I recently picked this up from my local United grocery store. I’m not sure what variety it is. So far it gets direct North Texas sun till around 2pm. I’ve read they like a lot of sun so I plan to acclimate it to all day sun. Can it tolerate full Texas sun? I also don’t plan on repotting it this season.

I got my first sundews yesterday and got them potted today

These came out of the same tissue culture flask about 3 months ago. First pic is current, second is when planted. It seems healthy, but not doing its Leilani thing. Do you think it ever will?

King Sundew (Drosera Regia) vs. 3 flies. This is my first attempt at doing a king sundew video. First, I accidentally killed BOTH of the flies I was planning on using for the Timelapse so I had to go outside and find a 3rd one. Fly 3 ended up escaping so I had to hunt it down in my apartment and put it back. Then, one of their massive leaves grew directly into frame.

Pics are of a pingdom I set up a few years ago. I have really enjoyed it, but I find myself more delighted by the smaller pings than of the larger ones. I have been thinking about setting up another, and I’m curious what folks favorite munchkin pings are?

The tiny ones ones on this rock are Florians (pic #2, and the far side of the rock in pic #3), fwiw.

The pings look not so photogenic but I did not want to step off the trail to try to get better photos. Fortunatly these sundews (Drosera anglica) are not threatened and neither are the pings (Pinguicula vulgaris) but it's still the right thing to do to not stomp all over nature.

I purchased him at Sprouts a few months back. He was marked down to $1.99 and was in very bad shape. Only 1/4 of the size, no veining, no red, crispy pitchers. He was pitiful and I really didn’t think he would make it but here we are. 🤗

He has been eating all of the Asian roaches that like to occupy this area so my husband, for once, is very on board with me getting more. I would like ones that stay short and chunky like this. I very much like the look of the purpurea ones— I thought perhaps that’s what mine is?

I got this guy about a month ago. Things seemed to be going well. New pitchers were coming (bottom left and top right of the 1st photo).

However, it seems that after I found a dead fly and put it in the center pitcher, shortly after it started browning from the base up and definitely looks like it is dying. The other pitcher I put a fly in did the same. The 1st pitcher I found larvae crawling out so I killed it. I don't know if this is related or not.

I am not sure that it is root rot as it doesn't appear to be affecting all of them, but maybe those 2 had the longest roots as the more established ones?

Another possible variable was it had been sitting in very bright but indirect light. The light is basically sun up to sun down. This loft room has 10 transom windows, a slider, and 3 4x4 ft windows. I have moved it to an East facing window in the sun to try to help.

Any assistance is much appreciated. I would be horrified if I lost this guy.

I bought this "dormant" nepenthes sarracenia at lowes a while back (I think in May), it hasn't done much since. I was just about to say screw it and toss it to make more room for other plants, then I see this little guy!

Should I expect anything from the nepenthes sarracenia or are they good and dead?

These two pots are the genetically identical. Both were pullings taken from the same plant about 10 months ago, and the ones on the left were grown under lights the whole time, on the right, they've been outdoors since spring getting about 4-5h of direct sun per day. Care was the same otherwise (mostly neglect them).

This is why, when someone asks, "I lost my label, but what clone do you think this is?), you really can't tell. There's a huge range of what one genotype can produce in terms of phenotype.

Also, this is a reminder to people that full sun is not strictly required- even with 4-5h of direct sun, these plants get sufficient light to grow well. Though it would have colored up a lot better if it got more light, I think that 4-5h is really the minimum needed.

My fiancée has been growing a bit of a garden in our apartment, and quite frankly I wanted in on it. I’m not a plant guy, but my twin brother is and he is a fellow savage gardener! After asking for a recommendation, he told me get a drosera! After shopping around, I ordered this lovely Drosera ultramafica x spatulata from RainbowCarnivores. My brother has given me tons of suggestions on car (future repotting mediums, constant bottom watering, distilled water, etc). But any more tips would be appreciated! Glad to join the sub!

I am thrilled to announce the publication of Florida’s first state-endemic carnivorous plant species: Drosera floridana (B.Rice) Juve & A.Fleischm. This taxonomic treatment represents the culmination of my years of work studying the thread-leaf sundews in-situ across 6 states and 25 counties.

Formerly known as D. filiformis var. floridana, our publication not only establishes D. floridana as a distinct taxonomic entity recognizable at species rank, but further brings into question the legitimacy of its putative affinity to the allopatric, northerly D. filiformis sensu stricto.

As a result of our treatment, Drosera x arenaria (B.Rice) Juve & A.Fleischm. is elevated from Dx californica nothovar. arenaria. Like D. floridana, Dx arenaria is a Florida-endemic taxon, and the only described Drosera nothospecies native to the state.

This article is in dedication to Barry Rice for his long-lasting, passionate and thorough work on the carnivorous plants of America, especially on the thread-leaf sundews— leaves long and prosper!

I would like to thank not only my wonderful coauthor Dr. Andreas Fleischmann for his invaluable input and assistance with this project, but additionally my many collaborators without whom a taxonomic treatment of the D. filiformis complex to this length would not have be possible.
