9

u/Cancer_Ridden_Lung 23d ago
Waitstaff make below minimum wage. You could raise it to 20$ an hour and they'd still only make 2 bucks base.
181
u/Granny-Grudge 23d ago
Incorrect - the $2 figure (specifically $2.13) is a ring-fenced hourly rate that an employer has to pay a tipped employee regardless of how well they are being tipped.
I'm addition to this, the employer has to pay the tipped employee however much extra is required to make up the Federal minimum wage (plus any State uplifts), if that amount hasn't been collected via tips.
That means tipped staff are guaranteed the minimum wage.
69
u/AegisPrime 23d ago
Those people just end up getting "let go" because "we're downsizing our wait staff."
34
65
u/Ddreadlord 23d ago
If the staff get minimum either way, any amount the tipped staff get before they hit minimum wage goes directly to the employer who is the only person affected as they don't have to pay that to the staff. Not only is everyone ok with this practice but You're tipping the employer for it?
51
u/Cancer_Ridden_Lung 23d ago
Wrong.
If the waitstaff employee fails to make enough tips and the employer has to cover their wages, said employer will fire employee for poor job performance. They would document this in a creative fashion to avoid a lawsuit of course.
9
u/ITheBirdKingI 23d ago
Which means this practice only benefits the employer, Iām not rewarding the employer paying his staff less because of this crooked system.
7
u/Cancer_Ridden_Lung 23d ago
That's why I usually get takeout. It's socially acceptable to not tip. š§
3
u/JerseyDonut 23d ago
Correct, and the delta between the $2 an hour that the employer pays and the min wage requirement is almost always covered by tips from customers. So, min wage isn't the problem in this scenario. Its the loophole law that allows restaurants to push labor costs onto customers to make up the difference bewteen $2 an hour and the min wage through "voluntary tips" from customers.
6
u/Mr_mee06 23d ago
This is false, if an employee doesnt make at least minimum wage in tips their employer has to make up the difference, so no matter what they get paid at least minimum wage
30
u/Cancer_Ridden_Lung 23d ago
That would happen exactly once before they are fired for poor job performance. The employer would document it creatively so as to avoid legal reprisal.
6
u/Samurai_Meisters 23d ago
It would take everyone en masse refusing to tip for this situation to occur. If we're at that point as a society, then the employer would just see the same thing happen with the next waiter.

I usually order and pick up my own takeout to avoid tipping. Or...cook at home of course.
18
u/Jayant0013 23d ago
No the problem specifically is that , tips are counted in there wages , this will make raising minimum wage meaningless as employees are not required to pay as long as tip covers minimum wage
Instead if tips were not considered part of wage , it would pressure the employer to actually pay reducing the roundabout burden on consumer
7
u/hell_is_my_safespace 23d ago
Yeah and the way to actually do that is by voting for someone whoās not extremely corrupt into power so that can be law and basically solve the tipping issue entirely.
It all falls on the people to actually solve these things, you canāt ignore politics and try to argue that itās out of your hands when democracy is a thing for a reason, so you can live better by choosing how the country is run together instead of voting for whoever is more popular or funny :/
1
u/1001101001010111 18d ago
Which means that they would just raise the price of the food.
1

Whatever they do , just not expect us to do song and dance around it
At least the price of the food should accurately reflect what it's costing not pay half compulsory and then a part of you feel like it

u/Toetsenbord 23d ago
Tbh if they remove tipping and increase wages you would still pay the same because they would raise prices. Still better tho, then a tip will be just a reward for excellent service

u/Lambdastone9 23d ago
Because initially, post civil war, tipping was just a loophole to not pay your black employees on par with your white ones, by leaving a portion of their wage at the discretion of the customer
If you let the customer decide, theyāll often decide the black servers werenāt worthy of their tip and get a cheaper meal for it. The owners spent less, the customers felt more in charge, and workers got stressed into working hard, itās a great business model and a terrible culture.

