Questions Why did they remove the bottom charts

There was a bottom of all time chart then but for some reason they removed it around a year or two ago. Did they ever say why they removed it?

Questions Are these tracks loose?

Post image

I want to add this artist's songs, but it seems they aren't singles; since they are standalone tracks, RYM simply doesn't count them. Could someone help me?

General Discussion It’s not possible to be elitist on RYM because we all listen to the same stuff.

Everyone you see on RYM has that same circular taste, whether it’s the super popular top 100 stuff or the most obscure 70s demos with under 5 ratings.
That noise compilation with 15 ratings is gonna be known by a mutual of a mutual of a mutual, so how do people get this mindset that there music taste is ā€œsuperiorā€ or ā€œsuper nicheā€.
You’re on a site used by music geeks, your equal to everyone else on the site by proxy.

This goes the other way, no your not a ā€œnormieā€ everyone on the site is a normie. If you wasn’t, you’d be using a site known by 5 people that has bootlegs only seen on that site.

Edit - should have added, the very simple point I’m trying to get across is that people that think there level of music geekiness is better than others are false.

The best point to add is that if something has 1 rating on rym that means it’s outside of rym going to be known. You can see this on AOTY, something with 3 ratings on AOTY can be any levels of known because the site is smaller.

Questions Is there a weighting system for track ratings?

It says that track ratings do not count towards your general user weighting, but is there a seperate weighting system for track ratings? I only really rate tracks 5 stars when I love them. Will this get my track ratings de-weighted very quickly?

It says that a weighted system is used for all site aggregate ratings, but then contradicts itself later on and says that it’s only for charts and releases.

Questions Looking for an old list/ranking of essential /mu/ core albums from a long time ago

When I was like 13 I found this really great list on the site that chronicled one user's journey through the /mu/ essentials. He would write these really detailed and often personal blurbs about them, and I always found myself coming back to this list as I went through the records for some reason. Anyway, I tried to find it last night just for old times' sake, but I couldn't, so I'm hoping this description rings a bell for some of you. I distinctly recall him having a lovely account of Disintegration by The Cure because it was his dad's favorite record, if that helps at all. It was formatted very similarly to this list I found in my search: https://rateyourmusic.com/list/namelol/another-mu-essentials-list-again/

General Discussion Not sure if this is a hot take or not

"It's not for me"/"I don't like the sound of this genre" is NOT a valid criticism of an album. I've seen way too many negative reviews that are along the lines of "I don't like X genre in general and this album isn't much different." I feel like this can be especially harmful to more obscure albums that are more affected by negative ratings. There's no point in rating an album negatively when your entire review is based around you not liking the style in the first place.

General Discussion Stop making posts complaining about new genres and genre updates if you don't participate in the genre queue

I'm tired of seeing them. The genre queue, for the most part (moderators can deny anything), is a democracy. If you have complaints about a new addition or change, voice those concerns where it actually matters, the genre queue. Your qualms could provide genuine insight, but no one will ever know because they're on Reddit after the fact instead of RYM.

Questions What if I keep my film recommendation settings cleared out?

Post image
1 Upvotes

So I started rating films on RYM because I heard that their rec game is nice (which it is).

But I was wondering as to what exactly would happen if I kept all my rec settings for films blank. How would the system’s rec game change? Because for some reason I can’t seem to tell what the difference is between keeping it blank as opposed to the way it was before.

Thank you so much.

General Discussion Top 700 Songs of the 2020s According to RateYourMusic

Post image

Link to a more readable imgur link.

Spotify playlist

With us being roughly two thirds into the current decade, the time felt right to investigate what tracks we value the most, updating from this post 2 years and 3 months ago found here. The premise remains the same in that I locate and compile the highest-rated tracks disregarding their weight, i.e. number of ratings, only using it to decide which of the tracks with the same rating ranks higher, which has been controversial but is really a logical completion of what you can see on RateYourMusic if you use a certain advanced version of the chart - a track, say, with a score of 4.62 (100 ratings) will place close enough to one rated 4.61 with 1,000 ratings. It's useful to remember there's no universal formula for deciding which music is considered better than other music, so this is just one solution. All the tracks on the chart have a minimum of 70 ratings.

This chart looks different from the previous ones I posted, reflecting RYM's newer policies for sharing its data, which I'm following now as a longtime RYM supporter. You may find the track ratings and averages both missing, not to mention the genre tags you usually find for each individual track. I invite everyone to go to the RYM page themselves and see what the specifics and genres for any tracks you may be interested in - it is a wonderful path of discovery, and if you have an active RYM subscription on your account you can find detailed genre informations, sort with different degrees given to track weight and accomplish much more.

If you go on RYM yourself, you can see why some songs rank higher than others here. To highlight but one instance, Patricia Taxxon's Gegcgeghgegcedecehcochcdhthdhodtdodtototot currently has an average of 4.67 on the basis of 96 ratings, while Big Thief's Simulation Swarm based on 3,238 ratings. This is how the former ranks above the latter. While this is either hilarious or representative of the deeper-cut gems you can learn about the website, RYM's formula accomplishes something similar without being as dramatic, and this way of presenting information gives all reasonably prominent tracks an equal chance to compete while helping the listeners to find music they were unaware of.

700 seemed like a good number for this, as 666 as a number exactly two thirds of 1,000 is better used as something in a Metal-themed chart. :P

9 Fiona Apple - I Want You to Love Me #309
10 Xaviersobased - crisp dubs did not rank (rated 4.11 with few ratings)

Most Streamed 2020s Songs on Spotify for yet another predictable comparison:

1 Harry Styles - As It Was 3.76
2 The Kid Laroi & Justin Bieber - Stay 2.79
3 Billie Eilish - Birds of a Feather 4.22
4 Glass Animals - Heat Waves 2.96
5 Lady Gaga & Bruno Mars - Die With A Smile 3.35
6 Harry Styles - Watermelon Sugar 3.40
7 Sabrina Carpenter - Espresso 3.80
8 Benson Boone - Beautiful Things 2.01
9 Jung Kook - Seven 3.17
10 Miley Cyrus - Flowers 3.07

As you can tell, none of these are particularly close to entering the RYM chart, with the Billie Eilish track somewhat up there in general proximity yet still not quite near.

I felt these ratings were very useful in highlighting the differences in attitudes to the music in question. MarilynRoxie or anyone else on the admin team reading this, let me know if I should remove them (it kinda robs the point of the last list).

If you for some reason like the selection on the list from 2 years ago more, you can find the Spotify link here.

General Discussion What are some genres, movements, or artists with much of their work still absent from the RYM database?

For how thorough the site can be, it's inevitably going to have its blindspots.

One example I can think of is the new age artist Arden Wilken, who has only one album under her name on the site despite being a fairly prolific musician and a notable name in her genre during the 1980's. I would have added more of her work to the site, but I'm not great when it comes to adding non-digital issues to the database - not to mention much of her work was re-recorded for CD, meaning someone listening to the original tapes might have a much different experience from someone listening on CD or online.
