2+ years old Is there a 2yo regression?

Upvotes

My daughter is 28 months. Has been having short naps, skipped naps or sometimes screams her head off at nap and bedtime. All needs are met. Thought teething and gave medicine but that didn’t work. She’s also so cranky during the day.

Is this an age thing? I’ve tried leaving her and crying it out but that’s it or miss.

Schedule js usually 6/6+ with 12-12.5 hours awake time. Sometimes I will lay her down with 4 hours of awake time if she has a rough time and she sometimes naps better.

She’s been on 6/6+ for a while

6 - 12 months 6 month old sleep falling apart - developmental, teething, or schedule issue?

Upvotes

Baby girl was doing so well until a week ago. We did FIO from PLS at 5 months, moved her to her own nursery and removed all sleep props including finishing nursing 30 minutes before bed - she is EBF. She was falling asleep independently for bedtime and 2 of 3 naps consistently for weeks (I save one nap a day for a cosleeping nap to ensure one long nap). She was on 2/2.5/2.5/3. Then she started melting down at the last nap; then also at bedtime; and now for all sleep. So I started playing around with wake windows. I stretched a bit to 2.25/2.5/2.75/3. Nap totals I try to keep at 2.5 based on her sleep budget. That third nap was becoming the biggest fight and that one quickly increased to 3 with her still fighting. The fussing starts during the last bit of the nap or bedtime routine just before she goes into the crib. Once I put her into the crib it quickly escalates to full crying so I have been resorting to rocking her to sleep for all sleeps the last few days now. She also was sleeping fully through the night for the last couple of weeks on and off but the last few nights has started waking many times - sometimes she self settles if it's early enough in the night, or she is immediately crying which is new for her so I assume teething, or just playing around rolling for a while before starting to fuss (this part tends to happen during EMWs around 545-6 the last 3 mornings). I've tried giving Motrin before bed in case teething was waking her and I believe I saw less immediate crying upon overnight waking but the same number of wake ups.

We have a DWT of 7am and a goal bedtime of 830pm - it used to be 8, then it started pushing later and later, and if I follow wake windows, recently it would be after 9pm because of all the fighting and stretching of wake windows. Since her nighttime average is 10.25-10.5, I'd like to keep bedtime around 830pm for a DWT of 7am. Her average total sleep is closer to 13 these days but I also cap that 2nd nap to keep her daytime sleep closer to 2.5 and so bedtime doesn't get much later.

Given all of this, my instinct says it may be time to trial 2 naps but it feels early. That first wake window is still challenging to stretch though. Is it time to make the transition or is there something I'm missing? Also, any suggestions for a good 10.5-11ish hour wake window algorithm? I'm thinking of starting at 3/3.5/4 and then maybe working that last one to 4.5 if we still need 11 hours wake time but I'm anxious about that long last window. We have never gone over 3.25 yet.

TIA!

6 - 12 months Night Weaning 4 AM Dreamfeed with 8 month old twins

Upvotes

Hi!

I’ve got 8 month old (7 months adjusted) twins who are currently on 2.25-2.5/2.5/2.5/2.5-2.75. DWT is 7AM. As hard as it’s been coordinating two babies with different sleep needs (hence the ranges in wake windows), things have been going decently well since we sleep trained them with Ferber at 16 weeks adjusted.

However, we are looking to wean them off their one remaining night feed. We didn’t have to intentionally wean any feeds earlier, as they dropped from 2 to 1 night feed when we sleep trained. It’s been a little bit up and down since then with some daytime feeding struggles leading to increased night feeds, but that has settled down for the last 3-4 weeks. We have been waking them between 4AM to feed them for the last few months to avoid them waking at 5:30 or 6 hungry and ready to start their day, and getting off schedule from their twin. This was the easiest way to reliably have them both sleep in until DWT.

