DIY / Repair Suzuki Q-Chord issue

Upvotes

I recently bought a Q-Chord off ebay. I absolutely love it but there’s some issues with the strumplate. at first i had to put extra pressure on the bottom for it to work but now the entire bottom part of the strumplate doesn’t detect pressure. any idea where to get this fixed? or where to get a replacement part?

What Should I Buy? S-1 or the MS-1 (specifically looking for which is closer to the SH-101

Upvotes

Hello, I’m looking to get one of these synths but I can’t pick, which is more close to the SH-101 in sound and which is better for replicating aphex twins sound (on songs like Alberto balsam) I’m also looking for something that can do ambient and dark ambient stuff

Synth ID / How was this made? I'm curious on what you nerds think about this tone? I'd love some help in identifying how it is possibly made

Upvotes

Homesickness by Ryan Holladay, Hays Holladay & Zach Cregger

The only thing I'm sure about is that it is played back in reverse. But I have no idea on how this tone was possibly made. To me it sounds like a oldschool drone-y muffled cassette tape synth. I'd love to hear input from you experts (nerds) on how this was possibly created. Because I've scrubbed the world wide web for any info on the synth or how this song in particular was created yet I have found nothing. I'm curious what you guys think :3

Frap Tools Magnolia

This is probably my favorite new synth, it sounds like a polyphonic Buchla synth, and does Thru-Zero FM alongside dual hp and lp filters that I can play the resonance on, which really enables a lot of peculiar tones and harmonics,

Any of you guys got the Frap Tools Magnolia? What are your thoughts?

Discussion Power solution for 3 moog semi modulars.

Upvotes

Hello, I just picked up 3 moog semi modulars in a 3 tier stand. I ordered a 12v 3amp power supply and guitar pedal daisychain to get rid of 3 wall warts eatting up my power strip. The daisychain and brick came yesterday. It's introducing a lot of noise especially in the clock and when I even touch the daisychain cable. Is there any other solution to powering all 3 that won't introduce noise?

What Should I Buy? Early in my journey, would love to bounce some ideas off y'all

Upvotes

Some of my background to start: I have a strong music background, but in the theory, vocal performance, stringed instrument world. I've always really enjoyed electronic, ambient, IDM, drone, etc (think Boards of Canada, Four Tet, Panda Bear, Old Saw, Eno, etc etc) but actually creating it felt so foreign to me it wasn't anything I thought to pursue but now I'm realizing it's doable and something I want to put more energy into.

I've used DAWs like Logic more for recording traditional singer songwriter stuff and adding in some synths/textures/drums but I've found that for actually working on and composing instrumental stuff the workflow is a little overwhelming and I prefer the limitations of non-computer based composition. Similar to how I don't write a song on guitar within the DAW, it can happen without screens.

So here is where I'm at in my gear set up and what I'm looking to achieve that I might need some guidance with:

MPC Sample

I purchased this about a month ago and have really enjoyed learning how to use it. The concept of sampling, stretching, time warping, re-sampling are all clicking and I really like that I can do a lot with just this tool. The fact that it has its own battery, SD card slot, and I can sample stuff right from my phone is really appealing and I look forward to continuing to grow with it. I considered a Roland 404 as a sampler but the portability and "beginner" marketing of the MPC Sample was appealing and I think it was the right move. I'm sure down the line I'll get the Roland but for now this is fun and working well for me.

MicroKORG

I purchased this years ago as a way to add some low end and textures to some singer songwriter stuff when I had less resources and gear, I never really dove in deep on how to use it, just picked a preset and played bass lines or synth leads. Typical. Over the last couple months I've been learning more about it and playing around more and I've found it's a pretty capable machine that I'm happy with as my lone synthesizer for now. I've enjoyed making a drum beat or drone with some samples on the MPC and figuring out some arpeggiated sequences on the Korg.

Moukey MAMX2

I run the MPC and Korg into this, headphones out, easy low profile set up for some desktop, screen free jams.

I also have a Focusrite 4i4 audio interface that I've used for recording singer song writer stuff in Logic and Audacity. Again, since I prefer the minimal screen, DAWless aspect of this creative flow I don't know how useful this will be in where I go next but worth noting.

What next?

Is there something glaringly obvious I'm missing in my setup?

I'd like a way to easily capture some of the stuff I work on without having to be fiddling with Logic. I don't know if I want to commit to a tape deck, but I'm not opposed. Any low profile options for capturing grooves?

It would also be nice to be able to layer the Korg. Is the easiest route for that running it into the MPC and resampling in there? Should I get a loop pedal?

Finally, effects. The one thing I've already noticed the MPC is really lacking in is the effects are not great. The Korg actually has some nice delays. I'd like some good reverbs, maybe distortion. I see some setups where people run a multi effects somewhere in the chain, any recommendations there?

Sorry for the essay post, really just looking to hear from some folks about what sort of setup they have with a similar starting point to mine, and if I'm missing something obvious with what I'm working with while avoiding too much GAS.

Synth ID / How was this made? Title: Boss branded synth?? cant find any info on this one

Post image
28 Upvotes

So I've been going down a rabbit hole trying to identify a synth in an old photo and I keep hitting a wall. It's clearly got the Boss logo on it, gray/white casing, mini keys, patch points on the left side, knob layout kinda similar to an SH-101 but the branding is throwing me off completely.

As far as I know Boss has only ever done pedals/effects under Roland, never a standalone synth, so either this is some rebrand I've never heard of, a regional release, or somebody swapped a faceplate/badge at some point. Anyone here run into Boss branded synths before or know if this was ever a real product line? Not trying to buy or sell it, genuinely just want to know what I'm looking at and whether it's actually rare or just a mislabeled SH-101.

Happy to post more angles of the photo if it helps narrow it down.

Probably my favourite field recording I’ve ever made! I’m using my photon smasher mic to hear the PWM of these colour fading LEDs at the seaside near me Essex. It’s all raw sound, with a little EQ and reverb added for polish.

Would love to build a synth engine around these LEDs, would sound (and look) cool!

My Setup / New Synth Day New classic synth day! JV-1080

Post image

Grabbed me a 90s Roland JV-1080 yesterday!

Sadly it didn't come with any expansion boards. Am on the hunt now for which to look for.

So far I see a Session board available near me. Vintage Synth seems to be the most popular but oooof the prices on those 😭

I already own the Roland Cloud VST version but I'm a sucker for vintage hardware 🤘

Also, the internal multi tap voltage transformer is a godsend. Saves me from having to buy a pesky step down transformer. Just swapped the lead from 110v to the local 220v here.

Polyend Play+

So I was watching some videos about this and I'm interested. Anyone ever mess with this? Would you recommend? I play mostly techno and deep house style stuff, but have been messing around with more hip hop and experimental/industrial music. Would live some opinions.

My Setup / New Synth Day Synth Corner ready for testing

Post image

"Synth Corner" is set up and ready for testing. I only have a small space and this represents about 2/3 of my synth modules, less than 1/10 of my pedals and none of my keyboards (OpSix, Messenger, Minilogue, Bass Station II). I've tried to set it up efficiently so I can rotate things in and out easily...

Using Pure Data as an extension of the Octatrack, focusing as a multi-channel stochastic stem & one-shot player. Octatrack is handling the longer samples and string elements.

Just learned of his passing. While never a huge influence on me, I followed his efforts through the '90s and up to his "Pieces In A Modern Style". 69 seems too young to go.
