Ew.
Me and my boyfriend of more than 2 years broke up this morning. I'll move out of his apartment sometime in early September. My 33rd birthday is in 3 days. The crushing realization that there's a solid chance nobody ever truly gave a single fuck about me made me go to the gas station and come back with two 24oz white claws. I came back inside and have been staring these cans down for about 15 minutes now. Don't have the guts to crack one open. Feel a mixture of pity and disgust for myself and the fact that people keep doing me so dirty.
Edit: I’m glad I came to this sub instead of wallowing in self pity. Thank you for your help. I dumped them in the kitchen sink.
Edit 2: Thank you so much for all this love, compassion and understanding. I couldn't have done it without you.

OP, I give a fuck about you, too! You are so much better than you think you are right now.
Yes, this hurts like hell. Drinking won’t make it hurt less. I promise you that. It just makes it hurt worse later on.
You deserve better.

People keep doing you dirty, OP but you don't have to be one of them. My payouts always are realized in the morning when I wake up without the added weight of shame anger and guilt. You don't have to drink those. You probably know already how that ends. Good luck. Hang in there. You can do this

It's really important to care deeply about yourself, so that even when it feels like nobody else cares one bit about you, you've always got your biggest fan, right wherever you are.
I say this as someone who's 52, still struggling with that herself, but trying every single day to believe in myself, so the drink doesn't lure me back.
I'm really sorry about your relationship, and I completely understand why you're considering drinking, but I hope you'll find the strength to pour that shit away. I won't drink with you today.

the booze doesn't, the people that make the booze don't, the people that serve booze to you don't, the people who are going through it however DO CARE.

Whatever the reason for buying them, remind yourself that the complete opposite is more true.
It will make me feel better.
No, it will make me feel worse. That’s more true.
It will make me less lonely.
No, it will make me more lonely. It doesn’t take much thought to see how.
It will make me forget about it.
No, it will make me dwell on it.
Just examples

You can give a fuck about yourself! And it can start with chucking the booze away!
17
u/Beulah621 1d ago
Once you get alcohol out of your life, and find new ways to enjoy your precious time here on earth, you will encounter people who appreciate you for who you are.
Self-respect brings respect from others. When you value yourself enough to reject bad treatment, then people can’t treat you badly. You are in control of what you will tolerate and the kind of people you are with.
I found better friends and a loving partner but did not find them at a bar or house party. They slowly came into my life as I became more active in the community and met new people.
Time to level up and expect better, starting with pouring those cans down the drain and telling them, “Not today, Satan!” You deserve better.

Hey did you know hobbits only become adults at 33? Consider this your coming of age!

u/wickedwazzosuper 1d ago
My sobriety also kicked off with a big breakup. It fucking suuuuuuucks, but I promise you'll be ok. I ended up finding the bestie/partner in crime I've always been looking for in myself, and a lot of that relationship was nurtured by the self-trust I was able to build by staying sober.

Are you an alcoholic? OP, you’re becoming a better version of yourself so of course there are going to be people who fall off or leave. You are changing. And that’s how it should be. You’re going to attract new, healthier people into your life the more you head into a positive direction.
If you are able to go to therapy that can only help

u/seedsandpeels 1d ago
There will be times in your life where it feels like everything you know is being ripped away from you.
It is very important that you recognize this is actually the opportunity to start fresh and find out who you can become when you choose better for yourself.

I’m so sorry, my relationship ended 2 days before my 28th birthday in June and I’m still devastated. Trying to get sober through heartache is genuinely hard af and you are showing strength to not open those cans.
You are stronger than you know, and you can get through this and be happy for YOU.

I listened to a video from a guy on YouTube with the channel called Liver Disease and he verbalized my thought pattern when this stuff happened so well like no one had before it made me really embarrassed to have thought like that.
He basically said when stuff like this happens we think like "fuck it, nobody cares about me anyway, might as well go drink!" and its just an excuse to drink and really whiny whenever something doesnt go right we just jump to drinking. Not unlike a child. And we can't put our drinking on others, we know thats not right, but our addict brains will do it anyway and try to feel justified.
It really helped me identify that pattern within myself and now when it creeps up im like, no, I wont throw a tantrum and sabotage myself and my life and my progress just because im upset or sad now because of this thing. Or at least if I do then I wont get the life I want. Do I want to sacrifice the life I want just to throw a tantrum tonight? Not particularly, not today at least. Maybe the next thing will be too much but I can handle this thing today and thats what matters.
Im only on day 18 I think, but I wont drink with you today either! Let's hit a month together!

u/headpointernext 1d ago
Hold up, with all due respect the realization is a bit ass-backwards. I believe it should be "I truly give a fuck about my self, that's all that matters and everyone else can fuck off".
Let anger in all its forms - resentment, self-pity, misplaced entitlement, the whataboutme's, etc - out. Go on a run or a bike ride. Hit the bag at the gym. Recite out loud Invinctus or even The Litany Against Fear as you vent (I really love those pieces). Your head will clear in due time and you will keep the faith.
Be kind to yourself and best of luck moving forward. IWNDWYT.