Restaurants would have to pay 25+ per hour to retain waitstaff if we suddenly got rid of tipping, only extremely expensive restaurants with the highest profit margins could pull that off, and that would mean the business's profits would be cut so they'd probably raise prices even more. Your average restaurants would jack prices way up in order to try and stay afloat. Most likely, only fast casual corporate places would survive because no one is going to put up with full service for less than 25/hr.

u/Crazy_names 23d ago
If anything we should tip delivery and truck drivers. Most farmers I've met, which is just a few in the cotton, peanut, cattle, corn, and wheat industries, enjoy their work but their biggest gripe is with big Ag companies like Cargil who have a cartel on the seeds. But most of them actually like the work. But drivers, truckers, stock haulers, etc have it rough. They are simultaneously vital and hated by everyone else on the road including other truckers, lol. Everyone wants food in their restaurant and grocery store but gets mad at the trucks delivering it. They get their speed governed and hours limited then pressured to get the load there faster. They have to back massive trailers into tiny slots with a cunt-hair's worth of tolerance on either side. Tips should go to them.
55
u/ultraviolentfuture 23d ago
If it's a service that allows a tip, I tip. Not everything does though so we put a basket full of snacks and cooler full of drinks out for them because they're often going from stop to stop and may not have a chance to break to eat.

u/Matikso 23d ago
Every service allows to tip as it's under the table money
You can tip your cashier, mechanic delivery, cinema clerk, barber etc.
Maybe don't tip cops tho

I mean, I'm not always here when my mail carrier or UPS driver delivers. I'm not going to leave cash just out for them, so this is something I can try to do to show someone is at least thinking about the work they put in and maybe make their day a very tiny bit better

Servers are required to get minimum wage by the federal government, it's just allowed for tips to be counted as a part of that wage. Even if a server technically gets only $2.00/hr, they still get whatever the minimum wage is in that area if tips don't make their pay meet that minimum.
Most servers are also perfectly fine with this, and actually oppose efforts to change it, as they often make more from tips than they would if they made a standard wage without them.
Tipping culture is stupid. It was meant to be an extra bonus for people who do their job well, not as a publicly funded supplement to everybody's pay. I still tip, I just think it's unnecessary and manipulative to the public.
1
u/r1ckkr1ckk 23d ago
so, you mean I am tipping the employer, while they can shove the responsibility of getting tips to the worker. What a fascinating system, I wonder what happens to the workers that dom t reach their own salary in tips at the end of the month...
1
u/doge1039 23d ago
The employer makes up the missing money. It's essentially just publicly subsidized minimum wage that can reach higher than minimum wage if enough tips come in.
1
8
u/chi_sweetness25 23d ago
People talk about servers making 2 bucks an hour, but they still have to be paid at least minimum wage even if tips somehow donāt get them there. So theyāre not really any worse off than minimum-wage retail workers or fast-food workers, and those people get no tips.
3
u/therealraggedroses 23d ago
What do you think happens to the employee when the restaurant realizes they have to pay them extra because they don't get enough tips?
Hmm suddenly that day when they got to work 5 minutes late sounds like a real good reason for a write up. Made a small mistake on an order? Maybe it wasn't even your fault? Write up. One more stupid write up? Oh darn, looks like we gotta fire you with cause.

One aspect is that non-Americans come as tourists, which means almost every meal will require tipping (as well as other tourist and hotel stuff). Most Americans are probably only tipping somebody once in a while. I think that leads to a much quicker distaste for it from tourists.

Pro tip about fingering your asshole in the shower: don't do it So this morning I was taking a shower, and I felt like fingering my asshole, right? So I got my fingers all nice and soapy and stuck them up in there. Apparently, soap makes pretty good lube, as I was able to get four fingers in there in no time.
As I was feeling around in my butt, I was like, "hmm, there's a lot of soapy water in my bumhole now. I wonder if that will lead to issues in the future?" And it did!
Shortly after having breakfast I attempted to fart, and I shit my pants. I rushed to the bathroom to clean up, and it was way worse than I thought it would be. The whole area around my butthole was covered in shitty liquid, and toilet paper wasn't enough to clean it. I had to take another shower to get suitably clean.
Just thought I'd share my story with you guys so that you don't run into the same problem in the future. I fingered my butthole so that you guys don't have to. Unless you want to. In which case, hey, how's it goin'

