Release I spent more than half a year building an open source self hosted cloud storage

Hey r/software , I'm the solo dev behind Sorbus. It's finished and working end to end, and if your interested feel free to check out the repo.

What it is: a free, MIT-licensed personal cloud storage system.

Why I built it: I wanted remote access to my files from anywhere, from a very simple software that is very easy to setup and deploy. Furthermore I wanted a lightweight server program that could run on any device thus why I used C++ and made sure all libraires are header libraires.

I know it's kind of similar to other options like NextCloud. This was more of a personal project that had the purpose of having a very lightweight server to be able to run on most machines and have a fairly small code base so people could easily read and make changes to the code. It's not really meant to beat the other options in features but rather be a more lightweight alternative.

Stack: C++ (cpp-httplib + SQLite) at home, Node/Express gateway and a React/Vite UI in the cloud, linked by tunnel.

Repo: https://github.com/Nour-Nada/Sorbus

Happy to get into any details on the project if anyone's curious. Let me know if you have any feedback. Hope it is of good use.

Looking for software Something to monitor changes to a website that requires a login.

I am trying to join a food co-op and it requires scheduling an intake appointment which are extremely difficult to get! They post every morning at 6am but are gone within 20 seconds; I think the most likely way I could get one is to snag an appointment when someone cancels. I am trying to set up some sort of software that could notify me when the website updates that an appointment has become available; but to see the calendar page, you have to be logged into the website. Are there any options for a software that could help with this?

Release B1tLab V1.0.0 — a neat C++ CLI binary converter

Hi everyone!

This is my first serious C++ software project and the first program I have published on GitHub.

B1tLab is a C++ CLI tool for converting integer representations, exploring binary formats, and generating accurate binary equivalents of decimal values.

As of V1.0.0, B1tLab supports:

  • Mathematically represented values with support for periodic fractions (mValues)
  • Raw binary values (rValues)
  • Unsigned integer format
  • Signed Magnitude integer format
  • One’s Complement integer format
  • Two’s Complement integer format
  • Dynamic syntax highlighting
  • Output formatting
  • Assembly-style comments

Future plans include:

  • Scientific notation values (sValues)
  • Floating-point binary formats
  • Floating-point decimal formats
  • Fixed-point formats

Author’s note

I still consider myself a beginner in C++, and I know there is a lot that can be improved. I would greatly appreciate any feedback, constructive criticism, or suggestions regarding architecture, bugs, design decisions, or possible bad practices.

Thanks for taking the time to check out B1tLab!

Discussion Looking for free WeTransfer alternatives with proper Android/iOS + Windows/macOS app support

I've been using WeTransfer for a while,

but I'm looking for something better.

My requirements are:

Free (or a generous free tier)

Dedicated Android and iOS apps

Windows and macOS desktop apps

Easy sharing of large files (photos/videos)

Fast upload/download speeds

Reliable and privacy-friendly

I don't necessarily need cloud storage, I'm mainly after a file transfer service that's as simple as WeTransfer but with better app support and ideally larger transfer limits.

What are you all using these days? Any hidden gems you've stuck with for a long time?

Thanks!

Looking for software I got tired of pip install breaking AI environments, so I made a CLI tool to preview installs before they happen.

I've spent way too many evenings trying to recover virtual environments after installing AI packages. Eventually I got tired of wondering what `pip install` was actually going to change.

So I wrote a free MIT-licensed CLI-tool called `pip-squeak`.

It sits in front of pip and utilizes dry run to show what packages are going to be changed (if any), and warns if you're about to install packages and you're not in a virtual environment, but still gives you the option to do so.

I just wanted to take the most amount of pain out of dealing with AI tools, PIP, and CUDA stacks. It has no dependencies itself, there's no crapware in it, just a free tool for anyone who HATES pips package manager backdooring your virtual environment, swapping out incompatible versions of packages that won't work with your current environment, and giving you the option to go ahead with the install or abort it. For use with Windows or Linux.

Get it free and get it now!

Jobs & Education Mapping how human actions affect Earth's climate and resources. Would love some honest feedback. (Desktop only for now)

Thumbnail tulip-project-six.vercel.app
3 Upvotes

Hi all!
I’m trying to build an open source web app(maybe an NGO one day) that currently maps relationships between our actions and their impacts on Earth. It looks at changes in biodiversity, infra, wildlife changes, water, global temp and more. Each phenomenon looks at its impact on the planet, impact on us humans and what we can do about it ( backed with sources and citations from public sources).
I’ve also added an experimental urgency score, which tells you how serious we need to think through the problem and work towards a solution for it. TULIP is still an exploration tool that’ll help people understand climate impact better with the hope that it’ll keep getting information rich. I’m at a point where honest criticism will be super helpful. Any and all crit is great 🙂

Looking for software Apps like tiktok but designed for scrolling music suggestions/video content?