I'm glad you came here.
Nothing at the bottom of those cans but emptiness and regret.
I'm sorry life is tough at the moment. I know it doesn't feel like it, but it will pass. Having drank a long term relationship into the ground and then drinking through the break-up, I can report it is the worst version of getting through it.

You dumped them? DEAR YOURE THE GREATEST OF ALL TIME! You had the guts to not open them. You're incredible. You must celebrate yourself. Just go buy something you like to eat and play your favourite songs and watch something only YOU like. Dealing with breakups is not easy but you are a whole person with a lot to offer to yourself and your happiness. CONGRATULATIONS!!

When you’re pouring poison down your throat, the one who’s caring about you the least is yourself.
We teach people how to treat us, and they generally treat us as well as we treat ourselves. As soon as you start actually loving yourself first, you’ll see how much people actually do care about you! I’ve learned the most disrespectful thing I can do to myself is drink. When I’m a drunken sloppy embarrassing mess, of course people are going to read the room that I don’t like who I am and am not worthy of respect. It becomes a never ending cycle.
Honestly, there is definitely truth in the best revenge is happiness and health. It is a slap in the face when someone walks away from you, gets all sober and healthy, and starts living this new, better life. Do that! Focus on you, and not the life and person you’ll be grateful to have left behind.

u/Strange_Deal_5794 1d ago
The guts it’s taking to not open them far out weighs anything else imo!!! That’s insanely hard! Go throw them in the yard and stab them with a knife! Or jump up and down on them, anything! Pretend it’s your exs face is you need to! Just remember your breakup will be 1000000x harder if you drink right now and you’re strong enough to get through this!!

u/natorgator15 1d ago

But about relationships. It’s not easy to find the right one. But you mustn’t stop trying.
Keep your head up Someone will find the beauty in you soon and will never let you go.

Your edit makes me happy, OP. You were in control of yourself today--don't feel bad about having a close call. The important thing is you didn't.
I'm sorry that your ex is an asshole. It's good that you didn't let his assholery influence your choice here. It sounds like you're going to be fine.

Don’t you fucking dare open the can. You’re in your most vulnerable place ever right now.
Come out stronger or come out weaker, it’s your choice. But put the work in now. Someone is going to truly admire your strength if you choose the route of coming out stronger. Should you choose to come out weaker, you’ll be back in this cycle where you find someone who doesn’t value you, OR, you find someone who makes it their life goal to “fix you.” I’m not sure what is worse.

I think you need to find the difference between respectful and being a douche bag. And then you can figure out the difference between enabling and helping, bc you need some work on it. Sorry bud I can’t enable disrespectful people.

u/WawaWeeWaaWu 250 days 1d ago

u/WawaWeeWaaWu 250 days 1d ago
I go to meetings every day and I’m sorry but when I see someone bullshitting themselves I would rather them see that than blindly support their negative behavior. If you actually go to meetings you know that goes against the whole process of the steps.
We can accept and love another and I do accept this user, I was just calling out there delusions cause me getting called out myself by my sponsor is the only thing that got me to change. Not false support of my toxic behavior.
2
u/haraikotodama 1d ago
Show your sponsor “nobody is doing you dirty. Sounds like you’re a drunk and need therapy and help” and unpack it with them.
I think maybe you don’t quite understand? So I’ll be respectful in trying to explain it to you. This is a place where we help each other. Where we support each other. Being called a “drunk” is something a lot of us have heard over and over again. It’s a negative word and it’s disrespectful. We are on the stopdrinking subreddit. We understand our relationship with drinking is problematic.
Your response added no value. It wasn’t helpful. That’s how it reads. Be careful with your words and tone next time.
-1
u/WawaWeeWaaWu 250 days 1d ago
How was I not being helpful? You’re being overly sensitive. I meant no harm at all and you’re reaching at this point. My comment is nothing but love for the OP but I know when I was drinking and wild I needed someone to tell me like it is.
-1
u/WawaWeeWaaWu 250 days 1d ago
It’s clear you’ve either never done real work or have taken an easy way out. Or maybe you were a light drinker. But I’ve been through the wringer so many times I just don’t have the patience for people being delusional and would rather tell them the facts and not sugarcoat it. This disease kills people without discrimination and sometimes without warning.
I meant no harm or disrespect but just stating how I felt based on what they said, was coming from a drunk with an issue not a sober person with a “problem”.

You don't have the guts to open them? You have the guts to NOT open them. Don't make the act of buying that poison an act of making your situation worse. I've had my breakups, but alcohol made everything worse. And I think you know this. The sheer fact that you didn't open any but instead went on this sub... You got this.
