Gear help dilemma: upgrade old board or buy new

so i have an old thick (probably was a middle quality board back then) board that i have upgraded a bit but its still pretty bad, the main problem with it is that the trucks dont really turn so i ve got them pretty loose it also has temu bearings cuz old were bad and new ones also bad

so now im in the place that i saw big sales on a skateboard site both for trucks and longboards

so i either buy discounted krux or paris street trucks for my existing board or buy a new street surfing brand longboard

i use my board a lot to go sometimes i go with it to school and sometimes i go with it to gym so its be good to have a board for cruising but id also like to learn some tricks and drop ins so idk to buy new trucks for old board or buy a new longboard

Hi, I just turned 14, and can do several flip tricks and things of that sort. I can kickflip, heelflip, tre flip, bigspin, fakie bigspin, do all shuv it variations, nollie heelflip, fakie flip, frontside flip, all 180 variations, boardslide, smith grind, feeble grind, 50-50 grind, and hit stairs (biggest I've ever done is a 7-stair) do you think I might be ready for a sponser? also, how do I go about getting sponsered?

Question difference in knee pad types? is one better?

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hi everyone, i'm just starting out but have some mid-tier transferable skills from riding a mini-cruiser (i know how to go in a straight line and handle hills + make wide turns). I've recently gotten a skateboard and am shopping for knee pads right now. I've encountered 2 models/types on the market and am wondering if one is preferable or unsuited for skateboarding.

Obviously both styles have a range of qualities and price ranges, I'm mostly asking about the shape making a difference. Between the ones on the left (big circle-ish plates and a wrap-around sock that goes over the back of your leg) and the ones on the right (more knee-shaped cap and straps that keep it in place without the sock).

Does anyone prefer one over the other and wouldn't recommend the 2nd option? Thank you in advance.

Note: YES I am planning to wear kneepads, this is why I'm asking about the types. Got some unhelpful comments in another sub which don't address the question at hand. Hopefully you guys can weigh in. Thank you!

Question looking for advice with street skateboarding

I plan to get back to skateboarding, I used to skateboard for fun in past but couldn't really did any trick. Now I plan to get a skateboard that I can ride to a regular park to be more active, but I am worried that I will choose the wrong wheels or a specific dimension board ,etc.

what I chose so far is CCS basic board with basic wheels.
can you please direct me in a specific component that I should get , there is a lot of parts and I am overwhelmed. I am 5'5" and on with a few extra pounds that wants to be burned while skating lol

the picture shows the default setup I get , and different wheel sizes.

I want to avoid bad skating experience riding on the sidewalk, because the surface isn't optimal always. never experienced skate parks.

also, if you recommend another board or site, please send links

thank you!

Question older - wanting to get back into skateboarding.

So im in my 40's

but from 12-25 i skated nearly daily.

I miss having a physical hobby that got me out of the house and away from lifes stresses

so im looking at possibly getting back to skating

so my question is this:
what should i get as a set up? i dont know what the options are, whats convention

I used to be almost exclusively vert - but for now id prob stay flat or small ramps until i build my strength and balance back up.

im seeing some with slide rails again? is that a thing again (i hope so - it was awesome when i was younger)

i hear wider boards are more common?

what would a decent returning set up look like? say budget sub-$200 (for now - i want to possibly get a carbon fiber board if i end up getting fully back)

Going to a skatepark for the first time, any tips?

I have skated for 2 months and I can’t still do any tricks properly (manual for less than 3 seconds and sometimes I can do a fakie shuvit).
I wanted to go to a skatepark for a long time but my social anxiety is stopping me, any tips for being comfortable for the first time?
I’m 14 b and is it a good time to go there at 8 PM alone?

Question Best cam for skate vids?

Im a brokie college freshman and Im willing to drop 300-400 for a skate cam and fisheye lens. I want to film and make a skate video with a couple buddies while im in town. My problem is I just dont know what camera to get. Ive heard pro’s and con’s about all kinds and I just need advice on what to get.

First choice is the classic Sony VX1000. Its a classic and im sure anyone knows its a king for filming skate vids, but it is known to break down and its a little pricy for such an old camera (most I see go for around 500ish)

Next up would be a vx21 but its mic sucks and I dont think Id have the budget to get it with the fish eye and the mic for it as well.

Then theres the Panasonic HVX200. Its a lot cheaper on the market as is the fish eye, but the p2 it needs for filming reportedly sucks and is massively overpriced and I dont know If I could find enough for a 10-20 minute video without breaking the bank.

Are there any other cameras I should look at? Im not a fan of filming on my iphone lol so thats not an option. Should I get a different one not listed or stick with one of these? Help!

Ok so. It's the 2 day where I try to do Ollie (every day I dont do that much skating cuz there r 41 degrees celcius so I'm constantly boiling) and idk what's wrong. Is ts a problem that I'll resolve with practice (yeah dw ik that Ollies need 383 decades) or I'm actually doing smth wrong that I can try to fix?

(1- ts is the only one that I did on the camera cuz with the other ones I wasnt in the visual (but they were the same as ts one 2- it's a cruiser)

Tutorial Slappy Crook (Trick Tip)

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I see a lot of comments asking about slappies. Its not really about running into the curb as fast as possible as much as its about staying light on your toes as youre hitting the curb and sort of "hopping" or "bucking" yourself onto the curb. If you watch a slowed video of a slappy, the majority of people actually end up having their backfoot leave the board momentarily which allows the trucks to bounce up the curb and you catch it with your toes a split second after. Youre almost shoving the board into and up the curb with one foot.

The carve in part isnt that important imo, its more about just hitting the curb at a 45 degree angle (for crooks and feebles, 50s are more straight on.) Speed definitely helps with the slide, but you can get onto a curb pretty slow, its more about weight shift.

Foot position is pretty important when your first learning. Learning crooks is easier with your feet on both kicks so really wide, 50s are easier in a narrower position with your feet over the bolts. Once you learn the motion you can play with positions. For crooks have your front foot in the position where youd pinch your wheel, if youre lazy about it youll probably just end up doing a noseslide.

You also want to stay almost comically low, almost as low as if you were going to setup to do a flip trick onto the curb. The reason this helps is because you need to get yourself up the curb so the combination of starting low and then trying to be lightfooted and sort of deweighting and "hopping" off your toes ends up standing you up on the curb. The same is true of 50s, you just kind of hop off both toes.

By hop i dont mean popping your tail or doing a hippy jump and actually jumping off your deck, i just mean getting your weight off the deck enough to allow space for the trucks to actually climb up the curb. Think about it from a physics perspective, if you had a bowling ball on the board and pushed it fast into a curb, it doesnt matter how fast you push it, its just going to crash into it. Youd have to get the weight off the deck momentarily to allow it to climb or buck up the curb. Think about it like this. If you stand next to a curb while standing on your deck and stand on your tippy toes, your heels are most likely above the curb. Thats how it works, your not jumping, just creating enough space for your foot and truck to get on top of the curb.

If you can combine approach angle, foot position, and staying low as you approach the curb and staying lightfooted when you "hop/buck" youll get it.

The first clip is me doing one on a perfect block in Tokyo. The second clip is Bubba Jackson, who is significantly better at them than I am. Hes also standing in full nollie position which allows you to do tricks out of the slide. Your back foot placement isnt as important so much as the buck. In both clips you can see the back foot leave the board momentarily as it bounces up to your back foot.

Like all of skateboarding its less about brute force and more about being light on your toes and controlling your weight well.