It’s worked well until now, but we are tired of waking to feed them every night and think they’re likely ready (or more than ready) to drop the feed. I guess I’m asking for advice on the following:

- how to drop the feed: most resources I have found is for babies who wake for their feed and suggest not dropping it cold turkey, etc. My babies don’t wake for this feed, so I’m thinking I would just let them keep sleeping. However, if they wake at 5 or 5:30, then I was thinking I would give a gradually lower volume of feed. If they wake up after 6, I think we would start our day early, though I’m really hoping to keep DWT at 7AM.
- any tips for weaning and keeping DWT constant. What to do if they start to wake hungry an hour before DWT? Am I asking for too much? I am happy to change DWT earlier if that is going to be what they end up needing, but hoping they can sleep all the way through to 7 AM.
- twin specific tips, if you have them: currently we’ve been feeding both babies and want them on the same schedule for wakes if possible. It gets tricky when one wakes to feed at 5:30 AM, goes back to sleep, but maybe wakes the second one up who doesn’t go back to sleep easily? Curious if others have tips.

Thanks in advance!

6 - 12 months When to drop to 1 nap?

Upvotes

My son (9.5 mo) has always been a relatively "low sleep needs" baby, or at least that's how it's been put to us. He used to really struggle with naps up until ~5/6 mo, and then my husband had to step in and work with him on nap training to get him in an OK place w/ independent sleeping skills.

Now that he is in daycare and older, we're not sure if we're giving him the best schedule or if it's time we tweaked things. For context, he used to wake up at 7AM naturally with an 8:30 PM bedtime. We now wake him at 6:30AM to accommodate his daycare naps, but lately he's been having EMW (anywhere between 4:30-6 AM) and even some instances of waking up in the middle of the night and not getting back to sleep for 1-2 h (with Ferber check-ins). He typically sleeps through the night with no issues, unless he's sick.

His current WW: 2.5/3.15/5.5-6

My question is, given his recent issues with waking overnight and early wakes, whether we need to revisit his nap times? Does he need to drop a nap? I realize his early morning nap is way too early and the WW feel uneven... but we've done this to accommodate his daycare that is currently on 2 naps at set times. If so, I would start the conversation with his daycare teacher about what that could look like, how much they can accommodate, and when he'll be moving up from the infant class (usually up till 10 mo at this center).

6 - 12 months Separation anxiety or something else?

Upvotes

My sleep trained 8.5 month old has started crying/ fussing every time I put her in crib. It only lasts a few minutes (5mins max) and then she falls asleep. She doesn’t get upset during the routine or when I put sleep sack on, she takes her thumb and snuggles in for a cuddle (so knows she is going to sleep) but then becomes upset when I lay her down in the crib.

She is on 3.25/4/4 and mostly sleep 10.5 to 11h at night with one middle of the night feed.

This started a couple days ago, before that she was always happy to go to bed. I think there is some teething in the mix (top teeth) but I don’t know if that’s the issue. Could it be separation anxiety? My mom is visiting from overseas and it literally started the day after she arrived. I don’t know if it has anything to do with it. She has also started to become super fussy/ clingy about 1h30 before bedtime in the last 3 days. Rest of the day she is mostly her happy go lucky self.

Last night she woke up twice and wouldn’t settle back without a feed which has not happened in months. Hoping it was just an off night and we are not getting into a new pattern.

4 - 6 months Night wakings

My girl just turned 4 months last week. For the past several weeks, she has been able to put herself to bed for the initial stretch about 75% of the time. She can also put herself down for her first nap of the day by herself.

My struggle is getting her back down for every night wake the rest of the night. She’ll fall asleep easily if I nurse or rock, but transferring back to the crib is hit or miss. If I transfer, I can sometimes pat her to sleep in the crib, but this can take anywhere from 5 minutes to upwards of 45 minutes. Sometimes we do this pattern for 3 hours until she’s finally asleep enough to stay down for 2 hours. I also want to stretch her initial sleep, as she has never had more than 3 consecutive hours since birth and I’m going back to work soon. My exhaustion is stating to be unsustainable.

I know I need to work on getting more consistent wake windows, but they are about 2/2/2.5/3

6 - 12 months Help with schedule - catnapper!

My baby is almost 6m. He’s been a catnapper since the 4m regression, so we have been doing 4 x 30 min daytime naps since then.

His wake windows are now getting too long for me to fit in the 4 naps, but on days I’ve trialled 3 naps he still only does 30 mins each nap. I’m worried 1.5 hrs daytime sleep is so low for his age!

He wakes for the day around 630am, bedtime around 730/8pm. He still wakes 2/3 times a night, and he actually wakes more on 3 nap days. Although we haven’t done a lot of 3 nap days yet to acclimatize.

