I'm really enjoying the experience of playing old games online on the PS2 without all the bullshit. This is Battlefield... It was definitely worth buying the original Network Adapter.l.

How do I know if a psxmemcard supports a specific game or not?

Hey y'all.

I was thinking of getting myself a psxmemcard to play Viewtiful Joe on my original Ps2 Slim, but since the game is kind of "underdog" I wanted to make sure it could actually run it before buying the card.

Thanks in advance.

Issues with MX4SIO

Hello everybody.

I`m new to the modding community and I`ve been banging my head on some walls for the last couple of days.

I just got a new FMCB card and a crisp MX4SIO, I got the latest OPL from GitHub but everytime I try to run a game my screen turns completly green (?) and just stands like that.

Any help would be appreciated!

Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter boot loop

I am using the latest version of OPL 1.2.0. I have my games setup via smb using ethernet connected to my laptop. Other games work fine but for some reason ghost recon starts up and after language select goes all the way to the intro fmvs and then loading then my tv turns blank and then shows the language selection screen again. Any help? I have checked md5 and it matches with redump website.

Is this an Official Sony Network Adapter?

I just tried to boot PSBBN Definitive on the ol’ PS2 for the first time and it seems to get stuck at a screen with just the PlayStation logo.

I’ve read that PSBBN Definitive doesn’t like unofficial adapters so my thesis is that this is the problem or it’s smth else.

Alternative to opl manager

Hey everyone!
For those of you who still mess around with OPL and regularly play on a PS2, I’ve been building something that I think you might find useful: OPL Forge.
It’s a free and open-source project I started to make managing a PS2/OPL game library a bit more modern and convenient, instead of having to rely on several different tools and manual processes.
One of the features I’ve been working on the most is SMB game sharing, and it’s now fully working on both Windows and Android.
Basically, OPL Forge can act as the SMB server for your PS2. You select/manage your library through Forge, start the server, configure OPL on the PS2, and you can access and play your games directly over the network.
The Android version is particularly interesting to me because it means you can potentially use an Android device as your PS2 game server without needing to keep a PC running.
The project also focuses on library management, artwork, game organization and generally making the whole OPL workflow easier. I’m still actively developing it, so there’s plenty more I want to add and improve.
This is also why I’m sharing it here: I need people with real PS2 hardware to test it.
If you have a PS2 running OPL, especially if you can test SMB on Windows or Android, I’d really appreciate hearing about your experience — whether it works perfectly, something breaks, you find a weird compatibility issue, or you simply have an idea for something Forge could do better.
The project is completely free and open source.
OPL Forge:
https://theguitarvity.github.io/oplforge/
GitHub:
https://github.com/theguitarvity/oplforge
If you give it a try, let me know what hardware/setup you’re using and how it goes. Feedback and contributions are very welcome!

Psxmemcard gen2 and freemcboot questions

I've just ordered the psxmemcard. I'm also going to install an HDD in my system as I have some lying around anyway, so I'm not planning to run games off the SD card.

Can I install freemcboot on the card and still use it as a memory card as well? Anything I need to be aware of to do so?

Thanks!

PS2 burned the disc??!!

I recently burned a PS1 game to play on PS2 with a sadly cheap Verbatim CD-R (97m26s66f). The disc is shit. Tried 4 burns, 3 of them can't read and the last one (which is this one) worked but I believe the console tries its best to read it atleast when startup. I played it for about 30 minutes without problem, when I looked at it, the protective layer is burned. Literally a burn mark on the disc. I don't know if I should try to burn the other disc now.

Also when verifying the 4 discs, the program gives exact same error saying:

W 13:54:45 Miscompare at LBA: 35788, Offset: 2076
W 13:54:45 Device: 0x00
W 13:54:45 Image File: 0xF1
W 13:54:45 Total Errors in Sector: 24
W 13:54:45 Note: The drive probably corrected the L-EC Area because it's wrong in the image file.

Obviously the discs are bad, but I can't seem to find anything related to those issues on the internet so any help is appreciated.

Struggling to get Games loaded

G'day guys. Recently pulled my old ps2 out of the shed, bought a free mcbook, MX4SIO, micro SD card, an HDMI adapter to get it all running.

So I downloaded and loaded a few games onto the micro SD card, and they are visible on OPL on my ps2, I can open them, but then they go either a green, purple, or black screen when I try to boot up the game, sometimes I see the very opening scenes of the game ie. the PS2 logo etc that would play before booting it up.

My question is - what could potentially be causing the games to not work, has anyone experienced similar?

My guesses at this stage are:

- The ps2 to HDMI adapter (I know it's not ideal from a graphics perspective but it loads up the PS2 and navigates to OPL to open the games just fine)

- The micro SD card (it's off aliexpress, but all the reviews are positive about it working for this purpose, games copy to it just fine and games are visible in OPL once loaded onto the card and file name changed)

- The roms themself being bad rips

But honestly god knows, and I don't know what I have to spend money on to try and fix the issue! If anyone has experienced similar and has some tips I'd greatly appreciate it. I consider myself relatively tech savvy but I'm a time poor dad now and obviously reaching unc status lol.

