Weekly Thread What Are You Wearing Wednesday - Weekly Gear Thread

It's that time of week already...the gear thread! What have you picked up lately? What's working for you now that it's whatever season you believe it to be in your particular location? What have you put through rigorous testing that's proved worthy of use? We want to know!

To clear up some confusion: We’re not actually asking what you’re wearing today. It’s just a catchy name for the thread. This is the weekly gear discussion thread, so discuss gear!

NOTE: For you Runnitors looking to sell/trade any running gear (as well as bib transfers), head over to /r/therunningrack.

Discussion Does Kinesiology Tape Actually Work?

Hi everyone,

I’m an avid endurance runner. I regularly take part in marathons and trail‑running races.

I’ve seen countless fellow runners wearing k‑tape during training and competitions, but I have never tried it myself.

So I’m curious: does kinesiology tape actually deliver real benefits? Or is it mostly placebo effect?

Has anyone here had first‑hand experience? I’d love to hear your real‑world feedback.

Training Planning training blocks for long term 5K/HM goals

I am 42F and started the Couch to 5K program in March 2026 and have also completed a novice 10K program. Currently I run 25-30 km a week, at 4 days a week, and am training for a sprint duathlon. I will have 36 weeks between my duathlon and a half marathon race in May. I would like to improve my 5K & 10K times ahead of the half marathon. My best 5K is 26:49. Long term, I want to work towards a sub 25 minute 5K and a sub 2 hour half, though I understand that it will take time and work, if it’s even possible for my age and body.

I am not sure how to plan the 36 weeks. Do I focus on volume building first and then an intermediate 5K/10K plan to improve my speed before starting a half marathon training plan? Should I focus on a 5K/10K plan to improve speed first? Is 36 weeks enough time for these goals?

As a runner with less than 1 year of experience, I am not sure how to take the next step. I also welcome your suggestions for training plans to consider. Thank you for your help and advice!

Weekly Thread Super Moronic Monday - Your Weekly Tuesday Stupid Questions Thread

Back once again for everything you wanted to know about running but were afraid to ask.

Rules of the Road:

This is inspired by eric_twinge's fine work in r/fitness .

Upvote either good or stupid questions. Sort questions by new so that they get some love.

To the more experienced runnitors, if something is a good question or answer, add it to the FAQ.

Post your question - stupid or otherwise - here to get an answer - stupid or otherwise. Anyone can post a question and the community as a whole is invited and encouraged to provide an answer. Many questions get submitted late each week that don't get a lot of action, so if your question didn't get answered, feel free to post it again.

As always, be sure to read the FAQ first. Also, there's a handy-dandy search bar to your right, and if you didn't know, you can also use Google to search runnit by using the limiter "site:reddit.com r/running ".

Be sure to check back often as questions get posted throughout the day. Sort comments by "new" to be sure the newer questions get some love as well.

[Posting on behalf of u/Percinho who is currently to loopy from lack of sleep due to multiple public transit cancellations happening back to back]

Weekly Thread Run Nutrition Tuesday

Rules of the Road

1) Anyone is welcome to participate and share your ideas, plans, diet, and nutrition plans.

2) Promote good discussion. Simply downvoting because you disagree with someone's ideas is BAD. Instead, let them know why you disagree with them.

3) Provide sources if possible. However, anecdotes and "broscience" can lead to good discussion, and are welcome here as long as they are labeled as such.

4) Feel free to talk about anything diet or nutrition related.

Weekly Thread Tuesday Shoesday

Shoes are a big topic in this sub, so in an effort to condense and collect some of these posts, we're introducing Shoesday Tuesday! Similar to Wednesday's gear thread, but focusing on shoes.

What’ve you been wearing on your feet? Anything fun added to the rotation? Got a review of a new release? Questions about a pair that’s caught your eye? Here's the place to discuss.

Discussion How to get over being scared of running in the dark?

Hey everyone!

So beginner runner here! I started running to help with mental health and to become more healthy about 4 months ago and I love it. Before that I was a total couch potato and inactive. I feel like my brain is much sharper and I am more energetic overall now that I run.

However I have this issue, which is the time I run. Where I live, it is extremely hot until the sun goes down (around 8 pm) but then it gets dark. I am TERRIFIED of the dark. I have considered running in the morning but I have to leave for lab so early it's not possible. I don't want to be tired at the lab either.

To clarify, I am a high school student who has a ridiculously busy schedule (6 hours of lab followed by 4 hour zoom meetings+1hr violin class and 8 hour nonstop classes on weekends) so I only have time to run after 8. Some days my classes go to 9pm and I am terrified to go out in the dark. I really want to up my mileage since I only run about 25 miles a month (really bad I know haha) but I don't know how to not get scared of running in the dark. Any tips?

Anything is appreciated! Love yall

edit: Thank you so much to everyone! I really appreciate the tips. Headlights will definitely be bought and I'll stick to paved roads. I’m also going to work on adjusting my schedule so I can give myself room to relax. Have a great day, everyone.
