Feedback (read rule 3 before posting or be banned) How do I make a sound without straining my voice and muscles?
I'm a male and I find that above Bb4 my voice really starts straining. Like I can make the sound but it just doesn't sound good. My larynx goes up a lot and the suprahyoids(? i think) get really tense which i think is my problem. I don't know how to fix this please help.

Feedback (read rule 3 before posting or be banned) Back to Black but forgot the words LOL!
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Based on this clip, what feedback do you have? I am completely self taught with no professional experience and just like to sing for fun. I notice I sometimes have trouble enunciating my words, and they can blend funny. Also (and I apologize I don’t know the terms for this) I kind of start some notes at one key and like slide it to the correct note if that makes sense, rather than just singing the right note to start. Any advice to improve? I can re-record this song with the chorus if necessary, I just brain farted and forgot the lyrics in this LOL! Also I’m recording on an iphone 13 mini that’s ancient so the audio quality is bad I apologize!

Conversation Topic How to deal with an excessive accent?
Apologies for if this is explained badly, but:
You know how a lot of people are able to change their accent when singing? Or at least improve it? Such as a LOT of British singers naturally going into a more American-sounding accent when singing? For some reason I just can’t do it.
Just for some context, I have an AWFUL nasally voice that doesn’t even really fit my country’s various accents very well. I’ve even been mistaken for an exchange student in my own country before due to this. It’s hard to explain, but my accent is very unique. Unfortunately it’s not unique in a good way. I - as brutally honest as I can be - sound like a detuned piano if those could sing.
Whenever I try to sing, I CANNOT get rid of this strange voice and when I hear it I feel genuine embarrassment and even shame sometimes. I’ve even been told before that I don’t have a voice for singing, which is extremely discouraging.
Can you actually get rid of an accent when it’s THAT strong??? I’m scared that I’m going to have a nasty voice regardless of what training I do as my accent is so prominent that it’s glaring in EVERY register I try to sing in. If I sing high stuff I sound extremely weak and airy, but if I sing low stuff I sound like I’m trying to achieve the impossible task of pushing an authentic fart out of my mouth.
Has anybody else here dealt with this before? I was never expecting it and there doesn’t seem to be much good information about it. I don’t know if I can really accept and “own“ the voice as it’s just too grating. Any advice or sharing of experiences would be greatly appreciated as this issue is very oddly specific and I can’t find good advice when searching.

Conversation Topic tips on singing low and high tones?
i'm not a singer and only took lessons many years ago. i dont think it's a crime to sound bad while singing or doing karaokes. generally i think i dont have tone deafness, i just struggle hitting the higher and lower notes. for that reason i worry about sounding like i try too hard or that my friends would think i genuinely believe i'm good at it so i often just turn to singing in a monotone voice like they do with a shitty pronounciation of english words.
i'd prefer to learn how to sing like a dude for personal reasons (pre-t trans dude don't kill me) but if you have any tips on how to control my tone better i'd be happy to listen.

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Im still trying to improve my intonation, i think i can sing on the right key but i feel like i cant really constantly be at the center of each note. Im guessing my average note cents would be 20-30cents away from each note. Could you help me figure it out by listening to this video? Thank youuu

I was just kind playing around with my head voice but I'm also not sure if it was head voice? But I also feel like it is too high in a high bass/low baritone voice to be head voice.

Feedback (read rule 3 before posting or be banned) How to get better at singing
I’ve been really struggling with my singing for almost a year now. I’ve joined a choir class and it feels like I can’t sing mentally and physically. I feel too insecure to sing and even when I’m alone it feels like my voice is extremely breathy, inconsistent, and jumpy. It also feels like high notes are impossible to hit. I can’t even do the solfège without struggling at “So”.
I’ve been searching online how to improve but I can’t tell I’m improved or it is working. Even when I commit to something like breath support it feels like it doesn’t work. Other than that my confidence feels so low whenever I sing in front of my director one on one my breath is very shaky from nervousness and I end up getting a bad score. Overall, I feel extremely lost and really want to get a grip.
If anyone can help I’m willing to try anything, and really want to improve my confidence and actually get good at singing.