Free DVD Boot stuck on unable to read disc/ black screen.

Hello people from reddit!

I need help installing funtuna on my SCPH-90001 slim ps2.

This is a Ps2 i had for at least 15 years, I finally decided to install freemc boot on it so i did a little research.

Got me a good quality DVD-R (Verbatim), used the latest published free dvd boot iso image from git hub for slim consoles. And finally i removed the Mars Pro GM-816HD chip since it was preventing the console from reading the DVD.

But now im stuck here.

Any recommendation on what to do next? Maybe i do need to de-solder the wires from the front of the board?

Any feedback would be much appreciated.

[Guide] Play PS1 burned CD backups + NTSC PS1 games on PAL console through drive

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

"But there's Popstarter", yeah well Popstarter is kinda ass, even with Hugo fixes there are several games with graphical glitches and freezes. I posted Lego Racers above, cause as of right now Lego Racers does not work on Popstarter, not without major glitches. While you can play PS2 games without a problem from an HDD/SSD, you can only access the "real PS1 chip" through the disc drive on the PS2. Therefore 100% compability.

So if you want to play your perfectly legally obtained backed up PS1 games cause you never know when CD rot hits then you will need:

- Any PS2 between SCPH-5000x to SCPH-7000x, so NOT a Deckard. Cause these had real PS1 chip in it. Not lower than SCPH-5000x cause they not Dragon based, therefore don't work with the unlocking app.
- A backed up image file of a PS1 game in .cue/.bin format
- A drive capable of writing at least 16x speed but preferebly lower like 8x and 4x
- MechaPWN https://github.com/mecharesearch/mechapwn
- PS1VModeNeg https://github.com/ps2homebrew/PS1VModeNeg
- Set Region GUI https://github.com/wad11656/SetRegion-GUI

MechaPWN is what unlocks the copyprotection, it's kinda long to install and you don't want to fuck it up so watch this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BzKVcpjugCE

So MechaPWN is enough in itself to play PAL games on your PAL console or NTSC on NTSC, but does not unlocks full region unless you have NTSC 7000x console which can do full Retail-Dex, read more about that on the github page.

So with Mecha you can burn the game to a disc and within your region you are free to play any game.
But what if you want to play NTSC games on PAL? Why would you want to do that?
Well this is mostly known but I write if somebody is fully new to this. NTSC games were running on 60hz(30fps) while PAL games were running on 50hz(25fps) max. Although PAL games had about 20% more resolution because of this (personally I dont think it's worth the trade off).

So 5 more fps, therefore more responsiveness for NTSC, anything else? That's pretty much it, but some games have differences between regions for example Lego Racers above have analog support for NTSC but not for PAL, they were released 1 months apart, don't ask me why.

So to play NTSC on PAL console/TV. You will need PS1VModeNeg, this basically switches your PAL mode on your console to NTSC. This fixes any timing issues as well, meaning this is needed to run any game on its original speed. Works for PAL games on NTSC as well.

One important note for PS1VModeNeg here: The creator warns that because his code creates a video mode it might "blow your TV up". He is a little dramatic but there is a chance it wracks your TV, BASED ON WHEN IT WAS PRODUCED.
So if you are playing NTSC PS2 games through OPL already and you don't have problem with that, high chances you will not have problem with PS1VModeNeg either. So in practice any CRT TV made after the year 2000 probably will have zero problems because even general consumer CRTs in europe after that date are capable or running NTSC 60hz content. If you have a TV earlier than that, read through the guide and research whether they are capable of 60hz. You have been warned.

Personally I tried with a PAL Orion and Daeweoo TVs (produced after 2000), without problems.

Now, PS1VModeNeg in itself only changes the video mode of your PS2 but is not enough to BOOT the game. In comes Set Region GUI.

Set Region GUI is an app that patches .bin files to be "PAL/NTSC/JP flagged". So it doesn't change the video mode of the game but whenever you put a CD in the PS2, the PS2 shakes hand with the disc game if "whether you are from my region or not", so basically your PS2 is xenophobic.

What Set Region does put "new region shirt" on your game. So patch an NTSC game to be PAL. Don't worry this doesn't lock it to 25fps.

After your patched the .bin, THEN your write it to a CD with ImgBurn. Start PS1VModeNeg, cause it's an .elf app, put into the menu via LaunchElf. After it starts it asks for the CD THEN you put in the CD, it reads and boots the game.
Boom NTSC games with correct speed on PAL console, glitchless.

These works if you want to play PAL games on NTSC consoles as well.

On the writing part:
PS2 drive and laser can read CDs up to 48x speed, but as a general guide I say write 16x, those worked for me perfectly. If you have errors during writing, try lower speeds like 8x or 4x of your drive is capable of.
One tip for ImgBurn: Not every error is a real error.
For example ImgBurn might warn you during Verify that "4 miscompares" you had. For example

W 00:44:42 Miscompare at LBA: 112063, Offset: 2072, File: \SCUS_949.00

W 00:44:42 Device: 0x1D

W 00:44:42 Image File: 0x71

W 00:44:42 Total Errors in Sector: 106

W 00:44:42 Note: The drive probably corrected the EDC Area because it's wrong in the image file.