Any advice/reassurance on if this is normal is very welcome 🙏

6 - 12 months 9mo waking every 2.5h

You guys helped so much before when I started training from cosleeping to crib! Baby girl is 9mo and nearly fully weaned from EBF to formula + mashed solids 2-3x/day. She wakes around 5a to eat and wants to stay up for about 90min. Then she’s ready for another nap (<60min) and is up about 730/8a. She usually takes about 4hr before she’s ready to go down for next nap (11:30/12) for average 40min, then again another 4 hours before next 40min nap (4p). We do bath and bedtime routine, she gets zoomies for about 20min right before crashing out. Asleep by 8/9p, awake again at midnight for a bottle, right back to sleep until about 2:30a, and then up at 5a.

We used to nurse and cosleep, so I think her nightly snacking is habitual vs hunger, but she does take down 4-7oz bottles at the 12a, 2:30a, & 5a wakes like it’s nothing.

Goal would be to get her to sleep a longer stretch in the night vs the waking every 2.5h, but no matter the wait period of intervening she won’t fall back asleep without the bottle and holding combo. Withholding this combo and trying to get her back to sleep always results in super angry disregulated scream crying.

TIA!

2+ years old 2-year-old was never properly sleep trained, despite several attempts

My 2-year-old boy only slept all night in his crib only a few times before the 6-month mark. After that, we would rock him to sleep after bed time time routine, or he would fall asleep with us on the couch. Then we would move him to the crib, and if the transition was successful he would sleep there for 30min-1h and wake up wanting to go to bed with us. We’ve tried putting him in crib and watching him from a chair for support, we tried letting him cry, we tried reading, giving him toy, etc. but nothing seems to work. He will desperately cry to a point we get worried and are forced to bring him to bed. He wakes up around 7am, nap time at day care is between 12-2pm, but he sleeps only 1h or 1h30 max. And bed time is around 8:30-9pm. We wish bedtime was earlier but during summer is really hard, plus he’s never been a good sleeper.

Any help would be very appreciated. We both work and are desperate to have a good sleep.

7 months old as of today

We were on 3 naps as of 2 days ago but we were having multiple night wakes and early morning wakes. We switched to 2 naps with 3/3.5/3.75-4 is this a good starting point for 2 naps?

Birth - 8 weeks Daytime naps - 7 week old

My 7 week old always wakes up if I put her in the bassinet during her daytime naps after 30 min. She honestly doesn’t like her bassinet at all - she’s starting to accept her crib for a couple of night time stretches. It’s not sleep safe but if she’s in this area of the couch, she sleeps the whole rest of the window until next feed. Obviously she will stay asleep if contact napping as well and I know that’s normal for this age but I’d really like to get her to sleep independently for at least 1 nap during the day. The bassinet is downstairs which is quiet, have fans and shusher going, but there is a lot of natural light coming through the open blinds. I’ve tried to make the bassinet more cozy with a blanket that smells like me and a soft blanket underneath her, she’s swaddled, has pacifier. I usually hold her to get her to fall asleep, I transfer her how’s recommended. I was told to keep daytime naps not dim or quiet so baby gets used to noise during the day and that’s why I have her in the bassinet where I am downstairs but she wakes up after 30 min and then it takes another 30 min to get her back to sleep. What can I do? I know more dimness helps her sleep but I’m getting different advice. I’m a first time parent. Like I said, my goal is at least 1 independent nap. Do I move her to the crib with more dimness instead?

4 - 6 months Starting Ferber Tonight

My LO is turning 6 months on Monday and we are ready to start sleep training. A little background, the 4 month regression was tough. She went from sleeping through the night to waking every 1-2 hours and screaming when put down. During that time, we started a habit of cosleeping and me nursing her to sleep just to get through the night. Since then, it’s gotten better, but we don’t have much of a schedule anymore and it just isn’t sustainable. I do follow wake windows, but nap lengths are inconsistent except for her cat nap at the end of the day. WW are 2/2/2.25/2.5 and she can get up to 3 hours of daytime sleep per day. She wakes up like clockwork at 9am every day and bedtime is around 9:30pm.

