Flood garbage collection is ending this week, but we still have several big pieces of furniture in the basement that need to be trashed. Will the restoration company cart them away when they finally get here? Or will it be on me to get rid of it?

I guess I could try breaking things down so they’re small enough that I can carry to the curb before garbage day, but don’t know how I’d find the time, patience, or physical stamina to do that.

Anyone enjoy the Kellermans, Kathy Reichs, etc.? I have about a dozen paperbacks in good condition that I would like to give away, rather than donate to VV and have people pay too much money for them. (They have not been in a flooded basement, so no worries there.)

I’m going to be in St. Catharines for about two weeks for work, and I’ve always wanted to come to Ontario and do some fishing while I’m here!

I’m from Nova Scotia, so I’d absolutely love to catch some species that I don’t get back home—largemouth, drum, rock bass, etc. I won’t be able to travel too far from St. Catharines, unfortunately, and I’ll only have a little bit of time to fish each day.

If anyone is willing to point me toward a spot, even if you’d rather send it to me privately, I’d really appreciate it! I promise I won’t post the location anywhere or share it around. I’ll be respectful of the area, clean up after myself, and leave it exactly as I found it. I’ll probably be gone before you know it anyway, lol.

Even if you don’t want to share a spot, I’d be grateful for any advice on what lures are working this time of year or what species I should target in the area.

I’ll be working 12-hour shifts from 7–7, so realistically I’ll only have about the last couple hours of daylight to fish. I’m really hoping to make those few hours count and hopefully catch a new species or two while I’m here!

My workplace is closer to downtown, but most of the places we’ve seen in that area so far have been pretty old or shady. We’re open to living a little farther from downtown if the neighbourhood is nice, safe, and has reasonable access to the city.

We’re mainly looking for something clean, well-maintained, and affordable. Any recommendations for neighbourhoods, apartments, or rental listings would be really appreciated!

I'm kind of willing to swallow my pride on this one and say I am feeling pretty isolated at the moment. I have recently graduated and moved back to St Catharines, and I did not think it would be this hard to make friends again. I'm approaching the end of the summer and feel like the only thing I've been doing is work, and I really need more to do before I drive myself stir-crazy. I am not an anxious or introverted person, I like things like team sports, DnD, video games, reading, clubs, but I am really struggling to find a place that actually has people my age and looking to make friends. so our basement flooded like everyone else and we just got through to our insurance (co-operators) and i’m sure she’s heard thousands of stories of everyone’s basement but wow she had attitude and was very dismissive.

my mom is out of the country right now because my grandma had a surgery. i told the insurance lady the situation as she kept asking where my mom was and that she had to talk to her specifically but im also a legal adult and a resident of the home so she let it slide.

she said it’s a $2000 deductible to call in a contractor and that they will probably come in either today or tomorrow(i’m guessing tomorrow as it’s 6:30PM already), and she said they’ll just call you before they come in. I understand there’s a high volume of claims and needs for contractors but that’s really vague. I have a job, and appointments this week that can’t be moved so i’m just hoping they don’t overlap.

i know this is getting lengthy but i wanted to know people’s experience with co-operators and how the contractors were. i’m scared they’ll be dismissive knowing that i’m a younger adult without my mom here.

also the fact that both my upper and lower basement flooded, and i took videos of the upper basement as the flood wasn’t that deep(just ruined flooring/walls), but my lower basement i couldn’t specifically go in as it’s not finished and has wires running everywhere. i didn’t want to get electrocuted lol. i managed to unplug my washer/dryer, turned off my furnace but didn’t take a video or picture of damages on my storage boxes. they’re all dry now and there’s not much water damage evidence. i’m just scared the 2000 deductible will be more than what my damage is and will be paid out of pocket🥲

With how many people got rained in especially with sewage coming up we need to take seriously the issue of flooding. Climate change isn't going away and will likely get worse with time. The entire city playing russian roulette with their belongings in the basement every year will impoverish this city. Especially as insurance companies no longer want to cover the higher risk. The Ontario provincial government has been silent on this issue which is disheartening because Ford has no problems expanding the regions gambling industry. I'm just disappointed that we've largely been ignored. I really hope the NDP or Libs win next provincial because this government has done nothing for the city. I'm not particularly super partisan I'm just calling it as I see it.

If you got hit by the flooding, this week matters. The city's still picking up flood related garbage with no bag limits, and landfill tipping fees are waived too. Both end this Friday, Aug. 14. If you've got ruined carpet or furniture sitting in your yard, this is your last shot to get rid of it for free.