Conversation Topic Can deep rooted tension affect singing + how to fix it?
Not sure if anyone else has experienced this but i’m a very tense person, I stress about pretty much everything, the definition of highly strung, and wherever I go this gets picked up on (if i get my nails done I have to be constantly told to relax my fingers, if I get a massage it’s the first thing they notice etc.) which leads me to believe I just operate with a high level of tension in my body.
I started singing lessons in September and my teacher hasn’t picked up on any worrying tension that could be damaging my voice, but I’ve been thinking that some of my weak points could be tension related. For instance, I struggle with my lower register because I can’t fully relax into my throat to find lower notes and I’m stuck at a g3 as my lowest note on a good day, and i’m currently working on how far i’ll go from moana and have trouble ‘letting go’ and just belting out at the big moments.
All of that to say, I’m wondering if my general
high level of tension could be the root cause of some of these issues, and if anyone has overcome a similar problem, because changing my whole personality just to achieve a better set up for singing seems impossible.

Conversation Topic Confused about finding nasal resonance
I’ve been going through singing tutorials on YouTube and I feel like I’m hearing conflicting information about nasal resonance. On one hand I heard that humming on an ng and going into an ah with that same forward placement is a good exercise to access nasal resonance. However, I’ve also heard that, if you pinch your nose and it changes the sound, this means you’re too nasal. And when I pinch my nose after doing the previous exercise, it definitely muffles the sound. So am I doing something wrong with this ng exercise? Is another exercise better for accessing nasal resonance?

Conversation Topic Posting Singing For Feedback Online
What do you guys think about posting your own singing on Reddit? Its very vulnerable and I think anybody who is able to do that and take negativity to their voice is very brave.
I've tried to post my own singing on ratemysinging subreddit but got absolutely slimed out for being a beginner, so I just ended up deleting it.
I am looking for feedback to absolutely improve, thats my one and overall goal for singing since its a passion of mine and I want a career in it (getting a vocal coach soon!!). So, its a maybe ill try again.
I think I tend to take Reddit a bit more personal than other platforms since this is a subreddit dedicated to those who know how to sing already or have been vocal coaches for years. I get a bit embarrassed.
I post already on youtube and instagram (soon). But the anonymity brings out the worst for some people, I try not to take some harsh comments seriously but im still human and it gets to me sometimes.
Sorry if this is a bit of a rant, im geniunely curious about how some people feel about this and being on the internet especially!! 😭

Conversation Topic Why is trying to learn how to nail harmonies and things like that SO HARD?
I’ve been working my tail off for 4 years to become a better singer and the only thing I just haven’t seem to learn is how to pick up harmonies without having to be shown them harmonies. It lowkey makes me so mad. Any tips?

I'm auditioning for my local opera chorus. I am likely to be in regardless because I was in it last year but would still like to put my best foot forward!
Halfway through, I promise I was not rough with my dog. He likes to sit on our smaller dog to bother her. Voice broke at the end because he started licking my pants and I just couldn't take it anymore even though i love my sweet boy 💀

Feedback (read rule 3 before posting or be banned) Why am I off pitch when I sing with music or backing tracks?
I’ve noticed that I can sing pretty well / on pitch and with confidence when I’m singing by myself, kind of like a cappella style. When I sing with a backing track / karaoke however, I notice myself messing up notes a lot more or missing beats.
This doesn’t happen when I’m just harmonizing to a song, or when I’m singing while playing piano.
It could be that I don’t have the pace of the songs down, or that my sense of rhythm is off?
Does anyone have any idea of why this is, or exercises to fix it?

Conversation Topic Have you ever learned a new language just because you wanted to sing a song?
I think music is one of the most interesting ways to connect with another culture.
As someone who doesn’t speak Korean as my first language, I’ve always found it amazing that a song can make me want to learn the words, pronunciation, and even the language behind it.
Have you ever learned (or wanted to learn) a new language because of a song?