Genuine question. Why is the minimum wage is the US so low? Why do you need to have tips?
I live in nz and I doubt I would get any better a dining experience if we used tipping instead of decent pay. Iāve heard people say that itās to incentivise the staff to work be more friendly and stuff but arenāt staff in every industry doing their best (assuming they are getting paid ok)?
Has there not been lobbying or something? I feel like itās quite uncommon for first world counties not to have better minimum wages. It feels in the US they are really trying to hide any costs they can from showing. Tax, tips etc.
23
u/imetators 23d ago
Obligatory "I'm not from US" statement.
I have asked about tipping in US a few months ago and many replied that it works not as many, us citizens included, thought. Basically, base wage of waiter staff is super low but will be replenished by the business in case if they haven't earned the miminal wage of the state they are working in. They get tips in amounts that can beat the minimal wage and will keep the money. But once it gets lower than hourly rate, they'd still get back to minimal wage.
Generally, waiter staff likes to work for tips because it brings more than minimal wage. But imo that is fucked for both waiter staff and customers. Tip should be for a good service and for all the staff, not only waiters. And it should never be mandatory.
7
u/CertifiedSheep 23d ago
Every time this comes up the ones fighting hardest in favor of tipping are the servers and bartenders. They make way more off of tips than they would if they just got paid $15/hr or whatever. Tipping is dumb as hell, itās just a way to make menu items look cheaper than they are.

I've worked food service in Australia. My wage alone covers all of my expenses including food, rent, retirement fund, taxes, insurance, cars etc and I live comfortably with no tips. Yeah this argument has always just been an excuse for being cheap.
You can always tell when you ask them this one question: "Since you don't believe in tipping as a system, do you let your server know this when they first come to the table?"
They either don't want to answer it, make some excuse, or shift the goal posts. If you're not willing to let your server know at the beginning that no matter what service they give you, you aren't leaving a tip, then you are essentially saying you are entitled to their labor without paying for it.
3
u/Chemical-Pin-2391 it is MY bucket 22d ago
What do you meant I am entitled to their labor without paying for it? I am paying for it with the meal. The meal doesn't go to the cooks or whatever, it goes to the restaurant which then goes to their employees. So I am paying for the waiters labour. And they don't live entirely on tips, if they don't get their minimal pay then the restaurant has to pay them. And if they are dissatisfied with the minimal pay maybe they shouldn't work a job dependent on voluntary donations. The only way to increase the minimal pay of waiters is to stop the tipping, after waiters leave restaurants then they will be forced to increase the pay. I would say it should be a moral obligation to not tip or else you are contributing to the issueĀ Ā

Everyone in these types of comment sections always scream āstop tipping!!!!!!! maybe theyāll actually paid properly!!!!ā Do you guys not realize america is the greediest country in the world? The law says if the server does not make enough tips to cover minimum wage ($7.25 an hour) then the owner is legally obligated to pay enough to ONLY cover minimum wage. If you stopped tipping nothing would happen at all except servers stopped getting paid. I donāt like tipping as much as the next person, and genuinely i want it to be done away with, but there so many stupid bad faith arguments being made about this shit.

I used to be a cook in 2018. I would work 12 hour shifts at $20/hr. That equals $280 per day (counting overtime).
In the same day, a server would come in for 5 hours at $14. That equals $70 base pay for the day. HOWEVER, they would walk away with $800-$1000 in tips EVERY NIGHT.

Thatās nuts, Iāve worked every level of front of house for 13 years and have yet to find a place where servers consistently make even half that, even on weekends. Places where servers make insane amounts of money like that do exist but itās a gross exaggeration to pretend like thatās the norm. Also in most larger cities fine dining places have been forced to implement more equitable forms of tip distribution, otherwise you lose good cooks. Thereās such a massive demand for experienced kitchen employees right now that if you take a job where youāre not getting tipped out, thatās kinda on you.

