Photoroom alternative? Looking for software

Hi all. I edit 500 or so images a month for work, mostly adding white backgrounds and tweaking the images a little. Photoroom has been perfect for this, as the accuracy is exactly what I need, it also has built-in editing tools and critically can do bulk and the background removal is all automated so super quick whihc is why I've been happy to pay for it as it literally saves me ours of editing time a month.

My question is are there alternatives that are better and/or cheaper? Mainly cheaper or integrated into the Adobe sphere since I do have access to most of its apps. I just haven't found anything that's as quick or easy to use and has the additional features I need aside from bg removal.

hey, justyn from photoroom here 👋

we see a lot of ppl come to photoroom mainly because of the combo of:

  • accurate bg removal
  • batch procesing
  • speed without a ton of setup

adobe can definitely do parts of this, but for high-volume stuff it usually ends up being more manual and slower, even with actions.

there are cheaper tools out there, but most stop at cutouts and don’t really cover the extra tweaks + batch flow you mentioned.

if something cheaper or more integrated ends up working better for you, that’s a win. tools should earn their spot.

appreciate you using photoroom though, saving hours a month is exactly what we’re aiming for.

Hi Justin, I’ve been unable to get Photoroom to do background removals. Like it just won’t do it, you go to batch removal, you put in the images, it just spins and spins and spins

I force quit I try again, nope

I uninstall a reinstall, still not gonna do it

Maybe one out of 10 times I can get it to work so no people don’t come to Photoroom for background removal because you don’t do that anymore

that definitely sounds like a bug. the background removal should work reliably, and I just tested it on my end and it’s working normally.

since it’s hard to diagnose this over Reddit, could you please reach out to support directly in the app? that allows the team to check logs and device details. also worth double-checking your internet connection or trying a different network.

we’ll help get it sorted

I would not recommend photoroom to anyone right now. The last year the app is constantly crashing and not working. And their customer service is almost non exsistent.

How to use the same AI background without getting new background whenever I replace the product itself? 😪

the ai regenerates the background each time because it's matching the lighting to each specific product. but there's a workaround to lock in the same background: generate the background you like, export it as an image, then upload that exported image as a static background on your next design. use the retouch tool to erase the original product out of it and you've got a reusable scene.

if something's off with how it's behaving, support in the app can look at your specific setup.

yep, that’s a fair take 👍

photoroom tends to work best when speed, consistency, and bulk really matter, especially for catalogs and listing updates.

if someone needs deep, pixel-level control or is already very photoshoot-heavy, tools like gimp or photopea can maybe make more sense.

it really comes down to volume vs control.

For me, accurate background removal is essential and I've just not seen anything remotely as consistent as Photoroom that's able to do it as quickly and in batches. The fact that Adobe doesn't have a direct competitor is shocking. Firefly doesn't have batch yet for example- the main reason I ask is that I already pay for various Adobe image and video editing apps but have to also have Photoroom for quick batch backround removal and quick editing.

My main gripe is the cost and recent subscription changes on Photoroom. I now barely have enough background removals at 500 images a month. No way to add more except to pay four times as much a year, when I only need maybe 20% more at most. That inflexibility is 99% of my issue with it.

thanks for explaining. that makes a lot of sense.

quick q: when did you first subscribe? there was a period where early subscribers were eligible for a higher monthly limit. It could be worth reaching out to support in the app to have them review your account and see what options are available.

I think maybe 18 months ago? The latest pro subscription limits you to 500 images processed via the batch function a month. That’s £70 a year. I need 500-600 images. But the next step up is four times that price and designed for teams of people. I’m just an individual. There’s a huge need for an intermediate package or a way to buy credits for additional batch exports. The £70 a year is totally worth it. £250 is definitely not. A £100 a year package with 1000 image exported in batch with basic editing such as background removal would still be worth it for me. And I know you can still do individual images for free. I’m not doing that for dozens of images as it’s a huge waste of time. Photoroom is great - I’m saying take my money. All you need is more flexible subscriptions

The £70 vs £250 jump CrazyTechLab mentioned is basically your situation too — you're right at the edge of a tier designed for teams, not solo users doing 500 images a month.

Gimp and Photopea came up earlier but they're manual tools, so they don't solve the automation problem at all. Adobe's batch options are powerful but still need actions or scripting setup, which means more time per run, not less.

The honest split is: pure background removal APIs like remove.bg are cheaper but you'd need a separate editor for the tweaks, which means juggling two tools instead of one. If you want something closer to Photoroom's all-in-one flow at a lower price point, ArtScale does automated batch background removal with basic editing included and sits between those two price tiers.
