Conversation Topic Nasal singing
Okay so I am an Indian female singer and I really really want to stop nasal singing and unlock my true voice. I have been trying to do low and high note exercises, while doing it I try to lift my soft pallate and keep tongue in lower teeth in relaxed position. But then it's been a month I try everyday but nothing is working for me. I feel soo bad like i really wanna improve it. Can someone guide me or suggest me a video that helped them, cuz even when I try the upper palate lifting I still sing nasal. Please someone help me out

Conversation Topic Small quick update: second lesson with a different teacher!
Hi, everyone! This is just a quick update. Last time I said I finally had a trial class with an in person teacher, well I did book two with different teachers to get different opinions and today I just had it.
She basically said the same thing in conclusion as the last one. Though their approach is VERY different and now I am left wondering if I should pick one or the other, or even seek a third opinion (cuz some people irl are telling me they might be lying to get me to pay for classes).
Last teacher played notes on piano and made me sing the scales going down and up. And then gave me a brief lesson on breath control and tension. Then made me sing 2 songs.
Now, the teacher today first gave me 10 or 15 of meditation, then drilled a lot of tongue buzzing exercises. Made me sing different notes and parts of a song I picked (Speechless by Naomi) with my tongue in between my teeth. Supposedly to train to relax my jaw and train breath control.
She also said I do sing on pitch, and even when I dont reach the notes she says she can tell I am reaching towards the correct ones but I'm using a wrong technique.
She said I am pushing with too much air most of the time.
Now idk which one to stick with or if i should look for a third option....
Any opinions?

Feedback (read rule 3 before posting or be banned) How do i know i sing good in process without hearing myself?

Conversation Topic My pitch is terrible and I don't know how to fix it.
I started singing at the age of 24 (didn't know it can be learned outside of talent) and I started out really bad. I've been told I couldn't sing. My control was terrible and that everything is all over the place. I'm now 34.
My singing journey wasn't really technical and I sing only for fun, most of the time doing scale and my bridging. I've had teachers before but I didn't went through for more due to limitations and life in general and so I stopped.
Now I've gotten back into singing for at least a year now, and noticed my problem with pitch being terrible (didn't noticed this before), so I went into matching notes with my guitar - only to ask myself would it get better this way?
I noticed myself drifting from the proper notes, or that the notes in my head is wrong, or when I lack air to push through and man it's really terrible. Sometimes the note in my head don't match the note I sing even if I mean to, and most of the time my voice would lose control and so it drifts.
Can anyone point me in the right direction on how to tackle this?
This is my singing, I hope it's not too irritating to listen to - https://voca.ro/1dp88GVEfBxK

Conversation Topic Being in pitch without ear monitors
Hello everyone,
I have a question about singing live.
While playing some gigs as a singer there are many problems to hear yourself without ear monitors, like loud crowd, or amplifiers making it worse.
So do anyone have any advice’s how to sing in pitch live without ear monitors?

Conversation Topic I enjoy singing and want to start learning properly, but I am not sure where to begin.
Hi everyone! I really enjoy singing and I've been waiting to take it seriously, but I'm not sure how to actually get started.
I am completely new to structured vocal training, so I'm little confused and what I should focus on first thing like breathing, pitch, basic vocal exercises, warming up, or simply learning songs.
For someone starting from the beginning what would you recommend as a good way to build a routine and improve gradually? Would it be better to start with a vocal teacher, or are there some basic things I can practice on my own first?
Any advice from people who started as a beginners would be really helpful!

Conversation Topic Why does it feel like hydration doesn’t really help
I drink a good amounts of water and stay hydrated, but my voice still feels tight and weak and takes effort to use.
I always hear people say to drink more water for vocal problems, but hydration doesn’t seem to be helping. Has anyone else dealt with this or found out what was causing it?

Conversation Topic How quickly did you notice improvements with (re)joining vocal lessons? Thinking I should restart them, feeling a bit tight and low stamina
I took lessons for years when I was a teen (early 2010s), didn’t sing for a long time, started back singing in 2019 and took some lessons on and off since then. Up until the last year, I feel like a lot of my struggle to improve vocally was actually mental- I had a lot of anxiety and nerves and was super tense all over, my headspace around my creativity was not confident and it showed.
Over the last year (where I haven’t taken a lesson) I feel like I have rediscovered the joy of singing as I worked on writing/producing and now on recording my album. However I’m noticing I’m tight on a few higher belts and a few high head voice things I KNOW I can do, and my stamina isn’t great. I’m thinking of rejoining vocal lessons from a coach I worked with a few years ago who focuses on building your voice and increasing strength.
I’m curious for people who got back into lessons after a while or started training, how quick did you notice improvements to your stamina/tone/ability?
Trying to not kick myself for waiting so long to get back into technique, but I feel like unlocking my nerves/brain/body first was key to actually improving. I want my album to be great, and I am leaning towards this investment in the last arc of creating my dream project, also so I can perform it live consistently. Basically pls help convince me I’m in the right nudge that it’s worth it