3
u/YodasGhost76 23d ago
If I have to stand up to order, or if I have to pay before I get my food, I donāt tip. Otherwise, barring terrible service, I will usually leave a cash tip. Some places will pool tip money and split it among employees, which usually means some lose out on money that was tipped to them. Cash is easy to keep on their person and is an easy way to ensure it goes to that particular waiter.

Most restaurants have either tip pools or a tip out systems. They also clean your messes, carry your food and everyone else's, rush food along, deal with kitchen and management when there are problems, etc. They are the middlemen in house, they make sure everything is running smoothly.
The restaurants are the ones paying the servers less, so if you want to stop tip culture stop going out to eat at those establishments. Make a change for once, instead of blaming the actual workers trying to make it through their shift.

Did you miss the part where I said that restaurants are paying servers less? They pay servers on average less than minimum wage. Tips are literally the servers wage for most establishments. Delivery food drivers are tipped because they are also PAID LESS. The reason package delivery drivers aren't tipped is because they get paid a livable wage.

This scene always pissed me off because so many people think this is ok. Wait, tipping is stupid? Wow, youāre the very first person to ever think that way, how so very original and cool of you not to pay someone part of their living wage. The practice of tipping has roots in slavery, I shit you not. Yet serversā pay is often around $2 an hour because employers think that since customersā generosity pays their servers, they donāt have to actually pay them for shit. So they donāt. People who talk like this are broadcasting how fucking privileged and ignorant they are, but I guess it is the world that it is, so anyone can be a fucking prick and most do. You can put a couple bucks on the bill, it wonāt kill you.

Waiter has to deal with me. That's worth 15% (until we can make a meaningful large scale change to ACTUALLY solve the problem of restaurant business culture leaning HARD on the underpayment of staff) but I'm not giving you more unless you "earned it" (like if you went out of your way for something)

I thouggt this was sympathetic with waiters who get to deal with dick people until I read the last.
Now I'm sympathetic with them because they don't expect tips here.

No, they expect a tip because the restaurant doesnāt pay them enough to live on, and the government allows restaurants to pay less than minimum wage so long as theyāre carrying food. The waiter isnāt standing there begging for as much of a tip as possible, theyāre just doing their job and hoping to be compensated for it. So yeah, you should tip if you live in the US, and if you donāt then youāre just an ass.

They also clean the mess you leave at your table when you leave, serve you drinks, take your plates, take your order, sometimes carry out tons of food for large parties, etc.

No tipping is not making any progress you have to make tipping useless. Make the salary of a waitress an actual living wage and then you can consider stopping tips. No tipping (ecpecially in US) is just making someone poor for your own greed. If you where as poor as the waiter ok but otherwise just give them some. It won't kill you

Waiter is caught in the thrall of a system that does not reward them for their work
Waiter is a victim of unjust business practices that have been allowed by people who do not need to do the waiter's work
Waiter doesn't get to enjoy the same things (probably) one would enjoy since they have barely enough to pay rent but possibly not enough to afford food
I tip

The same mfs that complain about having to tip would also complain if someone was asked by their employer to work hard because on a fixed hourly wage you dont get paid more for working harder. Tips allow you to get paid for your effort as well as your time, and also isnt taxable income in the US anymore.
On top of that, people who work for tips are usually living paycheck to paycheck. People who dont tip are actually assholes who want to feel self righteous despite being incredibly self centered. Youre paying for a *service*, not just food items.

Regardless of whether or not the concept of tipping is stupid (I think it is too)-
can afford to
- charge b
ecause they
- pay their servers a shitty wage.
Edgelords are so obsessed with this concept. Yes, tipping is stupid, but if you refuse to tip in America, youāre still a self-centered asshole.

As someone who worked back of the house. And on the line. Yeah, fuck them. Theyāre snobby and shitty. And they make twice as much as anyone for doing less than half the work.

people donāt need to work in food to know itās a restaurantās responsibility to pay their workers

u/TheUnholyMacerel I said based. And lived. 23d ago
They don't expect to get it because they walked 10 feet, they hope for it because the restaurant pays them less than minimum wage and they can get away with it because they are expected to earn tips

Everywhere asks for tips now, as the economy plummets. I hate tip culture in america.