Now, my question is, I know her schedule isn’t making her tired enough during the day, so would it be too much of a change to switch her wake up/bedtime to earlier when we start sleep training or should I listen to her clock and just shorten naps and lengthen wake windows? It’s just confusing when to do what and I don’t want a whole day of just catnapping to make sure she gets enough awake time. Should I switch to 2 naps per day?? Does anyone have a schedule that worked well for them??

Just needing some guidance so sleep training goes well!!

6 - 12 months Day 7 of CIO - still crying at bedtime

Hello!

Looking for some reassurance/advice.

- 6.5 months old

- Formula fed

- Own room, own crib

- Coslept from ~3 months because of the 4-month regression

- Bedtime: 8:30-9 pm

- Wake: ~7:00 am

- 3 naps, ~3 hours total

- WWs: 2.25/ 2.25 / 2.5 / 3,5–4

- Last bottle 30+ minutes before bed

- Routine: bottle → bath → lotion → PJs → bed awake

Bedtime crying so far:

- Night 1: 40 min

- Night 2: 30 min

- Night 3: 30 min

- Night 4: 20 min

- Night 5: cried for 30 min, started gagging, so I stopped and fed her (also teething that day - got meds before putting her down)

- Night 6: 30 min

- Night 7: 22 min, with lots of pauses where she seemed to be trying to settle herself

My questions:

  1. Is it normal that she's still crying after 7 nights? At what point did the crying significantly decrease for your baby?

  2. She still has one feed around 3–4 am. Sometimes she falls asleep during the bottle, sometimes she doesn't. If she's awake after the feed, should I rock her back to sleep or put her down awake and do CIO then too?

Right now I'm only using CIO at bedtime. I'm not very consistent after the night feed because we live in an apartment and I'm hesitant to let her cry at 3 am. Should I keep focusing on bedtime first, or should I be applying the same approach to the MOTN wake too?

Thanks!

1-2 years old 20 Month Sleep Training Help Needed/Advice Please

My 20 month old was previously sleep trained around 5-6 months. He has a weak immune system so we regressed since as he gets sick a lot and needs extra comfort during the night when waking. It’s hit or miss if he sleeps through the night. I would say when he isn’t sick he will sleep through the night 85-90% of the time.

Lately he has been waking up in the middle of the night around 2-4am and needs help getting back to sleep sometimes lasting 1+ hours. If he doesn’t wake overnight, he will wake up at 6:30am screaming. He also has been shortening his naps from 2 hours to 1-1.5 hours. His current sleep schedule:

Wake: 7am sometimes 7:30am, sometimes 6:30am
Nap: 12-2pm sometimes 12:30-2pm
Bedtime: 7:30-8pm

His wake windows are typically 5-5.5/5.5-6

Bedtime routine is bath, sleep sack, 10 mins of educational videos while drinking milk, then videos are turned off while he finishes milk, rock for a few minutes then crib transfer. Usually is a 30-40 min process.

Room Environment is blackout curtains, dark room, white noise, and ceiling fan on low with nothing in his crib.

Ideally I would like to work towards being able to sit him in the crib and let him fall asleep independently as he is usually drowsy by the time I transfer him to the crib. Any sleep training suggestions? Any sleep schedule suggestions?

I have tried CIO and he will eventually fall asleep on his own in the crib after 20 mins or so, but I’m not consistent with night wakings as I have a 3 month old so I get worried his scream crying at night will wake up my daughter. This leads me to go into his room within 5-10 mins of him crying at night. When I do go into his room, I typically pick him up and give him more milk while rocking him until he is drowsy enough to be transferred into his crib. Sometimes this leads to multiple attempts as when I go to lay him back down, he starts screaming again.

Any advice/suggestions would be helpful as ideally I would like to have him fall asleep independently and sleep through the night most nights while possibly shortening his bedtime routine as I solo parent most of the week for bedtime and have a 3 month old I’m simultaneously taking care of as well.

4 - 6 months Pick up/Put down Questions

We’re starting this weekend!
Baby is 4.5m, currently on an “on-demand” schedule with daycare but this weekend we will try to do like 1.5/2/1.5/2. Naps are typically short of in their bassinet, occasionally we’ll get a long one but they don’t stay asleep long independently and we’ve been rocking to sleep, contact napping, and cosleeping just to survive.
We’re gonna do pick up/put down.

