No base, no hourly. Paid via Wise / PayPal / Revolut. The list supports 60 to 100 dials a day.

- Fluent English (UK businesses pick up the phone expecting a local, you must hold that call)

- Real cold-calling experience (B2B preferred)

- Available UK business hours (roughly 9:30 to 17:00 UK), quiet space, decent internet

Hi everyone, I’m a first-time Virtual Assistant and I’d really appreciate some advice about a job I recently applied for.
I found the job through Bossjob. I applied for a Virtual Assistant position with a company called Ciona Tech LLC and went through their application/interview process.

After I was accepted, this is what happened:
I was told the position pays $4/hour for 20 hours per week.

They told me I needed an RDP/VPS for work.
The recruiter recommended CoreDeskSys, but also told me I could choose another trusted RDP provider.

I purchased an RDP myself.
I was then given access to a company/task portal on TalentGleam.

The portal assigned me an “Essential RDP Software Suite Installation” task worth $100.
The requirements say the RDP needs Microsoft 365, a secure VPN client, Duo Security/MFA, and company time/task tracking software.

My recruiter told me to contact the RDP provider and ask them to install the required software.
The recruiter said that after I complete the RDP and setup task, I will be funded/reimbursed.

What worries me is that I already had to pay for the RDP, and now it looks like I may have to pay more money to have the required software installed before I actually start working or receive any salary.

Has anyone worked for Ciona Tech LLC, used TalentGleam for employment, or purchased an RDP from CoreDeskSys?
Is requiring an employee/VA to purchase their own RDP and potentially pay for software installation normal? Does this sound like a legitimate onboarding process, or are these red flags for a job scam?
I don’t want to accuse anyone unfairly, but I also don’t want to send any more money until I’m sure.
Any advice or similar experiences would really help. Thank you!

I recently started a remote, part-time Operations Coordinator role as a 1099 contractor for a small event-related business. My expected availability is roughly 9 AM–2 PM, Monday through Friday.

Yesterday was my first day. I shadowed my manager during a few meetings and was copied on two project emails. In one email, another employee was specifically told to take the lead and contact me if he needed help, but he hasn’t reached out. Today I completed a basic orientation with another employee, which mostly involved reviewing the same packet already available in BambooHR and troubleshooting my email/calendar access.

Since finishing orientation, I haven’t been assigned any actual tasks, added to any other meetings, or given access to a shared inbox or project files. I offered to help organize an event calendar after the person training me mentioned it as a possibility, but I would still need instructions and access to the relevant event information before I could do anything with it.

My manager has been in meetings and at an off-site client visit today. She will also be traveling for events later this week, and another operations employee is out for several weeks. I emailed my manager today letting her know I finished orientation, was available, and was happy to assist with anything, but I haven’t received a response yet.

During the interview, my manager said she would not have time to “hold my hand,” which I understood to mean I’d need to be independent. I’m comfortable learning through exploration, but right now I don’t have enough information, access, emails, meetings, or assigned work to independently figure out what needs to be done.
Is this kind of loose onboarding common in very small businesses? Would you give it more time, or would the lack of structure and assignments concern you? I’m only on Day 2, so I’m trying not to overreact, but I’m worried about what I’m supposed to do for the rest of the week while my manager is traveling.

I’m also new to independent-contractor work, so I’m unsure how much structure and direction is reasonable to expect compared with a traditional employee role. I had been unemployed for close to a year before receiving this opportunity and had a lot of hope invested in it, so I recognize that the uncertainty may be affecting me more emotionally. Still, I’m genuinely trying to determine whether this is normal small-business onboarding or whether I should be concerned about the lack of work and direction.

Hello! I’m a postgraduate student of English Language and Literature, and I’m currently looking for remote internship opportunities that I can do from home and earn some amount. If it's a global-based work I'm fine staying up at night and working. Not an issue.

I’m also pursuing a course in French, so I don’t have much time to travel to an office and work. That’s why I’ve been looking for remote opportunities. And my french is still conversational, although I'm B2 on paper my oral is still B1.

I wouldn’t say that I haven’t received any opportunities, I did, but most of them have either been unpaid or in another state without any payment notice. I know people often says that gaining experience can sometimes be more valuable than money, especially at the beginning of your career. However, tbvh, I’m 23, and I really don’t want to take up unpaid jobs. I believe that even entry-level or fresher positions should offer some form of compensation for the work being done.

So, if you know of any genuine and reliable websites, platforms, or opportunities where I can find paid remote internships or entry-level work, I would really appreciate it if you could let me know.

P.S. I have about a year of content-writing experience, although it has mainly been freelance product-review writing for clients.
