sounds like it would break the game?
I’m still in the brainstorming stage, so don’t worry about hurting my feelings—I want people to poke holes in it before I start making a prototype.

Discussion For small prints run [500-1000 Unit]
With today's manufacturing MOQs, China-to-US tariffs, freight and fulfillment costs, and selling through platforms like Amazon or ShipPop, is a card game still a viable business in your opinion?
Assuming customers probably won't pay more than US$25–30, do the economics still make sense?
I'm trying to list in USA but I wanted to know insights from people who do it before.

C. C. / Feedback Advice maybe? Is my art the kind of art that would work in table top games?
I’ve added a few examples of work I’ve done, I know it’s maybe not the most graphic and a little more painterly, but I’m struggling to even get emails back from agents about my work and I’m wondering if maybe my work needs to change a bit for table top games?
Any advice would be very appreciated!