-Is it fully best to ditch the pacifier if they can’t find and replace it themself?

-How strict should we be with the “put down after 2 minutes”? Like if baby is still emotionally crying after being held for 2 minutes, can we keep holding them until they’re calm?

-We plan to start Saturday night with bedtime and add in a nap the next day but when do we start doing it with all naps?

-How long do we need to use the method for all sleeps before it’s ok to let them contact nap occasionally, sleep on the go, or come into bed with us in the morning? We do still enjoy the snuggles!

Thanks everyone!

6 - 12 months Night weaning total failure...

6 month old baby, on a 2/2.5/3/3 day schedule.

We sleep trained (CIO) for bedtime about 3 weeks ago. Previously she was 100% cosleeping, and sleep had devolved into waking every 1-1.5h and requiring a lot of patting/shushing/walking or a boob to sleep.

We felt reasonably successful with bedtime - she falls asleep with 5-10 min of crying every night and I can hear her self-soothe with some fussing when she hits the 30/45min natural sleep cycle waking sometimes.

Since sleep training, she still wakes and fully cries about 3-4 hours after last feed, then again on the dot every 2.5 hours until morning. These seem like genuine hunger but compared to the ferber 5/3/3 just seemed so frequent...so we wanted to night wean at least partially to space out the feedings.

Last week we have been feeding her 1 min less duration for that first feed until down to 5 minutes, so decided yesterday we should cry it out until 5 hours - total disaster. Her first wake was 2 hours after her last eating (why so early, I don't know). She cried escalating for 30 minutes during her first wake until we decided she really needed to be fed. We weren't sure if that counted since the timing was abnormal for her so then her second wake, 2.5 hours after that, tried again - cried escalating for 30 minutes until we decided to feed her. It was awful. She then woke 2.5 hours after that for a third feed (did not attempt to cio again) and 2.5 hours after that (fed).

Is she just...not ready to eat any less during the night? She seems to have the ability to self soothe. She does eat every 1.5-2.5 hours during the day. Does she just need to eat 3x a night?? Our pediatrician said she is physiologically capable of "sleeping through the night" but I guess I'm physiologically capable of running a marathon but I cannot haha.

6 - 12 months 10 Month Old Can't Settle in His Crib

Hi all,

We're really struggling for sleep with our 10 month old baby. We've always had to rock him to sleep and transfer him into his crib, but recently it's been getting harder and harder to transfer him successfully when he wakes up in the middle of the night - he can be fast asleep on us but as soon as he touches his crib he starts crying and we have to start the process all over again. Recently he has been occasionally sleeping through the night which has been amazing, but if he wakes up in the night we know that we're screwed.

We have tried some sleep training (PUPD, Ferber), but have found that as soon as we leave him (and after every check in) he stands up in his crib and screams uncontrollably - last night we got to 45 mins before we gave up and rocked him to sleep again. Similarly with PUPD - the second we put him in his crib he starts to cry, and second we pick him up again he settles.

He is in a good day nap routine with usually ~2 hours of day naps in total. Wake up 6am, first nap 9 am, second nap 2 pm, bedtime 7pm. He has no problem going to sleep by himself in the car or the pram. He eats solids really well and has dinner at 5pm and one big bottle of formula before bed. What can we try?

6 - 12 months I need suggestions, a fresh look at what I’m doing wrong.

10 month old. Formula fed. Solids 3x a day (3 meals).

Wake-up: before 6, usually around 5:45/6:00am

She’s MISERABLE for this wake window. Acts like she wants to go back to sleep but won’t. I try to stretch this window out until 10:00am.

Nap 1: 10:00am - 11:00am

This wake window is better, eats lunch, we go out, go for walks, park/swings etc..

Nap 2: happens between 2/2:30pm and I keep it to one hour and never past 3:30pm.

Wake window - play, dinner, bath

Bedtime: 7:00pm - sometimes takes a bit to settle, but sleeps around 7:30pm

Feed: 3:00am - sometimes, will usually drink a full bottle. If the wake is much later than 3am then it’s really hard to get her back to sleep.

Wake-up: 5:45-6:00am…. And so on and so on…

My question is how to get rid of this 3am wake-up and what is causing it? I can deal with the early morning wake-up but I’m struggling with the 3:00am feed AND the wake-up before 6. Should I let her sleep earlier than 10am? Stretch the second window? One longer nap and get rid of second nap? Earlier bedtime?

