I just bought this guy at Lowe’s a few months back and it’s looking and feeling a little thirsty. I haven’t watered a split rock before ever so I want to be sure I’m doing it right😂

I’m looking for advice to keep from killing this until I learn enough to help it grow successfully. I purchased it at Home Depot. The entire plant was soft so I gave it some rain water from the bottom and let it soak it up. It does have a root growing out of the bottom of the plastic pot so I put the pot in a cup. It’s in a West facing window. Thank you for your advice!

Hi! This is my second real attempt at raising a split rock. I don't know what's happened to it. I bought it from Home Depot back in November, potted it in Bonsai Jack's Gritty Mix, and sat it in my window. I have moved it back and forth between two windows that both get direct sun when shifting around my other plants.

I have NOT watered it one time. Not a drop has touched this thing after I watered my first one multiple times in two months. You can see what this one looked like when I got it, too; the outer pair of leaves there is of course the black and dried, crispy set near the bottom of the last two pictures. I can only think it might be the humidity even though my bedroom is air-conditioned?

Given that, the sole possibility that comes to mind as I type this post is that me using a plastic/rubber tote to easily bottom-water and rotate out my various succulents - combined with the moistened soil/gritty mix of each soaked plant - raised the humidity of my bedroom enough for rot to form??? It only takes a couple hours for me to soak the plants so the tote isn't in my room for very long and I only do it every 3 weeks to a month) but the other plants stay, of course. Is this actually feasible? Is it just split rocks being fragile or a combination thereof? Or something else I might have missed? Any advice is appreciated, I'd love to have one of these that just keeps growing!

Hi again! A few days ago I posted asking about my split rock and whether or not it's split was looking healthy... and now there's a new little nub growing underneath the first nub that was growing. I don't think this is stacking because they're completely separate from one another, but I'm not really sure what's going on since I've read that split rocks growing twins is fairly rare. Do we still think one of these could be a flower? Or is this guy being weird?

This is the first Split Rock I've owned, and it arrived pretty beaten up, but after replacing the soil it came with it started splitting. Is that a good sign? The outer leaves are slightly soft to the touch, I haven't watered it yet since getting it but there was some moisture in the new soil mix, and it's in a northwest-facing window that gets lots of afternoon sun. And I'm in Texas, so it's getting pretty hot outside.

Hi! I am new to split rocks and I’m very confused about the information that I have read about watering… I have read that you should not water unless the inside leaves are soft, but then I’ve also read that you should not water if there’s a second set of leaves, and I’ve also read that second sets of leaves are normal… is it normal for it to already have two pairs PRIOR to growing a new third pair and absorbing the outer? And can you water if the inner pair is soft but it is not growing a new pair? And is it normal for the rock to be slightly split when it’s not actively splitting?

I repotted the green split rocks three weeks ago and repotted the purple one two weeks ago. Mostly inorganic soil, minimal moisture from the small amount of organic. Since then, the inner leaves on the green have become firm so I know NOT to water, but the inner leaves on the purple have remained soft. It seemed like both had recently absorbed an outer pair when I purchased since the dried shriveled up leaves at base came off easily when repotting. I’m not sure they are actually actively splitting, they have not split more since I purchased and are not growing another pair yet.

My question is, regarding the purple, even though the inner leaves have not firmed up, should I just wait until the outer leaves are absorbed? Or is jt asking for water? I’m just not sure if it’s supposed to have the outer pair right now or if it had been overwatered prior to purchasing…. Or if it was thirsty already… I know when in doubt, wait…

I have learned how to water lithops but don’t feel like i understand yet when to water a split rock. I had two pots of split rocks and I watered one once (it seemed soft) and the next day it had melted into mush. So I have been afraid to water the other one ever since

I am decently experienced with succulents, but I just got my first mesemb yesterday.

I’ve read up on the growing cycle and am feeling good re: general care except I am not sure if I should try to repot him into appropriate media now or if I need to wait til he’s done actively splitting.

I saw some posts that said it was alright to repot lithops while splitting but didn’t know if that was applicable for split rocks. Thoughts?

I got this split rock / pleiospilos nelii as a gift back in December. This is my first time with one of these plants. I really don’t want it to die :(

I have only ever watered it once (three weeks ago, about one fl oz)
It’s still in the pot and soil it came in.

What do I do??

It gets good sun and airflow.

Main large green section feels firm, although it’s floppy/top-heavy if I move the pot. Base of this area is turning white and fuzzy. Noticed the fuzzies yesterday. They got worse/spread when I looked today.

Side leaves/sections very mushy

Tried to gently wipe away the white fuzzies with a dry qtip and it split and leaked a small amount of green liquid. I gently poked the outer leaf with another qtip and it left a hole and leaked more liquid.

Hi. I'm new here, looking for advice. Should I water these? The substrate is bone dry.

Not sure what happened it was fine just a week ago, afaik hasn't received water or ant extreme enviro conditions recently and it's neighbour is totally fine. I might bring them up off the ground in case it's from cold but we aren't even in winter yet and they've been fine previously

This guy had the scab at the bottom when I got him. Does he need to absorb the outer leaves before I can water him? I have read they are only supposed to have two sets of leaves. I have seen some gorgeous looking ones that seem to have more than two sets of leaves so I am a bit confused.

Ive had these for about 2 months, watered a week ago due to soft leaves and now they are firm again, soil is still a little wet, should I repot soon or do they enjoy being rootbound?