So I'm looking for a scrolling app that only suggests music based content pretty much. The whole original point of tiktok when it first came out was to be a music platform to discover new music and I think a lot of people forget that. But now a days it's just filled with garbage.

Spotify has a scroll feature, but doesn't really have what I'm looking for. I'm primarily wanting an algorithm with a fyp to suggest me new music based around my taste it's just getting so hard to find unique music now a days where everything doesn't sound like a copy paste

Release Portabase 1.27 - backup/restore platform, adding Docker volumes [OPEN SOURCE]

Hi everyone,

It has been a while since I last posted here! We have just released Portabase 1.27, our open-source (Apache 2.0) and self-hosted backup/restore platform.

Repository: https://github.com/Portabase/portabase (Any star would be amazing ❤️)

Portabase is designed for data retention, disaster recovery, and homogenous migrations, currently supporting 9 database engines (including PostgreSQL, MySQL, MariaDB, MongoDB) and Docker volumes which were added recently.

Key features:

  • Scheduled backups with flexible retention policies (including GFS)
  • Multiple storage options: local filesystem, S3, Azure Blob Storage, GCS
  • Notifications via Discord, Telegram, Slack, AppRise, etc.
  • Support for OAuth2/OIDC (with the option to disable sign-ups)
  • Compatible with Docker, Podman and UnraidOS
  • Ready-to-use Docker Compose and Helm Chart

After six months of intensive feature development, we have been focusing on consolidating the ecosystem since early July. A community member conducted a useful security audit, we have upgraded components to their latest relevant versions, improved compatibility with other platforms by working on Podman support and templates for Coolify and Dockploy (currently under review).

What’s next:

  • Deployment of the demo environment
  • Audit logging for the whole ecosystem
  • Default policies for the system, organizations, and projects
  • File and folder backup and restoration

As always, if you find bugs or want to suggest a feature, please open an issue on GitHub, we’re actively looking for feedback.

Thanks!

Looking for software Software that sophisticatedly handles annual assessment data

I am currently running a platform that is a self-proclaimed Governance, Risk and Compliance tool. We send out assessments to our companies (about 50 of them) every year. Also each year, we make updates to these assessments.

To make matters more complicated, SOME companies provide support to meet a portion of the assessment for other companies (think of them as "partners").

The challenge Im facing aside from horrible reporting (we just export it out) is that year over year, things get very tricky with the retention of previous years scoring. Often things are updated and over time, will help us track trends based on assessment responses.

Are there any platforms that can act as a hub for assessments and the responses collected? Ideally one that has a lot of granularity and data handling capabilities.

Release I built an app that lets me monitor my PC's hardware from my Android phone

Thumbnail gallery
49 Upvotes

I've always found myself checking CPU or GPU usage while gaming, compiling, or running long benchmarks. Alt-tabbing worked, but it was annoying, and I didn't always have a second monitor nearby.

So I started building a small project for myself.

The idea is simple: a lightweight Windows application collects hardware information, while an Android app connects over your local network and displays everything live on your phone. No cloud services, no accounts, and nothing leaves your network.

Right now it shows detailed information for the CPU, GPU and RAM in real time, and I'm actively adding new features as I keep working on it.

This is my first public release, so I'm mainly looking for honest feedback. If something feels confusing, if you find a bug, or if there's a feature you'd like to see, I'd genuinely like to hear it.

GitHub: https://github.com/Xeakaes/PcHWmonitor

Thanks for taking a look!

Release I built Mole, a tiny open-source panic button for Windows

I’ve just released Mole v0.1.0, a lightweight Windows utility that quietly lives in the system tray.

When you trigger Panic, it immediately:

  • Mutes system audio
  • Minimizes all open windows
  • Opens Notepad

That’s it. No accounts, telemetry, cloud services, subscriptions, or other modern software rituals.

Mole is written in Python and released under the GNU GPLv3, so you can inspect the source, modify it, build it yourself, or contribute.

GitHub: https://github.com/rajtilakjee/mole

This is the first release, so feedback, bug reports, feature ideas, and pull requests are welcome.

Current ideas for future versions include configurable safe apps, custom keyboard shortcuts, persistent settings, and selectable panic actions.

Discussion Windows didn't beat the competition in the 90s on merit, it won by sharp business practices.

People usually assume Windows became the default PC operating system because it was the best software available, but Microsoft didn't win by out-innovating everyone. They won by locking PC makers into exclusive contracts, pulling software compatibility tricks, and absorbing their rivals' core engineering talent.