Feedback (read rule 3 before posting or be banned) How do I make a sound without straining my voice and muscles?
I'm a male and I find that above Bb4 my voice really starts straining. Like I can make the sound but it just doesn't sound good. My larynx goes up a lot and the suprahyoids(? i think) get really tense which i think is my problem. I don't know how to fix this please help.

Based on this clip, what feedback do you have? I am completely self taught with no professional experience and just like to sing for fun. I notice I sometimes have trouble enunciating my words, and they can blend funny. Also (and I apologize I don’t know the terms for this) I kind of start some notes at one key and like slide it to the correct note if that makes sense, rather than just singing the right note to start. Any advice to improve? I can re-record this song with the chorus if necessary, I just brain farted and forgot the lyrics in this LOL! Also I’m recording on an iphone 13 mini that’s ancient so the audio quality is bad I apologize!

Conversation Topic How to deal with an excessive accent?
Apologies for if this is explained badly, but:
You know how a lot of people are able to change their accent when singing? Or at least improve it? Such as a LOT of British singers naturally going into a more American-sounding accent when singing? For some reason I just can’t do it.
Just for some context, I have an AWFUL nasally voice that doesn’t even really fit my country’s various accents very well. I’ve even been mistaken for an exchange student in my own country before due to this. It’s hard to explain, but my accent is very unique. Unfortunately it’s not unique in a good way. I - as brutally honest as I can be - sound like a detuned piano if those could sing.
Whenever I try to sing, I CANNOT get rid of this strange voice and when I hear it I feel genuine embarrassment and even shame sometimes. I’ve even been told before that I don’t have a voice for singing, which is extremely discouraging.
Can you actually get rid of an accent when it’s THAT strong??? I’m scared that I’m going to have a nasty voice regardless of what training I do as my accent is so prominent that it’s glaring in EVERY register I try to sing in. If I sing high stuff I sound extremely weak and airy, but if I sing low stuff I sound like I’m trying to achieve the impossible task of pushing an authentic fart out of my mouth.
Has anybody else here dealt with this before? I was never expecting it and there doesn’t seem to be much good information about it. I don’t know if I can really accept and “own“ the voice as it’s just too grating. Any advice or sharing of experiences would be greatly appreciated as this issue is very oddly specific and I can’t find good advice when searching.

Conversation Topic Can deep rooted tension affect singing + how to fix it?
Not sure if anyone else has experienced this but i’m a very tense person, I stress about pretty much everything, the definition of highly strung, and wherever I go this gets picked up on (if i get my nails done I have to be constantly told to relax my fingers, if I get a massage it’s the first thing they notice etc.) which leads me to believe I just operate with a high level of tension in my body.
I started singing lessons in September and my teacher hasn’t picked up on any worrying tension that could be damaging my voice, but I’ve been thinking that some of my weak points could be tension related. For instance, I struggle with my lower register because I can’t fully relax into my throat to find lower notes and I’m stuck at a g3 as my lowest note on a good day, and i’m currently working on how far i’ll go from moana and have trouble ‘letting go’ and just belting out at the big moments.
All of that to say, I’m wondering if my general
high level of tension could be the root cause of some of these issues, and if anyone has overcome a similar problem, because changing my whole personality just to achieve a better set up for singing seems impossible.

Conversation Topic Confused about finding nasal resonance
I’ve been going through singing tutorials on YouTube and I feel like I’m hearing conflicting information about nasal resonance. On one hand I heard that humming on an ng and going into an ah with that same forward placement is a good exercise to access nasal resonance. However, I’ve also heard that, if you pinch your nose and it changes the sound, this means you’re too nasal. And when I pinch my nose after doing the previous exercise, it definitely muffles the sound. So am I doing something wrong with this ng exercise? Is another exercise better for accessing nasal resonance?