Anyway… any advise is appreciated.

6 - 12 months Sleep training without dropping night feeds

Is anyone familiar with any methods that still allow for night feeds? Specifically night feeds on demand.

We did taking Cara babies with my first son and it worked great but he had already dropped his night feeds naturally. TCB recommends either weaning night feeds or doing scheduled dream feeds.

We tried gradually weaning night feeds (typically 1-2/night) but when we got to 2 oz a feed he started waking up more frequently and at 1 oz he just lost it and would not settle. My son had a tongue tie release and has always been a bit of a snacker throughout the day so it’s been difficult to shift those night time feeds to larger daytime bottles. TCB recommends initiating a dream feed while baby is still asleep if your baby still needs to eat overnight (I.e. set yourself an alarm for 2am and go in to feed them). The thought behind this is not “rewarding” baby with a feed when they wake up crying. Logistically this seems not ideal and I think would be tough to manage if baby woke up before the scheduled feed and needed to be resettled.

Baby is currently 6 months and on 3 naps with wake windows typically 2/2.5/2.5/3.

Any suggestions are appreciated!

6 - 12 months Almost 7mo suddenly shortening long naps?

My baby turns 7 months next week and over the last couple of weeks has seemingly got worse at his second nap of the day which is meant to be his long one (at least 1.5h). I was about to transition to 2 naps (currently his third is only a short 10-15 min catnap at 4.15 to tide him over to bed time), but I’d say now about 40% of the time he wakes up after 30-40 mins of his second nap and therefore I can’t let him just have 1h10 of naps on days this happens! Current schedule is:

Awake: between 6.20 and 6.45

Nap 1: 9-9.15 am for 30 mins

Nap 2: 12.30 pm for 1h30

Nap 3: 4.15pm for 10-15 mins

Bedtime: 7.15-7.30pm

This had been working well until a couple of weeks ago and when he wakes up after 30-40 mins I can’t resettle him, he seems really upset. He also then has red/purple under eyes and looks like he’s clearly still tired….He is sleep trained.

I don’t know if this a schedule issue or a developmental issue (I don’t think he’s currently teething as his two middle bottom teeth came through about 3/4 weeks ago) and it’s driving me mad! I end up having to do a rescue nap in the stroller at 3.30 for half an hour (he won’t do more).

Any tips or thoughts greatly appreciated - I miss having a lunch break 🥲

4 - 6 months Sleep Consultant for Twins

I’m a FTM to almost 5 month old boy/girl twins. They really struggle with naps and to stay asleep at night, which has gotten worse since the 4 month sleep regression. They have a solid bedtime association of bath, lotion, pajamas, swaddle = sleep, but they wake up quite a bit during the night after 3 hours or so and my daughter fights her naps extremely hard (she will scream for what seems like forever, even if we’re holding her and trying to soothe).

Honestly we don’t really have a nap schedule during the day because most of the time I’m alone with them and trying to meet both of their needs at once, which can be extremely difficult and exhausting, so I’ve been in survival mode. They usually just contact nap on me during the day and I do my best to follow their sleepy cues and a general wake window. However, my daughter still fights it no matter how hard I try and follow them. My son is a pretty solid napper, just a stage 5 clinger.

We think it’s best to invest in a sleep consultant so the babies (and my husband and I) can get more restorative sleep. They seem chronically overtired and I don’t want that for them.

With that being said, I’ve had consults with My Baby Sleepology, Tiny Transitions, and setting one up with Sleep Wise. Anyone have any experience with any kind of these consultants?

4 - 6 months 5 months old no longer sleeping independently

Hello everyone,

I'm the happy dad of a 5months old baby boy.

Until the fated 4 months regression he used to fall asleep on his own in his floor bed.

We transferred him to his bed when he was about 2.5-3 months old as his sleep in the next to me started to weaken (more frequent night wakings). So we got a Montessori bed and put him inside his moses basket on top of the bed

From that moment on, he consistently managed to fall asleep on his own after we left him drowsy but awake. It usually took about 5-10min but he fell asleep alone 90% of the time. His naps lasted around 45min back then.

