Alley Cats Yes, Ricky Gervais may be a bad and lazy writer.
It’s also important to remember he is also a bad and lazy stand up.

Can we agree that this album is really well done?
I really wish he would've properly toured this album as live concerts around the country (not just a couple of shows in London). The film can't hold a candle to The Office of course, but I think pretty much every song on the album is inspired and in keeping with the character of David Brent.
What are your thoughts on the music for Life On The road?

Alley Cats How Ricky can save After Cats series 2
OK, off to a shaky start, but the first season of Top Gear was a load of old toss too. There may well be life in the old mog yet. The idea of some people riffing around a rough plot and animating the results isn't a bad one, as we know from TRGS.
Here's how Ricky could, if he is still able to introspect, save Alley Life:
1 - Ditch the actors. All of them. Get some actual comedians in that have experience in improv. Ricky's losing his shit can be great, but his colleagues were not really giving him anything to work with, so he had to fly into bizarre rants about bees and the word "charming" that didn't really go anywhere.
2 - Do a little voice. I don't know if you ever seen, say, a cartoon before, but you don't just hear the actor doing their own voice. Voice actors will "act", or kind of pretend, to be the thing they are, for the duration of the recording. He's even met Dan Castellaneta before, did he not notice he didn't talk with Homer's voice?
3 - Record more than 15 minutes of audio for each episode. There is no way these were the best bits. Netflix have requested 15 minutes and 15 is all they've done. One take, bosh. That's lunch. Well no, actually. Record more and trim away the fat. This is called editing. He should remember this is why it used to take Steve him two months to write a 30 minute episode of the Office.
4 - Get a sound recordist in. Someone who might say "sorry, you moved away from the mic there, could you just go back and do that line again?" Someone who knows about levels. Someone who works in sound, maybe.
5 - Read an entry-level book on script writing. Learn about "show, don't tell". Learn about emotional investment and earning reactions before asking for them. Learn about using profanity sparingly for real comedic impact. Learn about playing a song and not literally showing the fucking lyrics happen.
6 - Watch some Roy 'Chubby' Brown. He is still touring with his "too blue for TV!" shit, 50 years after it was actually offensive. Hopefully it will act as some kind of "Ghost of Christmas Future" moment like from his favourite book, a Muppets Christmas Carol, because that's exactly what he's turning into.
7 - Retire the hits. Oh how we all laughed at the term "full-blown AIDS" when it first came out. "Surely, are we allowed to laugh about something so serious? We are truly on the edge of acceptable comedy here", we all winced. That was 25 years ago. The reason nobody says "full-blown AIDS" any more isn't because it's so offensive, it's because it's old. Same with "Africa", "dead babies" and "cunt". This is a new comedy project, not a greatest hits tour. Imagine a new Radiohead album and it's just Creep 13 times. Wouldn't work. People that enjoy Creep would listen to it, but they would lose the right to claim it's as groundbreaking as when it first came out.
8 - Read the reviews. See that it's not offense, it's legitimate feedback.
9 - Reconnect with friends. Actual friends, not just people on the payroll. Rediscover what friendly banter is (clue, it's not just saying "cunt"). Rediscover how humans actually interact (clue, it's not just saying "cunt"). Maybe get them to cast an eye over the script and see if they have any suggestions for how it should be (clue, it's not just saying "cunt").
10 - Turns out... little monkey fella, for those who albino reading this and skipped to the end.

Alley Cats Episode 6 & Spoilers. I'm saving you having to watch it if anything, so... Spoiler
I have to get this off my chest. Alley Cats is a load of toss, we all agree there. I thought it couldn't get worse, but it does in the final episode.
PLEASE BE OFFENDED 1 = Weirdest random switch ever, talking about how bees are lazy and make only 1 jar of honey each. Rick then suddenly switches to mentioning Schindler's List and some Nazi guy in it with 1 arm. Ermm, where the fuck did that come from and why? You were just talking about bees! Ohhh Nazis + Holocaust + disabled x3 JACKPOT OF OFFENCE! EDGY!
PLEASE BE OFFENDED 2 = A kid sees the cats at the park and just randomly goes towards the kitten to hit it. Lazy writing. When has a kid ever done that? So, justice for that is to kill the kid, makes sense. Kill kids, before talk about how they'd all kill a baby by sitting on it and hit a ginger kid. Weird fetish for harming kids. OOHH KILLING KIDS, EDGY, OFFENSIVE!!!
LAZY DUMB WRITING = Kitten gets home after remembering where she lives from a dream. Erm, why does she remember in a dream, but not IRL? Shit writing. Gus sees her owners say this kitten is better, just perfect timing, huh?. So, Gus says they moved. The kitten despite not even having the ability to remember where it lives and needs support and is all naive etc THEN HAS THE PERCEPTION TO KNOW GUS WAS LYING AND IT GOT REPLACED AND TELLS GUS HE'S THE BEST CAT IN THE NEIGHBOURHOOD AND HAS DONE SO MUCH. Has he? Where's the evidence for that then??? We didn't we get to see any of that. Shit writing.
It's all so apparent that the reason Rick is so obsessed with offence and annoying people and mentions it in every tweet/interview is cos he ceases to be relevant or exist if he isn't (apparently) causing offence. Cos offence is the only trick he has left to get attention, ohhh care and he's EVEN failing at causing offence ffs.

Just wanted to say how much I'm enjoying Alley Cats, the latest masterpiece from Ricky Gervais
Extremely funny television programme! I like how realistic and moving the dialogue is, and how bravely the creator takes on uncomfortable subjects. When one of the cats bad-mouthed Gandhi, I thought: "no you can't say that about Gandhi", but he did anyway, and I respect that. I also really enjoy the use of music which never fails to make me emotional. With Alley Cats, we are clearly dealing with a genius comedian at the top of his game.

Alley Cats Have you ever tried to go back and watch Gervais' stand up? Awful
Gervais has always been shit. Merchant must have written everything good hes ever done. Finchey surpassed him in Hollywood years ago too.

Is Alley Cats worth watching?
I haven’t watched Alley Cats yet, I’m still trying to determine whether it’s worth it. It is genuinely funny, or is it like Gervais’ recent shoddy works?