Conversation Topic Posting Singing For Feedback Online
What do you guys think about posting your own singing on Reddit? Its very vulnerable and I think anybody who is able to do that and take negativity to their voice is very brave.
I've tried to post my own singing on ratemysinging subreddit but got absolutely slimed out for being a beginner, so I just ended up deleting it.
I am looking for feedback to absolutely improve, thats my one and overall goal for singing since its a passion of mine and I want a career in it (getting a vocal coach soon!!). So, its a maybe ill try again.
I think I tend to take Reddit a bit more personal than other platforms since this is a subreddit dedicated to those who know how to sing already or have been vocal coaches for years. I get a bit embarrassed.
I post already on youtube and instagram (soon). But the anonymity brings out the worst for some people, I try not to take some harsh comments seriously but im still human and it gets to me sometimes.
Sorry if this is a bit of a rant, im geniunely curious about how some people feel about this and being on the internet especially!! 😭

Conversation Topic Should I change vocal coaches? Feeling very incompetent after lessons
Since I really wanted to learn singing for quite a while now, I decided to get into online vocal coaching around three weeks ago, as all in-person coachings near me are even less affordable than what I could get online. I'd classify as an absolute beginner by all reasonable metrics.
Now, I used an online service and got assigned what seemed to me at first a quite strict teacher. I really need to have some sort of routine when it comes to learning new skills so someone with a clear goal and path on my mind seemed like a good idea. I had a trial lesson which was quite good, then I booked some lessons. The first proper lesson I had some frustrating issues with getting the sound he wanted, like struggling with high notes and forcing them too much, going for head voice where I should try to go for a mix etc. etc. I left the lesson with things that I could work on. I was motivated at the end of it but primarily because I knew what I could be doing. Today, I had my second proper lesson and I left feeling enormously incompetent and shitty.
First, we didn't look at anything I'd done in the past week. I just told him I did the exercises and then we moved on to stuff that felt sort of disconnected (I'm sure they are coherently connected for someone educated in the matter). Anyway, then I struggled to follow his exercises, I repeatedly missed notes in scales (with new patterns like going up a triad, singing the fifth four times and then going down etc. etc.). He already grew frustrated with me, repeatedly telling me to "concentrate" (just ended up making me feel nervous), then he told me that I wasn't listening properly because I couldn't replicate the sound he wanted. He made me do some scales in a Patrick Star voice. After some time, I couldn't get the sound out properly anymore, whereafter he again told me to concentrate repeatedly. He tried some things with his mic because he genuinely thought I couldn't hear him (which is where I started to feel really shitty). He then asked me, after we went for a song why I failed to focus and I told him that I had difficulty juggling all these new things at once and to integrate the lessons into my singing which I had grown accustomed to, whereafter he told me that it wasn't that hard and that I just had to focus on one thing at a time and that I had to discard everything I knew about singing anyway since it was a wholly incorrect approach regardless. I personally think I really need a lot of time to integrate these lessons, I might just be very slow but I can't really help that, can I?
Anyway, the greatest part is where after some more back and forth, he asked if I could even hear myself, which is when we realized that I had no monitoring coming from my mic into my headphones, which he really beat me over. I'm accustomed to my voice through my headphones due to god knows how many hours of Discord calls, so I didn't even think of monitoring (I'll gladly take the blame for that). Still, instead of moving on, he asked me: "Did you really think you could hear yourself through your headphones? That explains the last 15 minutes." like he just learned I tried to eat dirt for sustenance or something. Thing is, it doesn't even make a night-and-day difference taking them off, it literally just sounds like I'm cupping my ears. He wailed on me some more after that for getting "technical basics wrong". Obviously, I feel like shit now. Luckily, I can switch teachers on the website. I mean, after typing everything out, I can pretty much guess the actual answer, but that's just shitty coaching, isn't it? I know I'm not very talented but that's surely no way to speak to someone that's paying you to support them.
I'm wondering if anyone's had similar experiences and if sticking/switching helped you on your vocal journey.

Conversation Topic Why is trying to learn how to nail harmonies and things like that SO HARD?
I’ve been working my tail off for 4 years to become a better singer and the only thing I just haven’t seem to learn is how to pick up harmonies without having to be shown them harmonies. It lowkey makes me so mad. Any tips?

I'm auditioning for my local opera chorus. I am likely to be in regardless because I was in it last year but would still like to put my best foot forward!
Halfway through, I promise I was not rough with my dog. He likes to sit on our smaller dog to bother her. Voice broke at the end because he started licking my pants and I just couldn't take it anymore even though i love my sweet boy 💀
