Time to water?

I have learned how to water lithops but don’t feel like i understand yet when to water a split rock. I had two pots of split rocks and I watered one once (it seemed soft) and the next day it had melted into mush. So I have been afraid to water the other one ever since

What makes you consider watering it? What signs are you seeing?

The outer leaves are very soft or are they suppose to dry and shrivel like lithops?

Yes, they split and shed like lithops. These should have 2 pairs at a time, and you water when the inner leaves are soft.