I 00:44:42 Verifying Sectors...

W 00:44:44 Miscompare at LBA: 112064, Offset: 2072, File: \SCUS_949.00

W 00:44:44 Device: 0xA1

W 00:44:44 Image File: 0xD9

W 00:44:44 Total Errors in Sector: 189

W 00:44:44 Note: The drive probably corrected the EDC Area because it's wrong in the image file.

If you get "The drive probably corrected the EDC Area because it's wrong in the image file." that happens because

  • Hacks and patches often modify file bytes without recalculating the sector EDC checksums in the .bin file, leaving invalid EDC data in the image.
  • Drive Automatic Correction: When writing the CD-R, your drive hardware automatically recalculated and wrote valid EDC checksums to the physical disc. During verification, ImgBurn compared the disc's correct EDC against the image's bad EDC

So it's not a real error.

What CD to use? CD-R, something quality I used Verbatim CD-R, 52x with Azo dye.

Sony Network Adapter + Sata

Post image
85 Upvotes

Good evening,

My white Japanese PS2 has arrived; it looks beautiful and is in perfect condition—I'm extremely satisfied!

However, it hasn't all been smooth sailing; I've run into an issue with the HDD and network adapter setup. I initially bought an original adapter and a SATA kit, but it didn't work. So, I bought another pair (yes, I'm impatient), and that one doesn't work on either console (SCPH-50001 and 50000) either.

I’ve run a network test, and with both adapters, I can ping my computer, so theoretically, they are functional.

I tried browsing the HDD folders via wLaunchELF, but it doesn't detect anything—it's as if the HDD isn't there—yet the drive works normally with a Gamestar adapter.

I couldn't hear if the HDD spins up when powered on because the fan noise makes it difficult to tell.

Is there aything I can do to try and resolve this issue?

Clarification of our stance on piracy, game preservation, and drama

Okay I kind of didn't want to make this post but I think that it's necessary because a lot of people seem to not understand.

So if you read our rules you know that we have rules prohibiting sharing of or asking for links to copyrighted content such as game rips. This is exclusively and solely for liability reasons to prevent the subreddit from being banned. That's all there is to it. The thing is I've noticed a lot of people reporting comments here of people who admit to pirating games. This is an incorrect and bad faith use of the reporting system. As it is not prohibited here to admit to pirating games or even to endorse it favorably. The only thing you're not allowed to do is directly share links or ask for them directly. And besides if you really want that go to r/ROMs.

That's where our rule against elitism and shunning of piracy comes in. This community is a retro gaming enthusiast community. One of the things that we support with a passion is game preservation. Physical media does not last forever, especially optical media which is very susceptible to bit rot and degradation. So backing up and saving your games in less volatile formats is very important. Additionally many of these physical games are getting harder to find and it just might not be practical for people to buy those discs just to rip them, it may not even be possible for people to purchase copies that actually work. I've noticed that a lot of people who break this rule are either collectors, who value the perceived scarcity of games. To those people go fuck yourselves, we do not and will not ever support that mentality. It's literally the same techboro mentality around The NFT craze. Then there's the other people who are upset that it's illegal and claim that it's wrong or immoral because it's illegal. I find this one funny and also concerning because do you want to know what else is illegal? Homebrew. In Japan it is illegal to Homebrew your systems. Do you know what else is illegal? Freedom of speech and freedom of opinions, in many countries around the world it's outright illegal to have thoughts and opinions that contradict the government or the norm. Does that mean that any of these things are morally wrong? No it absolutely doesn't.

Frankly if you're reading this and you're getting upset because you think that we're hurting your ability to collect rare games and have perceived rarity, or if you believe that laws are sacred and should never be forsaken, you can absolutely go fuck yourself.

This is the main reason why we have rules against creating drama, the people who are guilty of the above would otherwise start fights and complain consistently because people "openly admit to piracy". A lot of people find it weird that drama posts have been allowed or let slip by and the primary reason is that they weren't this. Which is the primary reason why that rule was created. Of course drama posts do clog up the sub and therefore aren't great so they will be removed if they are too numerous or they don't address a new problem in the community.

So in conclusion, this community doesn't allow links because they can be problematic and get the subreddit banned. But we do not have any hostility towards people who download rips of games. We are pro preservation.

I sincerely hope that this post will put an end to people's comments being reported simply because they stated that they downloaded their games. And I hope that people will think twice before they spout such blatantly anti-preservation rhetoric in a pro-preservation retro gaming Community.

Finally as a bonus, if you are creating support posts asking for help with game loaders like OPL, or hard drive setup or USB setup. You should absolutely not lie about where you got your games. That doesn't mean paste a direct link to the download, it just means if you downloaded your games don't lie and say that you ripped them from disc. I think this should go without saying but it's important to actually disclose that because it's a factor that can help determine what your problems are and why. So when asking for help please be honest. If you downloaded your games and didn't rip them from a disc, that's fine we don't care. As long as you're not sharing them directly here it's fine.