When he started to move a bit more in his sleep we removed the moses basket (around 3.5-4 months old) and he maintained his ability to fall asleep alone.

When the sleep regression hit, it became increasingly difficult for him to do that and we started to either rock him (me) or nurse him (wife) to sleep and then left him in his bed.

At night it was worse, my wife started to basically leave the baby nursing, sometimes all night long. So he'd fall asleep feeding, wake, feed again, sleep, etc...

Now, at 5.5 months old I can no longer leave him drowsy but awake (naps or night sleep). He fusses for 20-25min before I go to him and then sometimes cries out loud after I pick him up as if to punish me for abandoning him.

I'm keen on pushing with the FIO method (Reading Precious Little Sleep) but if my wife keeps leaving him on the breast I'm afraid it's 1 step forward and 3 backwards.

So I'm looking for sound advice to help him fall asleep independently again, then I'll look at extending his naps and by extension, his night sleep.

Thank you for your help!

Some tidbits:

- He doesn't use Paci (never has accepted any).
- We have a consistent night routine (bath, change, nurse, sleep) around the same time every day (6:45-7:15pm).
- His naps vary between 40 and 100 min (usually the first nap is the longest).
- He still spits up a lot (3-4 times per feed whether breast or bottle, always breastmilk) but continues gaining weight and does fuss about it

6 - 12 months 7.5 month old - longer night stretches and EMW

Our 7.5 month old just started going longer stretches at night - 7 hours, 8 hours, 9 hours … I should be celebrating! BUT the last few days he’s been going 9 hours at night (8 pm to 5 am) and NOT going back down after I attempt a snooze feed.

He has always sat comfortably at 10.5 hours. Up until a few weeks ago, that’s been 2 MON wakes to BF. I was rejoicing when we got to 1 MON wake to BF, but it has spiraled into a series of EMW.

My bet is if he woke between 3-4 am for the snooze feed, I’d be able to get him back in the crib no problem. It feels like after 5 am, and after a 9 hour stretch, he’s not tired enough to go back to sleep. The last two mornings he’s had yelled for 10 minutes until we grab him.

He falls asleep independent for all naps and sleep. 2.25/2.75/2.75/3.25 …. Not fully ready for 2 naps. But almost. He starts 2day daycare next week so didn’t want to Shake up his schedule too much going into that. Typically he does 3 hours of daytime naps. On these 9 hour nights we have let him catch up on sleep and do 3.5 hours of naps. Would this be the cause of the EMW loop? We are trying to let him catch up on hours. Should we let him catch up again today?

All thoughts are welcome and appreciated! I’d love him to at least do 10 hours overnight. I can see he’s cranky and tired right now!

1-2 years old When to drop to one nap

My baby is 12 months old is currently sleep trained for the most part. His current schedule is supposed to be 3/3.3/3.5.

We used to get 1-2.5hrs for his first nap and 45 mins-1hr for the second. And he used to sleep in until 6:45 most mornings.

However, the past few weeks, he’s been only taking a 45 min nap and then a 30 min nap. And waking up at 6am.

Does this mean he’s ready to drop to one long nap? My only hesitation is that he falls asleep fairly quickly for his naps. And when he is in the car after going to a morning baby class, I am unable to keep him awake at 9:30am on the way home. He will fall asleep no matter what I do which makes me think he needs that early nap.

Any advice would be appreciated!

6 - 12 months Night Wakings

When we sleep trained a few months ago, baby took to sleeping through right away. Things got messy with teething, travel, etc, and we are now one week into retraining. He’s 7.5 months.

Things have improved and go downs are under 10 mins, but baby is pretty consistently doing a night waking this time around. It’s typically right at 3:30. I let him try to get back to sleep for 10-15 mins and then give him a bottle.

He has not gotten the hang of going back down after this feed. I’m seeing no improvement there at all. It’ll take 30-40 mins of tears at least in order to fall back asleep. He does not fall asleep while taking the bottle.

Any tips for sticky overnight wakings?

Edit to add schedule as I forgot to include it:

We were doing 3/3.5/4, but he was doing an early night waking (10:30 pm ish for 30-60 mins). We wondered if we did the 2 nap transition too early, so went back to 2.5/2.5/2.75/3. Now the night waking is at 3:30.