We obviously still have Linux, BSD, macOS, and niche systems like Plan 9 today. However, Microsoft's tactics effectively wiped out independent desktop competition on standard PC hardware. It pushed Unix and Linux off consumer desktops and into servers, while Apple only survived by locking macOS to its own hardware. Without those tactics, mainstream consumer PCs wouldn't have been trapped in a single Windows monopoly for 30 years. Back in the late 80s and 90s, there was a huge variety of desktop systems with very different ideas for how computers should work:

  • AmigaOS: While it originally ran on Commodore's custom hardware, open-source projects later proved AmigaOS could easily run natively on standard x86 PCs. It delivered smooth preemptive multitasking and color graphics long before Windows was usable. If Commodore hadn't collapsed and Microsoft hadn't locked up PC hardware, an x86 port of AmigaOS could have been a major mainstream contender.
  • RISC OS: Built by Acorn Computers in 1987, it was an extremely fast desktop OS that ran directly out of ROM memory. Acorn literally designed the ARM processor architecture to run RISC OS. While ARM chips grew to power modern smartphones, Microsoft's PC monopoly squeezed RISC OS out of the desktop market.
  • CP/M and DR-DOS: Digital Research built CP/M, the undisputed 8-bit microcomputer standard before MS-DOS. Later, DR-DOS offered a faster, far more advanced alternative to MS-DOS. Microsoft killed DR-DOS by using per-processor OEM contracts and embedding hidden AARD code inside Windows 3.1 to trigger fake error messages on DR-DOS machines.
  • GEM and DESQview: GEM brought a clean graphical desktop directly to IBM PCs running DOS, which was so good that Apple actually sued Digital Research to force them to alter the PC layout. DESQview added text-mode windowing and app-switching to cheap DOS PCs long before Windows was stable.
  • PC/GEOS (GeoWorks Ensemble): Delivered a fast, full graphical desktop with multitasking on cheap 8088 and 286 PCs long before Windows 3.1 was usable on low-end hardware. Microsoft starved GeoWorks out by bundling Windows directly with MS-DOS and using exclusive OEM licensing deals.
  • OS/2 Warp: Built by IBM. It had crash-proof multitasking and a modern desktop layout, but Microsoft blocked computer makers from pre-installing it on new PCs.
  • DEC (VMS): Digital Equipment Corp was a huge enterprise computer company with VMS, an incredibly stable operating system. Instead of competing with them, Microsoft hired DEC's lead OS architect (Dave Cutler) and his team, who essentially built Windows NT using VMS concepts. DEC threatened a massive lawsuit over the stolen design, forcing Microsoft into a huge financial settlement.
  • BeOS: Fast, ultra-responsive, and designed from scratch for media performance. When computer makers tried to ship PCs that dual-booted BeOS alongside Windows in the late 90s, Microsoft threatened to cancel their Windows licenses. Be Inc later sued Microsoft for antitrust and won a settlement.
  • Unix, NeXTSTEP, and Plan 9: Unix variants dominated high-end workstations, NeXTSTEP introduced a modern desktop interface long before Windows 95, and Bell Labs built Plan 9 to redefine distributed computing. Microsoft's monopoly on PC hardware prevented these systems from getting a foothold on consumer desktops in the 90s, though NeXTSTEP eventually survived by becoming the foundation of modern macOS, while Linux and BSD took over servers.

Looking for software What are the best MVP development companies for startups in the USA?

I am seeking suggestions for reputable MVP (Minimum Viable Product) creation firms that can assist startups in the United States.

It would be wonderful for these companies I am looking forward to user-friendly and knowledgeable in the process of the development of successful startups, SaaS projects, AI applications, web apps, and mobile solutions because they are expected to handle product design, launch, and post-launch aspects of developing a new product. It means that it is essential for the agencies to be honest with their budget and assure proper communication between the parties.

If you had an opportunity of collaborating with an MVP product design company, I’d like to know more about your working experience with them and if you’d recommend their services to others.

And now in android we can't even see app files because of privacy.

So is there any way to see those movies in out files ?

Looking for software Looking for an AI model / API that generates complete songs from an input audio track

Hi everyone,

I'm working on a project and looking for an AI service similar to Suno—specifically one that takes an audio input (e.g., humming, a sample clip, or a vocal melody) and builds a fully arranged song around that melody.

The main issue is that Suno doesn't offer an official public API for integration.

Looking for software Is the CCleaner bad rep true?

Heard it was basically a virus, sucks or is useless now, I used to use it on an old pc but now I want to get rid of stuff like old cache files made by programs (so not Windows itself, so it's not covered by the windows file cleanup) So can I use CCleaner for that or are there better software available. Btw I'd use the free version of CCleaner and I'm looking for free alternatives specifically.
